It’s easy being green with this smoothie Green Greenie smoothie THIS colourful smoothie, which serves one and packs in four to five grams fibre per serve, is a great way to start the day and get a boost of folate and vegetable iron. This recipe was supplied by Bowel Cancer Australia. For more healthy recipes such as this one, see www.bowelcanceraustralia.org.

Lasting change, one step at a time THE closing days of each year are often when people’s thoughts turn to self improvement and New Year’s resolutions, with many hoping to work harder to reach their goals in the year to come. For a lot of people, everyday life gets in the way, or the enormity of the task before them can seem too daunting to continue. But Wangaratta woman Jess O’Neill is living proof that moderation, consistency and commitment to training pays off, and that every little bit of effort helps. Jess said she first became determined to address her overall health in October last year, to keep up with toddler son Alexander as well as wanting to expand her family with husband Tim. She began with home workouts and dietary changes, but soon realised she wanted to ramp up her efforts, and joined Wangaratta YMCA. She took part in their Retrain the Brain program, which is based on mindset, nutrition and exercise, and has been working with health and wellness specialist

Vanda Bisignano ever since. Jess said she now concentrates on cooking much more nutritious meals for herself, Alexander and husband Tim – with more carefully controlled portions - as well as getting to the gym up to five times a week and taking various classes, including circuit and boxing classes. Since making her lifestyle change, she has lost around 20kg, and said that she has felt the benefits of improving her health and nutrition in various ways, including having increased stamina for her work in the retail industry. “My energy levels are definitely further up,” she said. “I’m keeping up with my life in general, and my overall mental wellbeing is better.” She added it was great to have the energy to chase after Alexander. “I love being able to run after him,” Jess said. She said ongoing positive lifestyle change needs ongoing commitment, but that people should not be discouraged if they craved the occasional treat or takeaway meal, as moderation and flexibility is the key.

Vanda and Jess’ tips for healthy lifestyle change: x Don’t be afraid to try something new, but be aware of your personal limitations; x Create the habit first and your goals will follow; x Make small steps or changes at first to ease into your new lifestyle, and don’t place huge amounts of pressure on yourself;

Teamwork | Vanda Bisignano and Jess O’Neill have been working together to help Jess pursue her ongoing health goals. PHOTO: Kylie Wilson

x Be mindful and as nutritious as possible with your food choices, but remember “everything in moderation”;

x Start with realistic goals and work towards having a supportive environment around you; x If you have injuries or other issues, most exercises can be modified to suit your circumstances – just ask your instructor or trainer.

Work on better communication at Christmas By Diana Bienvenu, Wangaratta Audiology

CHRISTMAS is a great time for family and friends to gather together, as it is a time when we can catch up with people we have not seen recently. It is important that everyone be included in these activities, even if they happen to have a hearing loss. What can we do to improve communication with our loved ones who have a hearing loss? Firstly, ensure the person is ready to get the message and watching the speaker. All of us get involved in our own thoughts from time to time. If we are not listening, we will not get the message. Clear speech at a comfortable listening level is really important. When a person is wearing their hearing aids, it is helpful to speak at a normal level – correctly set hearing aids amplify voices to the right level for that person. Also, please keep in mind it is helpful to speak a normal pace, not too fast or slow. Reducing the level of background noise will assist anyone with a hearing loss to hear better. It may be helpful to set aside some oneon-one time to catch up with someone you see infrequently. Then, if it is really noisy when all the family is around, you will already have had those meaningful conversations. It is much harder to have a good visit

Children, health and food a balancing act FAMILY meals can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the day, although they can also be utterly challenging and stressful. What kids eat and don’t eat can be very emotional for the parents and children. Children use food as emotional leverage, as do parents. A parent himself, Christos Miliankos from North East Naturopathic Group is all too familiar with the struggles parents face. “We lead a very busy life with lots of kids’ sports and activities, though we generally enjoy sitting at the table for an evening meal together. “We hover between making new healthy foods to our easy family favourites like gluten free pasta with a homemade tuna, garlic and tomato sauce, or one of their all time favourites is our simple rice meal – everyone loves that one. Christos said that people can try the recipe for themselves at www.mynaturopathchristos. com/recipes/kid-friendly-rice-meal/. He added that serving size control is essential. “We usually put a good sized children’s helping but not too much, he said. “Generally, our food rule is they don’t have to eat it if they are not hungry – though there is nothing else available to them until the next meal. “Other rules we sometimes use are ‘you can choose one thing on the table not to have’.

