Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi: A Brief History In December of 1925, the fifth Grand Polemarch Earl B. Dickerson presided over the 15th Grand Chapter Meeting. Among the actions taken by the Delegates assembled was the transition from Regions to Provinces. With that action the Flagship Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was established. John M. Marquess was appointed as the first Eastern Province Polemarch. Brother Marquess was a native of Arkansas and a graduate of Fisk University (1902) and Dartmouth College (1904). During his time at Dartmouth he sang on the college Choir and Glee Club and was a member of the Varsity Track Team. By profession Marquess was an educator, teaching and leading a number of schools prior to serving as President of the Colored Agricultural and Normal University (which would become Langston University). Brother Marquess was the first in a long line of achievers that would serve as Eastern Province Polemarch. At the time the Eastern Province was established records indicate that it was comprised of four chapters- Epsilon, Xi, Baltimore (MD) Alumni, which served Baltimore City and County, and Washington (DC) Alumni. In contrast to the static boundaries, we’ve come to know, the boundaries of the province were amorphous and incorporated at one time Chapters from New York to North Carolina. Considering the current boundaries of the Eastern Province, the first Chapter was the Howard University Chapter, the Xi (E) of Kappa Alpha Psi which was chartered on December 27, 1920. The second overall and first Alumni Chapter was the Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter (E) chartered on July 15, 1921. The second Alumni Chapter and third Chapter overall was the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (E) which was chartered on October 27, 1924. But no matter the area the Eastern Province has been home to achievers and leaders. The East has given Kappa five Grand Polemarchs (James E. Scott, W. Henry “Stud” Greene, W. Thomas Carter, and Howard L. Tutman Jr.) and numerous Laurel Wreath Laureates, Elder Watson Diggs Awardees, and Guy Levis Grant Awardees. The Eastern Province is the epitome of achievement. In four years, the Eastern Province will celebrate its centennial and with it the recognition of its history of leadership as it has chartered a strong course for our Noble Clan.

A Message from the Province Polemarch Dear Brother: Province Reporter Brother DeAndre Howard and his committee has done another fine job with producing the Kappa Khronicle! They have raised the bar establishing a consistent process producing the Khronicle Quarterly highlighting the best that our Province has to offer. But what makes the Khronicle the success it has enjoyed are the quality submissions by brothers and our chapters. Because of this, we are able to keep the brothers informed regarding relevant activities taking place in the province; and provide a means of sharing timely updates pertaining to activities, especially at the local level. We must continue to spread the news of our good works which has been a great benefit to our society. Perhaps it should be noted that concerned Kappa men, undergraduate and graduate alike, freely share their time, talents, and resources at one time or another.Naturally, they derive great satisfaction from helping others. We have an inherent responsibility to keep the good name and the good works of Kappa Alpha Psi at the forefront of the public at all times. As we go forth, let us endeavor to motivate others, to emphasize the importance of effective leadership skills, and to reflect on Kappa Alpha Psi’s time-honored recipe for ACHIEVEMENT: by the dint of our hard work and by our dedication to the honorable precepts of Phi Nu Pi. I sincerely hope that the material contained in this quarterly edition will be studied very carefully and put to the greatest possible use. Feel free to share this publication with other members of the Eastern Province community. Your feedback will assist us in improving our efforts.

This edition of the Khronicle features 52 articles from several undergraduate and alumni chapters throughout our beloved province. Additionally, several brothers who have epitomized the essence of achievement in every field of human endeavor are highlighted throughout this edition.

Once again, I need to highlight my committee members who continue to work tirelessly with getting the publication ready for you. As you begin to think about your chapter’s next submission (Spring 2022), I want to leave you with another charge. The charge is to reach out to engage undergraduates within the Khronicle submission process. For those chapters who do not provide direct oversight to an undergraduate chapter, reach out to any undergraduates in your Kappa network and encourage them to submit. As always, continue to make sure that photos are straight, free of any blurriness, are not cut off and in jpeg or png format. I hope that you and your chapter enjoy this edition of the Khronicle. Notable Achievements President Biden Taps Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Member Larry D. Turner for Labor Department Inspector General Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Dakhalfani Boyd

The Honorable Larry D. Turner, a member of the Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter was sworn in as the Inspector General (IG) of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) on December 7, 2021, following his nomination by President Biden and unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Life Member Turner is a fall 1975 initiate of the Alpha Iota Chapter (Morgan State University), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Since 2014, Brother Turner has been the Deputy Inspector General (3-Star equivalent Senior Executive Service (SES) member) at the U.S. Department of Labor and began serving as the Acting Inspector General June 2020 before being nominated by the President in May of 2021 to become the 8th DOL Inspector General. Brother Turner is the second African American to hold this prestigious position and the first in over forty years. The DOL IG is one of the 29 President Nominated Senate Confirmed Inspectors General. There are 75 total Federal IGs.

As head of the Office of Inspector General (OIG), Brother Turner leads a nationwide, independent oversight organization with an annual budget of $91 million and more than 350 criminal investigators, auditors, attorneys, subject-matter experts, and management professionals whose mission is to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in DOL programs, and to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in DOL operations. In this role, Brother Turner oversees essential programs, such as unemployment insurance, worker safety and health, training and reemployment services, pension and health care benefits, wage and hour standards, and economic statistics. He also directs criminal investigations into organized crime influence and labor racketeering corruption in employee benefit plans, internal union affairs, and labor- management relations. In addition, the OIG works with other law enforcement partners on human trafficking matters.

Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Charter Member Brother Robe'rt Palmer Jr. Retires After 32 Years of Federal Civilian Service Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Dakhalfani Boyd

Brother Robe’rt L. Palmer, Jr is a Spring 1987 initiate of the Rowan University Chapter, the Eta Delta. He served as Senior IT Specialist, Secure Internet Protocol Router New Construction and Special Projects Lead Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC). As Senior IT Specialist, SIPR New Construction and Special Projects Lead, Brother Palmer lead the command’s SIPR New Construction and Special Projects activities in support of Marine Corps Assistant Chief of Staff (AC/S G6) Acquisition Programs.

He directed and controlled the full range of requirements and responsibilities associated with the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure for all requirements, as well as Operation and Maintenance required for the day-to-day operations of MCSC, and affiliated Program Executive Offices (PEO’s) and Program Management Offices (PMO’s). Brother Palmer also served as the Command Mentor for interns and journeyman personnel within the command. He started off as a mentee and has diligently served as one of the few selected Command mentors for the last 3 years.

Brother Palmer previously worked for MCSC from 2010-2021; as a dual competency PM & IT Level III Certified Acquisition Professional his assignments included: Marine Corps Enterprise Information Technology Systems (MCEITS), Enterprise Information Technology Service Management (E-ITSM), Joint Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicle Program (PEO MRAP) and finally the Assistance Chief of Staff (AC/S) G6 Special Projects Lead. Prior to assuming his current positions within MCSC, he served with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) from 1998 to 2010. While serving with DISA, he served as the Implementation Project Manager for the Composite Healthcare ServicesCHCS II medical program. While

serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff he served as the Chief of IT Requirements for ALL VIP’s. Brother Palmer started his federal employment on June 26, 1989, as an Army Materiel Command (AMC) Command Electronic Command (CECOM) intern. While serving as an intern he completed a 4-month rigorous Management program at the Army Material Engineering College (AMEC), Rock Island, IL. He went on to attend the Signal Officers Basics Course (SOBC) class of 1992 and was the ONLY civilian in a class of over 100 1st and 2nd Lieutenant’s. Brother Palmer received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) from Glassboro State College now known as Rowan University 1988 and a Master’s degree in Computer Information System (CIS) from Strayer University 2001. He was also accepted and matriculated into Capella University Ph.D. Program in 2001. Brother Palmer served as a Program Manager and Information Technology Certified Level III Acquisition Professional. Brother Palmer served 32 years of Department of Defense (DOD) civilian service culminating in his tenure as a Civilian/Marine retiree. Brother Palmer also received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, which is an award presented to denote acts of meritorious service, and sometimes gallantry, that are worthy of recognition. Brother Palmer received this medal during his retirement ceremony. Brother Palmer is a charter member and Past Polemarch of the Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter of our noble Klan. Brother Palmer currently serves as the Eastern Province ViceChair of the By-Laws committee. Brother Palmer was the 2013 Eastern Province and 81st Grand Chapter Bert V. Wadkins awardee for outstanding Medium Chapter Guide Right Director of the Guide Right program. He served as Vice-Chair of the Eastern Province ,

