THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS AND THE FORT MCDOWELL YAVAPAI NATION are located 23 miles northeast of Phoenix and just 20 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport. Both communities are naturally separated from Scottsdale and the rest of metro Phoenix by the scenic McDowell Mountains. Originally the site of Arizona’s largest cattle ranch, Fountain Hills is wreathed by majestic mountains and colorful Sonoran Desert terrain. The scenic natural landscape provides for a wide range of outdoor activities that include golfing, hiking, biking, bird watching and boating. The town takes its name from its landmark fountain, one of the world’s tallest, which rises as high as 560 feet from the middle of the lake at Fountain Park in the center of town. The town has become known as an artist’s community. Twice a year The Great Fair and the Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts attract hundreds of thousands of art lovers to the streets of downtown Fountain Hills. Every March, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation hosts the Native American Arts Festival at the Fort McDowell Radisson Resort. Galleries abound and outdoor public art adorns the town throughout. And, the Fountain Hills Community Theater is one of Arizona’s leading performing arts award winners. New developments in Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell are bringing added vibrancy to this resort-caliber destination. The Fountain Hills town center is currently in planning to be transformed into a mixed use destination of entertainment, restaurants, retail, accommodations and events that will even more notably define the community’s smalltown image and allure. And, at the Fort McDowell Nation, a new Radisson Resort opened its doors in January 2006 and a second 18hole course is being added to the renowned We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is one of the country’s strongest proponents of tribal sovereignty. The Fort McDowell Yavapai have endured in the face of adversity to preserve their land, culture and identity. Tribal elders recount that when European settlers came to Arizona, they encountered Apaches and Yavapai. The settlers confused the two communities. The Yavapai described themselves as “A’baja yum,” which to untrained ears sounded like “Apache.” The peaceful Yavapai people were marched from ancestral homelands to the San Carlos Reservation in 1872. The Yavapai fought for and won the right to return home, and in 1903 were granted a 24,000-

acre reservation straddling the Verde River, 35 miles northeast of Phoenix. In 1948, the Arizona Supreme Court determined that the Yavapai had the right to vote. One of the Fort McDowell Nation’s biggest victories came when U.S. and Arizona officials approached the small tribe to construct Orme Dam at the confluence of the Verde and Salt rivers. The reservoir would have flooded tribal land and effectively disbanded the impoverished 425-member community. For 13 years, tribal leadership resisted the effort and in 1981, the government gave up its efforts. Orme Dam Victory Days is now a major tribal holiday. In 1984, Fort McDowell took another step towards self-reliance with a small bingo hall that evolved into a casino by the end of the decade. On May 12, 1992, FBI agents raided the casino and loaded up the slot machines. The community used cars, trucks and other heavy equipment to block access and roadways. After a three-week standoff, the state signed a gaming compact with Fort McDowell. In remembrance of this stand, Sovereignty Day is celebrated by the tribe each May 12. Today, in addition to its casino, the tribe owns and operates the AAA Four Diamond-rated Radisson Fort McDowell Resort, the 36-hole We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Fort McDowell Adventures, an Old West-style outdoor recreational venue, as well as its state-of-theart Eagle View RV resort. Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell offer every key component a top resort community can boast — from spas to gaming, to golf and outdoor adventure, to arts, culture and entertainment, to great shopping and dining, to just plain relaxing amid the greatest of scenic beauty. RECOGNIZED IN THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS as the world’s tallest yearround operating fountain, The Fountain in Fountain Hills shoots a 560-foot-high stream of water 12 times a day, seven days a week, between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. The Fountain is three times as high as Old Faithful and five feet taller than the Washington Monument. The Fountain’s water pressure at the nozzle is 375 pounds per square inch at a rate of 7,000 gallons per minute, or eight tons of water. The Fountain utilizes re-circulated and re-claimed water from the 28-acre lake at its base. On St. Patrick’s Day, the Fountain’s jet stream is turned emerald green. Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts
November 10, 11, 12, 2006, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Held on the Avenue of the Fountains, this three-day juried show with 500 artists attracts an estimated 170,000 visitors and features food booths, musicians, and a beer garden. November 17, 18, 19, 2006, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. Each year the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation commemorates the 960-member tribe’s successful struggle to prevent the construction of a dam which would have flooded the community. Thanksgiving Day Parade
Thursday, November 23, 2006. The only Thanksgiving Day Parade in Arizona, featuring local groups and a grand marshall. A parade theme is chosen each year. Parade starts at 9 a.m. at the corners of Saguaro Blvd. and El Lago Blvd.
Stroll In The Glow
Saturday, Deceember 2, 2006, 6 p.m. Stroll amongst the tethered glow of hot air balloons on Avenue of the Fountains. Over 60,000 lights twinkle on the median. Santa arrives, carolers sing and shops are open for visitors.
Holiday Luminarias
December 22, 23, 24, 2006, Sunset. Three nights before Christmas, luminaries are lit by hundreds of volunteers. Thousands of luminaries line the streets of downtown and the shores of Fountain Lake.

Pony Express Days
February 1, 2007 For 48 years the Navajo County Hashknife Sheriff’s Posse with up to 30 riders participating, recreates the ride of the Pony Express from Holbrook to Scottsdale with stops and celebrations in communities along the way. It all culminates with their participation in Scottsdale’s annual Parada del Sol. On this day, the riders gallop into Fountain Hills and are officially greeted at the Post Office in the early afternoon, followed by a festive free event, featuring music, food and drink at the River of Time Museum and Library grounds.

Rising up from the desert floor on Fountain Hills’ northeastern horizon is the majestic series for Four Peaks Mountain. A Fountain Hills group hikes. landmark, the peaks rise to 7,657 feet, the 480.816.5142 highest in the Valley. With some 40 miles of trails, the wilderness area offers ample hiking opportunities. The area is considered to be one of the most densely populated black bear habitats in Arizona. Other wildlife found here includes coyotes, deer, javelina, ring-tailed cats, skunks and mountain lions. Just north of Fountain Hills, this 21,099-acre park is one of the largest parks in the Maricopa County Park System. With nearly 55 miles of desert trails, the park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Mazatzals
In the north end of the Mazatzal range, an area of predominantly rough desert mountains and narrow vertical-walled canyons, elevations range from 1,600 feet along the Verde River to 7,903 feet on Mazatzal Peak.
Red Mountain
One of the most recognizable land formations in the area is Red Mountain. Also known as “Gunsight Mountain,” and as “Firerock,” Arizona sunsets transform the mountain’s red sandstone into a fiery orange and rust color that can be seen from miles away. Limited hiking is available.
Salt River Recreation
One of the favorite pastimes in the Phoenix area is riding an inner tube down the Verde and Salt rivers just southeast of Fountain Hills. Inner-tube rentals are available for visitors who want to float down the Salt River and enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountains and desert. 480.984.3305
Saguaro Lake
Located off Highway 87 North just outside of Fountain Hills, Saguaro Lake offers many recreational options and is the closest man-made lake to Fountain Hills.
