High School students across the nation are inspired by Hamilton with its infusion of rap, hip hop and diverse casting that lets them actually picture themselves on stage. Plus, locally, nothing is quite as inspiring as two brothers from Eaglecrest High School who were both cast in the show (see page 22). The dream of making it big actually seems tangible, but how do you get your start? DCPA Education has numerous opportunities. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) actively works with student audiences in theatres and classrooms. From acting classes for children, teens and adults to fieldtrips and residencies for schools, DCPA Education reaches nearly 106,000 students each year. Its Regional High School Playwriting Workshops and Competition invites high schools to book a playwriting workshop that introduces students to the fundamentals of writing. Then, students may submit their one-act plays into the competition. The top three plays are given a public reading, and one play is selected for full production by teens during DCPA Education’s summer acting program.
On the other end of the spectrum are those teens who take the written word and perform it. The DCPA’s Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrates the best in high school theatre performance. Schools statewide are invited to enter the competition, after which adjudicators review performances and provide valuable feedback. Nominations are made in a variety of categories and all participating schools attend the Oscaresque ceremony, filled with laughter, tears and outstanding performances. Last year, nearly 4,200 students were adjudicated; 1,056 benefited from musical theatre workshops, and more than 1,700 attended the awards ceremony. Many of the teens who participate in these programs also have grown up in DCPA Education’s acting program. Offered quarterly, students as young as three years old may sign up for one of 400 classes. High school students, specifically, may take anything from improv and acting on camera to trapeze and Teen Company, in which they will stage full-scale productions. WHY HAMILTON HAS HEAT BY ERIK PEIPENBURG
I Hamilton, the megabuzzy bio-musical about Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers, opened to glowing accolades unlike any in memory. It received 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, and 16 Tony nominations, the most nominations in Broadway history. It won the Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. In his review, [New York Times theatre critic] Ben Brantley writes: “Yes, it really is that good.” 20
It’s one of the most talked about Broadway shows since The Book of Mormon in 2011. Why? It’s a theatrical rarity: a critically acclaimed work, written by a young composer, that’s making a cultural impact far beyond Broadway’s 40 theaters. That it’s told through the language and rhythms of hip-hop and R&B — genres that remain mostly foreign to the musical theater tradition — has put it in contention to redefine what an American musical can look and sound like. As Mr. Brantley wrote in his review of the show Off Broadway, the songs in Hamilton could be performed “more or less as they are by Drake or Beyoncé or Kanye.” Ethel Merman it ain’t. So what’s the story behind a show that’s become a Broadway must-see with no marquee names, no special effects and almost no white actors? Here, in six snapshots, is an explanation of why Hamilton is a big deal.
It’s a Genuine Smash Hamilton is on track to become one of the biggest critical and commercial hits in Broadway history. It won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama and a Grammy Award for best musical theater album. Other awards include the Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History and the George Washington Book Prize. [Creator Lin-Manuel] Miranda received a “genius grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The love isn’t just from theater circles. Mr. Miranda and several cast members performed at the White House, where Mr. Miranda freestyled for President Obama, and Michelle Obama, the [former] first lady, called Hamilton the “best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.” Mr. Miranda has appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and in Vogue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Hamilton is also a hit in the acting world, after the show’s producers agreed to share some of the profits with original cast members who performed in its development and first productions.

A Brief Hamilton History Mr. Miranda’s interest in Hamilton was sparked when he wrote a paper in high school about the 1804 duel between Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr, which reminded Mr. Miranda of oldschool rap rivalries. “It’s a hip-hop story,” he said in a 2012 interview. “It’s Tupac.” He was inspired to write a musical after reading a copy of Alexander Hamilton, a 2004 biography by Ron Chernow. After developing the work for a few years, in 2009 he sang a number from what would eventually become Hamilton as part of a night of poetry and music at the White House. Three years later, excerpts from “The Hamilton Mixtape,” a proto-Hamilton song cycle, opened Lincoln Center’s annual American Songbook series. The full-fledged Hamilton opened in February [2015] at the Public Theater to positive — no, glowing — reviews.

