Terrafame and the new battery chemicals plant

Draft of the new deep fairway 14.2 metres

EDITORIAL

Our sights set to the future T

his past year showed the whole world that one year is never the same as any previous year. Seen from the perspective of Port of Kokkola Ltd we have managed to cope surprisingly well with a globally difficult situation. The start of the year was very busy and we were heading towards an amazing 60% growth. The strong historical volumes has shown what we in Kokkola could have done, if the situation had stayed normal. This year we shall reach the same level as last year, which is a very good achievement. The companies must look beyond the acute Corona crisis. That is what we are doing, and to that end we have fresh positive news for our clients. As the text on the next page shows, the 14 metre fairway that was ready to use as of October this year allows vessels with a draft of up to 14.2 metres to call Kokkola. This is possible because we are continuing the practise of using the depth margin, which was established for the 13 metres fairway. The safe use of the depth margin in the 14 metres nominally deep fairway is a result of the excellent cooperation that we have with the pilots. They have a solid experience of the practise and, in addition, they can make use of the innovative system developed by Finnpilot.

I eagerly await the results of our joint marketing efforts with our partners in the coming years. In 2021 the biggest single investment will be the construction of a third Panamax quay in the Deep Port. Thanks to this investment we shall be able to serve the Panamax vessels more efficiently than before and ensure a high quality of service in a situation where the number of Panamax clients continue to increase. With this in mind I would like to extend my thanks to our personnel, as well as to the Port’s clients and partners for the responsible way you have all acted during the Covid-19 pandemic. You have taken seriously the safety measures required by the pandemic, and thanks to this the port has functioned undisturbed and we have retained our operational reliability. I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Successful Year 2021.

Using the depth margin offers our clients even more cost effective transports. An extra centimetre of draft means up to 100 ton more cargo at the deep quays. During the autumn the new sailing draft has been in frequent use and we have had a lot of positive feedback from our clients.

The tugboats have an important role assisting the big ships arriving in the port. In the picture taken in the summer 2020, we see the Capesize class vessel m/s Ds Charme, which is one of the biggest vessels ever that has called into the port of Kokkola.

The depth margin continues to be used

Vessels with a draft of 14.2 meters are piloted on the deep fairway Thanks to the depth margin ships with a draft of 14.2 metres can use Kokkola’s new deep fairway, which has a nominal draft of 14.0 metres. The additional 20 cm draft to the nominal draft has a considerable impact on the cost efficiency of the transports using big ships. One extra centimetre of draft means 100 ton more cargo, which can be compared to the weight of 100 middle sized cars.

–W

e already have proven experience of using the depth margin and a reliable system from the 13 metres fairway of Kokkola , which together makes it possible to use the depth margin of the new deep fairway safely, says Ilkka Sipilä, Regional Manager of Bothnian Bay Pilotage Area. The depth margin is additional water space/clearance, which is difference between the nominal draft and the dredged and trimmed draft. The Kokkola deep fairway, which was taken into use in the autumn, has a nominal draft of 14.2 metres, and the dredged and trimmed draft is, 15.77 metres according to the MW system. – The sea water level at any given time determines the how much of the margin can be used. As in the case of the 13 metres deep fairway, the usable depth margin is now 20 cm +/- the seawater level, Sipilä explains. The big ships have made use of the extra water from the

time the new deep fairway was completed in the autumn of this year. For example, the second week of December a Panamax vessel left the Deep Port of Kokkola with a draft of 14.14 metres, says Sipilä.

WHEN THE DEPTH MARGIN IS USED, safety always comes first. The higher the speed, the lower into the water the vessel is pressed. The system developed by Finnpilot allows the pilots to estimate with considerable accuracy how much water there is under the vessel’s keel, at various speeds. The calculations are based on the so called Huuska/Guliev formula, and includes a safety margin of 25%. Torbjörn Witting , CEO of Port of Kokkola, emphasizes that the 14.2 metres draft is important for the clients using the Deep Port. – In the Panamax class the size of the vessel is constantly increasing. The 14.2 metres draft brings more savings than before to the cost of sea transports, and it helps us to offer our services to the newest Panamax vessels. We are very thankful to the pilots, with whom we have a very good relationship that has allowed us to continue using the depth margin safely, Witting notes.

