For the first time in our 40-year history, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has launched a public Capital Campaign to fund the most ambitious project in our facility master plan — the renovation of the Stage and Ricketson theatres, overhaul of backstage and support areas, and the redesign of the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex lobby. Many of you sitting in The Buell Theatre today may be unfamiliar with our Bonfils Theatre Complex. It is situated on the northwest corner of the Arts Complex campus and houses four intimate theatres that serve as the home of our Tony Award-winning Theatre Company. Produced locally, these plays and musicals welcome more than 150,000 patrons each year to ground-breaking new works, timeless classics and breathtaking musicals. Called “A Grander Opening,” this extensive renovation project will enable our artists’ imaginations to soar, inspire students’ creativity and welcome guests to stories that reflect their lives. By preserving these facilities, exceeding accessibility standards and equipping the spaces with new technological advances, we will continue to provide worldclass theatre experiences in world-class facilities. In describing the $36 million project, DCPA Chairman Martin Semple announced 100% participation by the Board of Trustees valued at $8 million, including a lead gift from Marvin and Judi Wolf. Additionally, $19 million will be allocated from the General Obligation Bond funds, placing the DCPA at 75% to the total project goal. On June 5, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) launched its first-ever public Capital Campaign. Called “A Grander Opening,” the effort will finance the $36 million overhaul of the Stage and Ricketson theatres, their backstage areas and the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex lobby. In kicking off the campaign, DCPA Chairman Martin Semple announced 100% board participation including a lead gift from Marvin and Judi Wolf. After its theatrical debut nearly 40 years ago, one has to ask: Why? Why does this show never seem to lose its luster? Is it the pathos? The action? The drama? The deep well of sentiment (as opposed to sentimentality) on which it draws? The pervasive heroics and genuine heroism of the piece? The answer is all of the above, as well as producers — chiefly Cameron Mackintosh — who are good at keeping the production strong and fresh. But hang on to that word heroism. In this second decade of the 21st century there is a hunger within for genuine heroes or, as Maya Angelou so wisely put it, she-roes. Les Miz has more than one of each, whereas our modern world is pretty much devoid of larger-than-life characters. It is a world where the late Joseph Campbell found “every last vestige of the ancient human heritage of ritual, morality and art…in full decay.” Strong condemnation, but it is true that we have lost our dragon-slayers. We re-invent them in comic strips, on YouTube, film and television — or substitute a cult of celebrity in their steads. Thin gruel by comparison. The English language classifies hero as masculine, but Angelou was more than half-right. The word is in fact derived from a woman’s name: Hero, the legendary Aphrodite who threw herself into the sea when her lover Leander drowned swimming the Hellespont just to be with her. Granted, that was more of an emotional than a moral response, and not all of Webster’s definitions of heroism are particularly exalted. The one that comes closest to paydirt is this: “Bravery, nobility, fearlessness, valor.”

Apply these words to Les Miz and you feel the richness — in Jean Valjean’s innate nobility and valor; in that half-pint Gavroche’s fearlessness; in Fantine’s bravery in the face of overwhelming odds, or Eponine’s readiness to take a bullet if it can save Marius for whom she has an unrequited love. It’s even evidenced in the final act of Inspector Javert who can no longer bear to live with what he has become. In the end, it is the totality of author Victor Hugo’s massive canvas that works — the contradictions of its operatic scope and its intimate humanity in a marriage of social, political and emotional upheaval with intensely personal stories of private pain and struggle. And what stories they are. Not content to spin strictly subjective tales, Hugo wanted his entire world to reverberate through his writing. He said he wanted to be the écho sonore or “loud echo” of his day. Although he ostensibly belonged to no church, a religious thread frequently ran through his work. He claimed Les Miz as “religious.” But it is an eloquent compassion, wedded to innate wisdom and a sense of balance that are at the core of the grandeur of his prose. Les Misérables was a very long book, full of plots and subplots, and took years to complete, but it was only following the accidental death by drowning of his grown daughter Léopoldine — a terrible blow — that he immersed himself in earnest into the writing of it. Memories of his daughter probably informed the character of Cosette, just as memories of his own student days informed that of Marius. Aside from his phenomenal agility with language, Hugo’s

an ambience of mystery, his operatic characters, the quest for justice where none exists, the depiction of a people in revolt, all contribute to this modern attraction. Jean Valjean may have all the earmarks of a hero but he goes them one better: he is a flawed, deeply injured and profoundly moral man who, in his vulnerability and compassion, becomes the idealized model of a person with whom we all want to identify. French playwright Paul Claudel called Hugo’s vision his “panic contemplation” of the universe. Writer Léon Fargue called him “un poéte d’avenir” or a poet of the future. That future is now and Hugo’s masterwork remains as fresh, provocative and rousing as ever.

