Overseas Developers Coming to Canada Where have all the developers gone?
A
wave of overseas talent has found its way to Canadian shores following the strict travel and immigration bans from U.S. President Trump, and B.C. employers are welcoming the increased access to a skilled workforce with open arms. Based on projections in the tech industry, the Canadian government is aiming to fill over 200,000 IT positions by 2021; more than 20,000 of those new jobs will be filled in B.C. alone. By 2019, over 15,000 of those positions will be in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, almost 2,000 in Victoria, and over 3,500 throughout the rest of B.C. Because of a shortage of skilled and qualified talent in Canada, many employers are looking outside our borders to hire people they so desperately need to maintain an edge in this competitive and growing technology industry. The report released in April 2017 that outlines the nearly 216,000 IT and tech jobs to be filled states, “Much of the rising demand for tech professionals is attributed to transformative and rapid advancements of technology,” such as AR/VR, AI, and blockchain. Over 150 Canadian tech leaders recently signed an open letter that outlines their priority on hiring diverse and skilled workers in their workplaces. An excerpt reads: “Canadian tech companies understand the power of inclusion and diversity of thought, and that talent and skill know no borders. In choosing to hire, train and mentor the best people in the world, we can build global companies that grow our economy. By embracing diversity, we can drive innovation to benefit the world.” In our own company, we’ve seen the impact of this lack of skilled talent first hand. Our team specializes in managing software systems for small to medium sized businesses, many in the Lower Mainland, and we have dis-

covered there is a significant shortage of developers who have experience with enterprise software. “Some of our industry’s top players have thousands of developers with over a decade of Salesforce experience, but they are under pressure to migrate the client support to North America,” says Matthew Unger, CEO of Ascension Innovation Management. “One of our competitors, with eight of North America’s top banks as clients, saw every one of their 150 U.S. working visa applications denied after the recent change in U.S. leadership. We are now working together to bring those already established incomes from India to Canada instead of the United States.” Two of Vancouver’s powerhouse businessmen, Shafin Diamond Tejani and Ray Walia, are also working diligently to bring more Indian developers to Canada. "This provides a great opportunity for the best talent from India to come, live and work in Canada," Shafin told the Economic Times. While political tensions and hiring frictions increase south of the border, many Canadian companies, including technology startups like Ascension, have an exciting opportunity to win over this talent and increase their competitive advantage over much larger, more established U.S. competitors. How to recognize and treat heat illnesses (NC) Canadian summers are hotter than ever before, with recent research showing a significant increase in the number of extreme heat events across the country. While we love spending time outdoors in the summer, a fun day under the sun can quickly turn dangerous if you don’t take a few precautions. Here are some tips that will help you learn the signs of heat illnesses and what to do about them, from Health Canada, which works with health partners across the country to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the risks of extreme heat. Know the symptoms. Heat illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat fainting, heat edema (swelling of hands, feet and ankles), heat rash and muscle cramps. Symptoms of heat illness are dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, extreme thirst, and decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine. Know what to do. If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place, such as a shaded area, and drink liquids — water is best. Immediate action is needed to minimize the possibility of developing heat stroke. Don’t be afraid to get help. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you are caring for someone who has a high body temperature and is either unconscious or confused or
who has stopped sweating. While waiting for help, cool the person right away by moving them to a cool place, applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing, and fanning them as much as possible. Understand your risk. While extreme heat can affect everyone, the risks are greatest for older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses or on certain medications, people who work in the heat, people who exercise in the heat, and homeless people and low-income earners who may have less access to cool places. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are at increased risk, and check in on neighbours and others who may be vulnerable Practice prevention. Some easy ways to stay cool are to drink plenty of liquids — especially water — before you feel thirsty, plan outdoor activities during cooler hours, and wear loosefitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric. Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place, like a tree-shaded area, community centre, shopping mall, or public library. www.newscanada.com