CUSTOMER PRESENTATION

Terrafame facing the future Terrafame’s battery chemicals plant in Sotkamo will start production in the beginning of 2021. This will probably result, amongst other things, in a significant increase of the number of containers that will go through the port of Kokkola. After completion of an approximately 240-million-euro investment , the battery chemicals plant will be one of the biggest nickel sulphate production plants in the world.

D

uring its 5 years of operation Terrafame has used the port of Kokkola for its imports of raw material and exports of its products to the world. With the battery chemicals plant Terrafame will change from a mining company to more of a chemical sector company, which will also show in the logistics. – The infrastructure of ports in Finland makes the expansion of this type of processing operation possible. As new basic nickel production is being built globally there is a major need for investment in the logistics and port infrastructure. In the case of Terrafame, these investments could be focused directly on production, because the existing domestic rail-

04

way and port infrastructure offers nationwide railway and fairway networks, thus enabling us to keep the investments in these areas fairly small, Janne Palosaari, Terrafame’s Commercial Director, emphasizes.

TERRAFAME CURRENTLY SELLS raw materials to the battery chemicals industry. After the battery chemicals plant has started its production, the company will produce pure battery chemicals, which will supplement the value chain. – We must create a logistics chain where extremely pure chemical products are transferred from Tuhkakylä (Ash Village) to the global markets. From now on we will not only bag but we will also load the products directly into sea containers here at our plant. The containers will be transported from the port to the plant and we will return them in time to be shipped with container vessels sailing on a normal schedule.

Janne Palosaari is the Commercial Director of Terrafame.

services and the industrial environment were decisive elements. This makes surveys by an independent, for instance a third-party surveyor, working on behalf of both the seller and the buyer possible. In the future it is also important for us that the port can offer high quality warehousing, as well as high quality handling services of container vessels, Hagström notes. According to Janne Palosaari Port of Kokkola was an important partner in the start-up phase of the production of Terrafame. – The products sold by Terrafame are priced on global markets and we must be able to export the products to them reliably and cost effectively. THE FUTURE OF TERRAFAME looks promising for many reasons, according to Palosaari. In the beginning of December, the company announced that its ore deposits and mineral deposits have again found to be larger than before, which guarantees the production for many decades. The life-cycle analysis of the company is also very important. According to it the carbon footprint of the main product of the batter chemicals plant, nickel sulphate, is 60 % lower than that of nickel sulphate on average. This is mainly a result of the bioleaching technology used by Terrafame. – The annual saved carbon footprint of the production of Terrafame is equal to the footprint of a car driving around the globe 85,000 times. In addition, our product is fully traceable, because the processing chain is within the area of one mining district, Palosaari says. The demand forecasts also point in the right direction. As the production of electric cars and stainless steel increases, the nickel markets are forecasted to grow from 2.4 million ton to 3.3 million ton by the middle of this decade. Terrafame’s production capacity of nickel sulphate in the new plant is 170,000 ton annually, which is estimated to be enough for the needs of one million electric cars. And when the operating range of the electric cars is increased, more nickel in the batteries is needed. – Advancing up the value chain emphasizes the importance of the transparency of the responsibility programs and the operation, as a fixed part of the business. This means that both we and the service providers in the supply chain must have proper systems in place to show that the responsibility policies are in order. The requirements rise in practise to a completely new level from the one for instance the basic industry is generally used to, Janne Palosaari explains of future developments. PHOTOS: TERRAFAME

