AT Yarrunga Primary School, bikes are known as ‘freedom machines’. The focus on the two-wheeled transport has extended to the school using bikes rather than buses to travel to excursions - and even the creation of a jumps track for student use. Principal Fran Waterman said the developing bike culture was exciting, and students were strongly invested in it. Youngsters have been encouraged to tackle bike-related projects such as bike art and t-shirt design, and jumped at the chance to develop the track on the school’s White Street campus. Grade five/six teacher Matt Lorback said the school arranged for delivery of a couple of trailerloads of dirt, and space was provided for students to work on building the jumps track, which is gradually taking shape. “This term they’ve been out there every day; we give them class time two or three times a week as well as recess and lunchtime to work on it,” he said. Mr Lorback said the track could “chop and change” according to the children’s decisions. “It’s involved teamwork, collaboration and all that kind of learning, as well as the physical skills required to build and test the jumps,” he said. “They built something the other day and found there were spots that didn’t work when they rode them, so it has been a learning curve.