Breaking Bread | Members of the Miliankos-King family and their friends enjoying themselves over dinner (from left) friend Jamie McGann, Yasmina and Toby Miliankos-King, Kieran Mair (a friend visiting from Malaysia), Kalika Miliankos-King, Jiva Nair (another friend visiting from Malaysia), Zoi and Emilio Miliankos-King. “What I have found though is that consistency is the key. He added that he has learned over the years that children are dictated to by their stomachs and will always eat eventually. Christos said that when it came to feeding the family, he always tried to be as healthy as possible, although occasional treats are allowed, and rules are relaxed to a certain degree when they are spending time with grandparents, although lollies and soft drinks

are consumed minimally due to their lack of nutritional value. “I didn’t want to have to fight with them, so I made a rule that they were allowed to choose whatever they wanted when out with others though if it was soft drinks or lollies then they had to pay $1 into the ‘dentist jar’ to help pay for our dentist bills. “It generally seems to work and because the oldest ones were saving up for an iPod they didn’t want to lose money so they chose

mineral water, juice or chocolate. Christos’ advice to parents is to take things one step at a time. “Let’s take the negative emotion out of it, he said. “Food is to be enjoyed as nourishment and the social connectedness that it brings. Bon appetit. For more information, see Christos at North East Naturopathic Group at 29 Baker Street, Wangaratta or call (03) 5722 2889.

Let Michelson’s create your smile this summer

HOW do you rate your smile from a scale of 1 to 10? If you answered below 10, there may be something you are not satisfied with. A smile is generally one of the first things a person notices. Have you tried using whitening to get a brighter, beautiful smile and feel like it’s not what you were looking for? If you don’t like the look or feel of plates and want something natural and permanent in your mouth, there are options for a total makeover, or a budget friendly alternative. Michelson’s Dental Surgery are here to help. “Here at Michelson’s, we have been recreating smiles from top to bottom,” explains practice manager Allie. “We use a dental-facial aesthetic approach to complete smile makeovers for our clients. “Our dentists and hygienist have a trained eye for detail and can tailor a treatment plan that not only accounts for your teeth and gums, but to compliment your face. “Our clients leave our doors grinning from ear to ear now that they have realised it is possible to have the ‘Instagram smile’. “At Michelson’s, our professional dental team work together to offer dental

treatments from orthodontics (braces); crown and bridgework; whitening, aesthetic fillings; veneers; implant restorations; and even anti-wrinkle treatments.” The staff can arrange for a discrete consultation with experienced dentists and hygienist who will comprehensively assess your teeth, gums and face using photographs, x-rays and models to predictably achieve your desired results. “No patchwork dentistry, no Band-Aid solutions, no mismatched fillings,” Allie said, “just smart, comprehensive treatment with a team of dental professionals who work with you to your goals.” These treatments are now more accessible to clients as Michelson’s are offering flexible payment arrangements with MediPay. If you like what you see, pop over to their website at www.michelson.com.au for more information, or call to speak to one of their friendly receptionists to book your spot now and let them show you the possibilities of fulfilling your dream smile. For more information, head to Michelson’s Dental Surgery at 24 Templeton Street, Wangaratta or call (03) 5721 8033.

Managing and treating pain OVER the years Barb Binks at PhysioCare Wangaratta has had many clients present to the clinic with odd symptoms. Some examples of these have been: a swollen hand which is very painful and changes colour from white to red to blue for no apparent reason, unexplained hair growth, rough nails and shiny skin. Some years ago Barb attended a workshop run by Dr David Butler, a physiotherapist with the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute, and suddenly these strange symptoms which were seemingly unrelated to the clients’ original injury were explained, and better still, in most cases managed well and full recovery achieved. Pain is normally felt when the brain needs to warn us of tissue stress or injury. This can cause us to react to withdraw from an irritative focus, such as pulling your hand away from a hot surface, or make us

Barb said that unfortunately, sometimes the brain can begin to send signals to indicate danger and can cause increased sensitivity, pain sensation and physical responses.

