Chasing waterfalls By KYLIE WILSON IT is less than 20 kilometres from the heart of Wangaratta, but when you sit below the looming and craggy rocks and listen to the rushing water of Brien’s Gorge Falls, it feels like another world away. The water rushes down over the rugged hillside before seeming to disappear into an underground spring, while tall trees and foliage surround you in this little pocket of the park. Located at Warby-Ovens National Park, at the foot of the Warby Range, the waterfall is just one of several in the area which Parks Victoria district manager Dan McLaughlin said has been brought to life. Other main waterfalls in the park include Pine Gully and Salisbury Falls, and Mr McLaughlin said that with the winter rains this year having been heavier than they have been for many years, many falls have been flowing nicely and are expected to flow at least until summer. He said rain has also seen water flows in many dormant gullies and creeks. “The rain over winter is really important for the area and provides refuge for animals over summer, particularly for kangaroos and wallabies,” Mr McLaughlin said. He has been with Parks Victoria for around 12 years and said he relishes being able to work in the diverse outdoor environments of the North East. “Being out in nature is a fantastic bonus of the job,” he said. “There’s something special about the Warby Range. “We don’t notice how awesome these things are on our own doorstep.”
