WINE TALK WITH

ANITA

FOR many of the people living around Winton Wetlands, it is not just a home – they are connected to the land and the lifestyle. And more and more people are helping make positive change to their local environment through the Friends of the Winton Wetlands (FOWW) group, established in 2013 to help support the development of the wetlands. Wendy Sherlock has been a member since the beginning. “We just thought it would be a good idea to promote – and have a bit of community fun – on the wetlands,” said the active group secretary. Wendy has been passionate about the area and its continued sustainability since her childhood spent living there, where scarcely a day would pass without her spending time birdwatching, riding her bike or simply spending her days outdoors. While she moved away from the district for several decades, she has once again settled in the area and continues to enjoy many of the pastimes she enjoyed in her youth – and her trusty birdwatching binoculars are never far away. Since being involved in the group she has taken part in revegetation programs, biodiversity campouts, stargazing nights and more. Wendy said there are countless things she finds fascinating about living at the wetlands. “The wetland ecology – understanding the wetting and drying cycles; changes in bird life, plant life and aquatic species; and there’s amazing reptiles out here as well,” she said. “I love the landscape, the connection to the Warby Range and the Chesney hills.” Wendy said being involved with the group not only connected her with like minded people, it had also helped her make friends with members of a range of community groups in the region. continued page |
