Led by Chuck Sitero, the ensemble’s self-titled debut won Best Bluegrass Album in 2025. By marrying traditional roots with jazz and jam influences, the band delivers a fresh, creative energy that resonates with purists and new fans alike.

June 24 | Macon Music Revue

Soul & Southern Rock

A “preservation band” dedicated to the heritage of Macon, Georgia, this five-piece ensemble honors icons like Little Richard and Otis Redding. Their performances explore the Capricorn Records catalog, featuring hits from The Allman Brothers Band and Marshall Tucker Band. Their 2025 debut on Terminus Records captures the grit of gospel-fueled vocals, slide guitar and Hammond organ.

July 8 | Walden

Indie & Alternative Rock

This Denver-based quartet is built on a decade of friendship and road-tested chemistry. Having toured all 50 states, Walden has cultivated a loyal, grassroots following through dynamic live shows and appearances at major national festivals. Known for emotionally resonant songwriting and a polished stage presence, the group continues to build momentum as a standout indie act.

July 15 | Hazel Miller & The Collective

Rhythm & Blues

A Colorado music icon for more than three decades, Hazel Miller is renowned for a powerful voice that seamlessly crosses musical boundaries. Leading The Collective, she delivers high-energy sets blending rhythm and blues, jazz and funk. Miller’s infectious spirit and stunning vocal prowess have made her a staple of the region’s music scene and a force on every stage she graces.

July 22 | Chatham Rabbits

Americana & Folk

North Carolina duo Sarah and Austin McCombie have earned national praise from American Songwriter and Paste. Their 2025 album, “Be Real with Me,” showcases the heartfelt songwriting that has defined their career. Whether performing 194 neighborhood concerts during the pandemic or appearing on PBS, the duo maintains a strong sense of community and beguiling musicality.

July 29 | Paul McDonald & The Mourning Doves Rock

After gaining national attention on “American Idol,” Alabama-born Paul McDonald returned to his Nashville songwriting roots. His latest work, “So Long to the Dark Side,” is a gospel-tinged collection of “cosmic Americana” influenced by Tom Petty. Alongside The Mourning Doves, McDonald delivers a raw, lived-in energy that blurs the line between a rock show and a revival.

Set against the historic backdrop of Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park, the 2026 Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert Series transforms the midweek slump into the ultimate outdoor retreat.

Starting Wednesday, June 17, the community is invited to swap the daily grind for a night out at the amphitheater to enjoy a high-energy lineup ranging from soulful Southern rock to Americana folk. Advance tickets are available beginning April 16!

FIRED UP: UPDATED KILN YARD AT WHAC

Rising from the literal and metaphorical ashes of renovation, the Washington Heights Arts Center’s kiln yard has unveiled its revitalized space, breathing new life into a vital hub for Colorado’s ceramics community. Aligned with the center’s mission to provide an intimate, educational space where

diverse creatives can explore and achieve their artistic visions, the enhanced kiln yard offers a safer, more accessible environment for makers of all experience levels.

The ceramics program at Washington Heights is a regional destination known for varying firing techniques, breadth of

glazes and expert instruction. The outdoor kiln yard supports six kilns powered by propane and wood, allowing artists to explore five unique firing processes in a single shared space. These offerings continue to make the center a hub for creative growth and collaboration.

Renovations focused on improving fire safety, student access and organization of the kiln area. In response to regional fire safety recommendations, the center upgraded storage, improved the layout and access, and strengthened fire mitigation measures while preserving the character of the space.

With these improvements complete, the kiln yard is ready to welcome artists back for new and continuing creative experiences. The updated space ensures the center can continue growing with the community and supporting transformational artistic opportunities for years to come.

For more than a decade, INSPIRE Arts Lakewood has helped the community discover the city’s vibrant creative scene — even earning a Governor’s Award in 2016. Traditionally, each summer offered a concentrated burst of free and low-cost cultural experiences at more than 20 galleries, shops, and venues.

However, 12 years of programming have proven that Lakewood’s culture shouldn’t be limited to a single season. Moving forward, INSPIRE will feature and promote the work of Lakewood’s arts and culture partners through social media and web support every month of the year. This shift allows for a more meaningful connection between the community and the cultural practitioners who make Lakewood a colorful place to live and visit.

To kick off this year-round initiative, the city’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts facilities will host free

exhibitions and activities throughout the summer. A public reception will be on May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. for the opening of several new shows:

• Amazar Tales | North Gallery

• Complexity | Lobby and Corner Galleries

• The Colorado Watercolor Society National Juried Show | Mezzanine

• Plein Air Buddies | Richey Gallery

Woven Wonders and Upcycled Worlds: Exhibitions at Lakewood Cultural Center

Amazar Tales: An Immersive Arts Experience

North Gallery | May 30-August 16

In a recent interview, artist Ron Isaacson shared the motivations behind his work and his approach to the immersive exhibition, “Amazar Tales,” which utilizes reclaimed and upcycled materials.

