Massive development of the Silverstone Port T
he Silverstone Port is the newest of our three port areas, and over the past 10 years we have also invested heavily in its development. The Silverstone pier has been extended twice. The latest extension will be introduced this December. There are now three berths. One of them has a draft of 11 m, which practically doubles the ship size in the Silverstone Port from 25,000 DWT to 50,000 DWT at best. At the same time, a new field area of 140,000 m2 has been built in the Silverstone Port. In addition, there are two 150 ton Gottwald 7-series cranes on the quay, which are the strongest cranes in the Bay of Bothnia in terms of lifting capacity. One of the Gottwald cranes was taken into use in early December. The offered functions, as described above, are suitable for many types of goods, such as the increased container traffic and the project transports of wind power plants, which began earlier this year. An enlarged field area and a wider range of cranes will, of course, also serve the needs of the existing customers and, if necessary, increase the unloading and loading capacity of ships.

Project transports of wind power plants are a model example of how Port of Kokkola develops solutions for new transports. The successful outcome required a lot of planning as well as finding common ground between the different parties. Among other things, we reached an agreement with the actors in the KIP area on the implementation of project transports through the industrial zone. The solution will also serve the project logistics of the KIP companies. On a fast schedule, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, succeeded to install the lifting equipment of the overhead lines for locomotives at the level crossing of the Armoury (Asevarikko). Development did not end there; in cooperation with the City of Kokkola we improved the official project transport route through the city to Highway 13 in the direction of Jyväskylä and to Highway 8 going north and south. I wish to extend a Thank You to all concerned for your excellent team work. As a result, we have already carried out almost 20 wind power shipments this year, and based on them we can state that the solutions have been very successful. I am also pleased that Port of Kokkola can make the world a better place by supporting sustainable energy production in terms of logistics. Wind power is planned for central Finland at 11 times Olkiluoto 3, which will have significant effects on climate. The wind power shipments are expected to continue at their current scale for the next five years. In other respects, we also look very confidently to the future at Port of Kokkola. Dear clients and cooperation partners of Port of Kokkola, and especially the staff of the Port Group: I wish you all a Successful Year 2022.

drivers, says Jalmari Ahola from the Port of Kokkola Ltd, the production manager responsible for wind power logistics. One example of a solution that improves the smoothness of transport, Ahola mentions the raising of overhead contact lines for electric locomotives at the so-called Armory level crossing. – The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency implemented a remote-controlled function at the level crossing, where the overhead contact lines are raised during transport. It was a really significant investment. According to Jalmari Ahola, the development work
at the port of Kokkola provides a good framework for managing wind farm transport projects and acting as a link between the supplier and the wind farm site. – In addition to the large crane capacity and the extended Silverstone quay, the port has competitive storage areas, because in addition to the Silverstone Port, we are able to utilize the storage facilities in the General Port along the special transport route to store various components. We also invest heavily in documentation, which serves as, among other things, inventory management. All of this facilitates punctual transportation between the port of Kokkola and the wind farm sites, Ahola says.
The new Gottwald harbour crane increases lifting capacity A new Gottwald 7-series harbour crane with a lifting capacity of 150 ton has been introduced in the port of Kokkola in December. – The acquisition is driven by both increased project traffic as well as container traffic, which is also growing. We already have one 7-series Gottwald of the same size, which enables simultaneous lifting of wind turbine components, among other things. Operational reliability in possible fault situations will also be further improved, says Tapio Lampinen, Technical Manager of Port of Kokkola. The new Gottwald has a reach of 54 and its driver sits at a height of 29 m, providing a good view of the ship’s hold. For example, lifting containers is
06
smooth because the crane is able to rotate around its axis. – It can get 12-14 empty containers out of the ship per hour, and an average of 10 containers per hour into the ship. The new crane is also very environmentally friendly, as it is powered by electricity instead of diesel, says Lampinen. This is an investment of just over EUR 4 million. – At the same time, we have extended the Silverstone quay by 120 m, which allows ships with a draft of up to 11 m to approach the quay. The quay extension and the new efficient crane will significantly increase the handling capacity in the Silverstone Port, Tapio Lampinen emphasizes.