When the production of the battery chemicals plant is at full capacity, 25 to 30 sea containers/day will be ready for export, Palosaari says. The logistics solution to be implemented by Terrafame in cooperation with the port of Kokkola is mainly based on round-trip transports. – The idea of a round-trip train is that the products for export, such as zinc sulphide, are loaded on trains from Terrafame to the port, and the raw material, for example limestone, is transported in full trainloads from the port to Terrafame. The empty wagons are hooked to the loaded wagons of the same train, Henrik Hagström, Export Manager of Terrafame, explains. There is already now a daily traffic between the port of Kokkola and Terrafame. One reason why Terrafame chose Kokkola was the turn-around of the trains and the ability of the operators to react to changing situations. In addition, Kokkola has three harbours for different products and a strong expertise, which, for example, helped to start up the export of zinc sulphide. – For example, access to sampling and laboratory

With the battery chemicals plant Terrafame will clearly change from a mining company to a chemical sector company.

Mirja Hihnala goes on a long “vacation”

Now the Panama Canal shimmers in the horizon The Panama Canal connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. Mirja Hihnala, who has been working for Rauanheimo for 40 years and has dealt with the big Panama vessels in the Deep Port of Kokkola hundreds of times, is retiring at the end of the year. One of these days she would like to sail through the world-famous canal she knows so well thanks to her job.

M

irja Hihnala, who comes from the village of Himanka, had already started her career in the business world, first as a hotel receptionist and then a travel agency clerk, when she saw an announcement in the daily paper, where Rauanheimo was looking for a shipping secretary. – A traditional office job and accounting were not my thing, so I thought, maybe this? At that time Sune Storbjörk was the general manager of Rauanheimo and he interviewed me for the job together with Kai Rustén. The interview did not last very long, but we went through all necessary details and I got the job, smiles Mirja Hihnala when she remembers the first meeting. And that was the beginning of a long career during which she has seen the growth of both the port of Kokkola and the size of the vessels, as well as the technological developments. Internationality has been the theme that cuts through the whole time in this job. IN THE BEGINNING the job at Rauanheimo meant preparing shipping documents but also forwarding, such as export and import customs clearances. Pretty soon the job description changed from shipping secretary to shipping agent, when shipping agent Mats Dahla left to pursue an academic career. – I welcomed the change. The Russian freight docu-

18

ments, for example, were big, size A3, and in between them there could be eight liming papers. You really had to hit the keys hard to get clear letters and numbers on the last page. The years the responsibilities and obligations accrued and Hihnala little by little moved to foreman jobs and finally to shipping manager. The last years, before retiring, she has been a Senior Advisor. Mirja Hihnala has seen the growth and development of the port of Kokkola from a vantage point. The core of the growth has been the transit traffic and the domestic industry. – In particular, the Deep Port has developed hugely. Quays have been built and the fairway has now been dredged to a depth of even 14 m. The clientele has grown and new ship owners have become customers. In addition, the cargoes handled nowadays are more of bulk. In order for the port as a whole to be attractive, it has to be very well located for optimal land transports. The railway connection is very important, as is the effective and functional cargo handling equipment. According to Hihnala all these prerequisites are met in Kokkola. – The right decisions have been taken. When the 13 m fairway was ready, many sceptical opinions were presented, questioning the attraction of cargo flows the new fairway draft might bring and whether the

investments would pay off. Now one can see that they have paid their worth many times over. The investments have created the opportunities for sales and the growth of traffic. The increased size of the vessels has underlined the importance of forecasting the weather. – For the pilots there are wind limits, and weather conditions can also influence the number of tugboats the vessel will be needing. At times I have felt like a meteorologist, when I have had to forecast the weather many days in advance to determine the water level at the completion of loading of a Panamax class vessel, so that the vessel can safely leave the port, Hihnala laughs and says that the trim of the vessel must be meticulously assessed. The order of loading is essential, that is, how much and at what speed into which hold the cargo can be loaded so that the stress on the hull stays optimal. Digitalization has already changed the way things are done, and will continue to change in the future. – The digital train is moving and nothing can stop it now. In addition, the equipment and software develop. Digitalization in the shipping traffic has been speeded up by, among other things, safety aspects. The digitalization improves the efficiency because data can be transferred online to various actors. It helps predicting the arrival of vessels and the estimated needs

