◆ ACCOMPLISHED: Mieke Boynton has captured landscapes from all over the world during her photography career.
By KYLIE WILSON HER life and work has taken photographer Mieke Boynton across Australia and all over the world, but the North East is where she feels most at home. Her early years were spent in Myrtleford and Porepunkah, including attending Marian College, before heading to boarding school in Melbourne in Year 10. After school, she spent four years studying literature in America under a rowing scholarship, before returning to Australia to teach. In 2008, she moved to Wyndham in the Kimberleys to teach indigenous students. Whenever she got a spare moment, she explored the natural wonders of the region, taking pictures of the stunning surroundings, and Mieke said that is the moment she fell in love with photography - and with the Kimberley region. “I went everywhere and took photos of everything,” she said. “The colours were nothing like I’d ever seen before. “It felt like arriving in Eden.” She then requalified as a librarian before spending time working at the Kimberley Land Council in Derby and managing the TAFE Library Services in Broome, all the while spending her spare time taking photos and selling her works at local markets. Eventually, she took the leap to become a professional photographer and has not looked back since, moving back to the North East a year and a half ago.
