Grab the binoculars! The Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Water Ranch offers guests a chance to explore a natural Arizona wetland. Nearly 200 species of birds have been identified at this 110-acre wildlife sanctuary for recreation, research and education. The preserve features five miles of trail, an observatory, the ethno botanical garden and even welcomes overnight campers. Family travelers will appreciate the Little Nature Explorer programs focused on learning and outdoor exploration. After the sun sets, enjoy the monthly astronomy nights hosted by the East Valley Astronomy Club. Call ahead for events and schedule of programs and classes offered for visitors.
OLIVES & OILS, OH MY! Just east of Mesa is the Queen Creek Olive
Mill, Arizona’s only family-owned and operated working olive mill and farm, where olives are grown and pressed for the production of high quality extra virgin olive oil. Grown at the base of the San Tan Mountains, an area known for its fertile soil, this flood plain region is famous for its high quality fruits and vegetables. The combination of long sunny days and cool desert nights provide the ideal growing conditions for the olive trees. After a tour and complimentary tasting of oils, olives and tapenades, guests are invited to dine at del Piero – the mill’s Tuscan-inspired eatery featuring fresh gourmet sandwiches, as well as soups, salads, gelato and espresso. Cool off or warm up with iced coffees or hot lattes at the local coffee roaster, Superstition Coffee, brewing up the good stuff inside the mill. In addition to indulging on olive-oil cupcakes, continue the pampering at Olive Spa with all natural, olive-oil products for bath, body and the home.
Dinners Down the Orchard In the charming town of Queen Creek, guests can make reservations for an exquisite dining experience at Schnepf Farms, a fourth generation family farm and the largest organic peach grower in Arizona. Schnepf Farms hosts their Dinners Down the Orchard program in the middle of their 300 acre farm. Offered a handful of times a year, each one is hosted by a notable Valley chef and features the culinary bounty of the season. In the spring, guests are surrounded by the fragrant peach blossoms creating a setting straight out of storybooks. Come May, the farm’s 5,000 peach trees bear some of the juiciest peaches you can sink your teeth into. fort mcdowell adventures: Native Neighbors Set on 25,000 acres of spectacular open desert, there’s serious western spirit whistling through the sagebrush at Fort McDowell Adventures. SWING! Don’t miss out on a whole new way to play golf at Arizona’s
newest entertainment venue, Topgolf Gilbert. Topgolf has taken the golf industry by storm, elevating the sport by merging target ‘dart-like’ golf with lively bars and entertainment. Wild, Wild, West: Ghost Towns and Tall Tales There is simply no shortage of Wild West fun and entertainment at Goldfield Ghost Town located along the historic (and stunning!) Apache Trail, just east of Mesa. To this day, the area continues to pay homage to its Western roots which took shape in the late 1800s. The town is lined with retail shops and you won’t want to miss taking home some of the signature prickly pear fudge at the Mother Lode Mercantile. Those with a hard to please sweet tooth will want to try the Gold Nugget fudge with layers of gooey caramel and topped with 23.5 K gold sprinkles. The newest thrill ride for visitors is the Gravity Tram operated by Superstition Zipline. Visitors can now soar 120 feet above the ground and capture incredible views of the Superstition Mountain range and lush desert floor. For those who prefer to stay grounded, hop aboard an Apache Trail Jeep Tour for adventure on four wheels and head out for the popular Fish Creek Hill, a one lane unpaved trail of switchbacks offering an adrenaline rush that has guests hugging the mountain. Of course, one of the best perspectives of this ancient desert landscape is from atop a horse. Seasonal trail rides into the lush