Faculty-Led Embedded Programs The Embedded Program numbers below represent the last full year of programming (AY 20182019) prior to the cancellation of all Spring and Summer 2020 embedded programs due to COVID19. The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences operated 3 Faculty-Led Embedded Programs during AY 2018-2019. Total program leaders = 6 Total program participants = 35 Faculty-Led Freestanding Programs The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences has operated Faculty-Led Freestanding programs in the past; currently there are no active programs.

International Agreements in the College of EMS Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) has 24 active agreements, two (2) pending agreements, and two (2) recently expired agreements. Agreements marked with an asterisk (*) are AESEDA agreements. Agreements marked with a plus sign (+) are International Internship in Materials (IIM) program agreements. IIM is a Department of Material Sciences and Engineering (MatSE) program that provides students with summer research internships. Penn State typically hosts international students, but the agreements include the option for Penn State students to visit the partner institutions. Since 2019, EMS has provided the following feedback in response to our Annual Reports: Active Agreements 1.ACMAD MOU AESEDA 2020 – African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development* (Niger) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 2.AIR Centre MOU 2018 – Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre)* (Portugal) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2018 and will expire in 2023. 3.Cabo Verde MOU AESEDA EMS 2020 – Government of Cabo Verde* (Cabo Verde) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 2019 ARIA: Greg Jenkins has met with the leadership of INMG and is planning to renew the agreement. This agreement is also listed under the AESEDA report; more information will be available there 4.Cape Verde Univ MOU AESEDA 2020 – University of Cape Verde* (Cabo Verde) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 5.CAR MOU AESEDA 2020 – Centre for Atmospheric Research* (Nigeria) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 6.Dalian Jt Ctr MOU 2016 – Dalian University of Technology (China) MOA creating the Joint Center for Energy Research (JCER). Agreement was signed in 2016 and expires on Oct. 25, 2021. (See comments, attached as pages 5-8.) 7.Erlangen-Nuremberg IIM MOA EMS 2019 – University of Erlangen-Nuremberg+ (Germany) MOA signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. 2019 ARIA: Per Susan Sinnot, there are no updates regarding this agreement and we can let it lapse. (This was a pending agreement so it could not lapse.) 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic

8.Henan Polytech MOU EMS 2019 – Henan Polytechnic University (China) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2019 and will expire in 2024. 2020 ARIA: Per Shimin Liu: “Our collaboration between HPU and PSU is very active and we have regular discussions on the related collaboration projects, including the CO2 fracturing of coal, gas transport in stressed coal, coal geomechanics and effective gas drainage from complex coal seams like Yangquan coal mine field. We are actively collaborating on paper publications based on the research findings. Currently, a few publications are in progress and we will keep the university informed on the future progress.” 9.Limoges IIM MOA EMS 2018 – University of Limoges+ (France) MOA was signed in 2018 and expires in 2023. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 10.Namibia MOU EMS 2020 – University of Namibia* (Namibia) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2021 and will expire in 2026. 11.Padua IIM MOA EMS 2019 – University of Padua+ (Italy) Agreement signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 12.Padua MOU EMS 2019 – University of Padua+ (Italy) Partner insisted upon signing a general MOU simultaneous with the IIM MOA. Agreement signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 13.Tohoku MOU EMS 2019 – Tohoko University (Japan) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2019 and will expire in 2024. 2019 ARIA: This program is described as “fits very well with EMS and we hope to make it a mainstay”. 2020 ARIA: We are still very supportive of the Tohoku University programs. Several students were lined up for this year but unfortunately activity was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. We expect to regain interest and activity in the programs once things open up and have a proposal in consideration at NSF that would involve sending one undergraduate and one graduate student to Tohoku University for several weeks if funded and when travel is possible. 14.Tokyo Inst Tech IIM MOA EMS 2018 – Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) Agreement signed in 2018 and expires in 2023. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 15.Tundavala MOU EMS 2020 – Tundavala Polytechnic Institute* (Angola) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2021 and will expire in 2026. 16.UAM MOU AESEDA 2020 – University Amadou Mohtar* (Senegal) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 17.UASZ MOU AESEDA 2020 – Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor* (Senegal) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025.

