A Message from the Province Polemarch

Dear Brother: Province Reporter Brother DeAndre Howard and his committee have done another stellar job with producing the Kappa Khronicle! The committee continues to raise the bar by producing the Khronicle Quarterly; highlighting the best that our Province has to offer. To give you a perspective of the momentum of the Khronicle, let’s us examine. The first issue of the Khronicle under the leadership of Brother Howard, the committee received less than 15 submissions across the province. As of the fourth issue, the Khronicle is receiving approximately 40 to 50 submissions. This has caused a very good problem. The committee has so many quality submissions that they have to carefully review to ensure all submissions are in the standard format. This has also added additional work for the committee but has also increased the level of quality submissions. This is the secret sauce that makes the Khronicle the success it has enjoyed. And because of this, we continue to keep the brothers informed regarding relevant activities taking place in the province; and provide a means of sharing timely updates pertaining to activities, especially at the local level. Brothers have also expressed an interest in receiving copies of the Khronicle for their archives. The committee has explored and has made this option available for a nominal fee. As it has been stated, we must continue to spread the news of our good works which has been a great benefit to our society. To quote Shirley Chisholm “Service is the Rent We Pay for the Privilege of Living on this Earth”. As we go forth, let us endeavor to motivate others, to emphasize the importance of effective leadership skills, and to reflect on Kappa Alpha Psi’s time-honored recipe for ACHIEVEMENT: by inspiring service in the public interest. I sincerely hope that the material contained in this quarterly edition will be studied very carefully and put to the greatest possible use. Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi: A Brief History In December of 1925, the fifth Grand Polemarch Earl B. Dickerson presided over the 15th Grand Chapter Meeting. Among the actions taken by the Delegates assembled was the transition from Regions to Provinces. With that action the Flagship Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was established. John M. Marquess was appointed as the first Eastern Province Polemarch. Brother Marquess was a native of Arkansas and a graduate of Fisk University (1902) and Dartmouth College (1904). During his time at Dartmouth he sang on the college Choir and Glee Club and was a member of the Varsity Track Team. By profession Marquess was an educator, teaching and leading a number of schools prior to serving as President of the Colored Agricultural and Normal University (which would become Langston University). Brother Marquess was the first in a long line of achievers that would serve as Eastern Province Polemarch. At the time the Eastern Province was established records indicate that it was comprised of four chapters- Epsilon, Xi, Baltimore (MD) Alumni, which served Baltimore City and County, and Washington (DC) Alumni. In contrast to the static boundaries, we’ve come to know, the boundaries of the province were amorphous and incorporated at one time Chapters from New York to North Carolina. Considering the current boundaries of the Eastern Province, the first Chapter was the Howard University Chapter, the Xi (E) of Kappa Alpha Psi which was chartered on December 27, 1920. The second overall and first Alumni Chapter was the Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter (E) chartered on July 15, 1921. The second Alumni Chapter and third Chapter overall was the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (E) which was chartered on October 27, 1924. But no matter the area the Eastern Province has been home to achievers and leaders. The East has given Kappa five Grand Polemarchs (James E. Scott, W. Henry “Stud” Greene, W. Thomas Carter, and Howard L. Tutman Jr.) and numerous Laurel Wreath Laureates, Elder Watson Diggs Awardees, and Guy Levis Grant Awardees. The Eastern Province is the epitome of achievement. In four years, the Eastern Province will celebrate its centennial and with it the recognition of its history of leadership as it has chartered a strong course for our Noble Clan.

MESSAGE FROM THE PROVINCE REPORTER

My Brothers: I am proud to bring you the 4th and final publication of the Eastern Province Khronicle for the 2021-2022 fraternal year. The review and editing process is a very laborious process and your committee members have volunteered to assume this responsibility, without compensation, so I wanted to publicly acknowledge and thank them again for their service to the committee and to the province.

