Welcome to the theatre! Whether you’re here to see The Sound of Music, Beetlejuice, or Monty Python’s Spamalot, I hope you have a wonderful time. Each of these titles share the distinction of being returning favorites to the DCPA. As much as we celebrate bringing brand new shows to town, we also love to be reacquainted with stories that have stood the test of time. It’s also very possible that you’re seeing one of these shows for the first time! Whatever the case, please sit back and enjoy the magic of live performance. The “magic of live performance” was alive and well at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 7 when the Broadway industry came together to celebrate its work at the 79th annual Tony Awards. I had the good fortune of attending the event and was so moved by the joyous acknowledgment of the amazingly talented, creative, and passionate artists who bring the work alive. The honors for Best New Musical and Best Revival of a Musical went to Schmigadoon! and Ragtime, respectively. There is no doubt that each of these productions are inspiring examples of what musical theatre can be. Will either of these shows make it to Denver? Stay in touch with us at the DCPA to find out! SATURDAY NIGHT ALIVE SIZZLES On June 13, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ 45th annual Saturday Night Alive gala wowed 450 guests with dazzling decor courtesy of the Denver Center Theatre Company plus an auction, dinner, performance, and dancing. The performance began with a medley by this year’s Bobby G High School Award finalists who demonstrated the importance of arts education. Then, five recent Denver Center Theatre Company performers took to the stage with a bring-the-house-down show starring Maiesha McQueen (The Color Purple), Mary Kate Morrissey (Rattlesnake Kate reading), Linda Mugleston (Sweeney Todd), Neyla Pekarek (Rattlesnake Kate), and Antoine L. Smith (Oklahoma!). While the black-tie affair celebrates the DCPA’s education and theatre programs, the non-profit organization also honored this year’s Daniel L. Ritchie Spotlight Award recipients — Keith and Kathie Finger — for their extraordinary philanthropy in the arts.

SPAMALOT ’S QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL OF HUMOR B Y C O L L I N VA N S O N

L

Let’s start by getting the vocabulary straight. The word pythonesque means long, scaly, and capable of devouring a Bornean bearded pig in a single bite. By contrast, the word Pythonesque (capital P this time) means absurd, sharp-witted, and otherwise reminiscent of the British comedy troupe Monty Python, none of whose members are snakes. In addition to spawning their own adjective, Monty Python has achieved such universal recognition that their influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles’ influence on music. More than 50 years since the release of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, iconic scenes featuring the French Taunter and the Black Knight remain as quotable as ever — even for those who have yet to see the movie. Indeed, that was the experience of Josh Rhodes, who received his first introduction to Python in college. “You can’t go to theater school without everyone quoting Monty Python,” Rhodes said during an interview that fittingly took place on April Fools’ Day. “Before I’d ever seen it, I knew all the quotes. But finally somebody got out a VHS tape and said, ‘Look what I got!’” In the years since that initial screening, Monty Python has come to play an increasingly prominent role in

Rhodes’ life and career. In 2005, when Python veteran Eric Idle adapted Monty Python and the Holy Grail into the Broadway musical Spamalot, Rhodes’ husband joined the cast in roles that included Sir Bedevere and King Arthur’s squire Patsy. And though he kept his 2005 Spamalot ticket stub, Rhodes never guessed he would one day direct and choreograph the show’s 2023 revival and subsequent national tour. “It’s been a wonderful progression,” he said, “from VHS tape to actually getting to do it eight shows a week.” As someone who grew up in the Midwest, where “British humor was not something that was easily accessible,” Rhodes has a keen appreciation for how Spamalot caters to Python superfans and newcomers alike. For those who can quote the movie by heart, the musical affords ample opportunity for vocal participation. When the much-beloved Knights Who Say “Ni!” appear onstage, expectant audiences will often shout “Ni!” along with them. “It’s just electric,” Rhodes said. “There are certain moments where the audience acts as a Greek chorus.” And for theatergoers who have never contemplated the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, Rhodes was pleased to report that “the material stands as is. It’s still

