What’s in a Name?
Mesa takes its name from the Spanish word meaning “table”, a term used to reference land above the bluff. The first known settlement in the Mesa area was about 2,000 years ago by an Indian civilization now called the Hohokam (meaning those who are gone). Long-term residents did not arrive until 1877 as Mormon pioneers settled just below the “mesa” next to the Salt River. In 1878 a second group of pioneers arrived settling upon the “mesa”. The pioneers excavated the ancient Hohokam canals, again bringing irrigation and ensuring the rebirth of a community.
Metro Light Rail is available at Sycamore Station, on Main Street just east of Dobson Road. A variety of fare options are available including All Day, 3-, 7-, and 31-Day Passes. Transit fare can be purchased from Fare Vending Machines at all METRO light rail stations and select off-site locations. METRO Light Rail and Valley Metro share the same fare system. Lights, Camera, Action! When Guy Fieri comes to town, watch out. For Joe’s Farm Grill (Gilbert), hosting Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins & Dives” cast a national spotlight on this original homesteadturned-burger stand. Here, they do common food uncommonly well with the neighboring family farm, Agritopia, supplying quality ingredients throughout the year. Guy Fieri featured the farm and showcased how the restaurant can harvest produce the same day they cook it. Adding to the unique dining experience is the quaint setting where 100-year-old trees still stand and offer shade at the dozen picnic tables surrounding the property. Discovery Channel’s popular show “Dirty Jobs” got a real treat when they featured Queen Creek Olive Mill on the program. Host Mike Rowe handled ca-ca (a term for the leftover olive pit grinds from the press process) and managed to get really dirty helping harvest Arizona’s only family-owned and operated working olive mill. In Queen Creek, a burgeoning community southeast of Mesa, a variety of Italian, Spanish and Greek olives are grown and pressed for the production of high quality extra virgin olive oil. Visitors to the mill can take a tour of the olive oil production and pressing process followed by complimentary tasting of the more than a dozen types of oils produced by the mill. Come hungry, as tucked inside is del Piero – the mill’s Tuscan-inspired eatery featuring fresh gourmet sandwiches, panini’s, as well as soups, salads, gelato and espresso. Here, dining al fresco is encouraged in the mill’s Tuscany-inspired olive tree grove. North of Mesa is the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, a 950-member Native American tribe which calls Central Arizona’s upper Sonoran Desert home. The Fort McDowell Yavapai, the “Abaja – the people” are one of three Yavapai tribes in Arizona. The Yavapai are among the Yuman-speaking peoples, which also include the Hualapai, Havasupai, Kumeyaay, Pai Pai, Cocopah and other Southwestern tribes. Right in the heart of the Southeast Valley, Gilbert is one of the fastest growing communities in the nation yet still considered one of Arizona’s “small towns.” Most recently, Gilbert was touted by Money magazine as a “Best Place to Live” in the 2010 ranking of U.S. cities. Take A Claycation And More At Arizona’s Largest Art & Entertainment Venue In Mesa Recognized by AARP as a fresh alternative to the ordinary vacation, the state-of-the-art 8,000-square-foot ceramics studio at Mesa Arts Center is offering a variety of classes and workshops taught by talented instructors and nationally known artists. Called claycations, the workshops are tailored to all skill levels and offer a great introduction into the art for guests that have never touched clay. The popular claycation course will teach functional pottery and basic ceramic sculpture. Instructors utilize demonstrations, examples of contemporary and historical ceramics, as well as engage students in lively discussions of art to encourage the new artists to discover and develop their own ideas. Mesa Arts Center secures nationally
and internationally known ceramic artists for the claycation courses ensuring each experience is unique and different for guests interested in participating in more than one series. Mesa Arts Center’s ceramics studio is equipped with 14 kilns, including a 100 cubic foot car kiln, eight electric kilns, a soda kiln, raku and a wood kiln. There are 30 wheels, three slab rollers, an extruder, two clay mixers, a pug mill and student lockers. With plenty of work areas available, the studio accommodates as many as 40 students. The Mesa Arts Center is also offering a more condensed version of the courses through their Date Night series, where couples can spend a few hours enjoying each other while being engaged in the arts.
