A year to remember By BELINDA HARRISON
WHEN Cate Looney applied for a job at Brown Family Wine Group (BFWG) in 2005, she couldn’t have imagined she would be nominated, let alone win, Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA) in 2020. Completing a Bachelor in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, Cate combined her studies with working in the university’s commercial winery before moving onto Scotchman’s Hill Winery in Geelong. “It was a great training ground to be able to study to be a winemaker and then put what I was learning into practice at the same place,” she said. “I was working at Scotchman’s Hill when I saw the position at Brown Brothers advertised. “I knew the brand and reputation within the industry so I applied, and happily I got the job and moved to North East Victoria for my first vintage in 2006.” In 2016, Cate was promoted to senior winemaker and has become a leader in Moscato winemaking in Australia. She oversees the day to day operations of the 20,000 tonne Milawa winery and has been the driving force behind the Patricia and NonVintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay wines, which are two of the most awarded sparkling wines in Australia.
