LAST century, in times of world turmoil, anxious women awaiting news of loved ones, or travelling soldiers wanting to reassure their partners and families, would often send silk or textile postcards to each other. The intricately stitched declarations of love would be treasured by the recipient and often carried everywhere, and the creation of the pieces was a source of income for many women struggling to cope in war torn countries. A century after World War 1, local stitchers and others from across Victoria and South Australia have used the format to explore the concept of war and conflict in a new exhibition as part of Wangaratta’s upcoming Stitched Up Textile Festival. It’s a triumph for June Brown of Milawa, who came up with the concept that a group of textile artists could make a postcard a month for 12 months reflecting on the Anzac commemorations and display them collectively during the festival. Word spread, and the concept resonated with more than 40 different textile artists. “The conditions were simple – the postcard sized art could reflect on any war or peacekeeping mission over the last 100 years and wasn’t restricted to an Australian perspective,” said project coordinator Kathy Beilby. “Many of the participants researched their own family histories while others took a general view.” continued page |
