The built-in audience of sunseekers that flock here each year can be found enjoying our historic downtown arts districts that boast unique shops, eclectic galleries, and restaurants serving up delectable cuisine. Visitors frequent our eyecatching Mesa Arts Center – the largest arts and entertainment complex in the Southwest. They pack the Arizona
Museum of Natural History and bring their children to explore their creativity at the IDEA Museum for Youth. Outdoor enthusiasts love Mesa’s proximity to the Tonto National Forest – one of the most visited “urban” forests in the country. Mesa is also becoming the region’s next big college town with the development of the Mesa Center for Higher Education. In 2012, five private, liberal arts colleges announced they are opening campuses in our city. CACTUS LEAGUE The Cactus League is currently comprised of 15 Major League Baseball teams training in Arizona. The 2013 Cactus League spring training season set the all-time record for overall league attendance with 1,732,075 attendees at games. All 15 Major League Baseball teams are consolidated in the Phoenix-metropolitan area, a contributing factor that continues to attribute to yearover-year increases. On average, Mesa hosts 175,000 attendees annually during spring training games. One of the top-attended games ever held in the Cactus League was the Cubs at Mariners in the 2010 season with 13,629 attendees. More records are expected at the new Cubs Park in 2014 and beyond.

PHOENIXMESA METRO AREA VENUES CONNECTING TO MESA: VALLEY METRO LIGHT RAIL In 2008, the much anticipated arrival of the METRO Light Rail mass transit system made its debut in Phoenix. Now, construction has begun on extending the rail service through the heart of Mesa. The 3.1-mile, $200 million Central Mesa light rail extension will travel through downtown Mesa and set to be completed in 2015. METRO received $35.5 million in federal fiscal year 2012 and in October 2012, the Mesa project was awarded an additional $75 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The extension – which carves through Downtown Mesa, past three museums and three liberal arts colleges, and in front of the renowned Mesa Arts Center – will bring passengers even closer to the vibrant area with a Main Street filled with numerous shops, restaurants, bars, yoga studios, and distinctive boutiques and businesses.

VISITOR IMPACTS ARIZONA VISITOR INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT Following national trends, Arizona’s travel industry experienced modest gains in 2012 with 2013 performance expected to remain intact. While we continue to watch the U.S. economy edge forward, according to PwC the continued recovery in hotel room demand supports stronger price gains in U.S. revenue per available room in 2013. This outlook for RevPAR recovery reflects continued momentum in business travel, including gains in corporate meetings, as well as leisure travel growth that includes greater volumes of international visitors. In Arizona, total direct travel spending was $19.3 billion in 2012.