Identification, diagnosis and management of this type of pain requires an experienced clinician. “Special techniques can be used that many clients find a bit weird but when performed can alter pain perception, reduce swelling and change skin colour as well as a range of other

things,” Barb said. “Stimulating the skin, using mirrors and thinking exercises are some of the techniques that we use at PhysioCare Wangaratta to manage these issues.” If you have pain you can contact them on (03) 5721 5874.

Help to face life’s challenges GOING through a divorce is one of the most stress-inducing life events that you can go through. If you are lacking in support networks, or even if you just want advice from an impartial third party, you can go to Wangaratta woman Sarah Whitechurch, who runs My Divorce Coach Australia. As a divorce coach, counsellor and psychotherapist, she works from a place of empathy to help families and individuals work through major life changes. She is an internationally certified divorce coach, and has diplomas in community welfare and professional counselling, as well as in clinical hypnosis and psychotherapy. “When going through a separation, being in a state of conflict can feel constant and overwhelming,” she said. “A really important factor in being able to make clear decisions and be heard is to remain calm - easier said than done when life as you knew it has been turned upside down and you are faced with challenges that are unexpected or planned for.” Some key things Sarah recommends to keep your cool when you still have to communicate with your ex/soon-to-be-ex are: ̽ 6HOI FDUH Do something regularly to nurture yourself. Whether you are the one who left or who was left, ending a long term relationship is one of the most challenging times in your life. Get back in touch with the things that nurture your soul, whether that is sport, going out with friends or simply a soak in the tub. ̽ .HHS \RXU IHHOLQJV about your ex and your separation off social media. It doesn’t actually credit you in any way – in fact it can do the opposite and add fuel to the fire. When things cool down, you may not feel as strongly as you did when you vented publicly and you really don’t want that used against you or permanently recorded for all to see. ̽ 7U\ WR NHHS WH[W PHVVDJLQJ WR D PLQLPXP ̰ HVSHFLDOO\ LQ WKH HDUO\ GD\V PRQWKV Texts can be misread and cause you to react rather than respond. ̽ 6WD\ IRFXVHG If you need to, write down your main points before having the conversation to help you stay on point. When tension and emotions are high, it can be very easy to fall into the blame-trap or an argument cycle. Stick to your main points and if you feel yourself going off track, remind yourself of what you hoped to achieve during the conversation. ̽ %H RN ZLWK ZDONLQJ DZD\ If the conversation is getting heated, end it respectfully and arrange to try again another time. ̽ 5HFRYHU\ WDNHV WLPH Remember, it can take up to three years to fully begin to recover from a separation. This is a marathon not a sprint. Increasing activity can have major health impacts A NEW report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) shows that small increases in our levels of physical activity could have major positive health impacts for the whole population. The report, Impact of physical inactivity as a risk factor for chronic conditions: Australian Burden of Disease Study, looks at the health impact—or ‘burden’—of a lack of physical activity in terms of years of healthy life lost through living with an illness or injury, or through dying prematurely. Using data from 2011, the report found that 2.6 per cent of the total disease burden in Australia was due to physical inactivity. “And when physical inactivity is combined with overweight and obesity, the burden increased to nine per cent - equal with tobacco smoking, which is the leading risk factor for disease burden in Australia,” said AIHW spokesperson Michelle Gourley. But the impact could be significantly reduced with just small changes to our levels of physical activity. “We found that if everyone did an extra 15 minutes of brisk walking, five days each week, this would reduce disease burden due to physical inactivity in the population by about 13 per cent,” Ms Gourley said. This amount of activity could be achieved by taking a walk on your lunch break, or getting off the bus or train a few stops earlier. “And if the extra activity rose to 30

minutes, the burden could be reduced by 26 per cent.” The benefit would be felt especially among those who are currently sedentary, as well as those aged 65 and over. Physical inactivity was associated with seven diseases in this study. The diseases most closely linked to physical inactivity—and which stand to gain the biggest reductions in burden from increased levels of physical activity—are diabetes (for which physical inactivity was responsible for 19 per cent of the burden), bowel and uterine cancer (16 per cent each), and dementia (14 per cent). Physical inactivity was responsible for 11 per cent of the breast cancer and coronary heart disease burden, and 10 per cent of the stroke burden. Overall, the burden of physical inactivity is higher among people in lower socioeconomic groups, with people in the lowest group experiencing rates of burden at 1.7 times that of the highest group. Earlier this year, the AIHW released analysis showing that as little as a three kilogram reduction in body weight could significantly reduce the burden of obesity.