John Horgan and your New Democrat government Hard at work building a better B.C. VICTORIA – Premier John Horgan and the New Democrat government have been working hard over these first few weeks, making a better B.C., following 16 years of a B.C. Liberal government that only cared about their wealthy friends and supporters. Since July 18, when Premier Horgan and his cabinet were sworn in, the new B.C. government has been working to make life more affordable for British Columbians, create good jobs and opportunities across our great province, and restore and strengthen important services. Here are just a few things Premier Horgan and the New Democrat government have already done within a few short weeks: Supports for people affected by the wildfires Immediately following the swearingin of the new government, Premier John Horgan and the new B.C. government made addressing the wildfires and supporting people and businesses affected by them the most urgent priority. Within 24 hours, a task force that includes members of cabinet was established that immediately went to the front lines to determine the scope of the problem, and determine what was needed. The new government also pledged ongoing financial support for people forced to evacuate their communities until they are allowed to return home. Standing up for BC’s interests in the face of Kinder Morgan The New Democrat government took action on our commitment to protect British Columbia’s interests in the face of the proposed expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline and increased tanker traffic. New Democrats said they would use every tool in the toolbox to protect our economy, environment and thousands of existing jobs, and that work has begun. The first steps include securing Thomas Berger as external legal counsel, seeking options for the B.C. government to participate in legal challenges, and ensuring the province engages in meaningful consultation with Indigenous people concerning the project.

Restoring the Human Rights Commission Under the B.C. Liberal government, B.C. was the only province without a Human Right Commission, and British Columbians deserve better. That’s why John Horgan and the New Democrat government announced they will reestablish a human rights commission to fight inequality and discrimination in all its forms. Eliminated tuition fees on Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs Premier John Horgan wants to make it easier for all British Columbians to get ahead. Removing financial roadblocks like these is an important step towards investing in an economy that works for everyone. Sending the Site C project for an independent review The B.C. Liberal government refused to allow our independent energy watchdog to examine the Site C project. Instead, the B.C. Liberals just wanted to “get it past the point of no return” unscrutinised, and regardless of whether there would be a massive financial impact on people across the province. As promised, the New Democrat government is finally sending the project to review so that the best-informed decisions can be made in the interests of B.C. families. Increased income assistance and disability payments by $100 The previous B.C. Liberal government were only looking out for their wealthy

friends, while everyone else was left to fend for themselves and the most vulnerable suffered.
Establishing a stand-alone Ministry for Mental Health and Addictions during overdose crisis
The New Democrat government is there for people, and this immediate increase was an important part of our government’s commitment to create a comprehensive poverty reduction plan.
The first priority of this new ministry is to save lives immediately in the face of the overdose crisis, and this involves meeting with people on the front lines of the crisis.
A review of the Hullcar Aquifer to ensure drinking water is safe As concerns mounted about the safety of drinking water, people in the Hullcar Valley were hitting brick walls with the previous B.C. Liberal government who seemed mostly unconcerned. The new government has announced a new review to ensure agricultural practices are consistent with ensuring safe drinking water. Purchasing the Waneta Dam through BC Hydro Owning the Waneta Dam and generating station is expected to help keep rates affordable for British Columbians, and will support local jobs for many years.

Taking steps toward affordable and quality childcare Under the B.C. Liberal government’s watch, childcare became less and less accessible, and more and more expensive – forcing some parents to make tough decisions about their careers. As promised, Premier John Horgan and the New Democrat government want to make child care affordable, and a first step toward that was to establish a Minister of State for Childcare. There is much more to come, as Premier John Horgan and the New Democrat government get to work preparing for the fall session of the legislature which will be about making life better for British Columbians - something the B.C. Liberal government took for granted and called “busy work.”

Restoring free tuition fees. Why education is the great equalizer. By John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia, VICTORIA - Education is the great equalizer. It opens the door to a goodpaying job, and a secure future. We need to give help, hope and opportunity to people who want to get a basic education to learn the skills they need to join the workforce and build a better life for themselves and their families. That journey starts with opening the doors to adult basic education and English language learning. These programs should be within reach for everyone, from new Canadians and recent immigrants, to students preparing for university and adult learners upgrading their skills for work. The previous government put up barriers to a basic education when they introduced tuition fees for Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning in 2015. Fees were set by each institution, but could cost up to $1,600 per semester of full-time stud-
ies, which is the same as the average cost for an arts and science degree program. Many people could not afford to pay these new tuition fees. As a result, enrolment in Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs dropped 35% from more than 10,000 students a year to just under 6,700 students a year. This is why our government is removing the roadblocks to education by eliminating tuition for adult basic education and English language learning starting September 1, 2017. This change will open the doors to tens of thousands of British Columbians to upgrade their education and skills each year. We will continue to make changes that give families relief from high costs and fees, and invest in better services that give people help and hope for a better life.