The Official Inauguration of the Deep Fairway
T
he inauguration of the 14-meter deep fairway and the dredging of the harbour in Kokkola was held on 28 September in the presence of a large number of invited guests. The inauguration was carried out by Timo Harakka, Minister of Transport and Communications. The inauguration was rescheduled from the autumn of last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was also possible now to follow the inaugura-
tion remotely. The evening party was held at Kokkola Marine Park. – I am really pleased that, as soon as the new depth was introduced, it has been used. We even made shipping history when m/s Southern Harmony, with a carrying capacity (deadweight) of 182,249 tons, arrived in Kokkola last May. It is the largest vessel that has ever visited Finland, said Torbjörn Witting, Port of Kokkola Ltd’s CEO. The Kokkola fairway project is one of the Finnish Waterway Agency’s largest ever waterway projects. The total cost of the project was approximately EUR 63 million. The new route will improve the cost-effectiveness of both the domestic mining industry and transit transports. The environmental impact of the vessel traffic is also decreasing as the transport capacity of the vessels increases and the environmental load per unit of cargo transported decreases. The inauguration of the 14-meter deep fairway and dredging of the harbour in Kokkola was held in September.
Port of Kokkola Ltd and MeCarlos Oy signed an agreement in December on crane driver services. The agreement covers the years 2022–2026. Pictured are Torbjörn Witting, CEO of Port of Kokkola (left), Tony Läspä, CEO of MeCarlos, and Jyrki Roukala, Development Manager of Port of Kokkola.
The Christmas porridge tradition continues to be strong
P
ort of Kokkola has been inviting customers and partners in the vicinity for traditional Christmas porridge for the past 15 years. In addition, the Port’s staff and the company’s retirees have been invited. - The run up to Christmas time is very busy for most. The Christmas porridge tradition began when we won-
dered if we could get together in a Christmas atmosphere with a slightly larger crowd at one time. Christmas porridge has become really popular, and at the same time partners can meet each other and exchange news, says Vuokko Kalliokoski, Port of Kokkola’s Financial Manager. The Christmas porridge event, organized with a local partner, usually brings together about a hundred people. It is also part of the tradition that Matts Möller, one of the Port’s pensioners, delights guests with his Christmas carols. Möller joined the Port as a crane operator in 1966, when the Port acquired its first harbour cranes. Port of Kokkola would like to thank those gathered once again for a lovely event.

IN COOPERATION Yxpila Hinaus tugboats are a familiar sight in the port of Kokkola, for example alongside the large Panamax and Capesize vessels. The Kokkola based family-owned company has been towing ships and breaking the ice for close to 40 years.
T
ugboats are the work horses of a port. Small in size, yet strong and agile. With an experienced professional at the helm, incoming and outgoing ships are in good hands. – We have a great staff to whom we can hand over the responsibility and whom we trust to get things working, says Jani Hannula, CEO of Yxpila Towing. Assisting ships is not only a skill, but a real team effort, he says. When a Panamax or Capesize ship is arriving or departing, large ships and large masses are in motion. The task of the tugs is to assist the ships safely to the berth and back to the fairway in cooperation with the pilot. In addition to the precise coordination of the
roles of the tugs, the communication must also flow seamlessly with the pilot. – Our perspectives on the situation are different. The pilot, together with the ship’s skipper, see things from high up on the bridge, while we operate at sea level in the tugs. Together, we make sure that the ship stays in the area where it is supposed to go, Hannula says. When a large ship arrives, three tugs are reserved to assistant; one to assist at the stern and two at the sides. When the ship is on the fairway, the stern tug acts as a brake, and the assistant tug on the side of the bow steers the bow of the ship in the desired direction, if necessary. At the entrance of the port the roles are reversed, as the large ships as a rule enter the port basin stern first. When approaching the berth, the side tugs push the ship into a reserved berth, after which the vessel is ready to be moored. – The departing ship is usually assisted by two tugs. The fore tug pulls the ship out, and the rear tug accom-

