The Travel Blogger just spent a few days in Chandler, Arizona, and it’s now on the top of my list of best places to work/play for all the road warriors. Whether you’re here on business (as I was) or just need a break from reality, well, Chandler’s the place to be.

Hot Spot Alert: Tech Savvy If you are a regular reader of the Travel Blogger (at last count there were dozens!), you know I like my high-tech toys and that is why I will be back to Chandler early and often. A WI-FI network is under construction and this entire 72-square-mile oasis of opportunity will be connected to the Net well before the sun sets on 2006. The city next door, Tempe (home to Arizona State University), also has the entire WI-FI network in place, making this the largest contiguous network in the country. How cool is that, travel fans? Chandler is also home to a number of high tech companies and three Intel chip plants, keeping the Travel Blogger’s laptop happy, happy, and running at top speed. It allowed me to download the pictures I’ve included with this week’s Blog quicker than you can say “Pentium Power.” n

Chandler is a progressive city, home to over 240,000 residents who really seem to have it together. Located in the southeastern corner of what’s known as the Valley of the Sun (the Phoenix Metro area), it has a character all its own – but it is also conveniently located to virtually all things fun in the state. Being the savvy business traveler that I am, I am delighted with the variety of hotel accommodations available, including Arizona’s original golf resort, the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort that first opened in 1912. It really is a tough choice when it comes to choosing a hotel since Chandler is home to most of the well know hotel chains with many more choices on the way including Marriott’s third Renaissance Club Sport concept hotel (opening in late 2007), a full service Hilton (opening in early 2008) and many more!

Not to forget, that the hotels were also very conveniently located near all of my appointments and the immediate access to the Valley freeways made my business calls easy to navigate! Hot Spot Alert: Golf! Anyway, back to the San Marcos. What a treat. This place was built more than 90 years ago and holds oldworld charm with enough 21st Century finesse to please the most discriminating traveler with its Spanish colonnades, central location and what has to be the shadiest 18 holes of championship golf west of the Mississippi! If you know me, you know I always leave a little extra time at the end of the business day for golf, etc. There are plenty of courses here in Chandler and over 200 courses throughout the Valley, perfect for all levels of play. Two local courses, the Nicklaus-designed Bear Creek, and Ocotillo Golf Resort, a U.S. Open Qualifying site respectively, provided me two distinctly different challenges. Of course, if you get a chance to come in March, like I did, there are plenty of Cactus League Spring Training baseball games scheduled throughout the valley at a number of stadiums, all within a short drive. Did I mention the weather...is it ever NOT 70 degrees and sunny here in the spring? Just lovely! Hot Spot Alert: Family Friendly! The Travel Blogger was lucky enough to have the family along for this trip and I gained a lot of points for the effort. Shopping, dining, spas, activities, culture, just EVERYTHING to make it the perfect vacation getaway! Chandler Fashion Center and Casa Paloma both feature high-end retail experiences the spouse still raves about. There were even complimentary personal shopping services available at Chandler Fashion Center! What bliss! Firebird’s, PF Chang’s, Abuelo’s, Roy’s, The Keg, Flemings, Tomasso’s, My Big Fat Greek Restaurant and a huge array of other wonderful establishments kept the taste buds in a constant state of bliss during the entire trip. Historic Downtown Chandler
featured more local boutique eateries than we had time for – another reason for a speedy return! Downtown is also home to eclectic shops, art galleries, museums and a world class Center for the Arts that draws entertainers from all over the globe. The kids had a great time at the highly acclaimed City Skate Park and the city aquatic centers that are more like theme parks – minus the eye-popping entry fees – another home run with the family. Firebird Raceway is home to national drag racing events and Rawhide – a virtual Old-West town – is right across the border on the Gila River Indian Community and the Phoenix Zoo is just minutes away.
I mentioned Spring Training baseball, but Chandler is only minutes from an array of professional sports venues home to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Coyotes and the Phoenix Mercury. The Travel Blogger also noted several casinos in the immediate area. Drive a little longer and you’ll be skiing (snow and water), mountain biking, fishing, spelunking (one of the Travel Blogger’s favorite words), hiking down the trails of the Grand Canyon, gazing at the majestic red rocks of Sedona or paying a visit to Tombstone, the town too tough to die! Chandler’s central location and close proximity to Sky Harbor International Airport makes it a win-win situation for business and pleasure!
Special events and festivals are plentiful with the annual Ostrich Festival (Chandler was home to ostrich farms back in the day and now they race them at the event), and the Cinco de Mayo Celebration featuring, you guessed it, racing Chihuahuas! There is also a 40-foot tree made of tumbleweeds constructed for the winter holidays, anchoring a wonderfully festive and extensively lit area, for the Chandler Hometown Holiday Light display. Free outdoor concerts are held nearly yearround and the sky lights up for one of the largest 4th of July Independence Day events in the region.
Hot Spot Alert: In summary, this trip felt like a vacation! Well, there you have it travelers. It’s easy to see how Chandler receives a five-star rating from this Blogger for one very progressive, high-tech, convenient, and fun City. If you are coming here for business, remember to add a few days to your trip and treat yourself to some real fun; bring the family (they will LOVE you for it). Really, why be anywhere else? Chandler Center for the Arts The Chandler Center for the Arts is a world-class performing arts venue located in the heart of Downtown Chandler that showcases some of today’s most talented performers and artwork from local
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the 64,000-square-foot Chandler Center for the Arts were held in 1987 and the grand opening was celebrated in 1989. The unique design of the facility, featuring a “turntable divisible” auditorium system, allows two sections of seating in the rear of the main auditorium to rotate 180 degrees to face two more intimate stages. Walls move with the seating areas to prevent sound interference so that three events can run simultaneously. With a total seating capacity of 1,550, the Main Stage is capable of presenting large-scale theatrical and concert attractions. The Little Theater, seating 365, is well suited for plays and musical revues. Intimate performances are held in the 255-seat Recital Hall, including chamber music and a reader’s theater. The hallmark of the complex is its