On the one hand, moving can be an exciting adventure. Although on the other hand, it could be a stressful time if things go wrong. This report explains the nine most common mistakes people make when relocating.
3. Not planning for temporary housing between destinations
Common Relocation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
1. Lack of information Contact the chamber of commerce, tourism department, municipality or library in your new community. Be sure to require on info, compare salaries, cost of living, taxes and housing prices. 2. Home not priced and ready for showing Before you sell your home be sure to complete any repairs needed. Often, it is the little things like chipped paint, worn caulking and sticky doors that potential buyers notice. Have your home cleaned including carpets. Have a Comparable Market Analysis (CMA) completed by one or two local Real Estate Professionals to ensure your price is competitive in the local market.
You may need to set up temporary housing arrangements until the closing you have possession of your new home. This could take from a few days to a few months. If you need interim housing for a few days, perhaps staying in a hotel is the simplest solution. For housing longer than a month, you may want to consider an apartment with a short-term lease. 4. Not being pre-approved Sellers are usually eager to negotiate with someone who has immediate buying power. 5. Not completing a professional home inspection This applies for both the home you are selling and the one you are buying although who pays for the inspection, whether the buyer or seller is negotiable in each separate contract.

Learning perspective before back-to-school (NC) As students enjoy the last few days of summer and prepare to return to school excited to learn the skills needed for their future careers, it’s important to remember that not every child is as fortunate. Girls all over the world are often still denied access to school. In many sub-Saharan African nations, girls are forced to leave school early due to immense poverty and discrimination. Denied the chance to finish secondary school and unable to continue their education at the college or university level, their chances of a good career are significantly affected. When a young woman can continue learning past secondary school, she is better equipped with the skills to find safe and sustainable employment, allowing her to choose her own path in life without needing to marry young. Yet there are 31 million girls who are of primary school age but not in school. In Sierra Leone, only 53.8 per cent of females are literate, compared to 71.6 per cent of males.
Countries like Rwanda are encouraging all young people to consider a STEM degree or TVET (technical vocational education and training) to improve infrastructural development. Although enrollment for primary school education has gone up in the past decade, the number of women enrolled in post-secondary is still low. This is why Beautiful World Canada focuses on providing college and university scholarships to women in Uganda, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. These efforts help women graduate with a better chance of finding employment and concentrate on bettering themselves and their community. In fact, when females begin earning an income, they will reinvest 90 per cent of it into their family. For every extra year a girl stays in secondary school, her future income increases by 15 to 25 per cent. . You can help make a difference and find more information at www.beautifulworldcanada.org.

5 tips to prepare for back to school, post-secondary-style (NC) Whether it is you or your kids just starting school or returning to college or university, here are five helpful tips that mentally and physically prepare post-secondary students for the year ahead. 1. Practice a sleep routine. Give yourself enough time to relax before going to bed, turning off all those bright distractions to get enough undisturbed sleep. Making this a routine before and during the school year can have a positive impact on your health and overall productivity. Rather than starting the night before, begin this routine some weeks before the first day to help you avoid frustration. 2. Prepare meals ahead of time. Making nutritious meals a day or two before school can free up a lot of time elsewhere in your schedule. 3. Pack your backpack the day before. Organizing your backpack, the day before with what you’ll need for school the next day is important. It is
PAGE 23
much better to realize that you cannot find something a day or two early than scrambling that morning when you’re already running late. 4. Practice going to school. Map out a route you’d like to take and — whether you’re walking, driving or taking public transit — try that route out during the same time of day when you would leave to go to school. 5. Talk with someone with experience. Speak with an alumnus or current student who enjoyed the program or institution you’re enrolled in. Having a positive outlook on your school career can have spillover benefits for your education.