In addition, the arts center’s renowned instructors will be hosting a series of miniarts vacation courses teaching fledgling artists the tricks of the trade. From glass blowing and blacksmithing to running a printing press, numerous weekend, hourly and multiple-day classes are being scheduled specifically with visitors in mind. Seek Out Second Fridays! TGI-Free! On the second Friday of each month, Downtown Mesa merchants host the free event, Second Fridays, encouraging residents and visitors alike to stroll Main Street. Chicago cubs Spring training Every March thousands of people break for the spring and catch baseball fever as the Chicago Cubs settle in at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. Today the Cactus League’s 15 teams provide fans with the ultimate in baseball action across Arizona. Modern day spring training began here in 1947 when Bill Veeck brought his Cleveland Indians to Tucson and Horace Stoneham came to Phoenix with the New York Giants. In 1951 Arizona baseball fans got a good look at the New York Yankees with future Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and rookie Mickey Mantle who trained in Phoenix. A year later spring training got an additional boost when civic and government leaders convinced more Major League teams to train here. In 1952, Dwight Patterson and members of the newly formed Mesa Hohokams led negotiations as the Chicago Cubs and the City of Mesa signed a multiyear agreement. Other teams soon followed with the Cactus League now serving 15 teams in Arizona. To this day, loyal Cubs fans in Mesa consistently lead the Cactus League in season attendance and currently hold the all-time Major League Spring Training attendance record.

Tonto National Forest/Lost Dutchman State Park, Granite Reef Recreation Area, Superstition Mountain Range
USDA Forest Service, Tonto National Forest As the fifth largest forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest is one of the mostvisited “urban” forests in the U.S. The Tonto National Forest oversees all the Mesa-area lakes and the Lower Salt and Verde rivers as well as many streams in the area. A Tonto Pass, a daily (24-hour) recreation pass for visitors, is required for more than 50 recreation sites in the Tonto National Forest. The Pass must be displayed on visitor’s vehicle rear-view mirror. The passes sell for $6.00 per vehicle plus a watercraft use fee of $4.00 per watercraft. Passes are available at 200 locations in the Mesa area including nearby convenience stores and also online and by mail. Many of the lakesarea businesses operate under special permit from Tonto National Forest. Play Ball! The Cactus League Experience Ty Cobb once soothed his old spring training aches and pains at the Buckhorn Baths mineral spas in Mesa. Willie Mays was the first to hit a homer at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. And Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played one season of spring training baseball together in Arizona. These are just some of the moments that make up the rich history of Cactus League baseball in Arizona and a few of the tales that are told in the exhibit, Play Ball: The Cactus League Experience. This collection, curated by the Mesa Historical Society, celebrates the long and colorful history of professional baseball in Arizona from the sports barnstorming days before statehood, researched to be as early as 1909, to the inauguration of the Cactus League in 1947 and up to present day. Generations young and old will enjoy the interactive and educational components honoring America’s favorite pastime.