Guide Right program from 2014 – 2016. Brother Palmer was the recipient of the Alumni Ambassador and The Grand Marshall of his alma mater, Rowan University 2017. He is a member of First Mount Zion Baptist Church, Dumfries, VA. Brother Palmer's immediate family consists of Robe’rt L. Palmer, Sr (Father) Betty L. Palmer (Mother), Remond K. Palmer, Sr (Brother), Nicole Palmer-Guess (Sister), and Germaine C. Palmer (Brother). Brother Robe’rt L. Palmer, Jr is currently enjoying retirement life with his parents (Robe’rt Sr, Betty Palmer), family, and friends. Diamonds to Brother Palmer!

Brother Kenneth Ferguson Cited by Hampton City Police Division

Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Arthur Price On October 23, 2021, the Hampton Police Division presented Brother Asst. Chief Kenneth W. Ferguson with the prestigious P. G. Minetti Excellence in Leadership Award in recognition of his outstanding

achievements, dedication, and commitment to excellence in leadership. Brother Ferguson, a 2008 Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter initiate, has been a member of the Hampton Police Division for thirty years. He was first hired after serving in the United States Navy and is Hampton’s longest serving assistant chief. He also served the city with distinction as its interim chief throughout its national search for a new chief, following the most recent chief’s retirement. Brother Ferguson removed his name from consideration for the position and is now looking forward to retirement; such that he can spend more time with his family and the Chapter’s Guide Right/Kappa League Program.

Brother Jeremy Blunt Named 2021 Virginia High School League Class 3 Football Coach of the Year Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Arthur Price Phoebus High School’s (Hampton VA) Head Coach, Brother Jeremy L. Blunt, was named the Class 3 Coach of the Year after leading his Phantoms football team to a 14-1 record; concluding with a 22-14 win over Liberty Christian High School in the 2021 State Class 3 Championship Game.

During his nine-year tenure as the Phantom’s varsity head coach, Brother Blunt has amassed a record of 98 wins and 18 losses while winning five district championships, 3 regional championships and one state championship. He’s also been named district coach of the year three times and allconference coach three times. Brother Blunt is a 2014 initiate of the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter and is an active member of and constant contributor to the chapter’s Guide Right/Kappa League Committee.

Science from Webster University. He’s no stranger in the youth mentor realm, involved in a multitude of mentoring programs, including Big Brother Big Sister, the Military Youth Program, Boys and Girls Club, and past chairman of the award-winning Woodbridge Alumni Chapter’s Guide Right Program. Brother Stover states “I started the FFK program because I know the youth needs mentors to help educate them and assist them with life goals,” Stover also said “I grew up in group homes and foster homes, and I was lucky to have a coach mentor me throughout school.” The FFK program started September 11th, 2021 and currently has 10 students. It offers training in drone engineering, college preparation, financial management, etiquette and mental health.

Brother David Stover Launches STEM Program in Fredericksburg Virginia Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Alumni Chapter By: Dakhalfani Boyd Brother David Stover, a Spring 2013 initiate of the Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter recently launched his Fredericksburg Future Kings (FFK) program to educate youth in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Education is important to Stover, and in particular STEM, evidenced by earning a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from Troy State University and a master’s in Computer

Sessions are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Saturday at the Fredericksburg campus of Germanna Community College and are open to youth in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, King George, Culpeper, Stafford and Orange counties. Registration is $100 and Stover said he relies on donations and volunteers to make the program successful. He credits Arik King of Future Kings in Woodbridge for encouraging him to start a similar program here and Virginia Aviation Board Chairman Rod Hall, FFK education director Susan Williams, and volunteers Ceresh Perry and James Jones for their support. “We are currently targeting African American and Hispanic youth from underserved communities, but we turn no one away if interested in the program. Age-appropriate STEM instructions will be taught in efforts of motivating young men and women from

grades 6 to 12,” Stover said. “It’s a year-round program that helps the youth with everyday issues. The students will go on college tours and attend STEM camps at the end of the year, which are free to the members of FFK. Next year, with support from the community, I will be able to add cybersecurity to the FFK program here in Fredericksburg.” Diamonds to Brother David Stover!

AF YBC Winter Events Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder The members of the Young Brother's Committee (YBC) have done a lot within the AF chapter this year; leadership roles, new initiatives, a bevy of events planned, YBC's involvement has continued to shine. While we continue to lead within the chapter, we also thrive in the social aspect as well. The Brothers of AF hosted the 4th Christmas Pajama House Party! Another successful event for the Nupes as we achieved our goals and had fun in the process. This House Party is as advertised, at our chapter facility where AF continues to expand its network amongst the community, other Kappa Alpha Psi chapters and other D-9 organizations. While the older brothers within the chapter participated and assisted, this initiative is primarily led by the members of the YBC. Every year the party is amplified, as we take lessons learned and looked to not just focus on the positive outcomes, but striving to achieve! We thank any brothers from outside chapters

who've assisted with our initiative as well as your collaboration is also acknowledged. In addition to our own events, AF participated in the Petersburg Alumni "Hoops 4 Hope Basketball Tournament" on January 15, 2022. AF donated canned goods to the Petersburg Hope Center Food Pantry in hopes to assist with any lack of food within the community. While a volunteer event, the Nupes also aimed to hold true to their "Always First" motto by taking home the First Prize trophy. Always First! We thank the Petersburg Alumni Chapter for the invite!

Rodney McKenzie's Promotion to Executive Vice President at Wells Fargo Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Mark Felder

Kudos to Brother Rodney McKenzie for his promotion to Executive Vice President and Chief Audit Director with Wells Fargo! This culminates a career of numerous accomplishments in risk management and is indicative of his pursuit for continuous Achievement. As a member of Wells Fargo’s Management Committee, Brother McKenzie’s influence, leadership, and expertise will inform corporate decisions, which will impact lending opportunities for minorities and small businesses. Brother McKenzie’s promotion reflects great credit upon himself, Wells Fargo, the Eastern Province, and Kappa Alpha Psi.

Brother's Spotlight - AF Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder A few special acknowledgments to brothers within AF during the winter months: As of January 11th, Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter has a roster of over 200 dues-paying brothers, making us one of the largest chapters in the Eastern Province and Kappa Alpha Psi. Brothers, I thank you all for continuing to support the efforts of our chapter, and for ensuring that you are financial on all levels with the fraternity. The funds are not simply meant to give you access to vote, they provide valued means to support our various chapter programs including but not limited to our Guide Right programs, our undergraduate chapter at George Mason University (Mu Mu), Senior Kappa Affairs, Charity activities, and yes even food for the monthly chapter meeting. Your commitment and diligence are appreciated and needed to ensure AF is strong. Job well done to Brother Isaiah Floyd, a real estate professional, who served as a guest speaker for a virtual “Homebuyer Seminar” on January 15, 2022. Thank you for your leadership in this effort. Congratulations to the TowsonCatonsville (MD) Alumni chapter on their charting, and congratulations to AF’s own, Brother Kendall White who is a Charter member of that chapter. Thank you for your assistance brothers, we appreciate your commitment. Keep achieving Nupes!