You’ve been stopped by the police. The breathalyzer has registered a “fail". Part: 2
O
ne of the officer’s options is to proceed under the Motor Vehicle Act (“MVA).
The main MVA tool is the Immediate Roadside Prohibition: the IRP. It’s true to its moniker: you are prohibited from driving, immediately-- where you’re talking to the police officer. Find your own way home. The length of the prohibition, depending on your blood alcohol level is and whether you have been given one before. It ranges from 24 hours to 90 days. The Administrative Driving Prohibition is another tool. They not immediate--it starts on the 21st day from the date on the notice. ADP’s are used when the criminal charges are also in play.
Jon Singh contract. And ICBC can refuse to pay for any damages you caused while driving under the influence, or bill you for the cost of repairing the damage to another vehicle.
There are further consequences. Your vehicle may, or will, be impounded for some time. There is an impoundment fee for the release of the vehicle, graduating in price depending on the type of prohibition. The impoundment can be appealed, but success depends on convincing grounds.
A driving prohibition will remain on your driving record. Permanently.
There are also remedial programs for those with an IRP. Some are mandatory. It potentially includes the completion of a safe driving course. Some will be required to install an ignition interlock into their vehicles. It is essentially an in-car breathalyzer; starting the car depends on a pass reading. You will shoulder the costs for both. The fun doesn’t end there. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia will levy additional fees if you have two or more MVA prohibitions in a three-year period. You will pay this whether or not you own or insure a vehicle. This is the Driver’s Risk Premium payment.
Challenging a driving prohibition is where the next challenge lies. The MVA limits challenges to a few, narrow grounds. A set of defenses are of a technical nature, such as the police officer not following the correct procedures. Other defenses are factual: convincing the Superintendent that you weren’t the driver, for example. Or that the breathalyzer test is inaccurate. But it is a high hurdle. If the police officer has met all the procedural and technical steps, the burden is on you to prove that you were not driving under the influence. Add it up and a conviction under the MVA is taxing, daunting and costly. But there are also the potential charges under the Criminal Code. But that awaits Part 3 of this series.
There is also the Driver Penalty Point Premium. Currently it is $905.00 for every 10-point conviction under the MVA. A conviction for a “fail” reading or refusal to blow carries a 10-point penalty,
Patrika Media is pleased to present Jon Singh as a legal affairs contributor. He practices as a barrister and solicitor in Surrey and is a graduate of UBC Law School.
You guessed it—there is more. Driving under the influence could be a technical breach of your car insurance
*This is the second in a series of four articles on the laws on driving under the influence in British Columbia.*

There were no ego problems with Salman, Aamir : Ajay Gone are the days when Bollywood stars enjoyed a loyal audience, believes Ajay Devgn. The actor says the present generation of cinegoers are not committed to any one hero or heroine."The newer generation of audiences are not loyal to anybody. We have been lucky that a segment of the public has been loyal to us for the past 25 years. So we have that plus point. But otherwise, they will only go and watch the film that they feel they'll understand," Devgn says. The actor, who will next be seen in Rohit Shettydirected Golmaal Again, says he still preferred the mystery that was once associated with a star."I feel
that the aura of the star is dying. I liked the mystery that came with being a star, I still do. But today, there is so much exposure. Say, if one is not active on the social media, they may start feeling insecure seeing others doing it. They may feel the pressure."Devgn says when he was starting off as an actor, there were no ego clashes among the contemporaries but things have changed today. He adds, "I have worked with Salman, Aamir and other heroes. All of us used to work together and there were no ego problems. Nobody was insecure about what the other person was doing. Earlier, we used to have Golmaal-like fun atmosphere on the set of every film.
'Chanda Mama Door Ke' quite challenging to make: Sushant
Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who is busy with the preparation for "Chanda Mama Door Ke", says it is India's first space film and despite the budget limitations, the team is bravely facing the challenge of making a worthwhile film. "It is quite a challenging film because it will be India's first space film, and knowing that we all loved seeing 'Gravity' and 'Interstellar' and we don't have so many dollars to make the film. So, it is extremely challenging for us to make this film and give you the same experience without having that much of funding. We are doing our best," Sushant said here on Wednesday."I always wanted to go to NASA, I stayed there and did everything an astronaut is supposed to do. I am going to make sure to do my best so that I don't disappoint you," added the actor who has been announced the brand ambassador of Ziox Smartphone.