absolutely delightful, and it’s absolutely absurd, and it’s joyful to meet these characters for the first time.” That includes the Black Knight, whose blindly optimistic brand of mortal combat requires no prior introduction. “‘It’s just a flesh wound’ and all those things are hilarious,” said Rhodes, “even if you didn’t grow up saying it to your friends while you’re fighting on the playground.” From a directorial standpoint, that nonstop hilarity is also Spamalot’s greatest challenge. “Comedy is a physical sport for an audience,” said Rhodes. “And as funny as this show is — and the jokes just keep delivering — sometimes you can err on delivering too many. ’Cause the audience gets tired; they need a break.” In order to give audience members a chance to catch their breath, Rhodes relies on what he calls “closing the fence.” When the metaphorical fence is open, actors are free to engage with the audience more directly, to “walk that tightrope of improv” in a way that makes each performance a unique event. But part of Rhodes’ job, he explained, is to decide when the fence needs to swing back shut: “At this point you gotta move on, or we will wear [the audience] out for when we really need them.” While Spamalot is, in its own words, “lovingly ripped off” from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Rhodes maintains that the transition from screen to stage has left Python’s satirical wit just as sharp as ever. “What they did with the musical,” said Rhodes, “is they firmly said — in the same way that they say, ‘We love [King] Arthur, but we’re going to make fun of him’ — we love musicals, but we’re also gonna make fun of them.” The delight the show takes in poking fun at musical theater is on full display in numbers like “The Song That Goes Like This,” “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway,” and “Diva’s Lament,” all of which showcase the creators’ deep appreciation of the art form. “I think in order to make fun of something you have to really have a love for what it wants to be,” said Rhodes.

THE OUTSIDERS Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s enduring novel, The Outsiders arrives from Broadway (Sep 8-27) with a fresh perspective on a story that has resonated for generations. Set in Tulsa in 1967, this musical explores the fragile divide between two groups of teenagers — the working-class Greasers and the more privileged Socs — through the eyes of Ponyboy Curtis, a thoughtful young man trying to make sense of loyalty, loss, and identity. This coming-of-age story is brought to life with a mix of music, movement, and staging that highlights the characters’ emotional journeys. Songs reveal the dreams of the “outsiders” who struggle to be accepted, while the physicality of the ensemble underscores the tension and energy of their world. Rather than focusing solely on conflict, the musical gives space to quieter moments of connection, showing how friendship and understanding can emerge in unexpected ways. Audiences familiar with the novel will find new dimensions in its theatrical retelling, while newcomers are introduced to a story that still feels strikingly current. The Outsiders invites reflection on belonging, resilience, and the quiet choices that shape who we become — offering a reminder that, even in divided communities, understanding can begin with simply seeing one another clearly.

Between the show’s good-natured mockery of King Arthur’s court and its elevation of politically minded peasants, Rhodes also sees a certain democratic optimism running throughout Spamalot. “They’re very democratic,” he said of the Pythons. “I think the reason they drill away at making fun of our political leaders is that they believe in the masses.” Laughter, tap dance, democracy — if it sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. For like an invading army hidden inside a Trojan Rabbit, there is still one shocking secret to be revealed: Josh Rhodes, director of Spamalot, has never tried the titular canned meat product. “People give it to me all the time,” he lamented. “I’m now Mr. Spam, so people think I want it. And I’m like, ‘I love Spam, but I don’t really want to eat it.’”

A CONVERSATION WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC DIRECTOR JACK O’BRIEN B Y M A R C O S N Á J E R A , C E N T E R T H E AT R E G R O U P MARCOS NÁJERA: If you don’t mind the pun, “Let’s start at the very beginning.” How would you describe your job as a theatre director? JACK O’BRIEN: I’m every show’s first audience. I’m every actor’s first audience. I’m every writer’s first audience, everybody. Whether it’s a classic or a brand-new piece, I look at it as if no one has ever seen it before. And I ask of it all the questions that you want to know: Why is this happening? Who are these people? NÁJERA: Can you describe the nitty gritty of a director’s day and job? O’BRIEN: It’s almost as if there’s a movie playing in my own head. And I read the material. I listen to the music. And in my own imagination once I’ve talked to my designers and everybody, I try to gently explain what I think I see. And they take off from that. They give me their version of it. And then what emerges on stage is some amalgam that we’ve all agreed upon. I’m going to try to put a real story on stage. Not one that just goes along with plot. For instance, I want the early numbers, say “Do-Re-Mi,” to look like Maria staged them. They shouldn’t look like they’ve been done by a Broadway choreographer. These are kids who haven’t been singing and dancing. And so a couple of them are going to waddle off into the corner and bump into walls and stuff.