desert brush are provided by the OK Corral at the Goldfield Livery and the path takes riders just beyond the footprint of the town and along a forest of tall Saguaros. HEADING TO THE TRAIL: To access the Apache Trail from Mesa, head east on Main Street or east along the U.S. 60 to the Idaho Road exit. Off Idaho Road, follow signs toward Highway 88. The trail will weave you past three lakes – Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt. Paved road ends just beyond Tortilla Flat. Take caution while driving, the trail features numerous switchbacks throughout the entire route that connects Mesa to Globe. visitmesa.com
Where Time Stands Still The Grand Canyon is Arizona’s most spectacular natural site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. ARIZONA OASIS: WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE Here, both “chills and thrills” are in store while cruising along on the refreshing mountain-stream waters that surround Mesa. Grab a board and head to the lakefront beach for a glide along the crystal Saguaro Lake waters, where stand-up paddle boarders can be found basking in the canyon-walled beauty. This recreational sport offers a great workout for people of all ages and is a great way to see the scenic Arizona Desert. While in many areas the paddle board season is short, in Mesa SUPers go year-round. For a scenic path without the workout, cruise the calm waters of Mesa’s nearest
lakes. The Desert Belle, which tours exclusively at Saguaro Lake, is a 143-passenger two-level vessel that takes guests on a narrated tour filled with history and fun. Cruise in air-conditioned comfort and learn about the geological history found on the lake’s canyon walls and Arizona’s wildlife. Head east to Canyon Lake, along the historic Apache Trail, and hop aboard the Dolly Steamboat. Glide along the cactus-studded shoreline and keep your eyes peeled for desert hawks, coyotes, eagles and bighorn sheep. Be sure to catch an Arizona history lesson while taking in the sights.
Grab Some Air: Desert Trails Park Mesa has created a first of-its-kind bike and trails recreation area, Desert Trails Park. At 35 acres, this new outdoor playground is surrounded by Arizona’s iconic desert landscape and includes a series of hiking and biking trails, a pump track, a kids’ skills track and shaded ramadas.The trails consist of a 3/4-mile perimeter trail for hiking and non-motorized bike use. There are three progressive flow trails for downhill bike use ranging from beginner to expert. The skills track, pump track, and three flow trails are designed to introduce and progressively develop new skills for BMX-style bike riding. The entire park was designed by Norris Design Group & Alpine Bike Parks, with local input from volunteers with the Gravity Riders Organization of Arizona (GROAZ). CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE Mesa, Arizona is neighbor to the Tonto National Forest and visitors to this desert region take advantage of being incredibly close to one of the nation’s largest playgrounds. Tonto is the fifth largest forest in the United States and one of the mostvisited “urban” forests in the country. There are three lakes and two rivers adjacent to Mesa that allow for desert boating, paddle boarding, kayaking and water skiing. These tucked away canyons, raging rivers and expansive lakes are all surrounded by breathtaking mountain ranges. Mesa has miles of shoreline and miles of trails that set the stage for back-country wilderness trips with expert outfitters serving as guides. Visitors can choose their own adventure such as paragliding in our parks, climbing up the cliff faces of the Superstition Mountains, or hiking to the Wind Cave set high atop Usery Mountain. Or, take to the skies in a hot-air balloon and float over some of the most manicured farmlands surrounding Queen Creek – including a 300-acre peach orchard and rows and rows of olive trees. Passengers will enjoy 360-degree views of the San Tan Mountain range and the legendary Superstition Mountains.