We Don't Have to Prove Anything to Anybody : Malaika
The relationship between ex-couple Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan is still being speculated by many people. Are they going to consider a reconciliation? How
come they are spotted more together now, after the divorce? Why did they split up to begin with? So many questions, but until now, there was no clarification from either of them.Malaika, in a recent interview, put rest to all the rumours, openly clarifying certain questions regarding the duo’s relationship. Speaking of how she’s sealing with the separation she said, “Life has a way of making things fall into place, teaching you and making you stronger. One day you are sitting in your bed and thinking, sh man! What am I going to do? Everything is just falling apart! You feel like there is no hope and you've reached the end of the road. But then life challenges you. It pushes and tests you, but
Playing Saina Nehwal not easy for Shraddha : Amole Gupte
Superstar Aamir Khan says through his upcoming film 'Secret Superstar' he intends to highlight the message of equality between boys and girls in the society, something which he did in his last blockbuster film 'Dangal' as well. "Secret Superstar" revolves around a young girl (Zaira Wasim) and her dream to become a singer. Talking about the similarity between the two films, producer Aamir said in a statement here, "This film and 'Dangal' both are based on the same topic - which is changing the attitude towards girls. Treating girls equally as we treat our boys. This is again based on empowerment of the girl child." Produced by Aamir, Kiran Rao under their banner Aamir Khan Productions, Zee Studios and Akash Chawla, "Secret Superstar" is written and directed by Advait Chandan. The film is slated to release this Diwali.

also prepares you for whatever lies ahead. I definitely feel stronger.”Arora goes on to speak of how she depends on her friends, who she considers her sounding board. She spoke of how fitness and the beautiful bond she shares with her son Arhaan, has played a big role in helping her heal. When quizzed about still holding on the Khan surname, Malaika said, “Honestly, it hasn't been a conscious decision. What has to happen will happen organically. Let's see where life takes me.” The actress turned entrepreneur, also put rest to all the speculation around a reconciliation saying that Arbaaz will always remain family. She said,
Amole Gupte has his hands full with his upcoming projects. The filmmaker is shuttling between promotional work of his upcoming children's spy-thriller, Sniff, and shooting for the biopic on badminton champion Saina Nehwal. Talking about the training being given to his leading lady, Shraddha Kapoor, Gupte says, "She is currently going through an intensive regimen with Jitesh Padukone (former badminton player) and is practically transforming herself into Nehwal. She is committed. Playing Nehwal will not be easy, so I want Shraddha to be ready before we start rolling." After having spent two years with Nehwal, Gupte says he's now certain of the aspects of her life that he wishes to highlight on the big screen. "The film will trace her journey to becoming the
number one player in the world. I spent a lot of time with Nehwal before deciding to make the film. I don't want to waste this opportunity by making it look so unbelievable that it almost seems fictional." Apart from interacting with the player, Gupte also spent time with those close to her. "Since my film also portrays the life of her family before her birth, I had to meet her parents [Harvir Singh and Usha Rani]. I also spent time with her coach Pullela Gopichand, and her friends." The filmmaker suggests that he may title his biopic, Maar Dungi, based on the phrase Nehwal uses before a match. "Before she goes for the match, she says, 'Mujhe jaana hai aur maarna hai,' or, 'Usko maar dungi,'" he laughs.