superb acoustics, with the numerous turntable configurations offering a variety of options for sound transfer. The Center’s considerable amenities do not cease with those areas usually seen by the public. Below the facilities are expansive dressing rooms, production offices and tunnel access connecting stage areas. Located in the rear of the building are a dance studio, rehearsal hall and scene shop. A television studio offers continuous broadcasts over Chandler’s cable service, emphasizing cultural and educational programs for both students and the general public. The Chandler Center for the Arts is ideally situated at the major intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue, at the north end of Downtown Chandler. Location: 250 N. Chandler Fashion Center One of the most recent additions to the Westcor family, Chandler Fashion Center is a premier regional mall offering a new concept in shopping experiences. The mall is anchored by Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Robinsons-May and Sears, and highlights The Village, an outdoor pavilion with a variety of restaurants, Harkins 20-plex Theater and SRP Centennial Waters, an interactive display of music, light and sound. Some of the other 180+ shops and eateries include Eddie Bauer Home, Pottery Barn Kids, Coach, Arden B, Harry & David, The Apple Store, Sephora, and Cheesecake Factory. Chandler Fashion Center also offers unique services such as personal shopping, valet parking and Curbside Concierge where meals can be ordered ahead of time from participating restaurants and delivered to you while you remain in your vehicle, at the main mall entrance. Chandler Fashion Center is located on Chandler Boulevard at Highway 101/Price Freeway, just three miles west of Historic Downtown Chandler, or four miles east of Interstate 10. Historic Downtown Chandler Historic Downtown Chandler is located at Arizona Avenue just south of Chandler Boulevard and offers an excellent variety of shopping and dining, as well a host of museums and galleries. The square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Dr. Alexander J. Chandler, the founding father for the City of Chandler was a visionary during his time and was inspired by the City Beautiful
Movement. The design followed the founding principles of the movement, which centered on the beautification and development of an urban area with the city’s core as a public park with surrounding retail buildings designed to create beauty and harmony. Eclectic art galleries, trendy boutiques, tasty restaurants and the historic Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort surround Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, the City’s original town square. Today, Historic Downtown Chandler has become a dining mecca offering unique eateries such as Kokopelli Winery (an Arizona micro-winery and café), InPockets (a European deli and bakery), 98 South Restaurant and Wine Bar, La Stalla Cucina Rustica Restaurant, Brunchie’s, El Zocalo Mexican Grille and many more. Boutique shops include such places as Di Sciacca Company featuring museum quality, original mouth blown glassware and Serendipity, a unique gift shop. This is a great place to spend an afternoon, wandering through the shops, breaking for a delicious lunch, and perhaps spend some time relaxing in the park. Historic Downtown Chandler is also home to a year round farmer’s market held Thursday afternoons as well as many events such as the annual Jazz Festival each spring. Chandler Pavilions/Casa Paloma Shopping Center Chandler Pavilions and Casa Paloma have a decidedly upscale feel, and offer unique shopping, dining and recreation. Here you can find year-round ice-skating at Desert Schools Coyote Center, state-of-the art technology at Showcase Entertainment, and spectacular kitchen furnishings and cooking lessons at Sur la Table. Trendsetters will find the latest fashions at Talbots, White House/Black Market, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and the nation’s only stand alone Philosophy retail store. Don’t forget to save time to enjoy a meal at any one of their many restaurants including Tomaso’s, Bucca di Beppo, Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill, Roy’s and My Big Fat Greek Restaurant – just to mention a few. Casa Paloma also offers shoppers special events throughout the year including their Saturday market, which is typically held October through mid-May. Cactus League Spring Training The Arizona Cactus League hosts twelve major league baseball teams in the relaxed atmosphere of spring training. Chandler's central location and easy access to all of the stadiums, provides a great home-base for catching all of the major league action. When the first Europeans arrived, all that remained of this ancient culture were the ruins of villages, irrigation canals and various artifacts. Among these ruins is the Casa Grande, or “Big House,” one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. Kartchner Caverns State Park Benson • 520.586.4100 pr.state.az.us/Parks/parkhtml/kartchner.html In 1974, two young cavers were exploring the limestone hills at the base of the Whetstone Mountains. In the bottom of a sinkhole they found a narrow crack that seemed to indicate a cave. After several hours of crawling, they entered a pristine cavern. The cave’s existence didn’t become public knowledge until 1988, and only recently have visitors been allowed inside. Extraordinary precautions have been taken to conserve the cave’s exceptional features.