panies the ship all the way to the end of the deep-sea fairway. This ensures that the ship does not drift low in the fairway, even if there is , for example, a steering fault.
Winter variations are relevant
In addition to towing ships, Yxpila Hinaus handles icebreaking in the port areas and, if the situation so requires, also acts on the fairway to assist the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency in ice breaking tasks. This winter, the tugs broke the ice exceptionally early, for the first time as early as on 2nd December. – I don’t remember when we would have been breaking the ice as early as this. However, winters are different, but for several years there have been no difficult ice winters. We consider such fluctuations to be quite normal. For us, the best winter weather is the base frost, when the ice breaks and cracks into small floats. It gets tricky when the wind presses slush into the harbour area, which easily freezes up to a meter According to Jani Hannula, CEO of Yxpila Hinaus, the company’s growth has provided an opportunity to invest in modern equipment.
thick. Then breaking is like driving in porridge, Jani Hannula describes. The equipment is of great importance in Yxpila Hinaus’ business, and the company is constantly developing the equipment. Between 2016-2019, Yxpila Hinaus has invested almost EUR 8 million in towing equipment. There are currently six tugs, four ASD tugs and two traditional tugs. In addition to Kokkola, the company also assists ships in other areas, such as in Pietarsaari, Vaasa, Kalajoki and Raahe, where Yxpila Hinaus currently has one tug stationed full-time.
Positive spiral of growth
Yxpila Hinaus is a family company owned by Jani Hannula and his sister Sari Ohtonen. The siblings redeemed the company’s shares from their father Mauri Hannula five years ago. The company employs 14 of its own employees and 4 contractors. Yxpila Hinaus is a great example of a company whose growth has been accelerated by the increase in traffic volumes in the port. - When I first came to work for the company in 1998, there were two tugs. As the number of large ships calling Kokkola as well as the overall traffic has increased, it has meant more work for us and created the opportunity to invest in more robust and modern equipment. This is needed, so that we can assist even the largest ships, Jani Hannula describes the positive growth cycle. Yxpila Hinaus serves its customers 24 hours a day, all year round. If necessary, we will start moving on a very quick schedule. The company’s tugs are also a familiar feature in events organised by the Port, as the tugs have contributed to the celebrations with spectacular water jets. Last May, the tugs of Yxpila Hinaus assisted m/s Southern Harmony in the Deep Port. This Capesize vessel was the largest ship ever to visit Finland.
Yxpila Hinaus’ tugs have contributed to many of the celebrations of the port. The photo is from the inauguration of the deep fairway in September.

MY JOB
Port Secretary hooked on Ultra Marathons Milla Vierimaa can easily be considered the fittest Port Secretary in Finland. Her participation in the 246-kilometre Spartathlon in Greece, which Vierimaa has completed twice, is a testament to her fitness.
M
An ultra-runner is required to have iron fitness and mental strength. For Milla Vierimaa, the best thing about running is moving outside and training in good company.
10
illa Vierimaa’s workstation offers a view of the Main Port, where everyday life is usually busy. Vierimaa has been working for the Port since December 2009, and during that time the operations of the country’s third largest public port have become more than familiar. Before Vierimaa started working there, her view of the port had been formed in a way typical of Kokkola residents; driving to the Port area with friends. This, at a time when free movement in the area was still possible. – I became interested in the job of Port Secretary because it matched my training. I originally came to work as maternity leave replacement, but here I stayed. In essence, the core of my work is still invoicing and payroll and personnel management, although my job description, too, has changed as the port has grown and developed. In addition to my diverse human resource responsibilities, I , for example, work as the procuremen secretary for machinery and equipment investments. The procurements include both new acquisitions and tenders for renovation contracts, Vierimaa says.
” I like it when there is a lot going on”
Milla Vierimaa joined Port of Kokkola from the private sector at a time when the Port was still a Municipal Enterprise. – Of course, in the early days, the way the municipal enterprise operated was surprising at times, but there was a lot of very positive things involved. Things are progressing according to agreed models ACTION PORT 3/2021
in the world of public utilities and they are carefully documented. The information is easy to find in the systems and not held in the head of just one individual. In the compact and efficient organization of the port, things are done in many ways. As a result, the tasks of many colleagues are familiar enough for a replacement to be successful, and matters progress efficiently even when a team member is on holiday, for example. A major change in Vierimaa’s career is related to 2015, when Port of Kokkola became a limited company. – A result of the incorporation, human resource management and its software were completely transferred to us. Especially at the beginning, the change caused a lot of new learning and data entry, but at the same time I got to know more about human resource management issues. – Fairly soon after the incorporation, I was involved in the procurement of a new payroll system. As we have several employee groups with, among other things, different working hours, the system had to be tailored to suit the Port’s needs. That project is of great benefit to my own work. Milla Vierimaa praises the Port office as a community where work is done in a positive atmosphere. – I like it when there is a lot of work and a lot of things going on. My own supervisor, Vuokko Kalliokoski, CFO, is reliable and supportive in my work, whenever necessary. Especially rewarding are the situations when I am trusted my own projects to complete and make sense.
Switching from football to ultra-running
Ultra-running is its own world, the deepest essence of which is difficult to explain to outsiders. Vierimaa’s runs began to increase when, towards the end of her football career, she spent more time on the substitute’s bench than in the starting line-up. – I tend to get excited about anything new related to exercise and outdoor activities, such as snowshoeing, SUP-boarding and kayaking. In addition to running, I visit the gym regularly and go skiing and cycling. At its best, it adds up to 13-17 hours of exercise per week.
Vierimaa tried a long distance run for the first time in a half marathon in 2010. – It felt just awfully hard. I ran my first marathon in 2013 in Nice. The race went well, but it was also the last official marathon I’ve ever run. Since then, I have done a variety of ultra-races, of which my favourite is the 24-hour run. Or well, right now it’s easy to say it’s a favourite race, but on the race day it may not feel like that at all, Vierimaa laughs. In any case, she has already accumulated nine 24hour races. Vierimaa’s personal best, 212.4 kilometres, places her seventh in the women’s statistics in Finland. The Spartathlon, which she has run twice, is a very special race, valued by ultra-runners worldwide. The Spartathlon starts in Athens on the Acropolis and ends in the city of Sparta, where runners touch the statue of King Leonidas at the end of the race. Runners have 36 hours to complete the distance. – That experience cannot be described. For example, short encounters with a race supporter or other runners in the dark Greek countryside are unique moments that I can remember when I’m old. Annukka Kuusio is my trusted supporter, who will receive the outbursts of a tired and sore runner. I hope the parts change and one day I get to experience Spartathlon as a supporter as well. Nor has Vierimaa even said her last word about the race. – This year, two Finns took part in a double Spartathlon, where they also ran back from Sparta to Athens. I’ve been wondering if I could try that too.
Emotions vary from one extreme to the other
It is not very surprising that many who know Vierimaa have wondered, what attracts her to push herself to mental and physical extremes on ultra-races. – I can’t answer that question. I hate race day and the week before. I’m angry like a wasp, and gloomy thoughts run through my mind during the run. But when the race is over, there will be a feeling that this was nice. Then you can pat yourself on the shoulder and say that it went well, Vierimaa describes her feelings with a twinkle in her eye. According to her, it is also possible to enter the flow state during the ultra-race, although it usually only lasts for a very short moment. When the physical condition runs dry, another machine starts, according to Vierimaa. After that, the runner goes for miles on an internal aggression, maybe thinking about the next service point. Sometimes the strength comes from having the mind positively grasp some of your own insights or a single, situational statement from the service staff along the road. – However, for me the most important thing about running is that I get to move outdoors and train in a good group. I hope to be able to continue with-ultra races for a long time to come. Milla Vierimaa’s workstation offers a view of the Main Port.

