I remember it well. A lifetime ago, after an exhausting season of planning, packing, cleaning and saying our goodbyes, we drove from NY to NJ, toddlers in tow. Arriving the day before the moving van, we did our best to entertain the kids before collapsing into bed in temporary quarters. Next morning we were up bight and early, ready for the arrival of the moving van so we could begin the process of settling into our “new” place.

The moving truck arrived, later than expected, and the first red flag of the day started waving loud and proud in the mid-morning breeze. Driver Dan from Mover’s Planet, (name has been changed to protect the guilty), sauntered to the back of the truck and asked me for the key to the deadbolt. Key? Seems logical that the guy who put the deadbolt on would have the key. Said guy was apparently back in NY. Bolt cutters eventually solved that problem. As the door of the moving van was raised, I thought my dear wife might have a coronary as the washing machine, lying sideways on top of the living room couch, came into view. A cracked headboard and other items that had fallen victim to poor handling were soon littering the front lawn. My memory may be fuzzy but right about then, I recall hearing my wife mumbling Driver Dan’s name as she slowly reached for the bolt cutters.

It was a day we’ll never forget and it became a lesson in perspective. I found myself thankful a million times over that day that we had budgeted the money for good insurance coverage. And as upsetting as the losses were, we reminded ourselves repeatedly, when it came down to it, “stuff” could be replaced and what really mattered was that our little family was together, safe and sound. We survived, replacements were made and we were soon happily settled into our home, complete with some new furniture.

Fixes To Rest Easy

Ongoing, routine upkeep is important to ensure the house stays running. While it may seem easier to put off tasks for a later date, checking off some smaller chores now can help avoid incidents or costly repairs later. “Home maintenance can be easy to overlook when the day-to-day gets busy, but it is important to always make time for safety-related tasks,” says Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. “Simple steps such as installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms only take a few minutes, and are crucial to keep loved ones safe from the deadly gas.” Amp up your home safety with the following quick tips: 1. Invest in light timers. Installing light timers for lights inside and outside your house can give the appearance of being home, whether you’re away on vacation or you’ve stepped out for the night. Timers only take minutes to install and can make a world of difference when viewed from the street. By using a light timer instead of leaving a light or two on when away, you can save energy and money while still deterring any potential thieves. 2. Clean the gutters. With the end of winter storms come outside chores, and clearing out your gutters is important to keep your home safe. If the gutters are too full, your home can suffer from water damage to the roof and water can pour over the gutters, putting other parts of your home at risk. While you are checking the gutters, inspect your shingles to make sure they are still in good shape. This can help prevent future leakage during a spring shower. 3. Install carbon monoxide alarms. Known as “the silent killer,” carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas, making it

impossible to detect without a CO alarm. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates there are more than 80,000 incidents per year. The most important step is to have CO alarms in your home - and enough of them. CO alarms should be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, and in all bedrooms or sleeping areas. CO alarms should be batterypowered or hardwired with battery back-up. First Alert offers a variety of alarms to help ensure your family is protected, including a tabletop alarm with a 10-year sealed battery and digital display to see detected levels in parts per million. 4. Store valuables. Having a safe at home can prove a wise investment when it comes to natural disasters. Through fire or flood, a safe can help protect important documents, family photos and keepsakes, as well as jewelry and other valuables. For the ultimate protection, look for a safe that is both fire resistant and waterproof (not just water “resistant”). Be sure to stow the combination in a secure place and share it only with trusted family members and friends. 5. Establish a family emergency plan. Knowing - and practicing - what to do in the event of an emergency is important. Ensuring loved ones are prepared for a fire, and know to call 911 and where to meet outside the home, is crucial. Other incidents may occur as well when you need to be prepared to stay in the home, such as a natural disaster or power outage. Having a plan in place for what to do if such an event occurs, and knowing where in the home is the safest location, can be critical if an incident occurs. Prevent Dangerous Outlet Overload The electrical system of many older homes is not properly equipped to

respond to today’s increased power demands. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than half of all homes in the U.S. are at least 30 years old. The wiring in many of these older homes was designed to handle around half of the electrical demands of today’s families with the everincreasing use of gadgets, gizmos and appliances demanding power. Here are some tips to prevent the dangers that can occur by overloading an outlet: • Never plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once or “piggyback” extra appliances on extension cords or wall outlets. Use only outlets designed to handle multiple plugs. • Know the amount of power you’re placing on an outlet or circuit. Some recommend each outlet or circuit should not exceed 1,500 watts. • Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into their own wall outlet since they are heavy power users. • If you find you are overloading an outlet or circuit in your home, you may need to contact a professional to help resolve the problem. If you notice any of these warning signs of electrical system overload, you should have your home inspected by a professional: • Lights often flicker, blink or dim momentarily. • Circuit breakers trip or fuses blow often. • Cords or wall plates are warm to the touch or discolored. • Crackling, sizzling or buzzing is heard from outlets. If you must attempt to put out an electrical fire, use a dry fire extinguisher or baking soda. Never try to extinguish an electrical fire with water! If the fire is large, try to turn off the main power source. Do not try to handle the fire yourself. It’s important to have all underground utilities located before digging to prevent costly and potentially dangerous contact with buried utility lines.
