Interview with Samy Wilson, authorofAnItinerantNurse.
Samy, tell us about you. Were youborninCyprus?
I was born in Malaysia, so Malaysian, Indian, Tamil. I came totheUKin1972todomynurse training in Dartford, Kent, at Joyce Green Hospital. Then I went on to Lancashire, Burnley, to do midwifery. Married my husband, Brian Wilson, and worked for a while there. Then I got
went to Canada, where I found these lovely employers working inthenorth.Iwastherefornearly 35 to 38 years. For retirement, we decided to buy a plot of land inCyprus,andsoitwaslovelyto retirehere.
And which area of nursing did youspecialisein,Samy?
Working in the north, I was a nurse for everything. It was what they call community health nursing, from emergency nursing to
to just like a general practitioner nurse. It really meant a lot to me to be able to do that. You know, because it was learning every day.
Sowhatfirstmadeyouthink,“I wanttowriteabookˮ?
Actually, when the pandemic started,Ihadtoreallytalkmyself out of travelling anymore in January 2020, because of all the troubles with travelling, isolations and masks. It was just too much ofahassle.SoIdecidedtoretire when I was 70 in January 2020. Then I decided to start doing somethingathomeandallmylife I've always written diaries. It wasn'thardtositandwrite,butit was just how to make it into a story.
Itʼs called An Itinerant Nurse. Tell us what the heart of the bookisabout.
It'saboutthepeoplethatImetin the North. But I've mentioned a lot of case histories without mentioning the communities or the people. And it's just being with this different league of nurses. I call them, you know, unique nurses. We're just travelling up to working with them. And also the people that I metalongtheway.
Now your book is globally published. How does that make youfeelinside,Samy?
Really excited. You know, because the few friends and colleagues whom I've been speaking to about my book, they're all excited to read about it. And the people that I worked with and also the people that I was nursing, they're all looking forwardtoit.Iʼmproud,andsois myhusbandBrian.
In what ways do you think your bookmightinspireother,Samy?
Tome,iftheywereyoungnurses who are going to set up to the North, I think they might be excited to think that they will comeacrossallthosethingsthat Ihavecomeacross.