18.Uni Staff Doctorate Program MOA EMS 2019 – University of Cape Town et al. (South Africa). Projectspecific MOA signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. An EMS faculty member (Brian King) is jointly supervising Ph.D. candidates from several South African universities. 2019 ARIA: The ten PhD staff member have been selected by the University of Cape Town and have begun their studies at their respective institutions. One scholar is visiting Penn State during the fall semester 2019 to interact with Penn State faculty in support of their training. 2020 ARIA: We hosted visiting scholar Nemapate Ndivhuwo in the fall semester, and have continued to participate virtually with their training sessions, including one in August 2020. 19.Univ Mining Leoben IIM MOA EMS 2019 – University of Mining Leoben (Montanuniversität Leoben)+ (Austria) Agreement signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. 2019 ARIA: 6/6/19 we sent email indicating that we do not wish to proceed through EA and would like to proceed on the basis of the standard IIM program agreement. Faculty members from the department of Materials Science and Engineering attended a conference at Montan Universitat Leoben in May and a delegation of faculty from Montan Universitat Leoben will visit Penn State August 26-28 2019. Next steps will be discussed then. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 20.Univ Mining Leoben MOU EMS 2018 – University of Mining Leoben (Montanuniversität Leoben) + (Austria) General MOU signed as a show an intention to work towards the IIM MOA. Agreement was signed in 2018 and will expire in 2023. 2019 ARIA: A MOA is being developed as part of the IIM program. A delegation of faculty from Montan Universitat Leoban will visit Penn State August 26-28, 2019. Next steps for the MOA will be discussed then.Forging connections with additional EMS departments will also be discussed. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 21.USSEIN MOU AESEDA EMS 2020 – University of Sine Saloum El Hadj Ibrahima Niasse* (Senegal) General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2020 and will expire in 2025. 22.Vietnam Nat Mus Nature MOU EMS 2020 – Vietnam National Museum of Nature (Vietnam) MOU-like agreement signed to support collaborations regarding biodiversity resources in Vietnam. Signed in 2020 and expires in 2025. 2020 ARIA: the MOU is still in negotiation regarding the final wording. With a successful field trip in January which then led to the MOU discussions to formalize the relationship, the project is off to a great start 23.Wuhan Univ Tech 311 MOA EMS 2019 – Wuhan University of Technology (China) Agreement signed in 2019 and expires in 2024. 2019 ARIA: We had one student, Yang Hu, come to Penn State from WUT and carry out research. She was interested in getting the accelerated M.S. in MatSE but the timing of her visit (4 March 2019-3 March 2020) did not allow her to pursue this 12-month degree. I will attend the World University Forum on Materials Science and Engineering Leadership in Wuhan, China, October 9-11, 2019, and expect to have further discussions about next steps with respect to our MOU. 2020 ARIA: exchanges are currently on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic 24.Zhejiang IIM MOA EMS 2020 – Zhejiang University+ (China) Agreement signed in 2020 and expires in 2025.

Pending Agreements 1.INTEC AA MOA EMS Engr 2019 (Inactive) – INTEC – Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (Dominican Republic). This articulation agreement expired in 2013 but students have continued transferring to Penn State as though it is still in effect. Partner is asking that a valid agreement be signed. This articulation agreement covers degree programs in both EMS and Engineering, and course mapping/syllabus reviews across two colleges have been slow. 2020 ARIA: EMS is working with College of engineering on renewing an articulation agreement with Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo 2.ISCED MOU AESEDA 2021 – The Institute of Higher Educational Sciences* (Angola) Expired Agreements 1.Hanyang MOU EMS Engr 2015 – Hanyang University (South Korea). General MOU facilitating graduate student and faculty exchanges, etc. Agreement was signed in 2015 and expired in 2020. 2019 ARIA: Agreement is not active and can be allowed to expire. 2.Malaysian Univ Sabah LOI EMS 2015 – Malaysian University of Sabah (Malaysia) LOI signed in 2015 and expired in 2020. 2019 ARIA: Agreement is not active and can be allowed to expire.

