Hitting all the right notes

ZOE Matthews has packed a lot into her 22 years pursuing a love of music from an early age. It’s taking her to great heights in the local industry while fitting in university studies, which last year took her on a four-week internship to Uganda. Enjoying growing up in Beechworth on a small property where she was close to nature, Zoe has fond memories of attending the local primary school followed by secondary education at Wangaratta High School where a love of singing and a great school band were both discovered. When she is not studying, Zoe can be found singing and playing the keyboard in the band Stacks, which hit the top of the charts with two songs released earlier this year and more recordings to follow. Their debut single ‘Restless’ is a song about frustration with repetitive routine and old habits, and learning to take up space as a woman in a world that tells us to be quiet and amenable. Restless reached number 18 on the Triple J Unearthed charts and number six on the Indie charts. Their next recording ‘Rant Song’ - a catchy duet about house sharing - scored number 21 on the Triple J Unearthed charts and number 12 on the Indie charts. The musician, singer and songwriter attributes her musical passion to her parents who encouraged her to play the piano and started lessons when she was five years old. She enjoyed learning and playing the clarinet in later years too. “I grew up going to concerts with my mum and dad and was greatly influenced by their love of live music, and was also inspired by the music they liked too,” she said.
