Finding Your Way Tempe, at an elevation of 1,163 feet, was incorporated in 1894 and now encompasses 39.5 square miles. Located in the center of Arizona’s metropolitan area, Tempe (Tem-pee) is the sixth-largest city with more than 165,000 residents calling it home. The city, bordered by Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler, was founded in 1881 by Charles Trumbull Hayden when he established Hayden Milling and Farming Ditch Company and operated the first ferry service across the Salt River.
