FARM RICH COUNTRY Mesa’s bountiful harvest is proudly shared with visitors. Fresh experiences and a treasured heritage of family farms and long-standing festivals make for lasting memories. Serving as a culinary gateway to Phoenix and Scottsdale, the neighboring farms in and around Mesa are providing a bounty of seasonal goods for visitors to enjoy year-round. Citrus in January, peaches in May, olives in October. Travelers can time their visits to experience chef-driven dinners in the most romantic of settings. FRESH SQUEEZED The Orange Patch is one

of Mesa’s original citrus growers. Located north of the city, the Orange Patch features 110 acres of citrus and 30 acres of sweet corn. Passersby can enjoy the fragrant orange blossoms each spring when temperatures begin to rise. The sweet neroli scent can be smelled for miles and National Geographic named Mesa a top Food Drive city sighting the many thriving citrus growers and miles of city streets lined with groves. Peak season for orange production is January and February. Guests visiting are welcome to watch the picking and production process with special tours offered for groups. Orange blossoms are blooming every March and April and you can see folks drive by with windows wide open to take in the fragrant fumes. The store also has fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh honey, homeade chocolates and other gift items for sale.

A COMMUNITY LIKE NO OTHER Agritopia

is a community on the edge of the rural-urban interface. This modern-day village has deep roots having long-served as the Johnston family farm. Rather than a huge field of one crop, a patchwork of numerous specialty crops are grown here that change with the season. Agritopia, located in Gilbert, is lined with intersecting pathways that allow curious visitors to easily view the crops and visitmesa.com

see firsthand how fertile Arizona’s desert landscape truly is. The same-day harvest is sold at the nearby Farm Stand, as well as the being served at Joe's Farm Grill and The Coffee Shop - two freestanding restaurants on-site that were born out of the original Johnston family home and a remnant farm building. All of the produce on the farm is grown under the USDA organic protocol with residents and nonresidents engaged in community gardening. The entire community is 160 acres large with 15 acres dedicated to farmland.

ust southeast of Mesa in the charming town of Queen Creek, guests can make reservations for an exquisite dining experience at Schnepf Farms, a fourth generation family farm and the largest organic peach grower in Arizona. Schnepf Farms hosts their Dinners Down the Orchard program in the middle of their 300-acre farm. Offered a handful of times a year, each one is hosted by a notable Valley chef and features the culinary bounty of the season. Past chefs have included Iron Chef Beau MacMillan from elements at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain and Chef Vincent Guerithault (pictured) vof Vincentâ€™s on Camelback. A Gathering Place Mesa Arts Center – the largest arts and entertainment complex in the

Southwest – has become of the most unique gathering places for any art afficianado visiting the Valley of Sun, with intention. An inviting oasis by day and a luminous beacon by night, the design of Mesa Arts Center was inspired by the unique character of the Sonoran Desert – a rich desert, mountain and canyon environment. The campus includes a complex of four theaters, Mesa Contemporary Arts’ galleries and exhibition space, two Art Studios buildings with 14 visual and performing arts studios and classrooms, informal performance areas, administrative support space, and a 700-foot Shadow Walk that creates an inviting, shaded outdoor oasis. A

AWESOME BLOSSOMS Each spring, wildflowers pave Mesa’s nearby hiking trails and the desert overflows with hues of red, purple, orange, yellow and blue – all accompanied by the vibrant green shades of Arizona’s indigenous desert flora. Wildflower season varies each year and is dependent on fall and winter rainfall amounts. Blooms are usually at their peak in mid-March but can start as early as February. Typically, guests can expect to see fields of wildflowers at various elevations in our surrounding desert including brittlebush, desert marigolds, lupine and local favorite, the Mexican gold poppy. From March through late May, ocotillo blossoms put on a scarlet display in the desert landscape. Prickly Pear, the iconic purplish-red, flat-paddled cactus, will usually begin to bloom in early April continuing through late May. Their bright red fruit is a staple in the diets of birds and desert critters. The mighty Saguaro cactus displays its creamy white blooms usually by the middle of May, with late May to early June as the peak time. BIRD WATCHING SITES Usery Mountain Regional Park & Nature Center: Adjacent to the Tonto National Forest and set on more than 3,500 acres at the western end of the Goldfield Mountains. The Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Water Ranch: Nearly 200 species of birds have been identified at this 110-acre wetland wildlife sanctuary for recreation, research and education. Coon Bluff and Granite Reef Recreation Areas (Tonto National Forest): Located in the lower Salt River basin, this major river system offers corridors for birds that migrate along the river.

BIRD SPOTTING Birding is a popular sport in Arizona, whose diverse terrain offers a spectacular playground for more than 500 species. The love for birding can be felt across the state with festivals and programs offered for nature lovers on the quest to capture a rare sighting. Though Southeastern Arizona is widely known for birding, many of the same species can be spotted throughout Mesa and the surrounding region. From hummingbirds and flycatchers to loons, herons and the occasional bald eagle, the bird counting opportunities are endless.