Diversity Led by a cast of mostly black and Latino actors, Hamilton has already helped challenge the perception that Broadway’s nickname as the Great White Way refers to the color of the actors onstage. “Our cast looks like America looks now, and that’s certainly intentional,” Mr. Miranda said.... “It’s a way of pulling you into the story and allowing you to leave whatever cultural baggage you have about the founding fathers at the door.” A story of immigrants, from creators who are the children of immigrants, Hamilton has contributed to the national conversation about immigration. A line from the show – “Immigrants/We get the job done” – gets such sustained applause that the pause that follows has been lengthened to allow time for the ovation to end.
A Hot Ticket Hamilton started performances on Broadway in July [2015], selling over 200,000 tickets in advance and bringing in almost $30 million. It has continued to be a box-office powerhouse, nipping at the heels of blockbuster musicals like Wicked and The Lion King to become one of the highest-grossing shows now on Broadway. Among the most high-profile audience members to see it at the Richard Rodgers Theater have been President Obama and his daughters, Sasha and Malia. An Off Broadway production that ran in 2015 at the Public Theater was an enormous success, selling out 119 performances. Celebrities from the world of pop music (Madonna), politics (Dick Cheney), books (Gay Talese) and Hollywood (Jake Gyllenhaal) flocked to see the show, which became one of the hottest tickets in New York. Conservatives were particularly smitten. “Fabulous show!” said Rupert Murdoch.

Hamilton isn’t the first time Mr. Miranda, who attended the elite public Hunter College elementary and high schools on the Upper East Side, has helped to bring nonwhite actors (and audiences) to Broadway. In 2008 he won a Tony Award for best musical for In the Heights, his show that featured Latin and hip-hop-inspired songs and choreography in a story about Latino families living in Washington Heights. In 2009 he translated some English lyrics by Stephen Sondheim into Spanish for the Broadway revival of West Side Story. (Some of the lyrics were later changed back to English.)
The historical accuracy of Hamilton was crucial for Mr. Miranda, whose interest in all things history extends not just to 18th-century politics but also to musical theater.... Ron Chernow, the historian whose Hamilton biography inspired the show (and who Mr. Miranda consulted for guidance), said Hamilton provides a convincing and “very interior look” at its title character. Mr. Chernow wrote in a recent T Magazine profile of Mr. Miranda: “I think he has plucked out the dramatic essence of the character — his vaulting ambition, his obsession with his legacy, his driven nature, his roving eye, his brilliant mind, his faulty judgment.” Some historians, many of them fans of the show, have nonetheless questioned its historical accuracy, asking if Mr. Miranda overglorifies Hamilton while glossing over less attractive aspects of his politics.
Hamilton has the potential to be a Broadway game changer thanks to its seamless integration of rap and storytelling. Hip-hop aficionados have taken note. Ahmir Thompson, who is also known as Questlove and is a founding member of the hip-hop band the Roots, recently said: “Watching the show I realized: ‘O.K., Lin-Manuel knows hip-hop. This guy has totally done his homework.’” No less a theater luminary than Stephen Sondheim, who knows his way around a lyric, is a fan of the musical achievements of Mr. Miranda, who has a degree in theater studies from Wesleyan University. “Rhyme does something to the listener’s perception that is very important,” said Mr. Sondheim, “and Lin-Manuel recognizes that, which gives the Hamilton score a great deal more heft than it might otherwise have.” This article was reprinted by permission of The New York Times.

