A Message From the CITY MANAGER

Happy New Year Palm Springs!

As we look back on 2025, I am reminded once again of the strength, creativity, and resilience that define our community. In a year marked by both challenges and triumphs, Palm Springs has shown how deeply we care for one another and how proudly we can rise together, especially in the face of adversity, including overcoming a terrorist attack that tested us but did not break us.

2025 also brought moments of discovery and connection that captured the very spirit of our city. During October’s Modernism Week, ONE-PS introduced its first-ever historic walking tour, giving residents rare access to hidden gems in downtown Palm Springs. ONE-PS is already looking forward to its 17th Annual Picnic & Expo on March 21, 2026.

Our future is rising as well. The new College of the Desert Palm Springs campus is taking shape at an inspiring pace, turning an ambitious vision into a regional hub for innovation, education, and opportunity. With groundbreaking programs, including the nation’s first community-college casino management degree, this $405.7 million investment will expand our workforce and strengthen key industries when it opens in fall 2027.

In 2025 we also celebrated meaningful progress in caring for some of our most vulnerable residents. The opening of Aloe Palm Canyon has delivered muchneeded affordable senior housing, giving valued members of our community stability, dignity, and a place to call home. At the same time, coordinated efforts across the region have contributed to a measurable drop in homelessness, a hopeful sign that when we

work together with purpose and compassion, real change is possible.

At Palm Springs International Airport, progress continued as well. Passenger totals have nearly doubled over the past decade, and yet the airport has preserved the relaxed, open-air experience travelers cherish. In a featured Q&A with Executive Director of Aviation Harry Barrett, Jr., residents can learn how this remarkable growth is being balanced with the qualities that make PSP unique. With the Airport Master Plan guiding sustainable, flexible improvements over the next 20 years, we are preparing for tomorrow without losing the charm that makes Palm Springs like no place else.

And, perhaps most joyfully, the city celebrated the reopening of the beautifully restored Plaza Theatre, an iconic historic landmark returned to its rightful place at the heart of our cultural life. The ribbon-cutting honored years of collaboration, while the community open house and block party filled the street with music, celebration, and shared pride. Cynthia Erivo’s spectacular opening night gala delivered a performance we will not soon forget, and I look forward to many more evenings of brilliant performances in this extraordinary space.

As we move into 2026, I am filled with optimism. Our accomplishments in 2025 remind us that when we come together, we can continue to build an inclusive and welcoming city that not only honors its past but boldly embraces its future as we all work to move Palm Springs forward!

An extensive remodel by local interior design superstars Desert Society transformed the 1950s deco-style building into a funky time machine in which patrons discover a swirl of a space where midcentury modern meets slick ‘70s glam. The gelateria features terrazzo flooring, space-age ceiling tiles, its cheeky “Lips On Legs” pinup wallpaper, a rotating disco ball to accompany the pulsating soundtrack, a 1963 vintage vespa scooter to take selfies on, and an iconic “Life is for licking” neon sign.

In the 1920s, Lazy C Ranch first operated as a stagecoach stop along the Pacific Crest Trail. Chad Haggar purchased the property in February of 2013 and has been steadily renovating it to build it up to what it is today. A working horse ranch that’s also home to goats, sheep, chickens, and miniature donkey Biggie, the ranch has six units for short-term rental and aims to provide a serene setting for people to enjoy a rustic getaway while still being close to everything Palm Springs has to offer.

Why Palm Springs? “We’ve been dreaming of a new location in Palm Springs for years,” says owner Ryan Jones. “So many people from the Bay Area have made the move to the desert, some in second homes and others full-time, especially in the last five years. So, we knew we’d have brand recognition here that we wouldn’t find anywhere else. The vibe and community spirit of Palm Springs is a perfect fit for Hot Cookie. With a steady flow of visitors from California and all over the world, it’s an ideal spot to introduce Hot Cookie to a broader audience!"

The Ranch also hosts large and small weddings, corporate retreats, and family reunions in its modern, open-air barn space accommodating up to 200 guests for dinner and dancing. The pool is located where the historic spring serving wagon trains once stood, and boasts multiple cabanas, not to mention a ghost town replica replete with an old west saloon and gaming hall with arcade games and a billiard table.

Why Palm Springs? Haggar has fond memories of visiting Palm Springs as a child and teen. He jumped at the chance to own a piece of Palm Springs history. “There’s just an inclusive vibe here where people can be free to enjoy nature while also experiencing great food and entertainment close to Los Angeles and Orange County,” he says, “while feeling like a world away.”

Located inside the Palm Springs Art Museum, LIVS Palm Springs brings fresh energy to the local dining scene with a welcoming space where food, art, and community converge. The venue came together at a time when Chef Gabriel Woo (of Bar Cecil, The Barn Kitchen at Sparrows Lodge, and Holiday House fame, to name but a few) and his wife Jackie had just welcomed their daughter Olivia to the world. That’s where the name “LIVS” comes from.