DINNERS DOWN THE ORCHARD Just down the road in Queen Creek, guests can make reservations for an exquisite dining experience at Schnepf Farms, a fourth generation family farm and the largest organic peach grower in Arizona. Schnepf Farms hosts their Dinners Down the Orchard program in the “middle of our peach orchard” on their 300 acre farm. Offered a handful of times a year, each one is hosted by a notable Valley chef and features the culinary bounty of the season. Past chefs have included Iron Chef Beau MacMillan from elements at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, Eddie Matney from Scottsdale’s Eddie’s House restaurant, Executive Chef Todd Sicolo from Arizona Biltmore and Chef Vincent Guerithault of Vincent’s on Camelback. Rittenhouse Road, Queen Creek, 480-987-3100, schnepffarms.com A HISTORY OF CITRUS STILL THRIVES TODAY Arizona was founded on the citrus industry and you can still experience the joys of the harvest at Orange Patch, one of Mesa’s original citrus growers. Here, they have stood the test of time as other orchards across the Metropolitan Phoenix area have closed and been forgotten. Located north of the city, the Orange Patch is 110 acres of citrus and 30 acres of sweet corn and passersby can enjoy the fragrant orange blossoms each spring when temperatures begin to rise. Peak season for orange production is January and February. Guests visiting are welcome to watch the picking and production process with special tours offered for groups. Blossoms are blooming every March and April and you can see folks drive by with windows wide open to take in the pleasant fumes. Each spring, visitors to Cubs Spring Training games flock here out of tradition and a desire to shop the produce stand and take their pick of fresh oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. A TASTE OF ITALY IN THE DESERT Just east of Mesa is the Queen Creek Olive Mill – Arizona’s only family-owned and operated working olive mill and farm where olives are grown and pressed for the production of high quality extra virgin olive oil. While most wouldn’t think of Arizona as a prime location for olive production, unlike most olive growing regions of the world, the state does not have a problem with the olive fly due to the extreme heat during the growing season. Arizona’s climate affords the mill the luxury of not using pesticides. Through experience, Queen Creek Olive Mill’s Master Blender will time the harvest in order to obtain the optimal ripeness of the olive. When prime picking season takes place, their olives are harvested by hand and gentle release methods. Grown at the base of the San Tan Mountains, an area known for its fertile soil, this flood plain region is famous for its high quality fruits

and vegetables. The combination of long sunny days and cool desert nights provide the ideal growing conditions for the trees. After a tour and complimentary tasting of oils, olives and tapenades, guests are invited to dine at del Piero – the mill’s Tuscan-inspired eatery featuring fresh gourmet sandwiches and paninis, as well as soups, salads, gelato and espresso. At Superstition Farms in east Mesa, guests can enjoy public tours of a fourth generation dairy farm. Run by brother and sister team, Casey and Alison Stechnij, tours are aimed at demonstrating to visitors daily life on a working “agritourist” family farm. In addition to learning about modern dairy operation and how farmers work to be environmentally conscious, guests also discover the dedication taken to the care, comfort, and health of every animal. Also onsite is a petting zoo, Milk Bar featuring a dozen flavors including Butterscotch and Peaches & Cream, and the Mooster’s Moo-tique, a fully stocked boutique featuring toys, novelty items, games, candy, fresh eggs, cheeses, and local jams and honey. Not to be missed is the Udder Delights homemade ice cream. Be sure to call and get their schedule for the Locavore Dinner Series offered each fall and spring during harvest seasons. Defined as one who eats only locally grown or raised food, the locavore dinners feature multiple course meals made completely from products that came from within a 100-mile radius of the farm. All meals feature four courses and are paired with Arizona wines. The locavore concept ensures that every bite and sip comes from an Arizona farmer, rancher, gardener, food producer and wine maker to ultimately celebrate the value, availability and quality of local foods. The saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States and can only be found in the Sonoran Desert. Iconic in its shape due to its many arms, this gentle giant is the symbol of the region and one of many plants in Arizona protected by the Native Plant Protection Act. It can take up to 50 years before the plant blossoms with the beautiful state flower and approximately 75 years before appendages sprout. With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150-200 years old and grow to be between 40-60 feet tall. When fully hydrated they will weigh between 3,200-4,800 pounds.

