Natural inspiration
By BELINDA HARRISON
GROWING up on her family’s farm in Byawatha gave local artist Lisa Bishop not just a deep love for nature, but inspiration. “My Dad was a shearer and I remember sitting in the wool clippings and trying to draw him in all the positions a shearer gets into and the way the fleece would drape around his feet so beautifully,” she recalled. In her teen years, her drawings took on darker, fantastical elements inspired by heavy metal music with dragons, blood, death and gore taking centre stage. “My Mum hated going into my room when it was covered in all those images,” Lisa admitted with a laugh. Luckily for her mother, Lisa’s paintings eventually became softer and she focused more on the gentler fantasy side, completing several murals in Melbourne with fairies and wonderland themes. “I lived in Melbourne for 10 years, working as a beauty therapist, where I got to be creative,” Lisa said. “I became well-known for my nail art and body painting, and won the Australasian Nail Art competition three years in a row.” When Lisa and husband Steve moved back to the area to start a family, they built their home on Lisa’s parents’ farm near “Rosie,” a Yellow Gum named after Lisa’s grandmother. “It was Nanna’s favourite tree and is well over 100 years old,” she said. “When she passed away, we named it after her.