A lot of the brightness and cheerfulness of the space also comes from the joy of a newborn child. Jackie has a keen eye for design and came up with the idea for a flowered mural and gingham pattern on the walls all done by local artist Aaron Hansen. LIVS is open Thursday through Monday, with extended hours on Thursday nights when the museum offers free admission. It specializes in rich espresso blends, smooth cold brews, and a thoughtfully crafted menu of breakfast and lunch favorites. It’s also an ideal space to hold a special event, with full catering services available.

Why Palm Springs? Gabriel and Jackie LOVE Palm Springs. Chef Woo grew up here and remembers a time when downtown was empty. He decided that it would be his mission to one day open restaurants that became destinations for great food experiences.

Why Palm Springs? “I spent my childhood coming down here and love the downtown area,” says owner Brett Michaelson, whose original is the State Street Axe Club in Santa Barbara. “There are great restaurants, shopping, and bars. Unfortunately, once it gets dark there aren’t many options for activities and things to do besides grab a drink. We are located right in the heart of downtown and will be open late night. It’s the perfect place for date night, family fun, birthdays, bachelor/ette parties, corporate events and a night out with friends.”

ONE-PS Unveils New Historic Walking Tour during October Modernism Week

Several Hidden Gems of Historic Downtown Palm Springs Were Revealed During a Modernism Week – October Walking Tour Presented by ONE-PS

“Our goal was to give the public access to historic sites that are not typically open or easily visible,” says Tim Schoeffler, Organized Neighborhoods of Palm Springs (ONE-PS) board vice chair and tour organizer. “These included the historical La Plaza shopping center, with its second-floor chauffeurs’ quarters and shop girls’ quarters dating back to the 1930s.”

ONE-PS typically offers a tour of midcentury homes during the annual event, but changed it up this year with its first-ever walking tour, blending in some landmark sites from the 1920s and 1930s.

Stops included the O’Donnell Golf Club, American Legion Post 509, Temple Isaiah, and the Welwood Murray Cemetery, where attendees learned about the long history of these Palm Springs institutions.

“These are sites that date back in most cases to before midcentury modern took Palm Springs by storm,” Schoeffler says. “We wanted to give an overview of pre-World War II developments that truly put the city on the map. We told the story of Nellie Coffman and Julia Carnell, as well as Tom and Dr. Winifred O’Donnell and others who were instrumental in establishing Palm Springs as the international destination that it was prior to the 1940s.”

One of the highlights at the O’Donnell Golf Club was a visit to the casita built in 1936 for O’Donnell, one of Southern California’s most prominent women osteopaths. In addition to maintaining offices in Los Angeles and Long Beach, she used the casita as her Palm Springs medical office.

“Both the tour guides and docents really dove deep into the history of each location, and the response was fantastic,” Schoeffler says. “The ONE-PS volunteers were invaluable to the tour’s success.”

ONE-PS, which represents the city’s 52 organized neighborhoods, also hosts an annual picnic and community expo. Its 17th annual event is scheduled for March 21, 2026, at Ruth Hardy Park.

The Legendary Nelda Linsk Honored as “First Lady of Modernism Week” This February

Beloved longtime Palm Springs resident and local icon Nelda Linsk will be honored during the upcoming Modernism Week, running from February 12 to 22, 2026. The internationally acclaimed 11-day festival highlights midcentury and modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture, and will offer more than 450 unique experiences.

Since she first arrived on the desert scene in 1962, Nelda has long been an influence on Palm Springs culture, architecture, fashion, art, and interior design. She is best known for being famously immortalized in the iconic Slim Aarons photograph “Poolside Gossip.”

Several Modernism Week activities this February will honor Nelda’s decades-long communitywide influence. Festivities will include a free a kickoff event, and the rededication of Nelda’s star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars on February 12. Nelda first received her star in 2018 at a ceremony sponsored by Modernism Week, where attendance records were broken. On the anniversary of that special day, Modernism Week will rededicate Nelda’s star by adding the title “First Lady of Modernism Week” to the granite tribute. A celebratory crowd and an array of special guest speakers will convene at 11:00 a.m. at 155 South Palm Canyon Drive to

honor Nelda with her new title.

Later in the week, a program entitled “This is Your Life, Nelda Linsk” will take place in the Annenberg Theater on February 19 at 3:00 p.m. This captivating review of Nelda’s amazing life and career will feature appearances by multiple special guests and pay homage to every aspect of Nelda’s life and contributions to Palm Springs.

Finally, don’t miss the special screening of “Poolside Gossip: More Than a Photograph” on February 21 at 11:00 a.m. This rarely screened interview-style film tells the endearing story of Nelda and her husband Joesph as they hosted society photographer Slim Aarons at their home, the Edgar J. Kaufmann Residence, designed in 1946 by Richard Neutra. Attendees will hear about Nelda’s fascinating life leading up to the iconic 1970 photograph, including amusing behind-

the-scenes anecdotes from that legendary shoot with Aarons. This very special event includes a Q&A following the screening, and an intimate meet and greet with the incomparable and still ultra-glamorous Nelda! You won’t want to miss this uniquely one-of-akind Modernism Week event.

