Interview with Sami Awad, author of The Sacred Awakening. Sami, tell us about you.
I am a Palestinian and I'm very proud to be a Palestinian. On record, actually, our family goes back 800 years of being a Christian family in the Holy Land. I'm also a son of a family that has always been committed to peace work and nonviolence. It started with my grandmother, Huda, who lost her husband in the
the 1948 war. My grandmother was a woman who always insisted that as a family, we will never take revenge and always try to seek peace and reconciliation with those who did this to us. And I'm an activist. I believe in peace and justice. What was the trigger for you to write the book?
Well, interestingly, the trigger for me to write this book wasn't the political reality that I was living in.

in. It was the disappointment in faith and religion that I was born into and grew up into, which is the Christian faith. I began to ask the question, what does it mean for me as a Palestinian to follow the teachings of Jesus? And the more I discovered Jesus and His teachings, the more I began to dedicate my life to this. And that's where the book idea came out. Because people started saying, “Where's the book?” So okay, it's time to sit down and put it on paper. Would you share one of the gems of wisdom from the book? One thing I discovered as I was reading Jesus, independent of the doctrine and dogma of the church, was the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are an invitation for us to engage in becoming Christlike. How do we develop Christ consciousness within us so that through that we could manifest kingdom consciousness, which is what Jesus calls us to manifest in our lives as we live on this earth? And so people will explore the journey of becoming Christ-like through the reading of this book. How do you feel now that your book is globally published? I have all the emotions. One emotion is relief. After all this time,
time, it's out there. Another reaction is, did I do a good job? Did I miss something? But there is that sense of satisfaction. The ideas are out there. They might not be in perfect writing since English is not my first language. But it's out there. And I hope that people will see some value in it. What do you hope people take away from your book? My aim in this book is for people to really get to know Jesus beyond the Saviour complex, beyond the person who just died for our salvation, that there is something deep and profound about how he lived and how he asked us to live. It is a book that I hope can resonate with people of all religions or all faiths or spiritual practises or none of this at all.
