The Evolution of Cider Days: A 50-Year Timeline Over half a century, Cider Days has grown from a modest neighborhood gathering into one of Lakewood’s most beloved and enduring community traditions . What began as a small heritage festival — rooted in local orchards, hands-on skills and the simple joy of fresh-pressed cider — has evolved into a celebration that reflects the city’s changing identity while honoring the agricultural spirit that shaped it . This timeline traces that evolution through the posters, advertisements and archival imagery that have defined the festival’s look and feel over the decades. Each shift in artwork, typography and branding style tells its own story: from hand-drawn illustrations and rustic motifs to vibrant modern graphics that attract expanding audiences . Together, these materials chronicle not just the growth of an event, but the memories, traditions and community pride that have made Cider Days a Lakewood staple for generations .

Early Hand-Drawn Identity One of the earliest surviving Cider Days advertisements already shows many of the traditions that would define the event for decades to come. The original handdrawn artwork reflects the small, community-driven atmosphere of the festival’s early years when Cider Days operated as more of a oneday heritage gathering focused on agricultural demonstrations and local history.

Expansion into a Full Weekend Festival By the early 1980s, Cider Days had expanded into a two-day event featuring antique machinery, quilting, spinning, entertainment, arts and crafts and historical demonstrations. This era also highlights the growing relationship with the Front Range Antique Power Association, which became one of the defining long-term partnerships in the festival’s history. Agricultural Heritage Takes Center Stage By the mid-1980s, antique farm equipment, threshing demonstrations and tractor culture had become central parts of the festival identity. This period appears to mark the beginning of tractor pulls becoming one of the signature attractions associated with Cider Days.

The Apple Becomes the Icon The late 1980s brought a major visual shift in the festival branding. The 1987 materials begin incorporating more modern graphic design styles and stronger apple imagery, helping establish apples as one of the defining visual identities of Cider Days for decades to come.
1991
Interactive Heritage Experiences Expand By the early 1990s, advertisements begin emphasizing more hands4
on experiences including cider pressing, blacksmithing, hayrides and historical craft demonstrations. Cider Days was evolving into a larger interactive heritage festival experience rather than solely an antique machinery showcase.
1997
Growth into a Regional Festival By 1997, Cider Days had grown into a much larger community tradition. This era also appears to mark one of the first visible admission charges in surviving advertisements, listing admission at $1 per person or $5 per family.
2000
(25th Anniversary) A Modern Harvest Festival Emerges Entering the 2000s, the festival expanded into a broader familyfocused harvest celebration featuring entertainment, food vendors, hayrides, petting zoos and larger community programming while still preserving its agricultural roots.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Celebrating Life's Milestones
2026 is a milestone year for the nation, for Colorado and for Heritage Lakewood. Alongside those larger anniversaries, it feels equally important to celebrate the milestones unfolding within our volunteer community. The nearly 250 volunteers who make up our Heritage, Culture & the Arts family are living wonderfully full lives. They are caregivers, travelers, runners, students, retirees, performers, parents and lifelong learners. Amid all the busyness of life, they continue to carve out time to share their talents with Lakewood. It’s remarkable to witness the way many of our volunteers stretch time, making space not only for Heritage, Culture & the Arts, but also for the passions and adventures that make life meaningful. This year, we have two volunteers, Loretta and Judy, celebrating their 95th birthdays while also marking 22 and 30 years of volunteer service. Later this year, Mary and Anne will celebrate their 90th birthdays, with service hours numbering well into the thousands. Volunteer, Charlie noted that she celebrates each year as simply “another year of laughter” within this volunteer community. While volunteer Josh marks a personal milestone— entering his forties while running marathons around
the world—another kind of milestone is echoing through Heritage Lakewood. If you’ve listened to the Agricultural Hub audio tour, the voice guiding you through our city’s agricultural past belongs to Grey, who is just beginning to hit her own milestones as she makes her way through high school. Together these milestones tell the story of a vibrant community living life fully while giving generously. This past spring marked Jessica Riggs’ 10th recital with the Lakewood Cultural Center dance program. To celebrate this milestone, we asked her 10 questions reflecting on teaching, dance, community and the memories made along the way.

1. What inspired you to start dancing? “We joke that my parents put me in dance at age 5 because I would just MOVE (and break things). Like I needed to focus my energy on something so it wouldn’t go everywhere!” 2. What has kept you inspired through 10 recital seasons? “My students! My favorite thing is seeing everyone grow in the art form. I also love how dance can make someone immediately feel better if they are having a bad day.” 3. What do you love most about teaching? “I love the connections made, the lightbulbs that go off and the smiles of success when something works or improves!” 4. What do you hope students take away from your classes? “I hope they know they can always dance —that it will always be there for them.

Even if they leave dance, it will still be there for them when they return.” Describe your teaching style in three words. “Supportive, humorous, and injury preventing.” Favorite dance memory? "Too many to choose from! In 2018, I toured the Czech Republic with my husband’s chamber orchestra and performed at the Czech Museum of Music in Prague." What is one memorable moment from your years teaching with us? “When we had to put our beloved dog down last year, the dance community at the Cultural Center rallied around me with so much support. They truly cared, and I love that we’ve built a community here that cares not only about dance, but about each other.” Favorite music to teach to? “Most anything, but I am partial to sad songs.” Fun fact about you outside the studio? “I’ve climbed 45 Fourteeners!” Advice for young dancers? Adult dancers? “Never stop!”

For more than three decades, History Colorado’s State Historical Fund has supported preservation efforts in all 64 counties. Competitive grants fund projects that protect historic sites, preserve community stories, generate revenue through programming and support preservation professionals. Heritage Lakewood has received many of these grants over the years.
The original “Birds of Belmar Park (first edition)” booklet was created in the 1980s. Today’s edition was inspired by a Lakewood resident and enthusiastic birder who wanted to find more current information about the species of birds he is most likely to see in Belmar Park. With support from local artists, staff from Bear Creek Lake Park and Audubon volunteers, this collaborative project now offers current bird data, paired with hand-drawn illustrations. This display highlights the birds, the book and the community behind its creation.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS NICHO BOX | AT-HOME ART PROJECT
Create your own Dia de Muertos Nicho Box This type of Central and South American folk art refers to a three-dimensional display box, like a shadow box, featuring a scene, image or item that is special to the person who creates it. They are created as part of a Dia de Muertos ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar) and can be displayed year-round. This craft comes from our Heritage, Culture & the Arts Outreach Program that celebrates Dia de Muertos. Step 1: Print the Nicho template onto lightweight cardstock and cut out the Nicho frame and shadow box. Step 2: Color the frame with bright colors and decorate it with your own artwork. Optional: Add gems or use markers or paint pens to embellish further. Add 3D objects such as paper or plastic flowers, mini figures or trinkets. Step 3: Fold the box: • Fold along all black lines and lay the paper with the folded lines down. • Where the X is indicated in the picture, use your glue stick to apply glue to the entire flap. • Flip it over and fold these sides inward. Press the glued flap onto the center. Repeat with the other side. • With the walls of the box established, use your glue stick to apply glue only on the small X’s. Press the flap to the top of the established paper wall. Do the same with the other flap. • You now have a finished paper box. • Last step: Glue your picture in the middle. Step 4: Glue the frame to the box. Step 5: All done and ready to display!
