FOR Wangaratta’s Paul Camilleri, growing up in Adelaide didn’t have many places to go digging for gold or other treasures, so he spent his time playing football, surfing or fishing instead. But in 1978 at the age of eight, Paul’s father took him to the goldfields of Maryborough, Victoria and his love of finding buried treasure was born. Paul has been detecting seriously for about four years, and loves to head out with mates, Troy Tobias and Mick Stanton, to do some fossicking, with Paul’s wife extremely supportive of his hobby. “Meredith is always quick to ask me when I’m leaving when I mention I might go ‘out for a while’,” Paul laughed. “I love the thrill of the chase and the anticipation of what I might find. “I get a real buzz when I dig up an old coin or relic which might be 200 or more years old and I love to wonder about the story and people behind it. “We’ve found some really cool stuff so far,. “My favourite things to find are World War I medals and medallions. “I found a Returned From Active Service badge (RASB) from 1917 in a Glenrowan paddock. “We contacted the National Archives of Australia (NAA) in Canberra to see if they could help us reunite it with the soldier’s family, but unfortunately they couldn’t find who it belonged to, even though the serial number was on the back of the badge. “I found a Cartwheel penny too, which is a rare English coin from 1797. “These coins are huge and made from copper, they were the first copper pennies to be circulated in Britain. “I don’t know how you’d lose one as it’s 36mm in diameter and weighs one ounce (28 grams).” Paul has also found an old trade token for the Mansfield Hotel at Eldorado.
