d Fast, Member of Parliament for Abbotsford, today commented on the rail blockade set up by protesters at Vye Road between Riverside Road and Sumas Way. The protestors are opposed to the Coastal Gaslink pipeline project proposed for northern and the west coast of B.C., which crosses Wet’suwet’en territory. A B.C. judge issued an interlocutory injunction saying pipeline opponents could not block Coastal GasLink from accessing the work site.
“I believe that one of the most important pillars of a free and democratic society is a commitment to respecting the rule of law,” said Fast. “Although all Canadians have the right to protest peacefully to publicly express their views on important public issues, deliberately defying the law is something I cannot and will not defend.” The fact remains that extensive consultations were conducted and the majority of the Wet’suwet’en people believe the project will benefit their communi-
ties. All 20 elected First Nations governments along the pipeline’s path have signed benefit agreements with the company. Even hereditary chief Theresa Tait-Day of Wet’suwet’en Nation has said that 85% of her people want
the project. A small number of hereditary Wet’suwet’en chiefs have opposed the project and, together with other anti-energy activists, have illegally blockaded rail lines and disrupted transit services and businesses across Canada. “This project has undergone a fair and transparent process and has received all required regulatory and environmental approvals to ensure that it is built and operated sustainably,” explained Fast. “Although I appreciate that some people may still disagree with the decision, I encourage the opponents of this project to protest in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with the law.