Sun & Heat Stress Safety for B.C.’s Agriculture Workers There are over 24,000 people employed in British Columbia’s agriculture industry and sun and heat exposure are workplace hazards for many of them. Agriculture workers have a 2.5-3.5 times greater risk of developing skin cancer than indoor workers, according to a Sun Safety At Work Canada 2016 report. Employers are responsible for addressing this risk. AgSafe, BC’s agriculture health and safety association suggests the best way to reduce the risk of sun and heat exposure in the workplace is to implement a sun and heat safety action plan for outside workers. “There are resources available for those who employ outdoor workers to help them develop and implement a sun and heat safety plan,” says Wendy Bennett, Executive Director of AgSafe. “The key is controlling the worker’s exposure to sun and the possibility of heat stress.” Checking Environment Canada’s UV index regularly to monitor worker risk and providing a shade structure, where practical or enabling shade breaks on the worksite will help reduce the effects of sun exposure.

Donating ukulele kits to FVRL to further expand their Uke ‘n Play collection is great way for us to give back to the community and help make music accessible to everyone.” FVRL will celebrate the donation and collection expansion with a party at the White Rock Library (15342 Buena Vista Avenue) on Friday, August 18,
Ç
from 2-3 pm. The event, open to everyone, will include light refreshments, live musical performances by the White Rock Ukulele Circle, and the opportunity to try out a ukulele. “FVRL is proud to partner Tapestry Music, a local business that shares similar values to the library. Their donation means that we can get more ukuleles into the hands of our customers faster,” says Heather Scoular, Director of Customer Experience. The ukulele has exploded in popularity; it is small, portable, easy to learn, and fun to play. FVRL cardholders can borrow the ukuleles, free of charge, for a two-week period. Each comes in a kit that includes a ukulele, a soft ukulele case, a digital tuner and a beginner ukulele book. Learn more about the Uke ‘n Play program by visiting www.fvrl.ca/ukulele, or FVRL’s YouTube channel at www. youtube.com/FraserValleyLibrary.

Ag Refresh Comments by Councillor Sandy Blue Abbotsford Executive Council Meeting - July 31, 2017
T
he work of AgRefresh is something we will look back on as a defining moment in our history. This comprehensive body of work has the potential to significantly increase viability and yield on farms across Abbotsford – to feed our growing population and fuel our economy. AgRefresh will address a number of issues people are concerned about including truck parking and other contentious non-farm uses on agricultural land. As AgRefresh moves on to the next phase, I would encourage staff to explore not only the land use aspects of agriculture but also potential solutions that will result in transforming fallow or underutilized land into active production.
Imagine if an outcome of AgRefresh is a rethinking of the qualifying criteria for an Ag Enhancement Grant. What if this fund was available to address the specific issues identified as obstacles - and help connect landowners with would-be farmers through a systematic approach: For students/ future farmers: • scholarships at UFV or KPU in Agriculture or Food Systems For would be farmers: start • assistance in the form of grants and or / loans to be paid back on an sliding scale &forgiven after 5 years of active farming • For the landowner: access to capital to fund dyking, drainage or irrigation to specifically address issues on a piece of land so that it can be actively farmed; and encouragement to partner with those who want to farm As well, the fund could include assistance from professionals in preparing a comprehensive business plan to help ensure they have a viable plan to succeed. If we do it right, I believe we can change the economics of Agriculture in BC, creating a model that is the envy of the world.
The 2008 Chamber of Commerce ‘Economic Impact of Agriculture in Canada’ called Abbotsford ‘the Agricultural Capital of Canada’ – today, almost 10 years later we continue to top the nation in farm gate sales, and boast at least one in five jobs here are created by agriculture. There is more that can be done – Abbotsford can lead the way with an approach that proactively supports and encourages agriculture, removes obstacles and provides much-needed expertise and funding to really shift the economy. Here is a potential idea to build on: A big issue on people’s minds is that of affordability of agricultural land: The issue is not unique to Abbotsford. We feel it for sure – but it is an issue across the Fraser Valley and beyond.
Let’s ask the Elevate Abbotsford alumnus for their ideas to reimagine HOW we can transform our agricultural lands to their highest and best output; and use innovation to spark a new generation of farmers. We are well on our way with so many innovative initiatives and opportunities already here in Abbotsford and across the region. Abbotsford is already well known as a leader in Ag Innovation with companies including – BW Global, Nutriva Group / Vitala Foods, Vitalus Group, Vertical Farming and many others. Let’s do everything we can to engage with and advocate for this sector.
Here in the Fraser Valley we are so fortunate to have the University of the Fraser Valley and its Agriculture Centre of Excellence (ACE). As you may know – the centre functions as the Secretariat of the B.C. Agriculture and Seafood Research, Education and Extension Network, which is comprised of representatives from BC’s post-secondary institutions, industry and government that work together to build a sustainable food secure future through agricultural research, innovation and education. Over the last five years I have had the opportunity to apply my passion for Agriculture as I served as an advisor on the Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Institute for Sustainable Food Systems advisory. This innovative project included Orlando Schmidt from the Ministry of Agriculture here in Abbotsford and stakeholders from across the Southwest BC region. Their research is now complete, and the executive summary and full report are available online. The KPU Institute for Sustainable Food Systems investigates and supports regional food systems as key elements of sustainable communities; focusing on the potential of regional food systems in terms of agriculture and food, economics, community health,
policy, and environmental integrity. KPU created a comprehensive model that provides information and support for farmers, communities, business, policy makers, and others. I’d love to see Abbotsford take advantage of this valuable resource as part of AgRefresh as it would provide a rich data set for informed decisions about the impact of land use decisions in our city. Our staff and the industry professionals working with them on AgRefresh have done an exceptional job; and I am excited to see what the next phase brings.
Let’s leverage this expertise to further engage agricultural industry sector partners and the farmers - those who will actually make it all happen.