NÁJERA: So, in essence, the children finally get a real rehearsal? O’BRIEN: For months! And obviously, they get better. Our Maria has never staged a number in her life. She’s a [religious] officiate in the mountains! I think the really fun number is “The Lonely Goatherd” because I think she is the greatest babysitter that ever was! She’s got a bunch of kids who are terrified of thunder and lightning, and she plays a game with them that is so outrageous and funny and adorable that we forget to be afraid. It’s a babysitter’s game. I think it’s an improv. They are making that song up as they go along. And I think it’s: how many things rhyme with goat? Coat, moat, wrote. I think that’s the game she is playing, that I’m not asking questions about. NÁJERA: What do you think the value is of recreating this story now, all these years later? O’BRIEN: We tell this story to each other over and over again because our world will always be in peril. And we take courage from the success of others [who have navigated] difficult circumstances. Its great value is that it happened. It’s not fiction. We know that this young woman showed up. She fell in love with the father and they fled just before the Nazis took over Austria. Any time you see people stand up for their own rights and make a moral decision, it’s riveting. There’s not just one reason why this is one of the most beloved shows in American history. It’s because... everybody sees not only how important it is to love and to be loved, but to have something worth loving.

ERIC IDLE (Book, Music & Lyrics) is one of the original six creators of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which began life on BBCTV in 1969. They eventually made six feature films, including two of the top ten comedy movies of all time. Eric, together with longtime collaborator and Composer John Du Prez, adapted The Holy Grail, into the hit musical Monty Python’s Spamalot, which ran for almost five years on Broadway, and popped up again on Broadway in a 2023 revival and is now touring the US. The original was nominated for 13 Tonys, winning 3, including Best Director for Mike Nichols and the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005, plus a Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy for the authors. They then created a Comic Oratorio Not The Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy based on Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which premiered in Toronto, and played The Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall and was eventually filmed with most of the Pythons at The Royal Albert Hall for the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. Eric wrote, directed and starred in The Rutles, the world’s first mockumentary, and in 2012 he sang his own song, Always Look On the Bright Side of Life, before a billion people at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2014 he directed and appeared alongside Conductor John Du Prez in the Monty Python final reunion show One Down Five To Go, which sold out London’s O2 Arena for ten nights. In 2018 his Sortabiography Always Look on the Bright of Life became a New York Times Best seller. In 2019 he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, which he survived thanks to early diagnosis and great Doctors. Following his appearance on The Masked Singer in 2022, he launched The Bright Side Fund (Standup2Cancer/Eric Idle) to help fund Research. His musical play What About Dick? with songs by JDP is currently playing on Prime and his latest book The Spamalot Diaries, which tell the tale of the creation of

