METRO Light Rail Expansion During your visit to Downtown Mesa you may notice construction on the city’s newest visitor experience – Light Rail. Starting at the Sycamore Station (Dobson Road) heading east to Mesa Drive will be construction zones as the city expands light rail service for 3.1 miles. The $200 million Central Mesa expansion will add four stops bringing the total to 32 stops for the entire system. Construction will continue through 2015.

PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 3400 E. There are three passenger terminals, car rental facilities, shops, restaurants, services and ground transportation. Most airlines offer non-stop and direct flights from major U.S. cities. The Rental Car Center accommodates all airport rental car companies. Shuttles take passengers from designated areas outside the terminal baggage claim areas to the off-site Rental Car Center. METRO Light Rail: To travel to Mesa from Phoenix Sky Harbor via METRO Light Rail, take the free PHX Airport Shuttle to the 44th Street and Washington METRO light rail stop. The free airport shuttle travels to all three terminals and was designed for travelers with luggage. Seven days per week.

FALCON FIELD MUNICIPAL AIRPORT 4800 E. The PHX Sky Trainâ„˘ is an automated train that will transport travelers between the 44th Street and Washington METRO light rail, the East Economy parking area and Terminal 4 in its first stage. The train is free and will run 24-hours a day with predictable travel times â€“ arriving at stations every three minutes during peak periods and delivering passengers to their destinations within five minutes of boarding.

Learning Mesa is fast becoming the regionâ€™s next big college town with the development of the Mesa Center for Higher Education. Sparked by a city-driven initiative and commitment to expanding and attracting higher education institutions to the area, Mesa will soon open campuses for four new private, liberal arts colleges. Each institution is nationally ranked as a top college in the U.S. and will complement the existing education offerings in Mesa including A.T. Still University, Arizona State University Polytechnic Campus and Mesa Community College, to name a few. The coming year will turn Downtown Mesa into a campus environment with three colleges anchoring themselves inside the Center and a fourth opening its own campus along the new Metro Light Rail line. Give your wallet a break and enjoy Mesa’s museums as part of the 3 for Free program sponsored by Target. Free admission is offered to three museums in Downtown Mesa on the first Sunday of every month. Arizona Museum for Youth, Arizona Museum of Natural History (pictured below) and Mesa Contemporary Arts all open their doors to guests on this popular monthly outing.

Wild, Wild, West

One of the most popular day trips for anyone visiting Mesa is along the historic Apache Trail through the mysterious Superstition Mountains and into the foothills of the Tonto National Forest – the fifth largest forest in the United States. To this day, the area continues to pay homage to its Western roots which took shape in the late 1800s. Be sure to stop in at Tortilla Flat, an original stagecoach stop settlement that is now a saloon with saddles for barstools and walls festooned with currency and business cards from around the world. Don’t miss out on the “Killer Chili” and other Southwestern specialties. Make your way to Mother Lode Mercantile and pick up some prickly pear fudge at their old-tyme Candy Shoppe while you treasure hunt for other unique Arizona souvenirs. Complete your day trip along the trail with a tour on Canyon Lake and hop aboard the Dolly Steamboat to cruise the lake’s secluded inner waterways.

The Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Water Ranch Nearly 200 species have been identified at this 110-acre wetland wildlife sanctuary for recreation, research and education. Birdwatchers and visitors just seeking respite and relaxation can find it here among the 4.5 miles of trails, the Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory and ethnobotanical garden. Everything’s Coming Up Roses Visit one of the largest public rose gardens in the Southwest on the campus of Mesa Community College. The Rose Garden boasts 10,000 rose bushes and is a testing site for All-America Rose Selections and the American Rose Society. The Rose Garden has become a popular destination for many students, local residents and visitors. This living botanical laboratory offers up an ideal place to study and seek respite while on vacation.

