Mesa started out as a small farming community settled by Mormon pioneers in the late 1800s. Little did they know that Mesa’s original town site, a one-squaremile of land in the heart of downtown, would grow to represent a $2 billion district when you combine annual retail sales with property investment values and services. Here the once dirt streets which were wide enough to enable horse and buggies to turn around are aligned with one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants and museums. Today, Downtown Mesa supports nearly 500 businesses and the surrounding demographic mirrors that of San Antonio’s famous tourist attraction, the Riverwalk.
Like the visionary leaders of the past, Mesa’s leaders of today made history when they built Mesa Arts Center, the largest arts facility of its kind in the Southwest U.S. and the only center offering comprehensive professional performing arts, visual arts and arts education. Completed in 2005, the $95 million, seven-acre campus includes four theaters, five exhibition galleries and 14 visual and performing arts studios and classrooms. The architectural masterpiece and central gathering place was inspired by and reflects the unique character of Arizona’s famous landscapes, a rich mountain, desert and canyon environment. With such recent developments helping further pave the way for tourism,

On the Horizon: U p & Com i n g At t r ac t i ons in Mesa The Valley’s next urban hot spot will soon boast several new tourism destinations with many more on the horizon. Be sure to check out these latest offerings in Mesa during your stay: Mesa Riverview is adding a four-story, 150-room Hyatt Place hotel. The property will complement the 250-acre development and is expected to open in spring 2009. Hyatt Place properties feature guest rooms that are 25 percent larger than typical hotel rooms, walk-in showers, granite counters, wet bars, 42-inch high-definition televisions, sofa-sleepers and high-speed Internet access. Country music superstar Toby Keith’s restaurant, I Love This Bar & Grill, is also coming to Mesa Riverview. This 600-seat restaurant will be the first to open in the state and only the fourth location to open nationwide. Expected to open this winter, the restaurant will showcase an 80-foot guitar bar and feature live concerts, dancing, drinks and a full menu of good ol’ American favorites. Dana Park Village Square has added more dining options to its already impressive collection of high-end retailers and unique boutiques. Ra Sushi Bar and New American bistro Bar Tepo recently opened to rave reviews. Mesa’s upscale shopping center is also embarking on completing its third phase of development which will bring in Z Gallerie, Anthropologie, Recess Kids Club and Philosophy Cosmetics. World-renowned performers, The Duttons, make Mesa a permanent stop on their tour next year with the opening of The Dutton Family Theater in January. The theater, located in East Mesa, will allow patrons to come early and combine the evening’s performance

with dinner. Recognized as one of the top 10 acts on NBC’s hit show America’s Got Talent, and voted Branson’s Best Musical Variety Show, performances in the new theater are scheduled through March. After two years of construction, the newly completed Children’s Garden at Boyce Thompson Arboretum offers kids a full-sensory desert experience. The garden features four interactive stations focusing on touch, texture, color, sound and scent as well as a human sundial and maze. Each interactive area allows children to strengthen their senses and learn about the state’s incredible flora and fauna.

Most recently, the expansion of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has helped the city serve as a dynamic reliever destination to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. Providing a convenient alternative for passengers flying in and out of metro Phoenix, the airport serves as a gateway to several East Valley communities including Gilbert, Gila River Indian Community, Queen Creek and neighboring Apache Junction. S e cr e ts of the Son or a n D e se rt • The Sonoran Desert is located in two states, Arizona and California, and two countries, Mexico and the United States. • The Sonoran Desert boasts the richest diversity of plants and animals of all the world’s deserts – well over 3,000 different plant species. This diversity provides habitat for more than 500 species of birds, as well as more than 550 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. • More rain falls on the Sonoran Desert than any other desert. • The saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States and can only be found in the Sonoran Desert. It takes 50 years before the plant blossoms with the beautiful state flower of Arizona and approximately 75 years before appendages (arms) sprout. • With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150-200 years old. They can grow to be between 40-60 feet tall and when fully hydrated weigh between 3,200-4,800 pounds. Did you know? The first known settlement in the Mesa area was about 2,000 years ago. An Indian civilization now called the Hohokam (meaning those who are gone), built an empire that lasted 1,500 years. The agriculturally-oriented Hohokam engineered hundreds of miles of irrigation canals, cultivating thousands of acres of land. Many of those same canal routes are used today throughout metropolitan Phoenix.

