Sample Itineraries Day One – a Tempe Sampler

Morning: Take a Hike Arise at sunrise and prepare for a walk or hike up “A” Mountain in the Mill Avenue District. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to capture the beautiful landscape of the Mill Avenue District and Tempe. Afterwards, relax with a cup of coffee, latte or macchiato at one of the cafes along Mill. After a java boost, head over to “Hole in the Rock,” a well-known natural sandstone formation in Papago Park. A short climb up will place you at the summit of the formation where views of the Sonoran Desert are limitless. Afternoon: Shopping in Tempe Tempe has so many shopping options, you may need to bring a bigger suitcase to carry your new treasures home. Start your shopping adventure by looking for unbelievable deals at Arizona Mills, featuring more than 175 manufacturer outlets such as Off 5th Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Last Call From Neiman Marcus and the Nike Factory Store. A quick drive from Arizona Mills will lead you to Tempe Marketplace. This exciting outdoor shopping, entertainment and dining experience features 1.3 million square feet of retail space, dramatic light and laser elements, outdoor fireplaces and spectacular water elements. Evening: Tempe After Dark Ready for fun? Tempe is known for exciting nightlife. Start off with appetizers and a tasty microbrew at Four Peaks Brewery or Gordon Biersch Brewery. Then, take in a show at the Stray Cat Theatre at the Tempe Performing Arts Center, or see an Arizona State University Herberger College of the Arts theater production on the ASU campus. Finish the night off by listening to a local band in “The District” at Tempe Marketplace.

Day Two – Fun for Families

Morning: Meet the Animals and Explore the Desert The Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park is a great way to experience the Sonoran Desert without leaving the city. The Garden is home to 50,000 desert plants from around the world. On your way out, be sure to pick up a souvenir at the Garden Gift Shop. The Phoenix Zoo, also located in Papago Park, is one of the nation’s top five zoos for kids. Home to over 1,200 animals and numerous attractions such as the Safari Train, children and adults are sure to have a blast.

ASU Gammage Afternoon: From History to High Tech Firefighters-to-be will love the Hall of Flame Fire Museum. The museum features five exhibit galleries and over 90 fully restored pieces of firefighter equipment and fire trucks dating from 1725 to 1969. Next, go high tech at GameWorks at Arizona Mills. The whole family can test their skills on the latest in virtual reality adventures and more old-fashioned prize games. Evening: Tempe Town Lake Bask in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert as the day comes to an end at Tempe Town Lake, a two-mile recreational haven, located near the Mill Avenue District. Biking and running paths surround the lake – perfect for a family stroll or cruise on rented bikes. Or, set sail on the lake by renting a kayak, pedal boat or an electric cruiser. Afterwards, have dinner in the Mill Avenue District but be sure to save room for a custom-made ice cream sandwich at Cookiez on Mill.

Day Three – Art Abounds in Tempe

Morning: ASU Art Museum Visit Arizona State University and take a self-guided public art tour. The ASU Public Art collection was recently named to the “Top Ten” of campus public art programs. Next, visit the remarkable ASU Art Museum and Ceramics Research Center. This museum has been named “the single most impressive venue for contemporary art in Arizona” by Art in America magazine. The building, designed by Antoine Predock, is almost as intriguing as the collections within.

Afternoon: Lunch in the Mill Avenue District Take a stroll in the Mill Avenue District where more than 100 eclectic shops, cafes and restaurants line this pedestrianfriendly area. Evening: Be Entertained… Looking for a little bit of Broadway in the desert? Wicked, Annie, Lion King, Rent, Mamma Mia and many others have made their way to the renowned ASU Gammage, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The new Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) is another jewel in the crown of a city that is known for its love of the arts. Located along the shore of Tempe Town Lake, the TCA is home to local theatre groups such as Childsplay, Arizona’s professional theatre company for young audiences, Tempe Little Theatre and dance and musical ensembles. In addition to the performances, the Gallery at the TCA showcases rotating visual arts exhibitions.