BEAUTIFUL — THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL In 1959, 16-year-old songwriter Carole King stepped across the threshold of 1650 Broadway and a legend was born. Beautiful (playing The Ellie Caulkins Opera House Sep 4–9) tells the story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Highlights from her career include: At James Madison High School, Carol Klein changed her name to Carole King and made demo records with her thenfriend Paul Simon (of future Simon and Garfunkel fame). At Queens College, King met Goffin, who became her songwriting partner. Their hits included: • “Take Good Care of My Baby” for Bobby Vee • “Chains” covered by the Beatles • “Pleasant Valley Sunday” for the Monkees • “The Loco-Motion” for Little Eva • “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for Aretha Franklin King recorded “It Might As Well Rain Until September” herself. This was her only hit during the 1960s. King collaborated with James Taylor on “You’ve Got a Friend” — a #1 hit when Taylor performed it. In 1971, Carole King released Tapestry. The album was #1 on the Billboard Charts for 15 weeks and remained on the list for more than six years. Later in her career, King collaborated with music legends such as Joni Mitchell, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Branford Marsalis. King is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

genius was a transcending talent for getting to the universal through the particular, weaving the smaller human tales into the sociopolitical fabric of his day. Les Misérables was published in 1862 and took France and all Europe by storm. It was immediately translated into several languages. The author was astounded by the novel’s success. Even if people rarely plough through its almost 2,000 pages anymore, it remains his bestknown work, largely because its popularity has been re-ignited by the musical’s charismatic appeal. Toward the end of the novel, Hugo writes this: “The book which the reader has before him at this moment is, from one end to the other, in its entirety and details...a progress from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from falsehood to truth, from night to day, from appetite to conscience, from corruption to life, from bestiality to duty, from hell to heaven, from nothingness to God…” So much for the lofty ambitions of the book. But one cannot discount the contributions of the team that created the musical, from bookwriter Alain Boublil’s ability to condense and adapt such a massive epic for the stage, to Herbert Kretzmer’s superlative English translation of the original French, to the stirring anthems by Claude-Michel Schönberg who created a score that seems drawn from the novel’s rib. More than 150 years after the novel’s publication, we still thrill to this account of an escaped convict’s struggle for a chance at redemption because its sensibility is true to any age. Hugo’s gift for evoking

There’s much more to the title of Emilio and Gloria Estefan’s hit Broadway bio-musical than meets the feet. Yes, On Your Feet! features one of the most infectious catalogues in popmusic history. There are few audience members the rhythm isn’t going to get…out of their seats. But On Your Feet! is not just an invitation to get up and dance, producer and husband Emilio Estefan says. It is a call to action. “The reason we called it On Your Feet! is because you can be rich, and you can be famous, but you have to get back on your feet many times throughout your lifetime,” Estefan told Applause. Fans of the couple who have been so abundantly blessed might not realize the harrowing obstacles the Estefans have faced over the past six decades as they have risen from penniless Cuban immigrants to proud realizers of the American Dream. In 1990, Gloria broke a vertebra in her back when the bus carrying her husband and band collided with a tractor-trailer on a snowy mountain highway in Pennsylvania. After a four-hour surgery to implant rods in her spine, doctors told Gloria she would never walk properly again. But a year and a miraculous recovery later, she embarked on a world tour. Soon after came the birth of her second child. And that’s why the Estefans’ musical takes its title from one of Gloria’s biggest hits.

“That was a time when we were on top of the world. But then Gloria had to start all over again,” Emilio said. “Instead of complaining, we got back on our feet. Our attitude about life is that when everything is going negative we convert it to positive — and I think that’s a great mindset for all people to have.” That might sound easy coming from Estefan in 2018. After all, he has produced hits for Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jon Secada, Ricky Martin, Shakira and many more. He’s been nominated for 42 Grammy Awards and won 19. He’s made hit movies such as Madonna’s Evita and Three Men and a Baby. He owns restaurants, a hotel and piece of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. He’s won the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Next month, he and his wife will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. “You definitely have to be 100 percent in love to stay married for 40 years,” Estefan said. “If you want to spend your life with a person, you have to respect that person and admire that person. I consult with Gloria on everything. She’s been my best friend, and the best mother. I think with time, you just love the person even more.” On the surface, the Estefans appear to have it all — and they would agree. But none of it has come easy. COSTUME COLUMN OKLAHOMA! Making his Theatre Company directorial debut, incoming Artistic Director Chris Coleman is giving a fresh take on the classic musical Oklahoma! (Sep 7-Oct 14) by Rodgers and Hammerstein by casting an all-black ensemble. “When I first started thinking about doing this show, I came across a piece of information that blew me away: In 1907, the year before Oklahoma became a state, there were 50 all-black towns in the state, and a third of all cowboys were black,” said Coleman. “And that fact began to work its way into my imagination.” From 1855 to 1920, African Americans pioneered Oklahoma and many settled together in all-black communities. Because of this, Oklahoma garnered a reputation as a kind of “promised land” among African Americans, providing refuge from the racism and brutality of other racially mixed towns in the U.S. Set against the backdrop of a rivalry between local farmers and cowboys, audiences will enjoy Rodgers and Hammerstein’s quintessential American musical about a cowboy named Curly and his love for a farm girl named Laurey. From the title song and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” to “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” this local production will include all of the traditional trappings that have allowed Oklahoma! to stand the test of time while presenting an overlooked piece of American history.

