h i s to ry & Heritag e Fountain Hills and the Lake That Never Was Fountain Hills owes its origin to a lake that never came to be. As part of the Central Arizona Project (CAP), construction of Orme Dam, near Granite Reef Dam, would have created a lake at the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation. The lake would have flooded the homes of Fort McDowell residents. The Yavapai and environmentalists defeated the dam proposal. Robert P. McCulloch envisioned a community of 70,000 people similar to one of McCulloch Properties’ other master-planned communities – Lake Havasu City. The development was marketed with a “fly-before-you-buy” sales program, beginning in 1972. Prospective buyers were flown in from Midwestern and Eastern cities to tour the desert ridges in white Jeeps and select their properties. The 560-foot-high “World’s Highest Fountain” was the concept of C.V. Wood, Jr., a planner for McCulloch Properties, Inc., who had worked with Walt Disney on designing Disneyland. It was built to attract attention and buyers. It was turned on for the first time on Dec. 15, 1970, the “birthday” of Fountain Hills. Today, the population is around 24,000, with build-out expected at around 35,000 residents.

Modern Day Fort McDowell The people of Fort McDowell have surmounted many obstacles to return to and keep their land. They have developed several industries. A crisis came in 1992 when the FBI came to confiscate their slot machines. The tribe prevented their removal by barricading exits with large trucks and equipment. Their stand resulted in the passage of Proposition 202 in 2002, assuring that gaming can continue. Since then, the tribe has built the acclaimed We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, the Fort McDowell Radisson Resort, and the Eagle View RV Resort. They are also investing in businesses outside of the reservation, assuring a strong future for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Fountain Hills & Fort McDowell Although the Town of Fountain Hills and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation are only 23 miles northeast of Phoenix, it feels as if they are a world away. The communities are only 30 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport but they are separated from the hustle and traffic of Scottsdale and the metro area by the scenic McDowell Mountains. The area is wreathed by majestic mountains, draped in the unique vegetation of the Sonoran Desert and blessed with panoramic views. The saguaro-studded landscape offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as golfing, hiking, biking, bird watching and boating.

A Celebration of Water in the Desert At its full height of 560 feet, the fountain in the center of Fountain Hills is higher than the Washington Monument. It is 10 feet taller than Notre Dame Cathedral, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt and three times Petroglyphs as high as Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone Park. McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Cactus Flower, Salt River, Fort McDowell Adventures

outdoor Recreation McDowell Mountain Regional Park McDowell Mountain Regional Park has over 50 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails through beautiful desert scenery. This 21,099acre regional park is located four miles north of Fountain Hills. For mountain bikers, the competitive track has three loop tracks; a long loop – 8.2 miles, a sport loop – 3.0 miles, and a technical loop – 2.9 miles. Skills are tested while negotiating steep inclines, swooping turns, technical descents and rugged terrain at race speed. A pump track has been added to the Competitive Track trailhead. This twisting combination of table tops, rollers and banked turns is a great way to improve weight shifting and bike handling skills. Wildlife sightings are common; look for deer, Javelina, coyotes and a multitude of bird species around the three ponds on the park. A couple of trails are less than a mile long; several are one to four miles; and the popular Pemberton Trail is 15.3 miles. Elevations rise from 1,600 feet to 3,000 feet at the base of the McDowell Mountains. The entire park faces the Four Peaks, Weaver’s Needle and Superstition Mountains and provides awesome views. Whether you’re going for a short stroll or looking for a challenge, you’ll enjoy the trails and the vistas. For campers, McDowell Mountain Park has 76 individual sites for tent or RV camping. Each one accommodates Saguaro Lake up to a 45-foot RV. The developed sites have water and electrical hook-ups, picnic tables, barbecue fire rings and a dump station. Restrooms offer flush toilets and showers. A separate area in the park has been set aside for tent campers who don’t need hookups and are seeking a more remote feel to their campsite. 480.471.0173. McDowell Mountain Preserve Thanks to the foresight of local residents, the tops of the McDowell Mountains are preserved for wildlife and future generations to enjoy. Through the work of Sonoran Conservancy volunteers, there are now more than five miles of trails. There are three to five scheduled guided hikes each month. Call 480.312.3111 to schedule a hike. Tonto National Forest Located only minutes away from Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell is Tonto National Forest. With two of Arizona’s largest and most scenic rivers, six lakes, and landscapes ranging from desert to pine forests and high mountain peaks, the forest offers a wide range of recreation opportunities: swimming, boating, hiking, camping, rafting, horseback riding and bird watching, to name a few. Tonto is the fifth-largest National Forest in the United States. With nearly three million acres, there is room enough to roam. Within the forest’s boundaries are eight wilderness areas.