There can be a sudden sense that the time has come to get rid of the unnecessary so that you can scale things down if you are to have greatest success in the future. Part of this can be the realisation that you have taken on too many responsibilities that could be easily managed in the long term. This has to be your decision.
What you can really afford and what you might like to do or have could be two different things. You will be more easily tempted than usual to spend first and think later. You are far better to remain your normal careful self. Don’t be pushed into accepting any situation you feel could be too much combined with normal routine.

Friends or others involved in a group that includes you could surprise you with their determination to scale down in some way. This will firmly place you in a position where you need to weigh up your own situation, especially if there has been some sort of reliance on them. Answers will come from considering what you enjoy.
You could come up against a strong personality or somebody who expects to take control. You need to find a way to fight for your rights strongly but in a passive manner. The less you care about what other people think of you the better. It is hard to judge this at the moment and it can be better than what you expect.
With some proper focus and concentration you can gain clarity on something that has either been deliberately hidden from you or confused you in relation to somebody else. You should only take information into account, which can also be what others tell you, once you have investigated thoroughly enough for the truth.
There is a lot which won’t be clear. Time spent in careful consideration without making any final decision, will be time well spent. You need to maintain a fighting spirit when it comes to your own priorities. This is not an area where you should compromise lightly. Much is about giving others time to show their hand more.
Someone else can quite suddenly decide to get rid of certain things that don’t suit their purposes any longer. You need to be sure this does not load you up with extra responsibilities as you are too inclined right now to be overly generous of yourself. Insist on greater clarity when it comes to information that lacks transparency.
Your own thoughts are powerful right now, particularly when it comes to long-term vision for which you are willing to go into battle. Others find Scorpio mysterious and though they may attempt to predict where you will take things, they can never be sure because, in the end, you are very hard to read. You are just preparing now.
How somebody relates and what their true intentions are can be at odds and very difficult for you to read accurately. There is an underlying desire for power on their part, though you could very well be worrying them. Your freedom from this is to focus more on the future in relation to fulfilling what are important priorities to you.
Impatient behaviour from somebody else is best resisted without a great deal of comment as this will inhibit their ability to stir up trouble. You can approach this in a pragmatic manner while they will be more emotional. The most important thing here is to protect your own position. This can be part of bigger change to come.
Others will be willing to talk about future plans. You might discover that they expect you to accept them without question. However, it is more likely it will not fit with your own priorities and you have to be willing to say so. If you have been lazy of late when it comes to proper exercise or diet you can now become more motivated.
What you realise is best to get some good balance in place can be at odds with the actions you would prefer to take to enjoy yourself. This might equally take place with what children want to do as opposed to what you consider would be more sensible. Don’t succumb to pressure that can result in making you doubt yourself.
