Active living guide highlights recreation programs Summer edition includes options for children, adults and seniors
City of Powell River’s parks, recreation and culture department has released its digital Summer Active Living Guide, with registration opening Monday, June 1, at 8 am. The guide includes programs for children, youth, adults and seniors, along with community events planned throughout the summer. Sydney Stonehouse, the city’s new sport and recreation program coordinator, says she is excited to take on the role after growing up in the qathet region and working at the recreation complex since she was 16. “I am passionate about building inclusive, culturally appropriate and welcoming spaces for everyone,” explains Stonehouse. “The complex is a shared community hub, and my goal is to ensure all participants feel supported, represented and encouraged when participating or spectating any activity.” Community recreation offerings this summer include themed summer camps, mini adventure camps and horseback riding camps. Adults can take part in programs such as Fishing 101, table tennis and pickleball. An introduction to flag football development camp will also run weekly, Monday to Wednesday, throughout July. The program is designed for beginners and will focus on speed, agility and basic skills. Stonehouse says the summer lineup has been designed to offer something for BEAUTIFUL FAMILY HOME 7166 Kemano Street

a range of ages and interests. “Whether you’re registering your child, exploring a new hobby or building practical skills, there’s something for everyone,” she adds. Aquatics programs will include training through the Lifesaving Society. Tami Wood, aquatic programs supervisor, says they are intended to help participants build confidence, leadership and lifesaving ability. “Anyone looking to develop these skills can join us for training through our affiliation with the Lifesaving Society,” adds Wood. The Bronze Star program, offered in July, is an optional step toward becoming a lifeguard. It introduces foundational rescue skills and fitness, and is intended for tweens who have completed Swimmer 6 and are under age 13, or for those preparing for the Bronze Medallion course in August. The Waterfront Lifeguard course is also available for candidates who already have pool certification. The course prepares participants to supervise openwater environments such as lakes and beaches, while developing rescue, risk management and response techniques. Wood says people interested in lifesaving programs should register early as space is limited. The health and fitness department is offering several classes. “We’re excited to bring back many of RANCHER + SHOP

our fan-favourite drop-ins, including a variety of strength classes, Seniors Wellness, Chair Yoga and Zumba,” says Melissa Parsley, interim health and fitness program coordinator. Outdoor registered programs will include Drums Alive at the Rotary Pavilion and Pilates in the Park at Loggers Memorial Bowl. Parsley says outdoor programs are a way for residents to stay active while enjoying summer weather. The department is also seeking enthusiastic new fitness instructors, with postings expected as opportunities arise. Two returning special events are planned for the summer. Canada Day celebrations will take place at Willingdon Beach on July 1, beginning at 3 pm, with speeches from local dignitaries, live music on the stage and ending with fireworks. Families can expect bouncy castles, face painting, food trucks and market stalls throughout the afternoon. The free Music in the Park concert series will also return to Willingdon at 7 pm on July 15 and 29, and August 12 and 26. The full Summer Active Living Guide, including schedules, fees and program details, is available at powellriverprc.ca. Residents can register online, by phone at 604.485.2891, or in person at the recreation complex. Updates will also be posted on the department’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