Canyon Lake

Saguaro Lake Saguaro Lake, twenty minutes from Fountain Hills, is one of the loveliest and most popular recreation sites in Tonto National Forest. The golden cliffs and rugged shoreline of Saguaro Lake make a spectacular setting for outdoor activities. One wonderfully relaxing way to enjoy the lake is a narrated tour aboard the Desert Belle Paddlewheel Riverboat. Bald eagles and desert mountain sheep are often spotted in secluded regions. At the Lakeshore Restaurant, diners have splendid views from indoors or outdoors. Boat rentals can be arranged at Precision Marine, which also carries bait, tackle and marine supplies. Boat ramps, fishing pavilions, swimming, picnic tables and restroom facilities are available at two locations. At Butcher Jones Beach, the Shoreline Trail links panoramic vantage points. Horseback riders also have spectacular views of the lake. Horseback riding, kayak and tube rentals are offered at Saguaro Lake Ranch, below the dam. For fishermen, the lake is stocked with plenty of walleye, largemouth and yellow bass, rainbow and brown trout, bluegills, channel catfish and crappie. 602.225.5200.

AREA Landmarks Mount McDowell – Rugged Red Rock a.k.a. Red Mountain, a.k.a. FireRock One of the most prominent landmarks near Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell is the jagged outline of Red Mountain, at 2,830 feet high. Some people see a bearded face in the tallest knob. The deep cleft on its western flank is known as “Gunsight” because of its resemblance to the narrow slot in a fort used for firing at attackers. The mountain is composed of sandstone conglomerate, which gives it a distinctive red color that glows dramatically in the last rays of day. Some call it FireRock. The mountain was officially named Mount McDowell after General Irvin McDowell, who was responsible for the creation of a nearby military post in 1865. It, too, bore his name as Camp McDowell and later Fort McDowell. The mountain is sacred to Indian tribes, including the local Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.

Four Peaks – Purple Mountain Majesty The lyrics “purple mountains’ majesty” could have been written for these peaks. They change with the light from lavender to violet to deep purple. Fittingly, the world’s finest amethyst is found high on its slopes. The wilderness area surrounding the peaks is prime habitat Canyon Lake for black bear and various wildlife. Visible from much of the Phoenix Metro area, this mountain is one of the area’s highest points at 7,657 feet. Visitors and residents of Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell have grandstand seats for the daily spectacle of the sun rising dramatically behind Four Peaks. And when lightning plays about the peaks, it is not hard to imagine the mountain spirits of Yavapai lore. McDowell Mountains – Ancient Roots Some of the oldest rock in Arizona makes up the McDowell Mountain Range to the west of Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell. The range’s highest is McDowell Peak, at 4,034 feet. The rounded mountain to the south is Fire Necklace Mountain, named when a fire burned down its slopes, encircling it. Indians found shelter here, as evidenced by petroglyphs and artifacts. Prospectors sought mineral wealth but discovered only limited amounts of gold, silver and copper. The real wealth of these mountains is their beauty and wildlife. Mazatzal Mountains – “Land of the Deer” North and northeast of the area are the Mazatzal Mountains, some of the most inaccessible country in Arizona. The Mazatzal Wilderness contains over 252,500 acres and extends north to the Mogollon Rim, near Payson. Geologists believe the range was once as high as the present-day Himalaya Mountains. Erosion and mountain-building events created a tortured landscape. Mazatzal is from an old Indian culture in Mexico, and is sometimes pronounced “Mahzahtzahl,” meaning “land of the deer.” Deer still roam there, along with javelina, coyotes, bears and mountain lions. Locals often say “Matt’-uh-zal,” which sounds like “Mad as Hell,” the name of a local ranch – probably given after the owner chased his cows through the wilderness.

The Verde River – Wild and Scenic The Verde is Arizona’s only “Wild and Scenic” river. It was given the designation by Congress in 1984. Canoers, kayakers and fishermen pit themselves against the river’s challenges between Camp Verde and Horseshoe Lake. For much of those 58 miles, the river flows through the Mazatzal Wilderness with level I, II, and III rapids. Shortly after passing through Fort McDowell, the Verde joins the Salt River near Red Mountain.

The Salt River – Nurturing the Valley of the Sun The Salt River was a challenge for early settlers, with either too much or too little water. But, after Roosevelt Dam and four other dams were built, it became a source of both water and power for the Phoenix metro area. Today, it also provides water recreation. Saguaro Lake is the closest of its four scenic lakes. Upstream from it are Canyon Lake, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake.

Art Lovers & Artists Fountain Hills is known as an artistâ€™s community. A collection of 105 pieces of public art can be enjoyed from just about any angle. Sculptures, water features and other works of art adorn the downtown streets, plazas, parks and other public places. Docent-led art walk tours are available the first Saturday of every month from November through April and can also be arranged by special appointment for groups by calling 480.816.5151. An art walk map is also available at kiosks and online for those who wish to conduct their own selfguided tour. No matter where you begin, if you take in all of the artwork, over a day or several days, you will find that you have also taken in different parts of the world. Visitors and residents also delight in the generous amount of artwork with an appeal to children, making it an excellent introduction to art. Even those just beginning to read will see (once they peek over the sculpture momâ€™s shoulder) what book is featured in A Good Book, just outside the library.