District of Columbia Commission on Fathers, Men and Boys Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter By: John Cotten Congratulations to Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter Polemarch John F. Cotten as he was appointed to the District of Columbia Commission on Father, Men, and Boys by Mayor Muriel Bowser and confirmed by the DC City Council.

YBC Anniversary Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder Ever since Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was founded, its involvement with young brothers has been evident. The founding members were young brothers striving to achieve in every field of human endeavor. In founding the fraternity, the 10 Founders created a business that must be maintained year in and out. Relying on an organized structure, which contains a bevy of supplementary chapters, the fraternity continues to thrive and showcase its motto, "Achievement". With each generation making their contributions, younger members of the fraternity want to make their own contributions to the fraternity and their individual chapters. As usual, the Alexandria-Fairfax (AF) Alumni Chapter holds true to its "Always First" motto by creating the Young Brothers Committee (YBC), a committee created to further advance the chapter in a multitude of ways. Why the YBC? It is a committee with younger members within AF who strive to improve the chapter and fraternity by taking on more of a leadership role(s). However, the influence of the older brothers is also accepted, appreciated, acknowledged, and utilized. You may currently wonder about the origin of the YBC and the differences between its inception to the present day. The objective of this story is to highlight the past, present, and future of YBC. Simply observing the growth of YBC since its inception is quite astonishing for a multitude of reasons. Let's dive in and view this wonderful story of young brothers achieving.

If a problem arises, a solution is always available. The lack of leadership opportunities for the younger members of Kappa was brought to light on January 23, 2009, by Brothers Richard Mattox, Polemarch at the time, Nick Nicholson, Milton Bail, Devin Burnett, Louey "Trey" Moore, Derrick Taylor, and Thomas Wiley. As stated, a problem arises and a solution is always available. How does one enable younger members the opportunity to lead in a chapter filled with alpha males with egos? Simple, BROTHERHOOD! Building relationships between the younger and older members of Kappa is pivotal. With each entity learning from one another, the youth and creativity of younger members plus the experience of older members can only breed excellence. In 2010-2011, the YBC became an official committee within AF and continued growing its aim of achieving excellence throughout the chapter. Preparing the younger members within the chapter for leadership roles also helps preserve the chapter's future by improving member retention. Giving people the ability to speak is a human right, and the YBC is a tool to help one voice their opinions within the chapter to make a difference.

The YBC's excellent retention rate is displayed as we celebrate its 13th anniversary, the beginning of the teenage years in our society. Like a teenager, the YBC went through growing pains with the older generation, however, YBC's continued growth is evidenced by the mature group of young men achieving. While currently high functioning, initially there were struggles and eventual lessons learned for the YBC. With an emphasis on the younger members within an alumni chapter, the misconception of being a

social committee or undergrad entity surfaced. To dispel this notion, YBC ensured to emphasize the level of focus on the servitude aspect as opposed to strictly social events. In doing so assured a unique brand amongst alumni chapters within the fraternity. In addition to the external chapter struggles, the internal chapter struggles of navigating within AF as a younger member also existed. Whether a recently graduated undergrad member or a new initiate, being able to eventually lead initiatives and speak in front of older members can be intimidating. Struggles navigating within the chapter are evident as AF is a large, powerful, and political chapter. Garnering respect from members is truly earned as climbing the ranks can be viewed as a challenge. However, due to the formation of the YBC, younger members can observe and quickly implement the lessons taught. Especially as both AF and the YBC adopted the "Next Man Up" approach, the more capable brothers available the better.

Fast-forwarding to the present day, as stated before, the YBC is a very important cog to the chapter; assisting the older brothers, bringing in revenue for the Chapter, and continuing to further AF's many agendas. Especially with the last four (4) membership intakes, YBC has grown expeditiously and exponentially; proving successful in cultivating positive relationships with new potential initiates. Adding over 30 new brothers to the YBC has allowed for more ideas, larger events, more functions hosted, and more exposure to the surrounding communities. These new YBC members are currently displaying leadership and several are current AF Chapter Officers.

While one may look at these brothers being voted in as "charity" from some brothers, one should look at this as an earned investment of the YBC members. As stated earlier, being voted into these roles by the brothers within the chapter shows you have a certain level of respect within the Chapter. While not a contest, again, AF continued to display its "Always First" motto. The surrounding Kappa Alpha Psi Chapters have also shown as promising as other chapters look to begin their own YBC's. This level of acknowledgment simply confirms the YBC continues to thrive and achieve as the brothers aimed for in 2009. AF's vision of the YBC continues to evolve as we continue to bring in new and achieve new members.

It's important to note the progress and humility of both the older and newer brothers of Kappa. All must utilize one another for the advancement of the Fraternity and their Chapters. The older brothers must be willing to share their knowledge and allow the younger members the ability to lead and grow. Patience, understanding and remembrance is required as growth is a continuous process, which also leaves room for mistakes to be made in order for lessons learned. Simultaneously the younger brothers must be willing to listen to the guidance given and leverage the lessons learned from the older brothers. Putting aside your ego and being able to blend their teachings in today's society, creating the best of both worlds. While nothing in life is truly perfect, we can still strive for perfection and in brotherhood, constant improvement is needed. As the older members of today reflect on the younger days and the younger members continue to age in Kappa, let's not forget our present day feelings as our roles will forever continue to change. On Sunday, November 21, 2021, at City View McCulloh, 501 Dolphin St, Baltimore, MD 21217 from 2pm-4 pm the brothers served meals for the “Annual Thanksgivings For All”. As always behind all good Kappa men is a great woman and this event was no different. The brothers of the BAC were provided support from the Baltimore Silhouettes who participated by providing the desserts to the elderly.

Community Service Baltimore (MD) Alumni Spreads Peace and Good Will During the Holiday Season Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Tyrell Snape The Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter (BAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc, ended 2021 with service. The BAC made it their mission to give back during the holiday season. Many people have been affected by the pandemic and it has been a major impact on the youth of Baltimore. Through managing several community service activities in the Baltimore area, BAC started with making sure the community had a happy Thanksgiving in November. The brothers of BAC were called to service on Friday, November 19, 2021, to assist our brother Senator Antonio Hayes at Robert W. Coleman Elementary School with the distribution of over fifty (50) turkeys for kids and their families. The giveback didn’t stop there it was an actionpacked weekend of service for the community.

On Saturday, December 18, 2021, from 1 PM to 3 PM at the Liberty Court Shopping Center in Baltimore, MD brothers joined Speaker Adrienne Jones, Maryland House of Delegates to support her Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Every year the chapter provides new toys and nonperishable foods to make the holidays a joyful time for children and families, especially for those suffering the effects of the ongoing pandemic. This year was no different as several brothers came out in the cold to pass out the toys and talk to the kids that came out.

On December 23, 2021, Brother Devron Dickens, Keeper of Records delivered three Epson projectors to Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School. The projectors were a donation from funds raised by the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore Inc, and through the school’s partnership with the chapter. The equipment supports Eutaw-Marshburn's mission to enhance the learning capabilities in the classroom and the chapter's commitment to supporting the school in achieving its goals.

WHUR Toy Drive Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Marcus Smith

Wills, Estates and Trusts Webinar Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Marcus Smith The Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter hosted a virtual webinar on Wills, Estates, and Trusts, on October 23, 2021. The webinar was presented by Attorney Suren G. Adams. The hour-long seminar was a huge success with 58 participants. Many of the participants say they received excellent financial planning advice on budgeting, retirement, and college savings.