A quick walk at lunchtime is a positive step towards reducing physical inactivity.

Are your gums making you sick? Keeping your gums healthy is good for your teeth and your whole body. Recent medical research has shown that healthy gums are very important to your general health. Scientists have discovered a relationship between periodontal (gum) diseases and the occurence of serious health problems like cancer, heart attack and stroke, uncontrolled Type II diabetes and premature birth of babies. In addition, bone and tissue destruction caused by untreated gum infection can cause loss of your teeth. So detecting and treating periodontal disease can be a life-saver.

But periodontal diseases are hard to detect by yourself and require professional treatment. Your dentist must check your gums regularly for signs of infection and tissue damage. Great Alpine Dental’s Dr Dipen Shah is trained and experienced at diagnosing periodontal disease and providing advanced therapies, to help get your gums back to good health. Not acting on periodontal disease can put you at risk of serious health problems. You owe it to yourself and your family to keep your gums healthy - and we’re here to help.

Good care of your gums is vital to your health.

Empowering people to take charge of their bodies “PERSONAL, passionate and professional” embodies Wangaratta’s newest heath facility, North East Exercise Solutions, according to accredited exercise physiologist, Shelly Harper. Shelly works hard to ensure every person feels welcome when they enter the new premises. “This approach underpins everything we do from a rehabilitative approach, Studio Pilates, strength and conditioning or health coaching,” she said. “The welcoming social environment of our group classes not only keep participants motivated and engaged with regular exercise, but are a whole lot of fun. “We are passionate about changing lives through providing support, education and a personalised exercise strategy which empower people’s approach to their body and health.” Shelly said this approach is important when working with people who have come to them through NDIS, Medicare, DVA as well as Workcover, TAC or Health Insurance referrals. “We see the benefits that exercise has for people who suffer from a range of different health issues, even when they may feel like exercise isn’t for them,” Shelly added. “We consider exercise as medicine and an important part of a treatment plan. “We see the effect that regular ‘doses’ of exercises has in improving blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of related

A Pilates practitioner for over 17 years, Shelly integrates a fine-tuned approach to each personalised Pilates program by understanding the mechanics and

physiology of how the body is coping and compensating. Shelly specialises in chronic conditions of the spine, pelvis and hip. She said Studio Pilates is a great way to improve posture and body awareness, as

well as staying strong and pain free during and beyond musculoskeletal rehabilitation. “Knowledge is power, and if you are aware of your movement compensations you can change them,” Shelly said. “It is about empowering people to take charge of their own bodies.” She said even 30 minutes of exercise can make a difference. “We have had great feedback from our half hour ‘Lunch Time Pick-Me Up classes’ which offer an opportunity to relax the mind in our Mindful Relaxation class or to stretch out and move in our Posture and Pilates class. “They are optimal for office workers and being located centrally in Wangaratta on Ovens Street, it is easy to pop in.” Shelly described the business as “more than just an exercise facility”, adding that “while most medical models look at aspects of health as separate components, North East Exercise Solutions identifies meaningful personal goals and provides solutions”. She said being healthy enough to go on a big holiday, or mobile enough to play with your children/grandkids are often the things that mean the most, and designing an exercise program that considers these goals along with specific considerations of your health needs will help you get there. Advanced medical technology at Wangaratta X-Ray WANGARATTA X-Ray has continued to keep pace with advances in medical technology with some of the latest additions to their diagnostic equipment. In the past few months, the clinic has taken possession of a new mammography machine, a Fuji Amulet model utilising the latest in tomosynthesis mammography. Tomosynthesis technology makes it possible to observe the breast tissue in three dimensions, and from a variety of angles, to detect abnormalities. In this technology, the x-ray tubes move through an arc while acquiring a series of low-dose x-ray images, which are then reconstructed into a range of tomosynthesis “slices”. These images make it easier to identify lesions or abnormalities which may be difficult to visualise in routine mammography, because of the presence of overlapping breast structures. Wangaratta X-Ray’s Wayne Ashton said the new technology can benefit both men and women, and the new machine has less pressure and discomfort than some of its older counterparts. The clinic has also recently begun using the Australiandeveloped Pro Medicus Visage software, which offers referring doctors and allied health services immediate access to diagnostic images generated at the clinic across a number of compatible devices.
