Seniors around British Columbia to benefit from age-friendly supports

ritish Columbia communities are encouraged to support seniors so they can live active, socially engaged and independent lives, as $500,000 in a new round of age-friendly grants are open for application. “Seniors who are connected to their communities and stay active live longer and healthier lives,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Age-friendly grants are instrumental in supporting seniors and I hope communities around British Columbia apply so there can be local supports in place so seniors can live as independently as possible.” The age-friendly communities grant program is a partnership between the Province and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. “Seniors are at the heart of our Province – they built British Columbia into the great place that it is today,” said Anne Kang, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors. “There is a lot of

Thanks to funding through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, delivered through the Farm Adaptation Innovator Program (FAIP), 10 new applied research projects will explore solutions to climate change-related challenges facing agricultural commodities across B.C. Two projects, one led by the BC Forage Council and one led by the Peace River Forage Association of British Columbia, will investigate how innovations in forage management practices and technologies can improve soil health and boost yields while enhancing resilience to drought conditions and extreme rainfall. The projects, taking place in partnership with producers in the Cariboo and Peace regions, will also evaluate how these practices impact the capacity of the soil to store carbon and contribute to the removal of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere. The University of British Columbia (UBC) is leading a project – in collaboration with vegetable producers in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver PAGE 14
rainfall and drought conditions expected with a changing climate. Changing climate conditions are also resulting in shifting pest populations, and E.S. Cropconsult is leading two projects focusing on pest management. One project will test new pest management solutions with blueberry growers in the Lower Mainland, and one will increase access to pest management resources for small-scale berry and vegetable producers in the Lower Mainland and SquamishLillooet regions. All 10 projects will include field trials, demonstrations and the development of producer-focused informational resources that will allow research results to be shared broadly. As stated by Henry Yu, “Between 1907 and 1947, there was this fantasy of Canada being only for whites.” Further, according to Freda Hawkins, the main driving force behind the White Canada Policy was the “collective national desire to remain British in political principles and institutions, and to remain white like their forebears from Europe.” This official policy towards Asian immigration was reflected in popular culture. The contemporary popular beer-parlour song among British Columbia’s local white population was entitled White Canada, the chorus of which was: Then let us stand united all, And show our father’s might, That won the home we call our own, For white man’s land we fight. Accordingly, the preferred immigrants to Canada were those from the British Isles, United States and northern Europe whilst non-preferred immigrants were those from eastern and southern Europe who were generally granted entry during periods of economic growth but closely regulated during bad times. Asians and Blacks “should not come at all.” Between 1867 and 1896, ninety percent of Canadian immigrants originated from Britain. The entry of Asians into Canada was severely curtailed or restricted through various disguised racist regulations and administrative practices. To keep Canada “white”, the exclusionists in British Columbia, which included civil servants, trade unionists, politicians and journalists, lobbied for a White Canada Policy. With regard to the Indians, their exclusion
was based on the following grounds: Indian labour was an economic threat to white labour; Indians were deemed unsuited to the Pacific Northwest’s climate and thus could not perform manual labour productively; Indians were regarded as “racially inferior” and thus unable to integrate into white culture; Indians were reportedly diseased and thereby endangered public health; and the Indians were purportedly immoral due to their “sexual deviance” and criminality. It should be noted that Section 38 (c) of The Immigration Act of 1910 prohibited the entry of “immigrants belonging to any race deemed unsuited to the climate or requirements of Canada.” The argument that the Indians were physically unsuited to the Pacific Northwest’s climate was baseless. As Jonathan H.X. Lee writes, the “Punjabi immigrants (Pacific Coast) had a reputation of being good workers.” Similarly, Joan M. Jensen states that the Sikhs “quickly learned their jobs”, were “quite willing to work long, hard hours” in the lumber mills, and were also more reliable than Euro-American men who “were too transient.”

Province funds local government poverty reduction strategies
As part of TogetherBC, British Columbia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Province is providing $5 million to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for the Poverty Reduction Planning & Action program. Interested communities can apply for funding to support local initiatives and plans that will help B.C. reduce the overall poverty rate by 25% and the child poverty rate by 50% by 2024. “Local governments see the impacts of poverty in their communities from the front lines,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “These grants are an opportunity for our government to work with municipalities and community organizations in identifying their most pressing local issues and developing local solutions in the fight against poverty.”
Projects must involve key community partners, such as communitybased poverty reduction organizations, people with lived experience of poverty, businesses, local First Nations or Indigenous organizations. “Local governments have long advocated for a comprehensive approach to address the reality of poverty in B.C. communities,” said Coun. Murry Krause, UBCM past president. “This new funding program helps to advance TogetherBC’s priorities and will strengthen local co-ordination and implementation of poverty reduction plans.”

Communities show leadership for a cleaner B.C. Communities throughout British Columbia are showing leadership through actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to the effects of a changing climate, according to the latest report on local government corporate and community-wide actions.

Passive House certification is equivalent to the highest step in the BC Energy Step Code.