As we look towards the 2022-23 fraternal year, I have asked the members of the Province Reporter Committee to share some advice and/or feedback with the chapters that could possibly be helpful for future submissions. Please enjoy their words of wisdom. "The advice that I have for chapters is to have a goal to submit an article every quarter and actually map it out. Additionally, chapter leadership should look at the chapter reporter as a strategic partner as opposed to just another position that has to be filled like the chapter’s strategus and lieutenant strategus. Navy Recognizes Brother Dennis as a Trailblazer Gaithersburg/Rockville (MD) Alumni By: Pedro Arguello

Brother Robert Dews of the Annapolis Alumni Chapter was recognized as one of the recipients of the Congressman Elijah Cummings “Few of the Many” award for his dedicated service to the community in the city of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The award was sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Executive and the Caucus of African American Leaders of Anne Arundel County. Brother Dews is a retired Navy Captain and was initiated in the spring of 1986 at the Alpha Sigma chapter of Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. He serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Eastern Province. (Pictured with Steuart Pittman, County Executive, Anne Arundel County, MD). Honored and humbled to be selected as one of the recipients of the "Few of the Many" Congressman Elijah Cummings award. Special thanks to County Executive Steuart Pittman, Anne Arundel County, the Caucus of African American Leaders, and Alderwoman Sheila Finlayson. Annapolis (MD) Alumni is especially proud of Brother Dews for his Achievement. We salute you.

During Black History Month, the United States Navy featured Brother and Commanding Officer Shaun E. Dennis Sr. (Gaithersburg-Rockville (MD) Alumni, Spring 2017) as a trailblazer. In addition to Brother Dennis, this campaign featured three other African American men who are serving as Commanders of various ships throughout the Navy. It included images of Brother Dennis along with the other Commanders as well as a video featuring each discussing their service to this country. Brother Dennis is currently assigned as the Commanding Officer, of the USS STERETT (DDG 104) where he commands over 500 sailors stationed out of San Diego, California. His prior assignment was as Executive Officer onboard the USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55). This recent acknowledgment of Brother Dennis’ achievements is just another in a distinguished career in the Navy which includes decorations and awards such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4), and the Combat Action Ribbon. Additionally, he is authorized to wear various unit and campaign awards. In addition, on August 28, 2021, the City of Baltimore, Maryland renamed the 1600 Block of 25th Street in his honor, and is it now “C.O. Shaun E. Dennis Sr. Way.”

Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Member Brother Darrell Watson, Ballou High School Band Leader Receives $100K from Ellen DeGeneres

In Brother Watson’s words, “what I want to instill in my students is the band is more than just music and marching, it’s life’s lessons.” He also noted one of his proudest moments was becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Diamonds to Brother Darrell Watson!

Fort Washington (MD) Alumni By: Dr. Troy Joyner Brother Darrell Watson, a Spring 2022 initiate of the Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapter, recently appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to receive a donation check for his work as the Ballou High School Band Leader. Brother Watson has been a continuous guest on her show since 2007 and has received donations totaling over $300K which led to his band growing from 20 to 59 band members. Brother Watson has spent the last 27 years at Ballou High School fulfilling roles as a general music teacher, band director, choir director, and fine arts department chair. Under Brother Watson's leadership, the award-winning Ballou High School Marching Band has made several prominent appearances. The band has performed at two presidential inaugural parades, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Miss America Parade, Good Morning America, and the Today Show. His most recent accomplishment is his band’s performance for DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and recording artist Pharrell Williams as they announced Pharrell’s Juneteenth Music Festival on the National Mall. Brother Watson’s lifelong love for music started as a choir member in elementary school and continued through high school. One of his greatest achievements was receiving a music scholarship from the University of the District of Columbia.

The Senior and 50 Year Brothers have resumed their bi-weekly breakfast at IHOP and on Thursday, April 7, 2022, they came out for their usual fellowship over breakfast. Polemarch Craig Sims presented Brother John W. Crooms (Alpha Iota, Spr’48) with his award from Baltimore Alumni’s centennial celebration, where the chapter recognized brothers with over 60 years of dedication and commitment to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Sims encourages all brothers, “Regardless of how many years you have in Kappa, to come out and fellowship with our senior brothers who are ready to share their knowledge, wisdom, and history of the “The Benchmark" and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.”

NAC SharpC Unsung Hero Awardee Norfolk (VA) Alumni By: Skyler Carroll

On April 16, 2022, the brothers of the Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chapter came out to show support for chapter brother Derrick Paramore as he was the recipient of the 2022 SharpC Unsung Hero Award. Brother Paramore has worked day in and day out as the Norfolk Kappa League Chair and as a Chapter Board Member. Brother Paramore takes pride in working with the Guide Right committee to help the Kappa League by organizing fundraisers for future events, providing guest speakers in different careers, and creating fun fellowship moments for the students to enjoy. His hard work and dedication to our future young leaders and to achievement in every field of human endeavor is why Brother Derrick Paramore is an unsung hero.