Even though Mesa is in the heart of a desert, visitors can take advantage of the city’s close proximity to a water recreation paradise – the Tonto National Forest. There are three lakes and two rivers within 30 minutes of Mesa that allow for desert boating, rafting, kayaking and water skiing. Or, partake in the unique activity of “tubing”, a leisurely float along the cool waters of the Salt River via inner-tube. Tours of Canyon Lake to the east with more than 28 miles of cactus-dotted shoreline are also popular. Guests can cruise the lake’s secluded inner waterways with Dolly Steamboat and photograph desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife. To the north, visitors can also hit the water at Saguaro Lake. Campgrounds and Butcher Jones Beach make the area ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Or, take a more scenic route on a Desert Belle paddleboat cruise. Three Ways Short on time but still eager to know all you can about this exotic terrain? Here are a few tips on how to soak up some desert education on a time crunch. • Sign up for an off-road tour. Expert guides take you into nearby areas that are chock full of desert vegetation. Plan for some tall tales, cactus tasting and critter catching! Most tours average 2 hours. • Visit Desert Botanical Garden online (dbg.org) and scour their many digital guides to the desert. Print the version that appeals to you most and head out on a self-guided tour at their unique facility. From wildflower listings to trail illustrations, you can pick and choose before you go! • Pair Hohokam history and desert vegetation into one visit at Park of the Canals. At this newly renovated park, you can enjoy a self-guided walk through the Brinton Botanical Garden and read up on clearly identified vegetation while exploring the remnants of an ancient Hohokam canal. The park is conveniently located near downtown Mesa so access is easy.

Each spring, wildflowers pave Mesa’s nearby hiking trails and the desert overflows with hues of red, purple, orange, yellow and blue – all accompanied by the vibrant green shades of Arizona’s indigenous desert flora. Wildflower season varies each year and is dependent on fall and winter rainfall amounts. Blooms are usually at their peak in midMarch but can start as early as February. As a reminder, picking wildflowers is illegal and can have harmful effects on the desert eco-system. The Legendary Apache Trail Recognized by the Arizona Office of Tourism as one of the most scenic byways in the state, the historic Apache Trail, just east of Mesa, was built more than 100 years ago serving as a main access way to the Roosevelt Dam construction site. Today, hitting the historic Apache Trail is still one of the most popular day trips for anyone visiting the Valley. Birding is a popular sport in Arizona, whose diverse terrain offers a spectacular playground for more than 350 species. Before You Go Before heading out to explore the vast Sonoran Desert, take caution. While the desert offers breathtaking scenery, it can also be unfamiliar territory for out-of-town guests not acclimated to the varied temperatures and rugged terrain. Below is a list of tips before you go. Always pack water. Avoid dehydration by drinking water often throughout your hike. A good rule of thumb is to pack one gallon of water per person for a full-day of desert exploring. Dress appropriately. Desert temperatures can hit extreme highs and extreme lows in a 24-hour period. Wearing layers helps slow dehydration and limits your sun exposure. Always wear closed-toe shoes. Wearing a hat and sunglasses are also recommended. Hike with a friend or in a group. If heading out solo, let someone else know of your plans or alert the ranger where you plan to hike. Never stray from the designated trail. Desert terrain is rugged and unpredictable. Most parks offer maps and marked guides along the trail. Wilderness areas (Superstition and Four Peaks) do not have marked guides along the trail.

Be alert! The desert is full of critters that will attack if approached. Watch for rattlesnakes, Gila monsters and scorpions to name a few. If necessary, make noise so critters know of your presence. Be mindful of their surroundings and treat them with caution and respect. WATCH FOR CACTUS. It is very common to pick up cactus needles during your hike. Pack a fine-tooth plastic comb for removing the needles – never use your fingers! Use trail etiquette at all times. Runners and hikers yield to equestrians. Bicyclists should yield to everyone. Downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic. When in doubt, give other users the right of way. Pack out what you pack in. Expert guides are available to lead hikes throughout all parks in Mesa. There are some outfitter guides under special use permit to guide in wilderness areas. Apply sunscreen often. Even in the winter months, Arizona’s direct sunlight can cause severe burns. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. Most parks are equipped to alert services and promptly execute a desert rescue.