The Sky’s The Limit Mesa is entrenched in aviation history and continues to serve as one of the leaders in aviation technology and education. At Mesa Historical Museum’s new Downtown Mesa location, visitors can view a new exhibition highlighting 30 years of Boeing history in Mesa and even set eyes on part of the original Spruce

Goose. At the Commemorative Air Force Museum – Arizona Wing, daredevils can take to the skies on a variety of war birds. Here, pilots take visitors on thrilling aerial adventures on a variety of aircraft including the popular Sentimental Journey – a B-17 Bomber known as WWII's Flying Fortress.

Exploring Our Desert Before heading out on your Sonoran Desert adventure, take caution. While the desert offers breathtaking scenery, it can also be unfamiliar territory for out-of-town guests not acclimated to the varied temperatures and rugged terrain. Below is a list of tips before you go: • Always pack water. • Dress appropriately. Wear closed-toe shoes. A hat and sunglasses are also recommended. • Apply sunscreen. Even in the winter months, Arizona’s direct sunlight can cause sunburn. • Hike with a friend. If heading out solo, let the park ranger know of your plans. • Be alert! The desert is full of critters. Make noise so animals know of your presence. • Watch where you step! It is common to pick up cactus needles during your hike. Bring a fine-tooth plastic comb for removing the needles – never use your fingers!

Every March thousands of people break for spring and catch baseball fever as the Chicago Cubs settle in at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. Today the Cactus League’s 15 teams provide fans with the ultimate in baseball action in Arizona. Chicago Cubs pitchers and catchers arrive in mid-February and you can catch them practice at Fitch Park located just south of Hohokam Stadium at 651 N. Center. Come early, lucky fans have a good chance at getting a few signatures and photos with the team.

FUTURE OF SPRING TRAINING IN MESA The City of Mesa recently broke ground on the new Chicago Cubs Spring Training complex. Residents voted to approve funding for the new facility which provides Chicago Cubs fans three more decades of spring training action in the desert! The new stadium (pictured above) will be located west of Mesa Riveriew (Dobson Road and 8th Street) and is slated to host its first spring training season in March 2014. The prickly pear fruit is harvested here in the Sonoran Desert and its sweet pulp is often rendered down into a bright fuchsia flavorpacked syrup used in cooking. Guests rave about the prickly pear ice cream at Tortilla Flat Country Store & Ice Cream Shop and can be found taking home a pound (or two…or three!) of the prickly pear fudge at Mother Lode Mercantile at Goldfield Ghost Town. Lights, Camera…Chomp! Hollywood has cast a large spotlight on Mesa and the surrounding region’s dining hot spots. The treasured familyrun business at Sweet Cakes Café has been serving up platesized cookies from scratch and was featured on TLC’s “Best Food Ever” in their Bodacious Bakeries episode. Locals were already flocking to The Coffee Shop at Agritopia long before owners Jenna Flowers and Jessica Cuff won their battle on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”. This dynamic duo sport one of the most mouth-watering bakery displays with flavor-of-the-day cupcakes (pictured) and signature scones.

Food Network’s Guy Fieri stopped by next door at Joe’s Farm Grill and filmed “Diners, Drive-ins & Dives”. This original homestead-turned-burger stand is known for doing common food uncommonly well. Even Mike Rowe from Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” got messy at Queen Creek Olive Mill. The Apache Trail Recognized by the Arizona Office of Tourism as one of the most scenic byways in the state, the historic Apache Trail, just east of Mesa, was built more than 100 years ago serving as a main access way to the Roosevelt Dam construction site. Named for the crews of Apache Native Americans who helped pave this treacherous path, the Apache Trail was completed in 1905 at a cost of more than one-half million dollars. Today, hitting the historic Apache Trail is still one of the most popular day trips for anyone visiting the Valley with inviting attractions lining the trail. As you pass the mysterious Superstition Mountains and head into the foothills of the Tonto National Forest, the area continues to pay homage to its Western roots which took shape in the late 1800s.

Getting There: To access the 48-mile Apache Trail from Mesa, head east on Main Street or east along the U.S. 60 to the Idaho Road exit. Off Idaho Road, follow signs toward Highway 88. The trail will weave you past three lakes â€“ Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt. Paved road ends at Tortilla Flat. Take caution while driving, this largely unpaved trail features numerous switchbacks throughout the entire route that connects Mesa to Globe.