– I have been privileged to have been allowed to work together with knowledgeable and nice business partners and work colleagues, Mirja Hihnala says.

of personnel resources. Rauanheimo has for a long time used their own electronic operation system. It has made working significantly more efficient and enabled notifications in message language to the authorities of the ship’s call in the port and the notifications required by them. THE SHIPPING AGENT organizes all the services that the vessel needs. In addition to exactness and language skills the work requires problem solving skills; the shipping agent’s task include handling the practical matters of both the cargo and the crew and any notification requirements. The crew of the big vessels are usually half a year on and half a year off. Hihnala’s duties have included a variety of things. Funny mishaps have also occurred. – Once we had to arrange a visit to a dentist for one Philippine seaman and a visit to a general doctor for another. Unfortunately, the person escorting the confused the fellows and soon the local dentist called me and asked for help, because the Philippine patient flatly refused to be seated in the dentist’s chair. Getting to know different cultures has brought its own interesting flavour to the job. – When you go aboard a Greek vessel you certainly notice who is the captain and at the same time you are offered good Greek coffee. In the 80s Indian vessels still loaded in Kokkola and when the voyages lasted a long time, the officers were many times accompanied by their families. The Indian wives and mothers were greatly admired, as they were very beautiful and exotic in their sari dresses. As ocean traffic is very international, places like Gibraltar and the canals of Panama, Suez and Kiel have become very familiar. When cleaning her work desk Hihnala happened to find a post card, the sender of which informed her that the ship had safely passed a sea pirate area in the Pacific. Nowadays the data on the ships’ positions are found online in the AIS system. – During the Corona pandemic my free time has been concentrated on my cottage, but in the future, I shall travel abroad again and visit new places. For instance, I hope to visit the famous Panama Canal. And what is best is that after these busy years I have so much more of my own time, Mirja Hihnala smiles and thanks everyone she knows for the good years working together.

– With the help of the hopper wagon a balanced and even flow of concentrate will be loaded onto the conveyor, says Jorma Harju.

The new hopper wagon makes the discharging of zinc concentrate more efficient The acquisition of a new hopper wagon for discharging zinc concentrate progressed to the trial run stage at the beginning of December. The investment by Port of Kokkola, valued at about 1.3 million euro, is part of their efforts to make the discharge of zinc concentrate more efficient. The new Mantsinen 200 ES harbour crane, introduced in last January, forms part of this big effort.

B

oliden Kokkola is the second largest zinc factory in Europe, and the zinc concentrate used in the process is discharged at Quay 9 in the Deep Port. The resulting product, zinc ingots, are then loaded from the adjoining Quay 8, using the Mantsinen crane, to be shipped worldwide. – The zinc factory produces about 300,000 ton of zinc annually. The zinc concentration in the raw material, zinc concentrate, is typically around 50 %. This means that we must import 600,000 ton concentrate a year to be able to fully utilize the capacity of the factory, says Jorma Harju, Manager of the Boliden Kokkola roast and sulfuric acid plant. The raw materials arrive from different parts in the world on average twice a week. Once a week a vessel loaded with zinc departs for Amsterdam or Rostock. Of the produced zinc, 85 % is transported on vessels to clients located in EU area.

EFFICIENT RAW MATERIAL FLOW are important for the factory, as the volumes are large and the storage capacity of raw materials is limited. – In zinc production we use a lot of different raw materials, aiming for the most optimal feeding mix as possible. This requires that the discharge of a cargo of raw material is successful and the zinc concentrate arrives on time to make the planning of the production possible Harju says. From the vessel, the concentrate is hoisted using a grab into the hopper wagon. This is the first unit in the discharge chain. The hopper acts as a balancer, providing a constant flow that is fed onto the conveyor. The conveyor line, which is almost one kilometre long, carries the zinc concentrate to the roast, where it is prepared to be fed into the roasting ovens. Jorma Harju is pleased with the investment, which will serve the needs of Boliden Kokkola for a long time. According to him it is really important that the cooperation with the Port is long-term. – The new hopper wagon is rated slightly more efficient than the old one. It improves the overall productivity and efficiency when we can discharge the same amount of zinc concentrate in a shorter time. In addition, the containment of dust and the working conditions have been considered carefully in the design of the new hopper wagon.