Santa Claus is Coming Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapter By: James Stringfield Sr The month of December was a very busy and productive time for the Fort Washington, (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. The Social Action Committee in conjunction with WHUR FM radio participated in the Toys 4 Tots Toy Drive at

Iverson Mall. Polemarch R. Cannon was interviewed on air representing Kappa Alpha Psi and "The Fort!" The Ways and Means Committee closed the Fort 200 fundraiser on December 17th. The chapter participated in the Family Justice Center's Holiday of Hope on December 18th. Several brothers adopted families for this event. Later that evening, the chapter held it's Ugly Sweater Party at the MGM Felt, which was well attended by brothers and guests. Lastly, Social Action participated in the Christmas Food Basket giveaway event for the Potomac Landing and Fort Foot Elementary schools.

Our noble fraternity was able to bless 10 families with a Thanksgiving Day basket. This is a community service initiative that our chapter has conducted every year for quite some time. We are very thankful to the brothers for gathering the elements and taking time out of their busy schedules to assist and support this endeavor. MLK Day of Service Project Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Darrell Calicker

“Given the pandemic last year, we were limited and only able to distribute gift cards. This year, we are back in action, with real, nutritious food going out to the people who need it,” said Brother Walter Smiley, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and event organizer. “We have been doing this a long time and each year the need grows. We are appreciative of all the people who come together to donate time and money to make this happen.” Food boxes featured frozen turkeys, fresh vegetables, stuffing mix, ground turkey, and gift cards.

The Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter (SSA) bonded together to sponsor their annual MLK Day of Service Project. On Saturday, January 22, approximately fifteen brothers and eight Kappa Leaguers partnered to assemble care boxes at the Kappa Korner, which were immediately delivered to the respective homeless shelter partners. All totaled, SSA donated over 100 care packages of clothing garments to six different homeless shelters/nonprofit organizations.

AF Project Giveback Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder

On November 20, 2021, the brothers of the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi participated in "Project Giveback"; a Thanksgiving food drive. This was the 27th annual Thanksgiving food distribution held in Gum Springs Community Center in Alexandria Virginia (VA). While the air was quite cold for the members early that Saturday morning, Volunteers gathered amongst one another and warmed the hearts of the less fortunate local families with the boxes of Thanksgiving food packaged during the Project Giveback event.

The Brothers of AF partnered with Project Giveback and other local Divine 9 organizations to help identify local families in need within the Alexandria Virginia (VA) community and deliver two U-Hauls full of packaged food kits prepared by the volunteers. In addition, to maintain compliance with COVID-19 policies, Project Giveback invited the Fairfax County Health Department to participate in the event. Their Mobile COVID-19 Testing Clinic was on-site to provide testing to attendees and volunteers. With winter holiday gatherings soon after, many were able to take a COVID-19 test in advance of getting together with families. The Fairfax County Health Department’s Stronger2 initiative to help measure the health needs of the local AlexandriaFairfax VA community. Both the AF Brothers and Stronger2 aim to improve health literacy among local communities including, but not limiting to, African-American, African and Hispanic communities. We thank all of those who attended this annual event. It's important to give back to the community, especially as we've been so fortunate to be in a favorable situation at this current time. It is hard to look back on the past year without feelings of heartache, over the impact of the COVID- 19 pandemic and the economic downturn that it has caused. Across the globe, millions of families were faced with financial and health challenges.

In November, brothers of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter stood in solidarity and support of our neighbors as we brought attention and awareness to our traffic and safety issues within the community to city officials after a toddler was struck by a vehicle that rolled through a stop sign on Kappa Alpha Psi Way. Polemarch John F. Cotten met with residents and listened to their concerns and ensured them that the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter is available to assist and will continue to be a viable and valuable part of the community.

However, in the face of these obstacles, the brothers of the Theta Theta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. found a way to assist those who were negatively impacted. From November 21st - December 19th, 2021, Theta Theta brothers Paul Brown-Taylor, Amadou Wade, Tanyi Makia Jr., Adam Handy, Amari Samaiye, Brian Ndofor, and Thomas Gaskins IV, with the help of the Theta Theta advisory team, Mark Ellington and Vernon Marrow; donated over 200 coats in their "Holiday Coat Drive" to Rainbow Community Development Center so that the community could keep warm for the holiday.

On this endeavor the brothers also helped pack cars and groceries donated to the center's food pantry to help ensure that families had enough food before Thanksgiving.

Ring-The-Bells for the Salvation Army Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter By: DeAndre Howard On Saturday, December 18, 2021, Brothers DeAndre Howard, Larry Ford, Ed Thomas, Marvin Martin, Terrell Davis, and Ridge Williamson participated in the Chapter’s Annual Ring-The-Bells Event for the Salvation Army at the Wal-Mart on Mount Cross Rd. in Danville, VA. The chapter rang for 2 hours, during lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon. People were certainly in the giving spirit as the bucket was filled at the conclusion of our time.

Thanksgiving event. This year a single mother with four young children was chosen by the Danville Department of Social Services, where our chapter brother John Moody is the director. The chapter purchased the main items and provided the family with a gift card to get the supplemental items. Brothers Ed Thomas, Ridge Williamson, Marvin Marvin, Jr., Patrick Pickard, George J. Durham, Jr., and Micah Knight attended the delivery.

While in this time of COVID, CPSS fought the good fight by educating the community through dispersing informational flyers about COVID-19 and the flu and participating in the national initiative “I’m Vaccinated” yellow button awareness campaign. These momentous efforts were performed by 30 brothers CPSS brothers, five Theta Theta brothers , 25 Kappa League volunteers over 550 total volunteer hours. Lastly, CPSS orchestrated a holiday party to gather donations to support the chapter's community service initiatives and programs.

Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Marcus Smith On October 16, 2021, Brother Benjamin Moore gave an informative presentation to the Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD)Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated Kappa Leaguers on fiscal responsibility. Brother Moore charted a path and gave the young men real- world examples of being responsible with their future earnings. Brother Moore explained how making the right decisions early in life can help them become financially independent and live a good life. The topics ranged from day-to-day spending to the benefits of long-term retirement savings were covered. This interactive session discussed the three ways to earn a living. They are: 1) own or work for a business 2) work for the government 3) live off welfare. Participants were asked to choose one. There was a lot of interest in the topics discussed with questions from the Kappa Leaguers like “what is the best way to get started saving, what is welfare, etc.” Ben also compared social media to

real life. Specifically, the lifestyles showed on Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media sites. Then, compare that to actual household incomes and the reality that nearly four out of five U.S. workers live paycheck to paycheck. Therefore, spending above their means could lead to bankruptcy, evictions, and other legal actions to name a few. In conclusion, the presentation was well received by the Kappa Leaguers, and many wanted to follow up with Brother Moore seeking additional advice.

In July of 2021 at the 85th Grand Chapter Meeting of Kappa Alpha Psi, the fraternity bestowed upon the Silver Spring (MD) Alumni (SSA) Chapter, the Jay Crosby Award in the large chapter category for excellence in guide right initiatives. This honor recognizes the most outstanding Guide Right Program, named in honor of Elder Watson Diggs Laureate Jay Crosby. Led by Guide Right Director Chris Thompson, Lead Advisor Elijah Mason, and the Guide Right Committee, this award is a testament to more than 100 meetings and 900 hours of service by SSA Brothers and its Guide Right students. The Jay Crosby Award culminates a year of tireless efforts to orient our youth for Achievement, which is befitting SSA’s distinction as the “Top of the Diamond” chapter in the Eastern Province.

The Guide Right Program of the Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter (SSA) participated in the Kingdom Cares Community Service event on January 15th, 2022. The event, spearheaded by the Kingdom Fellowship Community Development Corporation, the Brothers of SSA, 16 Kappa

League students, and several Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated partnered to pack more than 200 boxes of non-perishable items for distribution to the Montgomery County community. Following the event, many of the Kappa Leaguers cited “fellowship” and “helping others” as highlights from the service project. To date, the Kingdom Cares Food Distribution program has served approximately 33,600 households with fresh produce, dairy, protein, and shelf-stable items.

