WELCOME After 5 years away… GreenFleet is back in the North East! Welcome to GreenFleet NORTH EAST at the home of Durham County Cricket Club, the Emirates Riverside stadium Staged in partnership with the North East Combined Authority (NECA), and sponsored by Alphabet, this is the forum put together to help the region’s fleet operators understand more about the Electric and Plug-in Vehicle (EV & PHEV) market, and establish if this ever-evolving technology can be integrated into their everyday transport operations. The NECA and its authorities have underlined their commitment to improving air quality across the region, and the North East is at the forefront of Low Carbon Vehicle adoption. Between 2010-2013, 1,163 electric vehicle charging points were installed in the region as part of the Plugged-In Places project. The project was responsible for developing the UK’s first regional rapid charge network. The NECA have received funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles and are applying to the European Regional Development Fund to construct two Go Ultra Low filling stations and up to eight clusters of 2 or 3 rapid chargers which will benefit the growing number of EV users in the North East. As a result we now find ourselves at the beginning of a new “Clean Vehicle Revolution” and today’s event will allow you to make an ‘educated decision’ as to whether electric, plug-in and/or hybrid powered vehicles have a role to play in your everyday transport operation. So, let’s start that here today, at GreenFleet NORTH EAST! We have been able to bring you this event, thanks to the help and support of the NECA, together with Alphabet and the other sponsors you will meet here today. We have been fortunate to gather support from key players in the sector so that you can discuss your individual requirements and ensure that all your questions are answered. If it is information on grants, future government policy and the way forward, we have the Department for Transport’s OLEV (Office for Low Emission
Vehicles) on hand. Today’s event will give you that crucial ‘Touch, Taste, Feel’ experience, thanks to BMW and MINI, Nissan, Toyota and Lexus, and LDV. Please also make sure you talk to Alphabet, one of the UK’s leading leasing companies for EVs and PHEVs. And be sure to talk to motoring journalist and EV owner, Quentin Willson, who will happily share his own knowledge and experiences with you, and will be joined by the NECA, OLEV and charging specialists. SPEAKERS Quentin Willson, TV Presenter and Motoring Expert TV presenter and motoring expert Quentin Willson is perhaps most widely known as the presenter of the motoring programmes Fifth Gear and the original incarnation of Top Gear. Since early 2011, Willson has been the national spokesman for FairFuelUK campaining for lower government fuel duty, and has been involved in the push towards lesser polluting vehicles for some time.
Stephanie Edwards, Head of Strategy, OLEV Stephanie Edwards is Head of Strategy at the UK Office for Low Emission Vehicles, the central Government team which is spending over £600 million out to 2020 to promote the uptake of ultra low emission vehicles in the UK. Stephanie oversees the Go Ultra Low communications campaign and is developing the Government’s long term strategy to ensure all new cars and vans are zero emission by 2040. Prior to this role, Stephanie worked for the British Embassy in Beijing for 3 years, where she helped UK companies maximise business opportunities across China.
Tobyn Hughes, Managing Director (Transport Operations), NECA Tobyn Hughes has been the North East Combined Authority’s Managing Director for Transport Operations since January 2015. In this role he leads Nexus, the body responsible for providing high quality integrated public transport services through the Tyne and Wear Metro system, Shields Ferry, bus, ticketing and information services. Tobyn is leading the bid for new Metro rolling stock and expansion of the system, and has recently launched ‘Pop Pay As You Go’, a smartcard that can be used on the Metro and a growing number of bus services. He also plays leading roles in ‘Rail North’, the newly created body that is responsible for improving local rail services across the North of England, Transport for the North, and the Urban Transport Group. A Newcastle University graduate, he has over 20 years’ experience working in aviation, bus and rail transport.
Mike Holleran, Public Sector Account Manager, Alphabet Mike has been in the Fleet Management industry for 31 years. He has worked for Alphabet for 12 years following the merger of ING Car Lease and Appleyard Vehicle Contracts prior to that. Mike has been a member of the Public Sector Account Management Team for 6 years and has extensive experience in sales and account management in both corporate and public sector. Mike has a practical, hands-on approach to account management and excels in creating and maintaining a strong business relationship. Using his knowledge and experience he is able to offer solutions and alternatives to achieve cost savings for the customer. A recent overview of a customer fleet resulted in a £25k rental reduction.
Carl Nicholson, Fleet and Asset Manager, North Somerset Council Carl Nicholson is the Fleet and Asset Manager for North Somerset Council since 2006, he has extensive knowledge of Fleet Management within the public sector and is on a charge to convert the entire light car and van fleet to zero emissions by 2020 as part of the OLEV Go Ultra Low City scheme for the South West. Recent projects include the transfer of the growing council owned charge point network to alternative an supplier, to support its fleet of 30 EV’s.

North East Combined Authority The North East Combined Authority (NECA), is a legal body that brings together the seven councils which serve County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Now we have moved the technology forward in a second generation model which can cover double the distance – more than 30 miles – and achieve much higher speeds in all‑electric, emissions-free driving.