Spamalot has just been nominated for a Thurber Award. His forthcoming book Idle in Provence, A Brief History of Thyme will be published by Harpers Select in September 2026. JOHN DU PREZ (Music). A Grammy Award-winning composer, John Du Prez has scored over 20 feature films including A Fish Called Wanda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I-III, Once Bitten, The Meaning of Life and the cult classic “Weird Al” Yankovic’s UHF. A Trevelyan Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford (Oriental Studies), he worked as a Music Lecturer at London University 1974 -9 and was Principal Horn of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and many other orchestras. He entered the film industry composing additional music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. It was on this project that he first worked with Eric Idle. This began their long writing partnership which culminated in Spamalot and Not The Messiah. He also worked on two movies for George Harrison’s Handmade Films (Bullshot & Shanghai Surprise) and played trumpet on many Top 20 hits with the UK salsa band Modern Romance, winners of the Best New Band 1981 award from the NY DJ Syndicate for their club hit Everybody Salsa. He was Music Director for Python’s 2014 O2 Arena concerts and recently scored the Bafta Award winning TV animation series The Clangers. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ 12th annual Bobby G High School Theatre Awards hit an all-time high — both in decibels and patrons. The expression “raise the rafters” certainly came to mind when nearly 2,000 tickets were distributed to celebrate the best in Colorado high school musical theatre on May 15 in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Considered the equivalent of a letter jacket, the Bobby G Awards recognized 128 nominees from 50 schools across the state in 17 categories. The evening was punctuated with performances by five schools nominated for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical: Arvada West High School for Big Fish, Denver School of the Arts for Big Fish, Grandview High School for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Broadway version), Vista Ridge High School for The Addams Family, and Windsor High School for Bright Star, the latter of which took home the top honors. Additionally, the evening featured a medley by nominees for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role. The previous 2025 winners of this coveted prize — Grayson Graham and Hannah Schnorr — were joined by this year’s nominees: Erick Cochenour who played Edward Bloom in Arvada West’s Big Fish, Grayson Allensworth who played Edward Bloom in Denver School of the Arts’ Big Fish, Gillian Reynolds who played Princess Winnifred and Sadie Hanson who played The Jester in Durango High School’s Once Upon a Mattress, Joey Getz who played Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Lutheran High School’s Guys & Dolls, Prugh Dunfee who played Ursula in Niwot High School’s Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Nathaniel Bicha who played Bobby Strong and Brielle Pinther who played Penelope Pennywise in Northfield High School’s Urinetown, Tavio Amouzou who played Carl Hanratty in Overland High School’s Catch Me If You Can, and Keegan Miller who played Alice Murphy in Windsor High School’s Bright Star. Grayson Allensworth and Gillian Reynolds won the category and went on to represent Colorado at The Jimmy Awards®/National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®), which is a celebration of student achievement in high school musical theatre across the country. Bringing Beetlejuice to the stage was never going to be simple. Fans of Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy-horror film are devoted to his visionary work. So when original director Alex Timbers assembled his design team for the Broadway musical, he needed someone who could create more than the usual visual splendor of a Broadway stage. It was going to require magic. For that, Timbers turned to Michael Weber, an illusionist with deep roots in the magic community. “One of the things I tried to do was that the illusion components would always have some kind of Tim Burton hat tip without mirroring anything that happened in the film,” Weber says. Weber came to magic early. As a teen in Southern California, he joined the Long Beach Mystics and by the time he was 14, Weber had been accepted by the Junior Society of the Magic Castle, the famed Los Angeles magicians’ clubhouse. There, he was taken under the mentorship of the great sleight-of-hand artist, Charlie Miller, who introduced Weber to fellow protégé Ricky Jay. Together, the two formed a business, Deceptive Practice, and Weber by his twenties was making Gary Sinise’s legs disappear in Forrest Gump and creating a ladder of light for the original Broadway production of Angels in America. But for Beetlejuice, going from film to stage required a number of fresh creations, all retaining Burton’s original aesthetic. “Maybe there’s a puff of smoke, or a bolt of lightning, or something that catches on fire. That magic serves a story purpose.”

It’s a bit different from working as a solo magician. “What makes an illusion for a Broadway show different from a show with one person on stage…is the person onstage is an actor playing the part of someone who has these powers. There’s ordinarily not a bigger story around it,” Weber says. For example, the recently deceased Maitlands are living in the attic, trying to figure out how to survive as the dead, and how to preserve their beloved home. “Part of their journey is discovering what their powers are in their new state,” Weber says. “How can they use them to get what they want? “So what one has to do in terms of the design elements is [determine] where is this character coming from? What are their powers, what is the magic of their character? Can it be quick? Do we have to do it in the middle of nothing? There are one or two moments where characters have to levitate, and that just happens in the middle of everything, there’s no room for wires or anything.” At its core, though, Beetlejuice is about more than sleight of hand and flash pots. “It’s a show about family,” Weber explains. “It’s a show about the families that we have, the families that we get, the families we wish we had and the secondary families that we build.”

We know how to deliver affordable, reliable, and ever-cleaner energy and we are investing resources and time to find ways to drastically lower the carbon intensity of the energy we produce while maintaining the important pillars of affordability and reliability. Our company and our employees take pride investing our time and talent into the many communities we call home. Chevron invests millions of dollars and volunteers thousands of hours with community organizations across the state. Our focus areas include meeting essential needs, promoting diversity and inclusion, enhancing education, providing arts experiences, and protecting the environment. Through several different partners, Chevron supports science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects at universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, and career technical education centers on the Front Range and Western Slope. We also work with non-profits whose programming encourages young boys and girls to explore STEM in various ways. Our support of robotics programs in several schools enables youth to have hands-on learning. We have proudly supported the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for more than three years, believing in its vital contribution to the state’s creative energy. The arts are for everyone, and Chevron’s contribution enables DCPA’s educational programs, youth theater, budding teen playwrights, Denver’s own theater company, and Broadway productions.
