WANGARATTA teen Debra Klima-Everingham has returned home after spending 12 months in Brazil. The 18 year old who left for her trip on January 18, 2019 and returned last month, is now fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and has a year of memories to last a life time. “My Mum has travelled a lot and has always talked about the places she’s gone so I got the excitement for a different lifestyle and take on everything from her,” Debra said. “One of Mum’s friends from work told me about the Rotary program so I went through an interview and application process and asked to go to South Korea, Canada or Japan because I was learning Japanese and South Korean at the time and I like Canada. “However, because I was a late applicant, I only got the choice of Switzerland, Taiwan or Brazil and initially I was pretty upset I didn’t get my choices. “Within my first month though I was so happy; I lived with four different host families for three months each and my first experience was in a tiny apartment in a cramped city, plus I didn’t know any Portuguese so it was tough.