2020 Comments regarding Dalian University of Technology (Active #6) and the Joint Center for Energy Research Professor Michael Janik, Professor of Chemical Engineering, is now Director of the Joint Center for Energy Research (JCER), as of July 2020. Please allow us to briefly update you with the historical development of the JCER as an university-wide inter-institutional effort. Penn State leaders decided to develop a strategic partnership with selected institutions in China as a part of Penn State strategy for the global engagement (GEN) in 2009-2010. With the assignment by Penn State leaders (Dr. Eva Pell as Senior VP for Research, Dr. Michael Adewumi as Vice Provost for Global Programs and Dr. Henry Foley as Vice President for Research (after Dr Pell moved to Washington DC) following their visits to Chinese institutions, and with the encouragement and support of EMS Dean Bill Easterling, COE Dean David Wormley and IEE Director Tom Richard, I led the Penn State efforts starting 2009 to develop, and then serving as the director for, the first international Joint Center for Energy Research for which PSU-DUT letter of intent to collaborate (LOI) was signed in 2009, MOU signed in 2010 and MOA for the JCER signed in 2011 by both institutions with the opening ceremony at Penn State’s Nittany Lion Inn on April 12, 2011 participated by the presidents, vice presidents or vice provost along with participating college leaders and faculty members of both institutions. Around 15 faculty members from each institution have participated in the JCER collaboration. At the end of the first 5-year agreement (2011-2016), both institutions saw JCER as a mutually beneficial collaborative partnership, and agreed to renew/extend the agreement for another 5 years (2016-2021). In 2016, Dr. Michael Adewumi, Dr. Neil Sharkey and Dr. Tom Richard agreed to co-sponsor JCER and signed the MOU renewal with DUT for the next five years (2016-2021) based on the university policy, with the endorsement/support from Deans of EMS and COE. The Office of Global Programs at Penn State has all the records for all of these agreements. Penn State-Dalian JCER has organized six (6) Joint Energy Workshops held at both Penn State (2011, 2017) and DUT (2010, 2012, 2016, 2018) with participating faculty members and leaders from both institutions. As an example, attached is the program for the Joint Energy Workshop held at Penn State in Nov 2017, along with a Penn State news article. JCER has catalyzed the collaborative fundamental research between faculty members at Penn State (EME, EI, MatSE in EMS college, ChE, ME and CEE and AE in COE) and their active counterparts in DUT. 16 Penn State faculty members have participated in PSU-DUT JCER activities and one or multiple visits to DUT for collaborative research under the support of JCER at PSU and DUT.

The following Penn State faculty members have participated in JCER activities including visits to DUT and discussion with DUT faculty members for research and education: Bruce Logan (CEE, COE), Mike Janik (ChE/EI, COE), Sarma Pisupati (EME/EI, EMS), Donghai Wang (ME, COE), Jim Freihaut (AE, COE), Andy Kleit (EME, EMS), Lei Zhen (EME, EMS), Phillip Savage (ChE, COE), Robert Rioux (ChE, COE), Jonathan Mathews (EME, EMS), Semih Eser (EME/EI, EMS), Xiaoxing Wang (EI, EMS), Xiaoliang Ma (former EI faculty), and Yongsheng Chen (former EME faculty), Moses Ling (AE, COE), and Chunshan Song (EI/EME/ChE, EMS/COE/IEE). More faculty members, beyond the above listed along with Penn State leaders at university and college levels participated in the Joint Energy Workshops and meetings with DUT visitors at Penn State including Drs. Neil Sharkey, Eva Pell, Hank Foley, Michael Adewumi, Rob Crane, Tom Richard, Justin Schwartz, Anthony Atchly, and John Hellmann, and faculty members who met with DUT faculty members (but have not actually visited DUT). PSU-DUT JCER collaborative research activities have resulted in publication of collaborative research in over 150 referred journal articles since 2011, as one can see from Web of Science using both “Penn State Univ” and “Dalian Univ Technol” for the search of journal publs since 2011. Dr. Janik has participated in all the Joint Energy Workshops since 2010 and is among the most productive Penn State faculty members for publishing high-quality joint papers based on his collaborative fundamental research with DUT faculty and students.