PARADISE IN THE DESERT The Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Water Ranch is a 110-acre wetland wildlife sanctuary for recreation, research and education. Visitors seeking respite and relaxation can find it here among the 4.5 miles of trails that are lined with lush, natural landscaping all part of the ethno-botanical garden on-site. The Preserve also boasts one of the best night sky views and is home to the Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory. Don’t miss the free public star parties held on the second Friday of each month starting at dusk. SURF’S UP Visitors can escape the crowded hotel pool and head to the Rhodes Aquatics Complex in Mesa. Here, desert surfers ride the waves on the FlowRider, the ultimate in water recreation and fun. The sport of flowriding combines all board sports into a wild and exciting ride on a continuous wave with as much force and power as the ocean. Intended for all age swimmers, visitors to Mesa can enjoy the experience all summer long with special themed sessions including Ladies Night.

WET & WILD Even though Mesa is in the heart of a desert, visitors can take advantage of the city’s close proximity to a water recreation paradise. There are three lakes and two rivers surrounding Mesa that allow for desert boating, fishing, rafting, kayaking and water skiing. the cool waters of the Salt River via inner-tube! The Tonto National Forest - the fifth largest and one of the most visited “urban” forests in the country – serves up a wilderness terrain unlike any other including the Salt River which carves out Mesa’s northern border. The newest wildlife to view here are the stand-up paddle boarders, better known as SUP, that brave the mild rapids and float along the river from the many launch points including Granite Reef and Coon Bluff. Boarders can rent from No Snow SUP and equip their rental car with a rack and head to Mesa’s closest retreat, Butcher Jones Beach at Saguaro Lake. The sandy shoreline offers convenient parking and walk-up access making it an ideal stop for a picnic or afternoon dip in the lake. Kayakers, too, appreciate the easy water entrance and exit that only a beach can provide. Saguaro Lake itself offers more than 22 miles of shoreline and lodging at Saguaro Lake Ranch – another great launching point that offers kayak and tube rentals for overnight guests.

Two standouts in the city include Holly’s Homemade Bakery & Café where the smell of sweet overwhelms the senses. Homemade, pull-apart cinnamon rolls with warm icing are a specialty as are the cake bites in assorted flavors and the pecan kringle with everything baked in small amounts. Wander along Main Street and pop into Sweet Cakes Cafe. This home-grown café was recognized by Hollywood as a Bodacious Bakery on the TLC network. Rows of cookies, brownies, blondies and more line the back wall of the bakery with flavors ranging from peanut butter to oatmeal coconut and the always classic chocolate chip. Roam If You Want To Recognized by the Arizona Office of Tourism as one of the most scenic byways in the state, the historic Apache Trail, just east of Mesa, was built more than 100 years ago serving as a main access way to the Roosevelt Dam. Named for the crews of Apache Native Americans who helped pave this treacherous path, the Apache Trail was completed in 1905. Today, hitting the trail is still one of the most popular day trips for anyone visiting the Mesa area. As you pass the mysterious Superstition Mountains and head into the foothills of the Tonto National Forest, the area continues Getting There: To access the Apache Trail from Mesa, head east on Main Street or east along the U.S. 60 to the Idaho Road exit. Off Idaho Road, follow signs toward Highway 88. The trail will weave you past three lakes – Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt. Paved road ends just beyond Tortilla Flat. Take caution while driving, the trail features numerous switchbacks throughout the entire route that connects Mesa to Globe.

Around every bend and strewn along both sides of Mesa’s historic Main Street are 38 different and unique art works that make up the city’s public art collection. It doesn’t matter which direction your path takes you – these fine-crafted, stunning sculptures are everywhere! Check out childhood favorite Humpty Dumpty, who just happens to be sitting on a wall, and don’t miss a popular photo opp in the larger-than-life Big Pink Chair. A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME Chicago Cubs fans will finally have a reason to celebrate as America’s favorite team moves into a brand new stadium and training facility. Cubs Park, dubbed Wrigleyville West by fans and locals, is across from Mesa Riverview, a large upscale shopping and entertainment center. Now Open: Mesa Grande Cultural Park Mesa’s newest attraction for visitors is actually the city’s oldest – 700 years old as a matter of fact! Opening to the public regularly for the first time is Mesa Grande Cultural Park. This ancient Hohokam mound has been under the care of the City of Mesa for nearly 30 years. Visitors are now able to walk the interpretive trail from October to May 15, 2014. The archaeological staff of the Arizona Museum of Natural History have helped preserve and develop the site, which is estimated to date to A.D 1100-1450. The Hohokam built a civilization that lasted 1,500 years in the Salt River Valley. Mesa Grande is one of only two remaining Hohokam mounds in the metro Phoenix area. The ruins temple mound is larger than a football field in both length and width and is 27 feet tall at its highest point. Today, the site remains intact with very few excavations that have impacted its integrity. Mesa Grande is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project.