With Martin Luther King Day being a monumental moment in our society, the members of Alexandria-Fairfax (AF) Guide Right/Kappa League helped celebrate. Providing a positive learning experience for the kids, it's important to spread the knowledge of a man of substance such as the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On the weekend of January 15, 2022, the A-F Kappa League started at a Fairfax County NAACP Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Economic Empowerment Brunch. At the brunch, the Keynote Speaker was Richard Fowler, host of the Richard Fowler Show, a Fox News Channel contributor, and millennial. Introduced by our Kappa League President Ayen Laster, Mr. Fowler helped enlighten the youth and spread the knowledge of Dr. King.

In addition, Kappa Leaguers Bryson Banks and Kaden Coleman read for awareness an article by Adelle M. Banks from the Religion News Service about the close relationship of Dr. Martin L. King and Rev Abernathy. The Program celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the spirit of the pursuit for racial, environmental, and economic equity.

Then on January 17, 2022, the A-F Kappa League participated in the Virtual John T. Lanier, Sr. 14th Annual Virginia Legislative Day is a forum where elected officials come to share relevant issues of the day primarily in VA such as: • Redistricting • Updates on the Omicron variant • Education in our schools (Critical Race Theory being pushed by new Gov.) • What impact will the newly elected Executive State Government Impact our Communities. A-F Kappa Leaguer Zion Nuby had the opportunity to deliver a few of some very good discussion questions on the behalf of the Eastern Province Guide Right/Kappa League from the various topics Delegate Bagby and other Delegates addressed. All in all, the members of AF have continued to lead a positive AF Guide Right program with the assistance of extremely supportive Kappa Leaguers; Ayden Laster, and Kappa Leaguers (L to R) Kaden Coleman, Ayden Laster, and Bryson Banks. The Chef and the Boys Gaithersburg/Rockville (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Pedro Arguello

The G-Rock Kappa Leaguers joined an illustrious list of people who have enjoyed amazing food from a renowned chef. The former personal chef to movie mogul Will Smith and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, Chef Staci, brought her talents to GaithersburgRockville to introduce the Kappa League’s Phase II module -Training and Careers, to our young scholars, especially, Kappa Leaguer Ricardo Taylor, an eleventhgrader at Thomas S. Wootton, who aspires to become a chef in his own restaurant someday.

Ricardo and his fellow G-Rock Kappa Leaguers donned on a toque blanche and apron as they joined Chef Staci in the hospitality kitchen on the campus of Montgomery College-Rockville to focus on meal prep and learning the right way to cook a gourmet shrimp alfredo entrée. Before the training, Chef Staci talked to the young scholars about her path into becoming a chef and the obstacles she had to overcome in the hospitality field to ensure she was given the same opportunity as the others in her class. Her main takeaway was if you are serious about a career choice, you must apply yourself and hone your skill in order to stand out among the others. After listening to the chef, the young scholars got to work on meal prep. First, they washed and seasoned the shrimp. After that, it was time to measure out the correct amount of pasta for the meal. Then it was time to put fire to the pan. Chef Staci trained each young scholar on the right way to sear and sauté shrimp.

The final product and the smiles on the young scholars’ faces proved that this enrichment activity hit the right spot.

On Friday, December 17, 2021, the brothers of the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., participated in our annual toy drive. Brothers Martin and Thomas lead the event and several chapter brothers contributed to the toy drive fund out of their own pockets. The event was very successful as all the toys were given out in 16 minutes.

During its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, December 19, 2021, the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Chapter's Kappa League, working in conjunction with the chapter's social action committee, concluded its annual community service project. During the preceding month, members collected travel size toiletries to contribute toward the provision of Christmas gift bags to three homeless shelters on the Virginia Peninsula. Aided by contributions from the Hampton-Newport News Alumni Chapter Silhouettes, the Kappa Leaguers prepared 38 abounding bags containing toothpaste, tooth brushes, lotion, mouth wash, deodorant, shampoo and soap. The bags were delivered later that afternoon.

BMAC KAPPA LEAGUE LAW SCHOOL ASPIRING Saturday, February 5th, 2022, the Kappa HIGHER FORUM & BMAC On League/Guide Right Committee of the BowieMitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter (BMAC) of Kappa CHESS KLUB Alpha Psi sought to address the underrepresentation INSTRUCTIONAL of black male law students head on by organizing their “BMAC Kappa League Law School Aspiring SESSION Higher Forum” at Prince George’s Community \class, but only 988 Black men. The same trend has existed in undergraduate higher education for decades.[1]

Amid the national landscape that is disturbingly filled with constant attacks on social reform policies and the perpetuation white supremacy, the time is of the essence to train and nurture the minds of a new generation of lawyers to further the pursuit of justice for our community. Alarmingly, there is indeed a dearth of Black students pursuing the study of law. Recent statistics shed further light on this downward trend and the underrepresentation of Black law students. In 2018, Black students made up 7.91% of total incoming law students, but in 2019, they accounted for 7.57% of incoming law students. This drop caused the overall percentage of Black students in law school to decrease from 8.11% to 7.94%.[1] This decline accounted for the largest decrease amongst people of color who decided to attend law school in 2019. Black law student underrepresentation has often been attributed to Black student underrepresentation in undergraduate institutions; lower test scores rendered on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT); and lower attrition rates for 1st year enrolled Black law students. Nearly twice as many Black women as Black men study law every year. There were 1,889 Black women in the 2019 incoming

With over 175 years of combined legal experience, our distinguished guests included: Brother Robert L. Jenkins, Jr. – Brother Jenkins is considered an accomplished trial lawyer having been listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Lawyers for the last three consecutive years. Brother Jenkins is a partner at the Bynum & Jenkins Law Firm in Alexandria, Virginia where his practice is concentrated in federal criminal defense. Brother Jenkins also serves as an Alumni Member of our Grand Board of Directors and previously served as Polemarch of the Eastern Province as well as Polemarch of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter; The Honorable Brother John T. Henderson, Jr. – Brother Henderson is an Administrative Law Judge with the Maryland Office of Administrative Hearings. In his capacity as an administrative law judge, Brother Henderson presides over hearings centered on citizen or business claims against Maryland State agencies. Brother Henderson rules on the admissibility, authenticity, relevance and probative value of evidence, and issues written decisions in multiple subject areas. Brother Henderson is also a certified mediator for the State of Maryland.

Brother Donald M. Temple – Brother Temple, of the Temple Law Office, is affectionally known as Washington, DC’s “Street Lawyer”. Brother Temple has secured successful civil rights jury verdicts in Maryland and DC federal courts that include police brutality and race discrimination cases. Brother Temple has also successfully litigated appellate cases in the DC and Fourth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and most recently in the U.S. Supreme Court. And for 40 consecutive years, Brother Temple has worked with the Charles Hamilton Houston Law School Preparation Program (CHH). CHH is a rigorous seven-week prep program for entering minority law students. CHH has educated over 600 entering law students who have attended various law schools across the country. Brother Bobby G. Henry, Jr. – Brother Henry is a former Member of our Grand Board of Directors and is the principal of the Henry Legal Firm, LLC with offices in Landover and Largo, Maryland. Brother Henry has served as General Counsel for the Jericho Baptist Church Ministries, Inc. for over 26 years and for the City of Praise Family Ministries, Inc. since 2012. Brother Henry also served as an active duty Commissioned Officer with the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1994. Recently, Brother Henry was appointed as the Civilian Aid To The Secretary of the Army/Maryland-South. ·Brother Kenrick F. Roberts – Brother Roberts litigates cases before the Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission as well as in the Circuit and Appellate Courts in Maryland. He has been recognized consecutively as a Maryland Rising Star by Super Lawyers, nominated to Lawyers of Distinction, and invited to the National Black Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 - Maryland. Additionally, Brother Roberts currently serves as the Keeper of Records for the Bowie-Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. These accomplished Kappa Men engaged in a moderated panel discussion and imparted knowledge and insight on: the underrepresentation of young Black men entering law school; how your law degree can

change your life; the value of a relentless work ethic; the dedication and discipline required for the law school process; utilizing your law degree, voice and platform to combat white supremacy; how laws impact social justice and racial disparities within our criminal justice system; the bond between success and sacrifice; the motivating aspects of poverty; the opportunity/obligation to serve your community; and the need to maximize your time and never take it for granted. Additionally, our Kappa Leaguers also embarked on their first in person BMAC Chess Klub Instructional Session. BMAC Guide Right Chairman, Brother Dwayne Burns, provided keen insight regarding the critical thinking component to the game of Chess. Brother Burns was also able to articulate and illustrate the many transferable life skills one could gain upon learning how to effectively and strategically navigate the Chess board. In all, more than 30 Kappa Leaguers were greatly impacted.