Pillar of the Province Award Annapolis (MD) Alumni By: Ronald Stokes

Brother Ernest Anderson (Epsilon Sigma ’90) of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter was presented the Pillar of the Province Award at the Eastern Province Council by Eastern Province Polemarch Charles Exum. The Pillar of the Province Award is presented to a brother selected by the Province Polemarch in accordance with the following criteria:

The brother whose involvement, participation, and commitment to Kappa Alpha Psi is evident throughout the Eastern Province as in his local chapter; often this brother is not cited for his contributions to the fraternity, but rather, he may work behind the scenes in effecting local and regional activities in Kappa Alpha Psi. The Brothers of Annapolis (MD) Alumni are indeed proud of Brother Anderson’s Achievement.

Region IV Undergraduate Board Member Eta Sigma By: Lewis Johnson

Cleve H. Packer Jr. was initiated via Fall 2021- MTA Eta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Cleve is a third-year undergraduate in the College of Arts and Sciences, pursuing a degree in history. His involvements at the university include cultivating community throughout grounds and the Charlottesville/Albemarle community. As a resident advisor, Cleve fosters an inclusive community through programs such as Yoga, Capture the Flag, and other activities within the Lambeth Community. He specifically oversees 32 upperclassmen residents at Lambeth. Cleve is the Vice-Chair for Candidates for the University Board of Elections where he helps candidates with running for offices for 10 schools (including graduate schools) at UVA. In addition, he is a transfer peer advisor (TSPA) where he helps transfer students navigate the university. Cleve is also in the Class of 2023 Meriwether Lewis Institute for Citizen Engagement Fellow. Cleve is a member of the Collegiate 100 at the University of Virginia. He also is Young Life Leader at Jack Jouett Middle School.

Most recently, he won the Transfer Student of Year Award from the NAACP and BSA (black student alliance) at the annual Black Ball for his character and impact on the university community.

H. H. Holloway Scholarship Recipient, Carlos Rodriguez Jr. is a 3rd year American Studies major at the University of Virginia. He is from The Bronx, New York and is a First-Gen/LowIncome. Carlos is the son of Ecuadorian Immigrants and the eldest of 2 sons. Carlos is the Vice Polemarch of the Eta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is also the Art & Empowerment Chair for PLUMAS (Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society). Carlos is a member for the UVA Chapter of the NAACP, as well as an Upperclassmen Resident Advisor (RA) for Housing & Residence Life, Peer Mentor for the Peer Mentoring Program at UVA, a Fellow for the Meriwether Lewis Institute for Citizen Leadership (a competitive multi-year fellowship at the university), member of Phi Sigma Pi Honor Fraternity, and a UVA Mutual Aid Social Media volunteer. A few of Carlos’ past involvements include the Latinx Leadership Institute at the University of Virginia and CHISPA (Charlottesville Initiative for Social Practice through the Arts) Internship with a nonprofit called Creciendo Juntos, and various Poetry and Spoken Word groups across the university.

James T. O’Neal Wins 2022 Black Engineer of the Year STEM Award For National COVID-19 Research and Response Woodbridge (VA) Alumni By: Dakhalfani Boyd

Brother James T. O’Neal, a Spring 2017 initiate of the Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter, is recognized as an Outstanding Black Engineer supporting the Federal Government.

Administration (FAA), and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and administrative offices of the U.S. courts. He co-authored the Veterans Affairs (VA) cloud computing strategy to allow the department charged with providing healthcare services to eligible military veterans to effectively transition to cloud-based enterprise services. Additionally, Brother O’Neal helped manage the FDA’s business management team acquisition program. He also co-developed the federal acquisition simulation tool (FAST) to promote efficiencies in federal procurement processes. Diamonds to Brother O’Neal and the Woodbridge (VA) Alumni Chapter. Keep achieving!