Rising From the Desert: College of the Desert’s Palm Springs Campus Takes Shape

You can see the changes in the construction as you pass by the site, taking shape with remarkable momentum as the future College of the Desert Palm Springs Campus rises steadily from the desert floor. What was once only an ambitious vision is now becoming a landmark of innovation, education, and regional collaboration.

More than a traditional learning environment, the Palm Springs Campus is poised to be a game-changer, a hub for cutting-edge programs supported by stateof-the-art facilities, advanced technologies, and the unmistakable Palm Springs identity.

Its mission is to expand access, strengthen partnerships, and create new opportunities that align with the region’s evolving economic landscape.

At the heart of the project are goals that reach far beyond academic achievement. The campus will expand the local labor force in high-demand sectors such as sustainable technologies, hospitality and culinary arts, architecture, film, media, and digital arts. Through collaborations with businesses, institutions, and community partners, it will support new jobs, new skills, and new pathways to success.

In line with its focus on industry-driven innovation, the campus will also be home to the nation’s first casino management degree offered at a community college. This pioneering program would support one of the region’s most significant economic sectors and open new pathways into gaming and hospitality careers.

This $405.7 million investment in the region is more than infrastructure; it is a catalyst for economic vitality and educational opportunity. As construction progresses, the vision grows clearer: a vibrant, accessible, innovative campus designed for the future.

The Palm Springs Campus is being shaped with purpose, collaboration, and a bold vision for the Coachella Valley’s future. It will open in the fall of 2027.

In addition to enhancing the new spaces, contributions will seed an endowment that ensures sustainability, innovation, and continued access for future generations. Gifts at all levels contribute to a lasting legacy of literacy, lifelong learning, and the realization of a world-class library accessible to all. To spark early momentum, the library’s board of trustees has pledged a $1 million match, doubling every donation until the match is met. With $875,000 already committed by local supporters, the campaign is building energy quickly.

The renovation will breathe new life into

the iconic 35,000-square-foot main library, originally designed by midcentury architect William F. Cody, along with the adjacent JC Frey Building. Significant and important architectural elements will be restored, and the space will be reconfigured to meet the needs of future generations. Plans call for expanded and purpose-built spaces, including a flexible community room, quiet study rooms, a reimagined children’s area that includes a family outdoor patio, a modern maker space, a dedicated teen center, and outdoor garden spaces that celebrate our desert setting.

Private donations will ensure these elements — shaped through extensive community input — are included in the initial construction phase.

Meet Palm Springs International Airport Executive Director of Aviation Harry Barrett Jr.

PSP has grown significantly over the past decade. What stands out most when you look back?

I’m most proud of the progress we’ve made while staying true to the experience people love. Our annual passenger totals have nearly doubled in 10 years and continue to grow. The region is attracting more visitors and residents, and airlines are continuing to invest in this market. Through all of that, we work hard to protect the easy, open-air feel that defines this airport. That balance is important to me, and it reflects a lot of hard work from the entire organization.

How is that growth shaping PSP’s next chapter?

We are in a new era for the airport. Growth gives us the opportunity to modernize our facilities, strengthen our infrastructure, and improve reliability throughout our guests’ journeys. We are moving forward with passion and purpose, and we’re focused on thoughtful improvements. Everything we do is driven by our mission to deliver unforgettable hospitality.

The airport’s master plan is a key effort. What should people know about it?

The master plan is our long-term roadmap. It looks 20 years ahead and identifies the facilities, technology, and airfield improvements that will help us meet future demand. It is also flexible. We are marching toward a clear vision, but it can evolve as the region grows, as travel patterns change, and as new opportunities or challenges emerge. PSP has recently announced several new flights. What excites you most about the air service outlook?

We are seeing strong interest from airlines. This season we are welcoming new service to Santa Rosa on Alaska, Austin on Delta, Newark on United, Charlotte on American, and Austin again this spring on Southwest. Each of these routes reflects confidence in the Coachella Valley. I always remind travelers that starting a trip at PSP, even when it includes a connection, helps us show airlines that demand is strong. They make decisions based on that data. Flying PSP and not Ontario or LAX directly supports new destinations and helps turn seasonal service into year-round service — we hope people will remember that when booking their next trip.

What guides your leadership at PSP?

My background in the United

States Air Force and in public aviation taught me the importance of preparation, teamwork, and service. Those principles guide how I approach every day here. I believe in a people-first mindset. My role is not only to lead, but also to be a resource for our team so they have what they need to succeed. When our employees are supported and empowered, they are able to deliver the level of unforgettable hospitality our guests expect.

What do you enjoy most about working at PSP?

Serving the residents and visitors of this valley. This airport is often the first or last impression someone has of Palm Springs. Helping make that experience smooth, welcoming, and memorable is a privilege and an honor. PSP is improving each and every day, and I am grateful to be part of its future.
