House flipping, purchasing diamond-in-the-rough properties and rehabbing them to sell at a profit, is competitive business. Flippers can spend a lot of time trying to find a property that fits their needs so some savvy investors came up with the idea of hiring ride-sharing drivers from Uber and Lyft to act as their property scouts. Training drivers, who are already out in the targeted neighborhoods, to identify potential flip-worthy properties frees up the investor’s time and gives the drivers the chance to make a little extra cash. Did you know you can now buy a house on Amazon? It’s true. Amazon now offers a number of prefab tiny houses on their site and the idea seems to have found an audience. Shipping may be free but sorry, drone delivery service isn’t an option. Sounds trendy but is it really a new idea? Some readers may remember a time when you could order a full-size house kit from a Sears and Roebuck catalog. Maybe there really is nothing new under the sun. Granny Pods, a tiny home located on the same property as the home of someone who will look after the occupant, offer seniors their own living space and privacy while making it easier for caregivers to monitor their loved one’s health and safety. Some Granny Pods now offer high-tech monitoring capabilities so the inhabitant can be checked on via remote access. So much for privacy. Other new options include a timed medication dispenser and a toilet that checks temperature and does simple urinalysis. Move over Granny. Sounds like Big Brother is moving in.

3 Tips For Creating a Durable Summer Lawn
Even the healthiest lawn will require some TLC to help it keep up with the high-traffic summer recreation season. Follow these three tips for improved summer durability to make sure your yard bounces back quickly from whatever you throw at it. Don’t stress; cut less. As a rule of thumb, when you mow your lawn you should never cut more than one-third of the grass blade height at a time. Scalping a lawn will cause stress, which can create problems all summer. To best protect your lawn before a high-traffic activity, mow at the tall end of the recommended range. For most grass species, this means increasing the mowing height to around 3 inches. Leaving a little extra length will also provide more cushioning for the soil and your guests’ feet. Fertilize correctly. When your lawn starts to brown in the summer, don’t throw fertilizer on it. Fertilizing in the spring and summer favors shoot and leaf growth at the expense of root growth, which is key for creating a healthy, hardy lawn. Feed your lawn twice per year (plan for mid-May and midSeptember), with the spring application featuring slow-release nitrogen fertilizer to minimize excess growth. Still feel the need to fertilize? Simply leave the clippings on your lawn after you mow. This not only saves time, but can provide up to 25% of the lawn’s fertilizer needs. Water properly. Instead of watering a little every day, water more deeply twice a week - aiming for a total of about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall - to help the water penetrate the root zone and then dry out a little in between waterings to keep good oxygen in the soil system. This will create a resilient, low-water
lawn with a strong root system that will thrive and require less watering during the hottest months. If you’re planning to host a large gathering on your lawn, avoid watering for two or three days beforehand, but then water immediately after. A drier lawn will help protect guests’ shoes, better support furniture and other structures and minimize damage from heavy traffic - especially if you’re playing yard games. “A natural grass lawn creates the perfect setting for a whole host of outdoor activities for the entire family,” said Bryan Ostlund, executive director of Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and turf specialists. “If you’re lucky enough to have a grass lawn, use it! Spending time outdoors is good for both mind and body.” With proper mowing, fertilization and irrigation, a healthy lawn can stand up to a surprising amount of traffic. (BPT)

When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home.
Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internetconnected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return. (NAPSI)
