Smart and sustainable By KYLIE WILSON NESTLED in a quiet rural setting on the outskirts of Wangaratta, the home of Kylie and Steve Murphy and their family not only affords comfortable family living, but is sustainable and energy efficient. Long committed to living a sustainable lifestyle, the Murphys will be opening their home, completed only last year, for the nation’s annual Sustainable House Day on Sunday, September 11. Kylie said that for the family, who previously lived in Kilmore, the construction of the home was a personal endeavour. The land was purchased in 2011, and the family moved to the area in 2013 and lived together in the living quarters of the property’s shed while Ovens and King Builders Wangaratta constructed their home. Kylie said that the home was designed to be a long term family dwelling and last her and Steve long into retirement. “We wanted to be able to retire and enjoy this block,” she said, stressing that living in a sustainable and energy efficient manner was very important to her family. “We also wanted to avoid paying high energy bills unnecessarily, and knowing that we’re not blowing resources.” Kylie urged anyone interested in sustainable living to come and visit the home. “It’s really good for people to see the different ways you can do sustainable living,” she said. The home is orientated to make the most favourable use of sunlight at all times of year, with Steve having calculated the size and height of the windows to maximise sunlight while minimising glare.