Although only incorporated in 1978, Apache Junction has a long and colorful past reaching back to every element of the American Southwest: ancient Indian cultures, Spanish explorers, the lure of rich gold mines, and open range for the western cattlemen. Add in the local legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine and the deadly hide & seek between the U.S. Military and the indigenous Apache bands, and you have a place that vibrates with history. Within the shadow of the Superstition Mountains and just east of Mesa lies Apache Junction - the trailhead to adventure along the Historic Apache Trail (Hwy. 88). Considered by many as one of the most scenic drives in all the Southwest, Apache Trail takes visitors through canyons of dizzying heights, azure blue lakes, Goldfield Ghost Town and the old stagecoach station of Tortilla Flat before reaching the majestic Roosevelt Dam. recreation and leisure activities are everywhere along the way. There is fishing, skiing and boating on Canyon and Apache Lakes as well as hiking and trail rides through the Lost Dutchman State Park or on the Peralta Trailhead. No one can overlook the splendors of the unincorporated village of Gold Canyon next door. Once a working cattle ranch bordering the Superstition Wilderness, it is now best known for the world famous Gold Canyon Golf Resort, luxury spas, fine restaurants, lush accommodations and premier golf. Right in the heart of the Southeast Valley, Gilbert is one of the fastest growing communities in the nation yet still considered one of Arizona’s “small towns.” You don’t have to go far in Gilbert to find friendly people and fun things to do. Located in the heart of the retail corridor of Gilbert is SanTan Village, a new power center offering more than 90 specialty retailers, restaurants and amenities to create a vibrant, livework-shop experience. At the Gilbert Riparian Preserve, visitors can stroll more than four miles of walking trails, take in birdwatching and fish at the recreation lake. The preserve, designed to utilize recycled water to create a community wetland wildlife sanctuary, also offers programs and classes to the public, including nature walks and events at the new observatory.
Gilbert’s Heritage District marks the original town site and boasts an eclectic array of restaurants and shops. A stop at Joe’s BBQ is a favorite among locals as is catching a show at the Hale Centre Theatre. Located in the southeast corner of Maricopa County, Queen Creek is a beautiful, family-friendly community offering the comforts of the country with the convenience of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is located just a few miles west of Mesa and is served by more than 20 airlines. There are three passenger terminals, car rental facilities, shops, restaurants, services and ground transportation. Most airlines offer direct flights from major U.S. cities. ith the opening of Mesa Arts Center in 2005, the arts and cultural scene in Mesa exploded. Recognized as the largest and most comprehensive arts center in the Southwest, Mesa Arts Center is an architectural masterpiece and central gathering place showcasing a world of arts and culture. The seven-acre campus features a complex of four theaters that host world-class performances, Broadway shows, and popular music acts year-round. In addition, visitors can view art exhibitions at Mesa Contemporary Arts, a five-gallery visual arts complex offering free admission on Thursdays. Making up the center is a 700-foot shaded outdoor plaza locals affectionately call the Shadow Walk and 14 visual and performing arts studios and classrooms offering art education and instruction. Be sure to call ahead and reserve a spot for their free campus tours held each Wednesday. Just down the street in downtown Mesa is the Arizona Museum of Natural History, one of the state’s premier natural history museums dedicated to paleontology with a special emphasis on promoting the natural and cultural history of Arizona. The museum hosts the state’s largest collection of dinosaurs and has federal status as a collections repository for fossils. One of the most frequented attractions is Dinosaur Mountain and Hall with a spectacular three-story diorama showcasing the types of dinosaurs that inhabited the state over geologic time. At the Arizona Museum for Youth, young crawlers and curious toddlers can get creative in ArtVille, an art-inspired town. Adults too, can take in the many galleries that host visually stimulating exhibitions on various themes that engage, entertain and educate. The Commemorative Air Force – Arizona Wing showcases a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States in World War II. Also on display are artifacts and memorabilia from the War Years to the Home Front – many of which were donated to the Arizona Wing by veterans and their families. Visitors can even take a warbird flight on the B-17 Sentimental Journey and other select aircraft. And, visitors wanting to know more about Mesa’s deep roots can visit the Mesa Historical Museum. The museum has an outstanding collection of artifacts as well as a replica of an early Adobe one-room school house and a large collection of historic agricultural equipment. This January, the historical museum will host Play Ball! The Cactus League Experience, celebrating baseball and spring training in Arizona.

From the lively and exciting Amazing Jakes Indoor Fun Factory to the charming countryside setting of the Queen Creek Olive Mill, whatever it is you crave you’re bound to find it in Mesa. Here, the West is still alive and kicking with several attractions promising to take visitors back in time to Arizona’s glory days. A visit to Rockin’ R Ranch will have you taking in gunfights and gold panning and munching down on their famous hot Dutch oven biscuits. At Goldfield Ghost Town, guests can go underground into the historic Mammoth Gold Mine or take a ride on Arizona’s only narrow gauge train. For history buffs, be sure to visit Superstition Mountain Museum and discover the legacy of Jacob Waltz and his legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine. While there, stop by the Elvis Presley Chapel featuring a movie memorabilia museum showcasing Western motion pictures and television shows that were filmed at Apacheland Movie Ranch. Spending an afternoon in downtown Mesa? Be sure to include a stop at the Mesa Temple, a historic landmark featuring meticulously manicured grounds, a cactus garden and large reflection pools. Holidays are special here. In December, more than 600,000 Christmas lights are displayed and every Easter they host the largest annual Easter Pageant in the world. Every March thousands of people break for the spring and catch baseball fever as the Chicago Cubs settle in at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. Today the Cactus League’s 13 teams provide fans with the ultimate in baseball action across Arizona. Modern day spring training began here in 1947 when Bill Veeck brought his Cleveland Indians to Tucson and Horace Stoneham came to Phoenix with the New York Giants. In 1951 Arizona baseball fans got a good look at the New York Yankees with future Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and rookie Mickey Mantle who trained in Phoenix. A year later spring training got an additional boost when civic and government leaders convinced more Major League teams to train here. In 1952, Dwight Patterson and members of the newly formed Mesa HoHoKams led negotiations as the Chicago Cubs and the City of Mesa signed a multi-year agreement. Other teams soon followed with the Cactus League now serving 13 teams in Arizona and more on the horizon. To this day, loyal Cubs fans in Mesa consistently lead the Cactus League in season attendance and currently hold the all-time Major League Spring Training attendance record.