Brother O’Neal was selected for and awarded the Outstanding Technical Contribution in Industry Award at the 36th Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) STEM Global Competitive Conference for his significant contributions while working in Operation Warp Speed to produce and distribute the COVID-19 vaccination across the nation. As a health and life sciences principal at MITRE, Brother O’Neal leads projects that help the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services enhance the health of all Americans. For COVID19, this meant working on behalf of Operation Warp Speed and, later, the White House COVID19 Response Team to ensure a national stockpile of COVID-19 convalescent plasma and the utilization of monoclonal antibodies were available. Brother O’Neal has enduring technical contributions at MITRE, a not-for-profit corporation operating federally funded R&D centers on behalf of U.S. government sponsors. According to his colleagues, the impact of his leadership has been felt across the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Food and Drug

Brother Carl Brown, current Chairman of Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (E) (FLAC) 50 Year Brother/ Senior Brother Committee was recognized for his untiring service to our Chapter during our 2022 Eastern Province Council on March 17-20, 2022, with the Senior Kappa Chapter Award 1st Place – Medium Chapter. Brother Carl Brown, Spring 2009 FLAC Initiate, consistently represents the excellence of Brotherhood and Service.

Brother Carl Brown has served as Keeper of Records, Vice Polemarch, and Polemarch of the 13th Administration, and numerous Committee Chairman including fundraising and community service for FLAC. Brother Carl Brown currently serves as our Eastern Province Assistant Keeper of Records, Province Vice-Chairman Senior Kappa Committee, Province Executive Secretary Senior Kappa Committee, and Province MTA Committee Member. This is not just a resume of fraternal service but a reflection of the heart, mind, and "kommitment" of a Good Man. Brother Carl Brown’s recent application submission seeking funds from our Senior Kappa Affairs Endowment Fund (SKAEF) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated was approved providing a grant for our Chapter initiative of support to Seniors within our community by way of donations to our Hopewell Convalescent Center, and Virginia Sitter and Barefoot Veterans Care Center. Our FLAC 50 Year Brother/ Senior Brother Committee supports Senior Golf events, Senior Christmas Celebrations, and Senior Breakfast Gatherings. Brother Carl Brown facilitates the communications that keep our Senior Kappa’s informed and engaged with mentoring our Chapter Membership Training Academy (MTA) aspiring members, new FLAC Initiates, and Chapter membership. Our Chapter is currently improving our internal and external mediums of communication with direct input from our Senior Kappa’s to ensure historical relevance is garnered. These events continue to honor our Senior Kappa’s and community Seniors and provide opportunities for the sharing of Senior knowledge and experience bridging the gap between youth and elderly keeping our past and present as lifelong learning opportunities to facilitate productive future endeavors. Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Member Brother Maynard Smith Appointed as Business Engagement Manager for US Wind Fort Washington (MD) Alumni By: Dr. Troy Joyner Brother Smith is at the forefront of wind technology and sees a future largely powered by the wind! Brother Maynard Smith is a Fall 1978 initiate of the Fayetteville State University Chapter, the Epsilon Beta of Kappa Alpha Psi. Brother Smith was recently appointed Business Engagement Manager for Maryland-based US Wind. He is part of a leadership team that is focused on “fueling the future, naturally,” as the company’s tagline so aptly puts it. He has a front seat on the ground floor of wind technology to build a cleaner, more sustainable future - a lofty endeavor. But that is just part of his mission. Brother Smith is utilizing his expertise in opening doors to more opportunities for minorities and women. In a press release recently issued by US Wind, the company announced that Brother Smith and two of his colleagues are charged with ensuring diversity on multiple levels - from outside vendors and contractors to community engagement and education.

Brother Smith elaborates that the company continues to build the country’s first large-scale wind farm with 22 turbines planted in the Atlantic about 13 miles from Ocean City, Maryland. More wind farms are planned in the future for the Eastern Seaboard, including ones off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. “To me, everything about this is exciting. It will lower our carbon emissions and is a part of the new green technology,” he says. “Generations from now will set the standards for the U.S. It’s thrilling.” Brother Smith has a proven track record of achievement. Prior to joining US Wind, Smith was integral in ensuring that the MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino not only met but exceeded Maryland’s Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) requirements, has also worked on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project, and the 2020 Black Farmers Cooperative. Giving back to his community is also important to Brother Smith. He volunteers on several boards, including the Family Justice Center and Progressive Life Center of Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Visit Baltimore, the city’s tourism, and convention organization. Also, he was just elected as president of the Fayetteville State University D.C. Alumni Chapter. Brother Smith was an advisor for the CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, which was held Feb. 21-26, 2022, in Baltimore. “It was an exciting time had by all,” he said. Kappas Establish a $100,000 Scholarship Fund at Hampton University Beta Chi By: Clarence F. Nelson, Jr.