DENVER LOCAL RETURNS IN HAMILTON Eaglecrest High School graduate Mathenee Treco is returning to Denver as Mulligan/Madison in the national tour of the hottest show in town — Hamilton. Originally from Nassau, Bahamas, he and his brother Gregory (who is the standby for George Washington and Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway and appeared in DCPA Theatre Company’s The 12) moved to Denver in the 1990s. “I am silly I’m so excited [to go to Denver with Hamilton],” said Mathenee. “Talking to my friends there, no one has seen the show. It’s going to be a really, really exciting opportunity for me to be in the show with everyone experiencing it for the first time in Denver. It’s where all of my best friends are. The people I grew up with are still there, and my extended family is still out there. I can’t wait. It’s probably going to be overwhelming!” Mathenee’s first experience with Hamilton was not driven by the frantic obsession that has overtaken the country; rather he tagged along at his brother’s insistence. “My brother was always like, ‘We have to go see this show.’ And I was like ‘O.K., whatever,’ and I remember feeling so stupid at the end of it because I was like, ‘This was the best thing I’ve ever seen!’ I remember crying like I’ve never cried before. I was in awe. And from there, [being in the show] just became a goal.”

After his brother attended a few workshops and readings of Hamilton on its journey to Broadway, he caught the fever. “One day I called up my little brother,” said Gregory. “We were both working at the same bowling alley and I said, ‘We have to take our lives in our own hands.’ So we got up at 6am and waited in line [at the open call]. We weren’t pursuing theatre at that time, that’s what’s so fascinating about it.” But auditions are intense, and competing against your own brother could lead to sibling rivalry. “There is this competitiveness that I think goes with your siblings,” said Mathenee, “but I always believe that what’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine. It wasn’t competitive, it was more collaborative. We were able to bounce ideas off of each other and jump into the work together. It got us both the job; that’s the cool part.” It got them both a part in the same show, but in different cities in different casts. “That is the funny thing,” said Mathenee. “My brother and I have almost the same story, and we’ve never ever done a show together!” Gregory added, “The pie-in-the-sky dream would be that I would be able to go out in March for the Denver engagement — where all our family and friends are — and do the show together. That would be the dream of a lifetime.”

CABARET & THEATRE COMPANY members mourned the loss of Daniel Langhoff, who appeared in Five Course Love, A Christmas Carol and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Daniel passed away at 42 from cancer. 4. EDUCATION announced the three finalists of its annual High School Playwriting Workshops & Competition. A full production of the winning play will debut this summer as part of Education’s Teen summer program, represented here by Alastair Hennessy and Celena Flippin. 5. BROADWAY made one wish come true when more than 70,000 Denver Broncos fans were treated to a performance of the national anthem by Anthony Murphy of Disney’s Aladdin.

Assist2Hear, a local Denver based company, is committed to helping persons living with hearing loss remain engaged in the arts community through professional design and installation of induction hearing loop systems in performing arts centers throughout the nation. Hearing loops are an innovative technology that brings the dialogue of a performance directly to the patron’s ear without the use of additional accessories. It entails a copper wire “looped” within a room, usually underneath the flooring. When connected to the room’s sound system, it transmits sound that is picked up by the telecoil in a person’s hearing aid or cochlear implant. The telecoil functions as an antenna directly linking the listener to the facility’s sound system. “It’s as if the microphone is speaking directly into the listener’s ear,” says CEO and DCPA patron, Erin Nichols. Assist2Hear was founded in 2010 when the former owner was seeking a solution to help her father hear better in an acoustically challenging church. At this time, she became aware of hearing loop technology, which eliminates the echo, reverberation and background noise that made it so hard for him to hear – all by simply using the telecoil program of his hearing aid. Since then, Assist2Hear has been instrumental in reducing barriers to the community for persons with hearing loss in more than 200 churches, theatres, and government buildings throughout Colorado and the Midwest. “We are so pleased to work with the DCPA,” continued Nichols, “to enrich lives through out community through our commitment to the DCPA’s arts education programs, which makes theatre accessible to students throughout the state. “Our mission is to help make theatre accessible for persons with hearing loss in our community,” shares Nichols. “In our work installing hearing loops in theatres throughout the nation, we see the tremendous impact accessibility to the arts can have on one’s life.” To locate a looped venue or learn more about how Assist2Hear can improve hearing accessibility for you or venues in your community, visit www.Assist2Hear.com.