Chapter Events Senior Kappa Fish Fry Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Skyler Carroll

In October, the Norfolk Alumni Chapter and it’s Younger Brothers Committee (YBC) decided to give thanks to our senior brothers, who paved the way for Kappa to be what it is today. The YBC Chair, Brother Gary Smith, organized a Fish Fry in our Senior Kappa’s honor. It was a beautiful opportunity for the brothers and their beautiful silhouettes to get out and see people they have seen only through zoom calls for the past 18 months. Along with the fish fry, brothers enjoyed some friendly competition in games of corn hole. This was an amazing moment for brothers younger and older to connect through fellowship and give respect to those who paved the way for the bright future of the Norfolk Alumni Chapter and our noble klan of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (E) “41st Charter Day Anniversary" Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter By: D. Brown

On November 20, 2021, the Brothers of Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (E) (FLAC) celebrated their 41st Charter Day in the Bond of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Thanks to the vision of our 13 charter members understanding the need to start a chapter that would support our military and civilian population that are active and inactive due to constant transitions between military bases and schools. The rationale that motivated these charter members to request a charter was stimulated through research and personal contact with brothers that reflected over 60 members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated living in the Southside Virginia Area (Petersburg, Hopewell, Fort Lee, Prince George, and brothers stationed at Fort Lee, for a period of one to four years not affiliated with a local chapter). Less than 35% of brothers who are eligible for membership in an alumni chapters in our fraternity are active members. The rationale for brothers not maintaining active membership is diverse. However, there was a common feeling of our fraternity brothers associated with the military community of Fort Lee, Virginia that there was a need for an alumni chapter to cater toward the traditional needs of the military, (active and retired) and governmental personnel while fulfilling the objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi and the fundamental purpose of our fraternity. Kappa men associated with Fort Lee need to unite as Kappa men and work on public service projects, Guide Right, Social Action, Kappa League, and Political Action programs which enhance the military environment and associated communities.

Currently, there are over 40 brothers financial within FLAC stationed in different States and provinces across the military. There were over fifteen brothers present in person for this event due to COVID-19 restrictions and personal matters, others participated through Zoom Video Conferencing. We had the distinct pleasure of having one of our charter members present during the anniversary, Brother Ollie Brown (A Fall 1950 initiate of the Alpha Phi Chapter) and our 50-Year Fraternity Member Brother David Lee (A Fall 58 initiate of the Delta Zeta Chapter) help cut the ceremonial cake with our latest initiate Brother Richard Onassiss Melton (A Spring 2019 initiate of FLAC). After sharing the history of FLAC, conducting the re-dedication ceremony, having lunch and fellowship with all brothers present, we concluded the day with a Senior Kappa Visit to the home of Brother Willie France (Fall 87 FLAC Initiate). Brother Willie R. France is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity “In Good Standing,” retired from Active Military service in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of Master Sergeant, and a Decorated Veteran with Combat Service in the Vietnam War. FLAC prides itself on our untiring Bond to our chapter membership, their commitment and representation of our Eastern Province, Kappa

Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, and the communities in which they live and serve. FLAC continuously reminds our senior chapter members that our eternal flame for brotherly love will not diminish, and we thank them by ensuring we take the time to give them flowers of appreciation while they are here to smell them in recognition of the positive impact they have had on our chapter’s past and future endeavors.

Phi Nu Pie

Rho Theta Chapter By: Paul W. Robinson, III On October 6, 2021, the Radford University Chapter, the Rho Theta of Kappa Alpha Psi held a Phi Nu Pie event on campus to raise funds for the chapters service initiatives. Students, faculty members and other staff members throughout the Radford University community paid to pie the Nupes! In addition to Polemarch Paul W. Robinson, III being present, the following chapter brothers attended: Japheth Bowser-Moore, Demetrius Walker, Breon Case and Quivon Crittenden. The event was successful and the chapter has added to it list of annual events to host on campus.

AF Golden Heritage Events Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder

On October 9, 2021, the Golden Heritage\Senior Kappa Committee of the Alexandria–Fairfax VA Alumni Chapter hosted a special Golden Heritage\Senior Kappa brunch produced by Brother James “Ike” Robinson with support from Brother Clifford Cooks at the AlexandriaFairfax VA Alumni Chapter Facility. Both brothers are 2021 inductees into Alexandria – Fairfax 50 Year Golden Heritage Membership. Participants for this festive event also included Eastern Province Senior Vice Polemarch and Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter Member Brother Richard Mattox, AlexandriaFairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter Polemarch Brother Kenneth Taylor, Past Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Dwight Thomas, and other past Eastern Province Officers, current and past chapter officers, Golden Heritage Members, Senior Kappas and Chapter members. The attendees were treated to a variety of freshly prepared brunch entrees including Brother Robinson’s signature “scrimps and grits” specialty and the event in this COVID-19 restricted environment was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Attendees at this, our final Golden Heritage\Senior Kappa event of the 2021 year included the Alexandria-Fairfax Polemarch, Brother Kenneth Taylor, and again was produced by Golden Heritage Brother James “Ike” Robinson. This was indeed a “fun-filled” occasion and by overwhelming consensus, the mike was not dropped and all “storytellers” were declared winners.

AF Winter Events

Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Tré Wilder During the winter months, AF held a few events which allowed the brothers to bond and break bread with one another along with their families. While the community is important and something focused on, AF also aims to include the families of the brothers as their importance to the existence of the chapter is evident. AF hosted the following events The Annual AF Holiday Party The Annual AF Holiday Party was a huge success as participation was emphasized. Good food, good vibes, and the White Elephant Gift exchange had a special surprise. With such a successful turnout, AF looks forward to the next AF Annual Holiday Party and see how to enhance our own success. We thank the family members and brothers who were able to attend!

Black Tie Gala Party The brothers of Alexandria-Fairfax (AF) Alumni Chapter continue their excellence and hard work by hosting the 35th Edition Black Tie Gala (BTG). The BTG and corresponding party were hosted on Friday, December 31st, 2021 at the Marriott Marquis, Washington DC. This year presented challenges like no other but it’s because of you, we were able to welcome our guests back and give them the experience of a

1st Class event. After one year of not having the gala, both chapters welcomed back over 500 guests. The evening started with an afternoon reception in which guests were taught the latest line dancing classes. Later that evening, the gala was held and local artist Brian Lanier and DJ Ezzy entertained our guests until 12 midnight when champagne toast and buffet breakfast was served. The night concluded with a late-night jazz set. To note, in attendance were the Eastern Province Polemarch and the Senior Province Vice Polemarch. A great time was had by all and guests were excited to be back at our traditional Black Tie Gala and Party. A sincere “Thank You” to Brother Morehead and all those who supported the 35th Edition Black Tie Gala and Party.