Once again, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is making history at this HBCU by being the first Greek- letter organization to create a $100,000 scholarship fund to benefit its students! On behalf of the BX-Ronald R. Young Endowed Scholarship Committee, including Hamptonians/ Brothers Stephen N. Lawrence, Ph.D., BX '67; Gary B. Hunter, BX '81; John B, Gates, Jr., Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni, '95; and Brother Clarence F. Nelson, Jr., BX '69, an 18month fundraising campaign, and October 8, 2021 HU Homecoming Celebration were successfully planned and executed. Brothers from around the country representing all twelve provinces either played a role in the KAPPAYOUNG Golf Classic, sent gifts to Hampton University in their names or provinces' names, or sent their "best wishes!"

To date, the HU KAPPA- YOUNG Scholarship Fund has received $145,000! Brother Young, an April 26, 1969, BX initiate, a proud honor graduate of the Class of 1971 and alumnus of Syracuse University, family man, avid golfer, corporate executive, member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, The 28th International Grand Polemarch, and 69th wearer of the Laurel Wreath Pin, was found to be deserving of having such a scholarship named in his honor!

Community Service Christmas in April

Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni By: Marcus Smith

On April 30, 2022, The Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter participated in "Christmas In April" in Mt. Rainer, MD. The brothers were asked to assist an elderly gentleman with sprucing up his home and taking care of some neglected home maintenance. The following tasks were completed: painting the garage and exterior doors, planting bushes, and pruning overgrown trees; cleaning up yard trash; sanding and painting bars on windows. The resident was most appreciative and thanked the chapter brothers.

G-Rock Blood Drive

Gaithersburg/Rockville (MD) Alumni By: Pedro Arguello On March 26, 2022, the Brothers of the Gaithersburg/Rockville (MD) (G-Rock) Alumni Chapter with the Ladies of the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta held a blood drive with the American Red Cross to help support those in the community with sickle cell. Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville, Maryland was also a co-sponsor and provided its facilities to serve as the location of the blood drive.

Our other sponsors included the Montgomery County African American Health Program, Faces of our Children, the National PanHellenic Council of Montgomery County, and the Maryland Sickle Cell Disease Association. Thanks to the efforts of event Chair Brother Berkely Davenport (G-Rock, Spring 2020) we were able to exceed our numbers for those registered to give blood and attract several members of the community, including those from other Greek-letter organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha and the Hermanos form Lambda Upsilon Lambda. We exceeded our goal of 40 pints of blood and got 46. Of those pints, 24 were donated by African Americans representing 52% of the donations collected and those donations will be earmarked for those with sickle cell. Thanks to these donations 120 potential lives can be saved.

No Family Left Offline Spring Technology Collection Day Baltimore (MD) Alumni By: Wesley Wood

The Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. partnered with the Baltimore County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and PCs for People on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 10am-1pm at the Winfield P.A.L. Center, 8304 Carlson Lane in Windsor Mill to collect old, unwanted tech devices for the No Family Left Offline Spring Technology Collection Day. The goal of the event was to help people become economically selfsufficient and to close the digital divide by collecting, refurbishing, and distributing the equipment back into the community. The day included refreshments and a deejay by BAC’s own Brother Andre “DJ Andre” Thomas. Congratulations on a job well done are extended to the ladies of the Baltimore County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Brother Wesley Wood and his committee.

Baltimore Silhouettes Shoe Drive Fundraiser Baltimore (MD) Alumni By: Wesley Wood

The Baltimore Silhouette’s has partnered with Funds2Orgs to fundraise by simply collecting and repurposing shoes from our community.

Funds2Orgs provides all collection and marketing materials with no out-of-pocket costs and then issues a check for all the shoes. The collected shoes then get shipped to micro-entrepreneurs worldwide so they can sell the shoes in their local markets and help raise themselves out of poverty. The shoe drive fundraisers support over 4,000 families of micro-enterprise partners, with the majority of them being women-owed. The micro-enterprise industry represents one of the most effective ways to lift many families out of poverty in devastated economies. Most people do not know that 70% of the global population uses repurposed shoes and clothing; that’s over 5 billion people! Community Service: Teacher Appreciation Week Baltimore (MD) Alumni By: Wesley Wood

On Thursday, May 5, 2022 the Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter hosted a caterer luncheon for “Teachers Appreciation Week” at Booker T. Washington Middle School, 1301 McCulloh St, Baltimore, MD 21217.