“As a sculptor, I assemble a multitude of components to create objects of wonder,” Isaacson said. “Most of what I create are assemblagesgathering elements and ingredients to birth objects or ideas. Some, small and intimate, are designed to be held in one’s hand. Others, large and magnificent, meant to be viewed from a distance. Still others fashioned to make an impact on hearts and minds.”

Isaacson’s work is part of a growing movement that the art world has termed “Immersive Experiential Temporal Sculptures.” For the past decade, he has focused on developing a body of “EcoSculptures” and related works titled “Amazar Tales,” designed to bring focus to ecological issues facing the planet.

“Each element—flocks of elaborate 3D Amazar Avian Sculptures, Forever Gardens, Stories and Fables—plays a role in developing awareness of important issues,” Isaacson said.

Over the past few years, Isaacson has created larger immersive environments featuring flocks of 100 or more “Amazar Avians” in ecogardens to welcome and involve visitors. We are excited to have Ron’s flock of Amazars come roost at the Lakewood Cultural Center this summer!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

THE COMMUNITY BEHIND CAR NO. 25

The Lakewood Heritage, Culture & the Arts (HCA) Division partners with a diverse array of community members to keep history alive. From organized groups like the Daughters of the American Revolution and faith communities such as Calvary Baptist to Jeffco Justice Services and passionate history enthusiasts, building these relationships is a vital, yet often unseen, part of the city’s volunteer program.

This spirit of partnership is at the heart of the Car No. 25 story. More than a historic trolley, the car represents the many individuals who have chosen to care for it and invest in its legacy. A sincere thank you goes to the community members who visited the Denver Federal Center including most recently, in early May for the annual open house. Their record turnout to enjoy short, free rides on the trolley highlights the enduring connection Lakewood feels toward this piece of transit history.

Built in 1911 by Denver’s Woeber Carriage Company, Car No. 25 is the last completely intact electric railway car from the more than 250 that once served the Denver area. Originally operating on the 13-mile Denver–Lakewood–Golden interurban line, the car, affectionately known as a trolley, seated 52 passengers and completed the route in about 40 minutes, connecting regional communities for decades.

When trolley service was abandoned in 1950, Car No. 25’s future was uncertain. That same year, the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club purchased the car for $150 to ensure its preservation. In the following decades, dedicated volunteers painstakingly restored the vehicle—rebuilding wood paneling, repainting the original green color scheme, and installing replica

seats. Ultimately, this effort resulted in approximately 12,000 hours of work by at least 95 volunteers and led to Car No. 25’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, its 100th anniversary year.

Since 2010, the Denver Trolley (formerly Platte Valley Trolley) has partnered with the City of Lakewood to operate and maintain the car at the Denver Federal Center. HCA invests in ongoing coordination so each group can contribute its expertise while remaining supported by the broader community.

“For me, Car No. 25 is a people magnet,” said Steve Elkins, a trolley volunteer for 15 years. “It galvanizes riders to share generational family stories...Keeping history alive is a great privilege for our operators and conductors.” One guest shared that she met her husband on Car No. 25 and another remembered riding to Foss Drugs for a weekly family ice cream social. These personal milestones transform the trolley from a simple machine into a vessel for the city’s collective memory.

By nurturing these partnerships, HCA ensures that Car No. 25 continues to roll forward—not just as a preserved artifact, but as a shared community legacy sustained by many hands and a collective commitment to preserving local rail history.

SYMBOL OF OUR STATE

Make-your-own Colorado State Flag

Trace a century and a half of Colorado history by recreating the symbol of our state. From its frontier roots to our modern communities, every color on the flag contributes to the story: the blue of our vast skies, the white of the high peaks and the red soil of the Colorado landscape. By adding a touch of gold for our famous sunshine and mining heritage, you connect 150 years of the past to the home we love today.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Paint the sticks: Paint four popsicle sticks blue and two white. Set aside to dry completely.

2. Create the yellow sun: Draw and cut out a small circle from the yellow construction paper.

3. Create the red “C”: Draw a circle on the red construction paper about twice the size of the yellow circle. Cut out the large circle, then cut out the center to form a letter “C,” making sure the yellow circle fits inside.

4. Assemble the flag base: Once dry, glue the popsicle sticks onto the cardstock in this order from top to bottom:

• Blue-white-white-blue. Leave a small gap between the blue and white popsicle sticks and no gap between the two white popsicle sticks.

• Stack and glue a blue popsicle stick on top of the blue and white popsicle sticks to hide the gap.

• This creates a 3D illusion and shapes the work into a rectangular shape.

5. Attach the emblem: Glue the yellow circle in the center of the white stripes. Glue the red “C” around the yellow circle.

6. Finish: Trim any excess cardstock. Place under a heavy book while drying to keep flat.

7. Display your flag to celebrate the Sesquicentennial! For more crafting fun, register for a Craft Tea at Heritage Lakewood. Scan the QR code or visit