J5 We celebrate the founding of our noble clan, excuse me "Klan" as Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity was founded January 5th, 1911 on the campus of Indiana University Bloomington and chartered by 10 great men; Elder Watson Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong, John M. Lee, Henry T. Asher, Marcus P. Blakemore, Guy L. Grant, Paul W. Caine, George W. Edmonds, Ezra D. Alexander, and Edward G. Irvin. We thank these men for not only allowing us the ability to carry on their legacy but create and furthering our own. We thank them so much the brothers of Kappa treat the founding date as a holiday; even termed the founding date as "J5". Rain, sleet, snow, the brothers get together and celebrate "J5" annually amongst their own chapters and other chapters. Another wonderful way to continue Brotherhood and further your Kappa network.

On January 4th, the fraternity hosted the 2nd Annual J5 Kappathon, purposed to support our (AF's) undergraduate chapters. The event was live-streamed and our Polemarch Brother Kenneth Taylor present our donation of over one-thousand dollars raised in less than 24 hours from members of the chapter. During Polemarch Taylor's presentation, he informed everyone that AF has always had a culture of supporting our undergraduate chapters. As you know the Kappathon event was one day, but the donations are ongoing. I am happy to report that the chapter has almost doubled their initial donation, to include additional monies that were directly donated by brothers such as Walter Smiley, Rodney Robinson, Ike Robinson, and Floyd Sartin to name a few. Additionally, the Polemarch reminded the brothers that AF is “Always First.” Once again, leading the charge and supporting our Grand Polemarch. Thank you, Brothers.

John T. Lanier, Jr. 14th Annual Kappa Alpha Psi Virginia Legislative Day Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Jer'Mykeal McCoy

On January 17th, 2022, the Eastern Province held its John T. Lanier, Sr. 14th Annual Virginia Legislative Day. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our event was held virtually for the second year in a row. During our program, we had more than 80 attendees, which was the largest attendance in the history of the event.

The purpose of our annual day is to discuss national, state, and local political and public policy issues with our members and Kappa Leaguers. The virtual event started with a presentation to Silhouette Joyce Lanier naming the annual event in honor of her late-husband and 23rd Eastern Province Polemarch John T. Lanier, Sr. It was under his mandate that Virginia Legislative Day was started. This forum also gives our members an opportunity to engage and ask questions of elected officials on topics such as civil rights, economic opportunity, healthcare & essential services, housing, education & supporting our children, environmental justice & transit, and public safety. Especially important this year were Voting Rights, Redistricting, and an update on Covid-19 variants and risks in the African-American community. Our distinguished guest speakers included the 29th Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Charles E. Exum, Jr. who brought us greetings. U.S. Congressman and Brother A. Donald McEachin spoke on national issues including a call to action on voting rights. The Honorable Delegate Lamont Bagby (HD74), Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Chair (VLBC), discussed VLBC’s legislative agenda during the General Assembly. A Covid-19 presentation on the variants and vaccination rates and their impact on our communities by Dr. Danny Avula, Director of the Richmond City and Henrico County Health Departments. There was a VLBC forum with members and staff. Those elected officials were Delegate Lamont Bagby, (HD74), Delegate Jeff Bourne (HD71), and Sierra Lewis, Legislative Assistant for Del. Delores McQuinn (HD70). Our call to action speaker was Honorable Brother Dr. Wes Bellamy, Former Vice-Mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia. He challenged brothers to stay engaged and reach out to overlooked youth. He encouraged the Kappa Leaguers to learn themselves before setting sights to change the world. Brother Gregory Hopkins, Gun Violence Prevention Coordinator, discussed the Commonwealth’s efforts to prevent gun

deaths. Brother Martin Raxton, President & CEO Krimson Political Action Council, discussed the PAC’s mission to support candidates and issues that provide fair and equal access under the law for underserved communities. Brother Reginald Carter, Richmond Planet License Plate Initiative, gave updates on his efforts to get a license plate in honor of the storied publication. Our closing remarks were by National Political Chairman, Brother Britton L. Smith. We ended our meeting celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the song Happy Birthday, by Stevie Wonder.

The Inaugural Leon Walker Memorial Golf Classic

On Thursday, September 30, 2021, the Kappa Foundation of Prince George's County, Inc. hosted its Inaugural Leon Walker Memorial Golf Classic. The event was held at the Oak Creek Golf Club in Upper Marlboro, MD. 116 golfers of varying skill levels registered for the sold-out affair, which featured a glorious round of 18 holes and a phenomenal awards luncheon. Crimson and Cream stretched as far as the eye could see. After a year and a half of seclusion, quarantine, and isolation, brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and our guests, finally had an opportunity to fellowship in the name of one of our most esteemed chapter brothers, Brother Leon Walker. We memorialize him in a way that he would have loved best – playing golf and raising money for the residents of Prince George's County, MD. The tournament has also was named in honor of him. Brother Walker was a Spring 1984 initiate of The Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (E). He was a legend and a giant in our Chapter and within our Fraternity. As a member of the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter, he was very instrumental in establishing a 501(c)(3) foundation for the Chapter.

As one of his most notable fundraising ventures, Brother Walker created and implemented our Chapter's first golf tournament in the late 1980s to raise funds for the Chapter and support its many ventures. For this very reason, we felt it imperative to resurrect our tournament and name it after him. Brother Walker transitioned into Chapter Invisible on April 3, 2020, and will forever be regarded as a pioneer within our ranks. The tournament, played in a Captain's Choice Scramble, saw the winning team hoist the 1st place trophy with a final score of 54 (-18). There were also men's and women's longest drives, respectively, and closest to the pin contests from the event. Dixon Golf, an equipment manufacturing company, also blessed us with their presence and brought a couple of golf challenges to help spice up the affair. The tournament committee, made up of brothers from the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter, operated with one goal in mind – creating an event where the participants would have a great time on the course and with one another. The feedback from several of the event participants was incredibly positive and encouraging, so much so that we've already begun preparing for next year's event! We had over 35 sponsors contribute to the affair. Nissan of Bowie, owned by Brother Damon Lester (Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Alumni, 2011), served as the title sponsor. Other notable sponsors were Jim Beam, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Jersey Mike's Subs, Starbucks, and Golf Galaxy, to name a few. With the total support of our sponsors, vendors, golf participants, volunteers, and Oak Creek Club staff, we were able to raise nearly $20,000 in profits to help fund our foundation goals and ventures in Prince George's County The event was attended by a few special guests and dignitaries, such as former

Washington Football Team Quarterback, Jason Campbell; Silhouette of Brother Leon Walker, Reverend Goldie Walker and his daughters, Cheryl Walker and Stacey Turner; Past Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Linwood Smith, Jr. (Delta Nu, 1976) and current Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Charles Exum, Jr. (Epsilon Sigma, 1990). Members of other Greek-letter organizations also joined in for the festivities. Those who supported the affair included members of Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, and Omega Psi Phi. The Kappa Foundation of Prince George's County, Inc.is a national 501(C)(3) organization that promotes charitable, youth development, and educational activities to Prince George's County, Maryland students. The Foundation is committed to providing scholarships and financial aid to worthy individuals residing in Prince George's County. The Foundation desires to also promote the general welfare by providing services that will continue to encourage the development of Prince George's County residents. The Foundation is charged with providing educational activities for its Guide Right program activities, making contributions toward civic improvements in the county, in conjunction with other county agencies, and providing technical services to enhance the skills of Prince George's County senior citizens. All proceeds derived from the golf event will be used to support the following Kappa Foundation activities: Educational scholarships to worthy individuals from Prince George's County, MD Educational activities for the Foundation & Guide Right program activities Contributions toward civic improvements in Prince George's County, MD, in conjunction with other county agencies Technical services to enhance the skills of county senior citizens

Undergraduate Chapter Spotlight Fall 2021 Krimsmon Krusaders - "The Rebirth" Eta Sigma Chapter By: Cleve Packer, Sr.