It’s a real story about a family going through a lot of hard times and then paying back.” When Estefan first visited Sony, in fact, “they would never even let me go upstairs,” he said. Eight years later, he was the company’s president. “And that’s when I signed Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony and everybody else,” Estefan said with a laugh. The Estefans set out to tell their story on Broadway in 2015, he said, “as a way of thanking this county for all of the opportunities it has given to Gloria and me.” The score includes all the songs Gloria made popular, including “Get on Your Feet,” “Conga,” “1-2-3” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.” But it also includes lesser-known songs that enhance the telling of the onstage story, such as “Famous” and an original song called “If I Never Got to Tell You” that Gloria wrote with daughter Emily Estefan. “When the show opened in New York, I would say most of the people in the audience were minorities,” Estefan said. “But you know something? When we opened in Holland, I saw people dancing and crying at the same places in the play. “I think that’s because this is not a story about fame. It’s a real story about a family going through a lot of hard times and then paying back. We made a promise many years ago that everything we do, we do to pay back this country. Batista, fought for the U.S. at the Bay of Pigs and in Vietnam, but upon his return was diagnosed with a paralyzing form of multiple sclerosis — possibly as a result of exposure to Agent Orange. Gloria spent much of her teenage years as his primary caregiver while her mother worked. “Childhood was such a bad time for Gloria, and her father died so young,” said Emilio, who himself fled Havana for Spain at age 14. “When you leave Cuba, the only thing you’re allowed to take is what you have on. But the only thing I wanted was to live in freedom.” The two met in Miami in 1975, and their rise in the pop-music world is the stuff of legend. Emilio was a sales manager for the rum dealer Bacardi and the percussionist for a band called the Miami Latin Boys. He met Gloria at a wedding the band was playing, and a few weeks later Emilio asked her to be the lead singer. By 1980, they formed Miami Sound Machine, which five years later would become Latin music’s first enormous crossover hit, not only in the U.S. but throughout the world. And again — it wasn’t easy. Those running the music industry thought Estefan’s brand of fusion-pop was too Cuban for Americans and too American for Cubans. “When I went to Sony with our first crossover album, they told me to take all the horns and percussion out,” Emilio said. “But I said, ‘I don’t want to copy what is on the radio,’ and the guy told me, ‘Go back to your country.’ I said, ‘This is my country. I am an American!’ ”

Students from high schools all over the state of Colorado gathered at The Buell Theatre on May 24 for the Denver Center’s sixth annual Bobby G Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre. More than 42 schools representing nearly 100 students were nominated, spreading the love from Greeley to Parker to all sorts of towns named Springs: Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs and Colorado Springs. In all, a record 13 schools won at least one award. Denver School of the Arts was awarded Outstanding Musical for its production of In the Heights, Elisha Horne of Vista PEAK Preparatory School in Aurora received the Outstanding Leading Actor award for his performance as The Baker in Into the Woods and Abby Lehrer was named Outstanding Leading Actress for her work as Eponine in Castle View’s production of Les Misérables. The Outstanding Actor and Actress went on to represent Colorado in the national Jimmy Awards in New York on June 25, which celebrates the best of high school musical talent across America. 5

Last year, Denver Center for the Performing Arts Education launched theCOLUMN Theatre for Young COSTUME Audiences program to provide opportunities for our youngest audience members to experience live theatre for the first time. Over two months and 99 performances, nearly 20,000 Denver area PreK through 3rd grade students, educators and families — 79% of whom attended on a full or partial scholarship — experienced the Caldecott-winning The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Ezra Jack Keats. “Arts education allows children to connect their experiences to stories on stage and participate in activities designed to engage their imagination, critical thinking and socio-emotional intelligence,” stated Allison Watrous, Executive Director of Education. This fall, audiences will be treated to one of the most beloved children’s books of all time as Corduroy springs to life on the stage. Based on the books Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy by Don Freeman, Corduroy is a heartwarming comedy about a teddy bear patiently waiting on a department store shelf to find a home, and Lisa who thinks he’s just the teddy bear for her. Follow Corduroy’s delightfully rollicking chase in this tender, enduring story about true friendship and the lengths we go to find it this fall in The Conservatory Theatre (Oct 5 – Dec 9) including a sensoryfriendly performance on Oct 22.
