Celebrating the Centennial On Feb. 14, 2012 Arizona will be celebrating 100 years of statehood. Arizona became the 48th and last contiguous state added to the United States of America. Mesa will be joining in the year-long birthday celebration hosting a series of events leading up to Valentine’s Day 2012 as part of the Mesa Takes Flight initiative. From the breathtaking beauty of flying animals to the ingenuity and progress of aircraft, flight has played an integral part of Mesa’s heritage and its economic base today. Rooted in Citrus
Arizona has deep roots in the citrus industry when explorers brought the curious fruit with them to the “new world”. For Mesa, farmers began planting citrus crops in the late 1800s as Arizona’s climate was admired for its minimal frost, low humidity and of course – sunshine. You can still experience the joys of the harvest at the many citrus stands that line the north end of the city. Peak season for orange production is January and February. Each March, visitors to Cubs Spring Training games make a stop at Mesa’s citrus stands (listed on page 45) to take their pick of fresh oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. Guests visiting the Orange Patch, one of Mesa’s original citrus growers, are welcome to take part and watch the picking and production process with special tours offered upon request. Here, the country store and produce stand also boasts freshly-squeezed orange juice, local honey and other culinary and gift items for sale. An extra special treat for locals and visitors is the drive along McKellips Road with the windows down to enjoy Mesa’s fragrant orange blossoms.

It’s a Farmed Life! In Mesa, our bountiful harvest is one that we proudly share with our visitors. Here, fresh experiences and a treasured heritage of family farms and long-standing festivals make for lasting memories. Serving as a culinary gateway to the Valley of the Sun, be sure and include these offerings into your itinerary during your visit: • Guests can make reservations for an exquisite dining experience at Schnepf Farms. Dinners Down the Orchard is a unique series of chef-driven events in the “middle of our peach orchard”. Offered a handful of times a year, each one is hosted by a notable Valley chef and features the culinary bounty of the season. • Just east of Mesa is the Queen Creek Olive Mill - Arizona’s only family-owned and operated working olive mill and farm. Take an informative tour, taste more than a dozen exclusive olive oil blends and flavors, and dine at del Piero – the Mill’s Tuscaninspired eatery. • Tours at Superstition Farms are aimed at demonstrating daily life on a working “agri-tourist” family farm. Mesa takes its name from the Spanish word meaning “table”, a term used to reference land above the bluff. The first known settlement in the Mesa area was about 2,000 years ago by an Indian civilization now called the Hohokam (meaning those who are gone). Long-term residents did not arrive until 1877 as Mormon pioneers settled just below the “mesa” next to the Salt River. In 1878 a second group of pioneers arrived settling upon the “mesa”. The pioneers excavated the ancient Hohokam canals, again bringing irrigation and ensuring the rebirth of a community.

Metro Light Rail
is available at Sycamore Station, on Main Street just east of Dobson Road. A variety of fare options are available including All-Day, 3-, 7-, and 31-Day Passes. Transit fare can be purchased from Fare Vending Machines at all METRO light rail stations and select off-site locations. METRO Light Rail and Valley Metro share the same fare system. Extended service is offered on the weekend. Beginning in the spring of 2012, the City of Mesa will be preparing the groundwork for the much-anticipated METRO Light Rail extension. This state-of-the-art project will extend the Valley’s rail system through Downtown Mesa, connecting its riders to even more of Mesa. FORT MCDOWELL YAVAPAI NATION
North of Mesa is the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, a 950-member Native American tribe which calls Central Arizona’s upper Sonoran Desert home. The Fort McDowell Yavapai, the “Abaja - the people” are one of three Yavapai tribes in Arizona. The Yavapai are among the Yuman-speaking peoples, which also include the Hualapai, Havasupai, Kumeyaay, Pai Pai, Cocopah and other Southwestern tribes. The stately saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States and can only be found in the Sonoran Desert. Iconic in its shape due to its many arms, this gentle giant is the symbol of the region and one of many plants in Arizona protected by the Native Plant Protection Act. It can take up to 50 years before the plant blossoms with the beautiful state flower and approximately 75 years before appendages sprout. With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150200 years old and grow to be between 40-60 feet tall. When fully hydrated they will weigh between 3,200-4,800 pounds.
When in Bloom Each spring, wildflowers pave Mesa’s nearby hiking trails and the desert overflows with hues of red, purple, orange, yellow and blue – all accompanied by the vibrant green shades of Arizona’s indigenous desert flora. Wildflower season varies each year and is dependent on fall and winter rainfall amounts. The Legendary Apache Trail Lost Dutchman State Park
Recognized by the Arizona Office of Tourism as one of the most scenic byways in the state, the historic Apache Trail, just east of Mesa, was built more than 100 years ago serving as a main access way to the Roosevelt Dam construction site. Today, hitting the historic Apache Trail is still one of the most popular day trips for anyone visiting the Valley. As you pass the mysterious Superstition Mountains and head into the foothills of the Tonto National Forest – the fifth-largest forest in the United States, the area continues to pay homage to its Western roots which took shape in the late 1800s.