DESERT DELIGHTS When visiting Mesa, visitors are always coaxed south to experience the burgeoning dining and nightlife scene buzzing in neighboring Gilbert. Already recognized for being the state’s fastest growing community (nearly doubling in size over the last decade) and one of the largest ‘towns’ in the country, Gilbert’s allure is in its downtown area. Visitors here have quickly fallen in love with neighborhood hangout Postino East WineCafé and the adjacent Joyride Taco House, and lines still wrap around the town’s main street outside Joe’s Real BBQ. The newest enclave to secure a coveted Downtown Gilbert address is Heritage Marketplace. This high-end development has been designed for the pedestrian with pocket parks throughout. Here, dining al fresco is the norm with large glass window garage doors replacing the traditional front entry at most eateries. Arizona restaurateur Sam Fox is first on this foodie

A variety of flavor-focused burgers take center stage on the menu and can be paired with a dozen milkshake concoctions. Visitors love to support the locals and a stop at the famed Mesa Farmers Market (Fridays, 9AM – 1PM) and the Gilbert Farmers Market (Saturdays, 8AM – 12PM) will unveil an assortment of products from Arizona’s top purveyors. Held every week all year long, the markets are a great way to collect locally-grown produce for your stay and shop for unique gifts. In Mesa, you’ll be steps away from Downtown Mesa for an early breakfast or mid-day lunch at one of the many sidewalk cafes. While in Gilbert, take advantage of their food trucks that are present at each event or opt to dine at their popular joints all within walking distance. For a true marketplace experience, head to the Mesa Market Place and Swap Meet. Each winter visitors head here to collect an assortment of reasonably priced goods that you simply can’t find anywhere else. The covered market boasts 1,600 booths covering 55 acres with vendors offering a variety of gifts and products, including locally-made foods and crafts. Standouts include jewelry, handbags, fashions and everything for the home. Live entertainment and dining round out the experience. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
WHAT’S BREWING: LOCAL BEER SCENE GETS NATIONAL PRAISE Arizona Brewery Tours has become the easiest and most popular way for visitors to experience Arizona craft breweries. Whether you are on vacation, at a conference, or a long time Arizonan with a craving to experience new beer, a HOP-ON Arizona Brewery Tour is a great way to discover the local scene. In Mesa, don’t miss Arizona Wilderness Brewery – rated best beer in the world in 2013 and featured in Esquire. New to the mix is Mesa’s own brew pub, Beer Research Institute. B.R.I. has a heavy focus on craft beer featuring Belgian-style ales with a more fruity flavorful taste and West Coast Americanstyle, which tend to be hop forward and aggressive. Shopping...SOUTHWEST STYLE! It’s no surprise that shopping ranks as one of the most popular activities on anyone’s itinerary when traveling. In Mesa there is no shortage of shopping opportunities with the many retail centers strewn throughout the city. More than 150 stores and eateries make up the popular Superstition Springs Center. The outdoor amphitheater hosts a free summer concert series as well as other Mesa events throughout the year. The Town of Gilbert is home to SanTan Village – the largest outdoor retail mall in the Gateway region. Outdoor districts are strategically placed with stores clustered together making power shopping a cinch! Standouts include Charming Charlie, Fossil, Disney Store, COACH and the Apple Store to name a few. TRADITION MATTERS HERE Every March, the Town of Queen Creek hosts their annual Roots N’ Boots festival (March 6 – 8). This signature
event will again celebrate Arizona history, culture, and the rural heritage of this blossoming community. Activities planned include barrel races, carnival, rodeo dance, an expo, petting zoo, the always fun Mutton Bustin’ ride for younger cowpokes, and live entertainment all day and night. On Sunday, the event hosts the Arizona Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association who put on a show you won’t forget.

Located on the Valley’s east side, Usery Mountain Regional Park takes in 3,648 acres set at the western end of the Goldfield Mountains, adjacent to the Tonto National Forest. The park contains a large variety of plants and animals that call the lower Sonoran Desert home. Along the most popular feature of the park, the Wind Cave Trail, water seeps from the roof of the alcove to support hanging gardens of Rock Daisy. The Wind Cave is formed at the boundary between the volcanic tuff and granite on Pass Mountain. Breathtaking views from this 2,840-foot elevation are offered to all visitors. Add a bucket-list hike to your agenda and head for the Flat Iron at Lost Dutchman State Park. This vertical ascension is for experienced hikers ready to spend a day in the Superstition Wildnerness. After a desert rain, natural waterfalls appear. Sunset hikers will appreciate the expansive views of Greater Phoenix from the vantage points along the Siphon Draw Trail.
