PUNAHOU SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS STYLE GUIDE For use by Punahou School Employees and Volunteers The Punahou School Communications office uses the “Associated Press Stylebook” as its primary style reference and refers to the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary [www.m-w.com]. In general, AP Style discourages overuse of capitalization.
ALUMNI NAMES / YEARS ● In Punahou Bulletin Class Notes: ○ Bold alumni names and class years, not married names: ■ Cheryl Cambra ’99 Prather ■ Richard ’52 and Susan Wall ’52 Ludewig ■ Richard Ludewig ’52, husband of Susan Wall ’52 Ludewig … ■ Bold only when both first and last names are used: Noelehua Lyons ’91 Archambault attended the Reunion. Noe danced for her classmates. ● Class years go after full hyphenated names. Krissy Izumi-Nitao ’84 ● Class of ’52 (not ‘52) ● ’76ers (not 76’ers) ● For alumni years of the early 1900s: use the full 4-digit year once a class exists (beginning with kindergarten) in the 2000s with the same last two-digits. A reference to Evelyn Medcalf who graduated in 1927 would be Evelyn Medcalf (1927) Owens. The year is enclosed in parenthesis when in text; within a chart or listing, the year is without parenthesis. ● Always alphabetize by married name (not maiden) ● President Mike Latham ’86 and Reverend Jennifer Latham (for formal invitations or notes.) o Example: President Mike Latham ’86 and Reverend Jennifer Latham request the pleasure of your company to celebrate your generosity. ATHLETIC TITLES / TEAMS ● Team levels, gender and teams are lowercase: girls varsity basketball ● JV (not Junior Varsity) ● Gender carries no possessive (ex: girls varsity basketball) BOOK and PUBLICATION TITLES ● Book titles in copy are placed in quotes: “Dreams From My Father” ● Book titles in a review headline are bolded, no quotes (e.g., Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama) ● Book titles in non review headlines are placed in single quotes: ‘Dreams From My Father’ hits best-seller list. ● Use quotation marks around titles of books, movies, TV shows, plays, CDs. ● Magazine/newspaper titles are not placed in quotes. Uppercase titles of magazines and newspapers. BULLETIN PROFILES AND MEMORIALS ● Donor and Alumni Profile: Use AP Style for name references: full name on first reference, then last name on subsequent reference. (Exception: If the donor is deceased, use first name.) BUSINESS TITLES ● AP Style generally uses lowercase for business titles unless it is directly preceding the person’s name without a comma between the title and name.
