Day One – a Tempe Sampler

Morning: Take a Hike Arise at sunrise and prepare for a hike up “A” Mountain in the Mill Avenue District. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to capture the beautiful views of Tempe Town Lake, Mill Avenue and ASU. Afterwards, relax with a cup of coffee at one of the cafes along Mill. After a java boost, head over to “Hole in the Rock,” a well-known natural sandstone formation in Papago Park. A short climb up will place you at the summit of the formation where views of the Sonoran Desert are limitless. Or, enjoy a leisurely jog around Tempe Town Lake, located just north of Mill Avenue. Morning: Meet the Animals and Explore the Desert The Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park is a great way to experience the Sonoran Desert without leaving the city. The Garden is home to 50,000 desert plants from around the world. The Phoenix Zoo, also located in Papago Park, is one of the nation’s top five zoos for kids. Home to over 1,700 animals and numerous attractions such as the Safari Train and Land of the Dragons, children and adults are sure to have a blast. Afternoon: From History to High Tech Firefighters-to-be will love the Hall of Flame Fire Museum. The museum features five exhibit galleries and over 90 fully restored pieces of firefighter equipment and fire trucks dating from 1725 to 1969. The nearby Arizona Historical Society Museum is focused on central Arizona’s history with special emphasis on the 20th century. Children will love the interactive exhibits. Next, go high tech at GameWorks at Arizona Mills. The whole family can test their skills on the latest in virtual reality adventures. Also, catch a spectacular show at IMAX Theatre, located next to GameWorks. Childsplay, Arizona’s professional theatre company for young audiences, performs numerous shows each year at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Check and see if your trip coincides with one of these entertaining productions.

Evening: Mill Around the Lake Bask in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert as the day comes to an end at Tempe Town Lake, a two-mile recreational haven, located near the Mill Avenue District. Day Three – Art Abounds in Tempe

Morning: ASU Art Museum Visit Arizona State University and take a self-guided public art tour. The ASU Public Art collection was recently named to the “Top Ten” of campus public art programs. Next, visit the remarkable ASU Art Museum and Ceramics Research Center. This museum has been named “the single most impressive venue for contemporary art in Arizona” by Art in America Magazine. The building, designed by Antoine Predock, is almost as intriguing as the collections within. Afternoon: Lunch in the Mill Avenue District Take a stroll in the Mill Avenue District where more than 100 eclectic shops, cafes and restaurants line this pedestrian-friendly area. You’ll be sure to find the perfect spot for lunch – the choices are only limited by your appetite. You can try Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Asian or American fare. Just be sure to sit outside on a patio and enjoy the sunshine. After lunch, don’t miss the art exhibition at the post office, located on the corner of 5th Street and Mill Avenue, or visit the free Gallery at the Tempe Center for the Arts, featuring rotating themed exhibits throughout the year. Evening: Be Entertained… Engage all of your senses in Tempe. Tempt your tastebuds with a scrumptious dinner at one of Tempe’s favorite eateries. Then, see an exciting Broadway show at ASU Gammage. Wicked, Annie, Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia and many others have made their way to the renowned theater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Tempe Center for Arts (TCA) is another jewel in the crown of a city that is known for its love of the arts. Located along the shore of Tempe Town Lake, the TCA is home to local theatre groups such as Childsplay, Tempe Little Theatre and dance and musical ensembles. Or, go to Tempe’s newest venue, MADCAP Theaters, for an independent film screening, a poetry slam or live music from rockin’ and jazzy local musicians.

We collect and present works of art to stimulate, challenge and delight a diverse audience; areas of particular emphasis are contemporary art and new media including video art. ASU Art Museum also has the largest collection of art from Cuba in the U.S. and is home to the Ceramics Research Center, a collection of more than 4,000 pieces. One of the Museum’s largest collections, the print collection spans from the 14th-century to contemporary works. The Museum hosts an annual Short Film and Video Festival each April and a Family Fun Day in July. Admission is free.