Tomas Mikkola – our new Harbour Master
Tomas Mikkola is the new Harbour Master of Port of Kokkola.
T
omas Mikkola has started as the new Harbour Master of Port of Kokkola Ltd., after Carita Rönnqvist, who will soon retire. Born in Kokkola 44 years ago, Mikkola returned to his old hometown, after spending more than 20 years at sea. – For most of my career to date, I have worked for the Åland shipping company Godby Shipping and on its Ro-Ro vessels. For the last seven years I was the captain. The years at Godby Shipping were really good and interesting. I told my then employer that I would be happy to move on to a new position at a time when I take with me only good memories, Mikkola says. The port complex in Kokkola is a new experience for Mikkola, who joined the Port in July. – Sometimes it’s okay to jump into the deep end and see what happens. I didn’t imagine it would be an easy
job, but nonetheless, I am surprised at the scale of the job and how much responsibility there is as a Harbour Master. A lot of interesting things have come to the fore, and it is already clear that I will not become bored in this job. Mikkola says that he is impressed by how dynamic and forward-looking Port of Kokkola is. For example, digitalisation is advancing at a rapid pace, and the Port wants to be a spearhead in many other ways. Mikkola’s family includes a wife and three daughters, aged 12, 7 and 5 years. The showy tube radio on the desk indicates that listening to music is an important part of the new Harbour Master’s free time. To the extent that the peak years allow for this, free time includes exercise, too, and it is also a dream to return to motorcycling.
Kokkola’s Deep Port a staging post for Hanhikivi concrete structures
C
onstruction and blasting work on the plant trench and the installation of the first permanent concrete structures are currently being carried out at the site of Fennovoima’s Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki. The concrete structures were cast in Estonia and were transported to Kokkola by barge in October, from where they continued their voyage to Hanhikivenniemi. Before being floated, the concrete cubes measuring 20x20 m and weighing 1000 ton were removed from the barge, which operation required a sheltered place and a water depth of at least 12.5 m. During towing, the wave height must not exceed 1.5 m. – There are hardly any such places available in
12
these areas, so the operation was carried out in Kokkola’s Deep Port. The barge was sunk, leaving the concrete slabs floating in place until Yxpila Hinaus transported them to the quayside for mooring, says Tomas Mikkola, Harbour Master. This unique operation went well, and after unleashing them from the barge, the massive concrete slabs floated as they should. – After all, this was a different and really interesting project to be involved in. It is great that the port of Kokkola is able to serve in such special projects as well, Mikkola says.

Massiv utveckling av Silverstenshamnen
A

Ny Gottwald-hamnkran ger mera lyftkapacitet
I

Kvällsfesten arrangerade i Havsparken i Karleby.