On November 20, 2021, four outstanding young men were initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Eta Sigma Chapter at the University of Virginia. Their line name is “Krimson Krusaders”. Crusaders are fighters, people who make an impassioned and sustained effort to bring about social and political change. These new initiates are #1 Carlos Rodriguez, a Third Year, from The Bronx, NY majoring in Government and his line name is “Elysian” which means those divinely inspired: creative. Next is #2 Roberto Bryan, III, a Fourth Year, from Fayetteville, NC majoring in Engineering and his line name is “Sakrosankt” which means too important or valuable to be interfered with. He was also Line President. The #3 is Cleve Packer, Jr., a Third Year, from Charlottesville, VA majoring in History and his line name is “Retronym” which means continuing the legacy (he is a third generation Kappa man). Senior Kappa Senior Kappa Committee Report

Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter By: Troy Stewart The Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter participated in a myriad of activities this fall. Some of those activities consisted of Senior Kappa IT training, where the senior brothers received information on the latest and greatest tips and tricks when using their mobile phones and computers. They also participated heavily in assisting with Chapter Reclamation efforts to bring brothers back into the fraternity and the chapter.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to rework our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, where we’d normally get together and prepare food baskets for needy families and deliver them. As an attempt to stay safe and keep others safe, the committee decided to disperse grocery store Gift Cards for the Thanksgiving Food Drive, mostly from donations from the brothers of Hyattsville/Landover. This enabled families to shop for the things that they needed themselves. The Senior Kappas also stepped up and hosted the Chapter Holiday Mixer, which enabled the chapter and our guests to bring the holidays in right. Because the Thanksgiving food drive was such a success, the chapter with the help of the Senior Kappas, decided to duplicate its efforts and host a Christmas Holiday Gift Card Food Drive. This fraternal year began with a reorganized Senior Kappa Committee under our new Polemarch Brother Richard C. Baker. Polemarch Baker asked Brother Lawrence Robinson to chair the Senior Kappa Committee. The Senior Kappa Committee meets twice monthly, every first Tuesday of the month for planning and the second Tuesday for a Senior Kappa Luncheon. The first meeting of the Senior Kappa Committee (SKC) was a joint in-person and Zoom meeting. It was determined that the priority for our Senior Kappa members was to get some training on how to access Zoom on the computer and cell phone and how to access and use Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. With approximately 150 financial members in our chapter, 60 of those members (60) are Senior Kappas. The SKC continuously invites unfinancial and non-affiliated brothers to join us at the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter by attending special reclamation events or joining us for our monthly lunch, which takes place at a local restaurant. The Senior Kappa Committee assisted with the Chapter’s annual Thanksgiving Holiday

Food Gift Card distribution. Funds from the National Senior Kappa Endowment Fund and donations from the chapter were used to help needy families in Prince George’s County put food on their tables for Thanksgiving. Senior Kappa Brothers helped with the Gift Card distribution. The Senior Kappa committee hosted the 1st Annual Chapter ‘Holiday Mixer.’ Chapter Brothers and their significant others spent the evening celebrating the holidays, socializing, and dancing while enjoying spirited music. As an added bonus, we also held a holiday raffle, with door prizes and a grand prize winner of $100. The Senior Kappas also assisted with the Chapter’s Christmas Food Drive distribution of gift cards the week before Christmas, assisting the committee with their distribution efforts of food gift cards to needy senior citizens of the county. The Senior Kappa Committee of the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter is a very energetic and socially active group. They look forward to doing great things for the chapter and the community it serves. God bless all Senior Kappas!

January 7, 2022– Members of the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter coordinated a special holiday visit to see their chapter brother and Senior Kappa, Sherley Stuart. Stuart lives in an assisted living facility in Roanoke, Virginia. A 1977 initiate of the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter, Stuart was a loyal and hardworking member of the chapter and a legendary coach at William Fleming High School in Roanoke, Virginia.

Franklin-Southampton (VA) Alumni Chapter By: Charlie Harris

On December 11, 2021, sponsors dedicated a state historical marker issued by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VA-DHR) that highlights one legacy of enslaved preacher Nat Turner’s revolt in Southampton County, after the uprising the severed head of a Black man was displayed on a post and left to decay, giving rise to the name of Blackhead Signpost Road, which was recently renamed. The marker was dedicated during a public ceremony at Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 30188 Shiloh Road, Boykins, VA. After the formal ceremony, attendees visited the marker, located at the intersection of Route 35 and Meherrin Road in Courtland, to unveil the sign. Event speakers were Carl Faison, of the Southampton Co. Board of Supervisors; Chief Walt “Red Hawk” Brown of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe of Southampton Co.; Renna Ebron, of Lambda Psi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa

Alpha Sorority; Timothy Mays, of FranklinSouthampton (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; and former chair of the VA Board of Historic Resources Dr. Colita Nichols Fairfax. Additionally, Sylvia Copeland, from the Office of Congressman Donald McEachin, will read a message from Rep. McEachin. Following Nat Turner’s revolt in August 1831, “white residents and militias retaliated by murdering an indeterminable number of African Americans,” according to the marker (see picture). At the intersection where the marker is located, the severed head of a Black man, who may have been an enslaved blacksmith named Alfred—who was not implicated in any revolt killings was placed on a post “to terrorize others and deter future uprisings against slavery,” the marker states. In 2021, the name was changed to Signpost Road, and the Virginia Board of Historic Resources, which is authorized to designate new state historical markers, approved the marker for manufacture and installation earlier this year. Its sponsor, Citizens Create Change, covered the marker’s manufacturing costs. DHR markers are erected not to “honor” their subjects but rather to educate and inform the public about a person, place, or event of regional, state, or national importance.

The Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter Political and Social Action Committee continued its Power Hour Series with a Kappa Men Running for Office in DC roundtable discussion with Mayoral Candidate Brother Rodney “Red” Grant and Ward 5 Council Candidate Gordon A. Fletcher. The brothers were able to introduce themselves to the residents of DC and give insight into why they are seeking political office in DC.

Chapter Invisible Past Eastern Province Board Member and Charter Member of Danville (VA) Alumni enters the Chapter Invisible Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter By: DeAndre Howard

Brother P. Edward Thomas, a spring 1971 initiate of the Virginia State University Chapter, the Alpha Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi (E) entered the Chapter Invisible on January 3, 2022. Brother Thomas had just celebrated 50 years in our noble clan on April 23, 2021, and he worked tirelessly for the fraternity and the chapter for much of his life. During his time, he served the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter faithfully as a charter member, the 4th Chapter Polemarch, the 9th Chapter Polemarch, and the 12th Chapter Polemarch. Brother Thomas was serving the chapter in the role of Keeper of Exchequer at the time of his death. In addition to serving on the local chapter, Brother Thomas has served the fraternity nationally as a member of the Grand Chapter Social Action Committee and the Grand Chapter Constitution and Statutes Committee. In the Eastern Province, Brother Thomas was the recipient of the 2017 Pillar of the Province Award. Additionally, he served the province as a past alumni board member (Region IV), past province social action committee chairman, past province director of logistics, and past operating assistant to both the 23rd and 24th Eastern Province Polemarchs. Brother Thomas was laid to his eternal resting place on Monday, January 10, 2022. The funeral was held at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home in Danville, Virginia. Twenty brothers from the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter and the Radford University Chapter, the Rho Theta were present to perform the private Kappa memorial service and commemorate Brother Thomas' life. Brother Thomas was a true Kappa giant across all levels of the fraternity and he will certainly be missed.
