Two Powell River swimmers and one coach are part of the Special Olympics BC team that will be heading to the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, from August 11 to 15, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Melissa Furlotte will be coaching, and Lynn Hilton and Erika Barker have been selected and have qualified for the aquatics competition in the games. “Special Olympics works on a four-year games cycle,” said Furlotte. “These ladies swam at the provincials last year in Prince George and had enough high-level finishes to qualify for the nationals for Team BC.” Furlotte said Hilton and Barker have been swimming a minimum of once a week to train and they go to the gym as well. They also participate in other sports. Furlotte said part of the qualification was having to attend a swim meet sometime during the year, and one was hosted in Powell River.