Before You Go Before heading out to explore the vast Sonoran Desert, take caution. While the desert offers breathtaking scenery, it can also be unfamiliar territory for out-oftown guests not acclimated to the varied temperatures and rugged terrain. Below is a list of tips before you go. Always pack water. Avoid dehydration by drinking water often throughout your hike. A good rule of thumb is to pack one gallon of water per person for a full-day of desert exploring. Dress appropriately. Desert temperatures can hit extreme highs and extreme lows in a 24-hour period. Wearing layers helps slow dehydration and limits your sun exposure. Always wear closed-toe shoes. Wearing a hat and sunglasses are also recommended. Hike with a friend or in a group. If heading out solo, let someone else know of your plans or alert the ranger where you plan to hike. Never stray from the designated trail. Desert terrain is rugged and unpredictable. Most parks offer maps and marked guides along the trail. Wilderness areas (Superstition and Four Peaks) do not have marked guides along the trail.

Be alert! The desert is full of critters that will attack if approached. Watch for rattlesnakes, Gila monsters and scorpions to name a few. If necessary, make noise so critters know of your presence. Be mindful of their surroundings and treat them with caution and respect.

WATCH FOR CACTUS. It is very common to pick up cactus needles during your hike. Pack a fine-tooth plastic comb for removing the needles – never use your fingers!
Apply sunscreen often. Even in the winter months, Arizona’s direct sunlight can cause severe burns.
Use trail etiquette at all times. Runners and hikers yield to equestrians. Bicyclists should yield to everyone. Downhill
In an emergency, call 9-1-1. Most parks are equipped to alert services and promptly execute a desert rescue.
Pack out what you pack in. Expert guides are available to lead hikes throughout all parks in Mesa. There are some outfitter guides under special use permit to guide in wilderness areas.
Strewn throughout Mesa are attractions and activities that appeal to visitors of all ages. From the lively and exciting Amazing Jakes Food & Fun and the magical holiday lights at the Mesa Arizona Temple Visitors’ Center to the vibrant and fragrant 10,000+ bush Rose Garden at Mesa Community College, there are plenty of one-ofa-kind offerings. Mesa’s neighboring cities also boast an assortment of unique Arizona experiences including SEA LIFE Aquarium in Tempe, the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, and the idyllic Tuscan-inspired setting of the Queen Creek Olive Mill. Further east are the many attractions that line the famous Apache Trail, where the West is still alive and kicking promising to take visitors back in time to Arizona’s glory days. A visit to Rockin’ R Ranch will have you taking in gunfights and gold panning and munching down on

their famous hot Dutch oven biscuits. At Goldfield Ghost Town, guests can go underground into the historic Mammoth Gold Mine. For history buffs, be sure to visit Superstition Mountain Museum and discover the legacy of Jacob Waltz and his legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine. For the First Time: Visitors Can Explore Mesa Grande Cultural Park Mesa’s newest attraction for visitors is actually the city’s oldest – 700 years old as a matter of fact! Opening to the Mesa Grande Cultural Park public on a regular basis for the first time is Mesa Grande Ruins Cultural Park. This ancient Hohokam mound has been under the care of the city of Mesa for nearly 30 years. With a grand opening slated for Feb. 11, 2012, visitors will now be able to walk the interpretive trail on Fridays and Saturdays (Feb. 11 – May 15, 2012) from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The archaeological staff of the Arizona Museum of Natural History has helped preserve and develop the site, which is estimated to date to A.D 1100-1450. The Hohokam built a civilization that lasted 1,500 years in the Salt River Valley. Mesa Grande, located at Date and Brown Road, is one of only two remaining Hohokam mounds in the metro Phoenix area. The ruins temple mound is larger than a football field in both length and width and 27 feet tall at its highest point and remains intact with very few excavations that have impacted its integrity. Mesa Grande is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is designated an official Arizona 2012 Centennial Legacy Project. On the second Friday of each month, Downtown Mesa merchants host the free event, 2nd Friday Night Out, encouraging residents and visitors alike to stroll Main Street. Every March thousands of people break for the spring and catch baseball fever as the Chicago Cubs settle in at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. Today, the Cactus League’s 15 teams provide fans with the ultimate in baseball action across Arizona. Modern day spring training began here in 1947 when Bill Veeck brought his Cleveland Indians to Tucson and Horace Stoneham came to Phoenix with the New York Giants. In 1951 Arizona baseball fans got a good look at the New York Yankees with future Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and rookie Mickey Mantle who trained in Phoenix. A year later spring training got an additional boost when civic and government leaders convinced more Major League teams to train here. In 1952, Dwight Patterson and members of the newly formed Mesa Hohokams led negotiations as the Chicago Cubs and the City of Mesa signed a multi-year agreement. Other teams soon followed with the Cactus League now serving 15 teams in Arizona.
CACTUS LEAGUE COUNTRY Baseball fans can now get their hands on Cactus League history, part of a new pictorial book by Arcadia Publishing available in February 2012. Written and compiled by Susie Steckner, this chronological account of spring training history covers everything from the early days of professional baseball in Arizona and the beginnings of the Cactus League to the social scene with highlights on some of the sports’ most famous players.