Green Thumbs: Gardens In Mesa Visit one of the largest public rose gardens in the Southwest on the campus of Mesa Community College. The Rose Garden boasts 10,000 rose bushes and is a testing site for All-America Rose Selections and the American Rose Society. The Rose Garden has become a popular destination for many students, local residents and visitors. This living botanical laboratory offers up an ideal place to study and seek respite while on vacation. Visit the Mesa Urban Garden, the first city-sponsored urban garden project started as part of a residential initiative. Here, locals maintain plots and grow produce for local food banks and the surrounding neighborhood. Nestled in downtown Mesa, the garden features large full-scale, vibrant murals adding to the ecletic feel of the area.
Mesa Grande Cultural Park Mesa’s oldest attraction is Mesa Grande Cultural Park – 700 years old as a matter of fact! Open to the public, this ancient Hohokam mound has been under the care of the City of Mesa for more than 30 years. Visitors are able to walk the interpretive trail from October to May. The archaeological staff of the Arizona Museum of Natural History have helped preserve and develop the site, which is estimated to date to A.D 1100-1450. The Hohokam built a civilization that lasted 1,500 years in the Salt River Valley. Mesa Grande is one of only two remaining Hohokam mounds in the metro Phoenix area. The ruins temple mound is larger than a football field in both length and width and is 27 feet tall at its highest point. Today, the site remains intact with very few excavations that have impacted its integrity. Mesa Grande is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project. visitmesa.com

At the Arizona Museum of Natural History families can venture through Dinosaur Hall to see some of the biggest creatures that ever walked the Earth. Not to be missed is the three-story waterfall that simulates a flash flood in the desert complete with lightning! Step outside into the Historic courtyard and pan for gold and take in the tall tales about the legend of the Lost Dutchman Jacob Waltz. Other interactive exhibits include the Paleo Dig Pit and Exploration Station, centered on creative minds doing creative activities.

The City of Mesa opened the newest and largest Major League Baseball spring training stadium last year, Cubs Park. Every March, fans from all over the country flock to Mesa to watch their beloved Chicago Cubs warm up for summer. On average, Cubs Park hosts 14,500+ fans per game and broke numerous attendance records earning the label as the ‘most watched team in the Cactus League’. Many iconic features from Chicago were added to the stadium to mirror Wrigley Field, even its culinary experience. Within the stadium, fans can walk around to local food trucks, picnic tables and find Chicago-style hotdogs and deep dish pizza at every turn. Adjacent to Cubs Park is the popular Riverview Park, an $8 million city park that has visitors talking. In 2015, Mesa’s Hohokam Stadium will welcome back the Oakland Athletics. Fitch Park, which will serve as the year-round home for Oakland Athletics Minor League Training and Player Development Operations, will expand the size of the training facility by more than 25,000 square feet. Riverview Park Visitors are raving about the city’s newest play place - Riverview Park. This brand-new, $8 million outdoor park and event venue is one-of-a-kind. Featuring two playgrounds with all the latest hands-on play equipment including slides, spinners and swings that allow for hours of fun time for little ones. On the edge of the park, curious climbers can test their skills and scale a 300 ft. natural linear climbing wall complete with a covered fort. The biggest attraction here is the world’s tallest

ARRIVING IN LATE 2015: VALLEY METRO LIGHT RAIL IS ON THE MOVE TO DOWNTOWN MESA Transit development continues to carve its way through Mesa connecting the city to Tempe, ASU and Central Phoenix. Valley Metro Rail is extending the rail system 3.1 miles into Downtown Mesa with completion expected in late 2015. This project will include four station locations along Main Street. The extra distance will not only have significant impact and growth for Mesa’s downtown but will benefit the many businesses, special events, nearby colleges, and neighborhoods in
the area. Passengers will have access to the boutiques and retail shops that line Main Street, as well as be within walking distance of hotels, restaurants and sidewalk cafes, Mesa Convention Center and the city’s major attractions including Mesa Arts Center, Arizona Museum of Natural History, the i.d.e.a. Museum and more.