MY JOB

Väyläruoppauksessa tarvittiin Wasa Dredgingin koko kalusto kolmen vuoden ajan.

Development Manager Jyrki Roukala is responsible for the operational functions in the port as a whole.

All operative functions in h A smooth transit of the cargo flow in the port is the sum of many small details. Development Manager Jyrki Roukala’s main job is to manage the operative functions of the port as whole.

I

n order for the layperson to get at least some idea of the work description of the Development Manager, they have to know a little more about which details all are included and affect the movement of goods in the port. The big picture of moving goods flows includes rail, road, terminal, warehousing, crane, and vessel services; these are all provided by different companies, specialized in their respective service. In addition, the

22

production equipment needed for the handling of the goods flows must be in good condition. Various moving factors influence the everyday working of the port, from the number and type of vessels to the weather and the maintenance of areas and production equipment. Therefore, it is clear that someone must be responsible for the daily functions, and this someone is the Development Manager of the Port. Jyrki Roukala has instituted the weekly operative meeting as his most important work tool. SYSTEMS ARE ALSO NEEDED. The most important operative systems used in the Port are PRO24 and the Port Data System. The first provides the Port with a common desktop with every operator, and the latter combines data related to the production and the economy. The systems are not far from digitalisation, which is one of Roukala’s favourite subjects. Five years ago, the Port resolutely started to construct digital tools. The private LTE network, which was acquired last year, provides data transfer service, which enables high capacity data transfer using safe connections. If the Development Manager’s plans are realized, the coordination of the operations in the Port will make huge advancements thanks to the digitalization. – Today we create a situational picture at the Friday meeting, and the next update will take place on the coming Friday. Our goal is to create a digital map in real time. This would also enable time travel into the future, that is, we could see the situation in, for example, two days. And that is not all, Roukala adds, when answering the question about the job description of the Development Manager. He also takes part in marketing and supports sales. The development of production equipment is also part of the Development Manager’s job.

– Regular exercises and a good physical condition help you to do your job, says Jyrki Roukala.

his hands an hour. In the past months these have been held as virtual meetings due to the Corona virus. For example, on 13 November one or two representatives of the 13 operators participated in the weekly meeting. In addition to the weather forecast and the vessel traffic, the use and maintenance of the crane services, the traffic on rails and the rail services as well as the road and warehousing services were among things discussed. Information concerning changes in the work permit practices, due to the corona virus was also provided. – Such a comprehensive, weekly organized joint overview is very rare in the port business. In addition to providing information, various operative functions

ONE OF THE BIGGEST areas of responsibility is the railway network. In this context we should remember that Port of Kokkola is the biggest holder of a private railway network in the whole country, based on traffic. About 15 percent of all goods moving on rail in Finland comes from or travels to the port of Kokkola. – Rails are extremely important to us, because 5 to 6 million tons of goods move by rail annually. I am the chair of the coordination group of private holders of railway networks, and this is an excellent position in which to learn more about railway traffic. It gives me an opportunity to contribute to the development of legislation. Jyrki Roukala is known to be an enthusiastic physical exerciser. A couple of years ago he made an overhaul of his lifestyle, and diet played a big role. – I decided that I wanted to get back to the size I was when I actively played football. I lost 17 kilos in 17 weeks just because I found the diet that suited me best. 17 seems to be a magic number for me, because at the time I gained 17 kilos in 17 years. His exercise schedule includes running, cycling, floorball and sessions at the gym. He exercises about 10 hours per week. – A session at the gym in the morning gives a good start to the working day, and I am full of energy, especially in the mornings. I have noted that it is sensible to moderate the length of the workday. At the end of a too long workday one is not effective anymore; this time can be better used for exercising.