Teachers and staff enjoyed a hot catered meal provided by The Ross Caterers and served by members of the 52nd Administration: Polemarch Craig Sims, 1st Vice Polemarch Don Ervin, Keeper of Records Devron Dickens, Keeper of Exchequer Melvin Howard, Board Member Everett Jordan, and Chief of Staff Duane Elliott. Principal Rashida Ford was appreciative of all the support and services BAC provides throughout the year and gave special acknowledgment and thanks to Brother Dickens for continuing to foster relationships at Booker T. Washington.

Georgetown East Elementary School Annapolis (MD) Alumni By: Ronald Stokes

On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the Brothers of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter presented Andree Dillard, Principal of Georgetown East Elementary School with a donation of $1,500.00. The donation was to assist with the school's Food Pantry which helps to feed families of students and to help purchase much-needed supplies for the students.

Mr. Dillard, though not a Kappa is a member of a D9 organization. He wrote the following in a thank you note dated March 9, 2022. "This letter acknowledges the donation of $1,500.00 from the men of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to Georgetown East Elementary School. Due to the generosity of the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., we will be able to provide learning opportunities and new experiences that will enhance and build on their background knowledge on specific topics that our students need to achieve optimum academic and social success. On behalf of the students of Georgetown East Elementary, thank you to the men of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc." On April 2, 2022, the Brothers of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter marched down West Street in Annapolis as part of the MLK Jr. Parade. Brothers carrying our chapter banner lead our entourage followed by a crimson and cream SUV with our chapter logo. Our chapter participates in the parade annually and as always, we were proud to participate this year and represent THE NUPES!!! Thanks to all the brothers who marched.

Adolescent Mental Health Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni By: Marcus Smith

On April 16, 2022, The Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter hosted an Adolescent Mental Health Seminar via zoom. The topics of the seminar were common mental health conditions, depression, anxiety, signs of illness, and the importance of treatment. The seminar was coordinated by Brother Kenyatta Kerr and conducted by Ms. Kristen Everett. There were 47 members of the community that participated in the presentation. The seminar was well-received, and the members of the community appreciated the subject matter and expressed an interest in having further discussions.

On Thursday, May 5, 2022, the brothers of Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter and some of our Kappa Leaguers came together for our annual Mother's Day Dinner. The senior residents of Bowman Place located in Annapolis, MD were treated to a Mother’s Day meal, bingo, and musical entertainment courtesy of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As can be seen, a good time was had by all. Kudos to Brother Alan Griffin for organizing this event and thanks to all the brothers who came out to assist.

On Thursday April 7, 2022, Brother Gregory Browne, participated in the Office of Community Schools Food Distribution hosted at the Samuel P. Massie, Jr. Academy in Forestville, MD. The school is named for our chapter invisible brother, Dr. Samuel P. Massie. Dr. Massie was a member of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter and a very accomplished scientist. Martinsville (VA) Alumni Resurges with First Annual Kappa Kookout Martinsville (VA) Alumni By: William Churchill Randolph

Brothers Michael Palmer, Matthew Woods, 2021 initiates, and Tracy Hairston, a Spring 2022 initiate, were the muscle for this event setting up tables, tents, and chairs and serving guests hamburgers, hot dogs, assorted chips, cookies and pies, and some sodas and tea. Kappa Leaguers, Jacob Simpson, Jairus Simpson, Syier Fountain-Depasse, and DeKare Hampton were essential helpers in assisting with set-up and serving the crowd.

Martinsville (VA) Alumni made its presence known by beginning its First Annual “Kappa Community Kookout,” held Saturday, the 16th of April 2022, at the Refuge Temple Ministries in Martinsville. The one-hundred-plus attended event included free food, fun, and fellowship for the community while providing information on health for those who attended. Local vendors were present who shared their goods and services, and the City’s police and fire officers show-cased their fire and rescue vehicles. Mayor Kathy Lawson and Vice-Mayor Jennifer Bowles were also in attendance. Mayor Bowles gave words of encouragement to the attendees. In the crowd, as well, were Kappa Brothers from the Roanoke and Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter(s) along with several members from the Divine Nine. Since Spring 2018, the heartbeat of this 65year-old chapter has resurged with Brothers (Spring 2018 initiates) Quincy Gravely, (Polemarch), and Desbee McDaniel, (Vice Polemarch), leading the way. This “Dynamic Duo” helped springboard two additional lines in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022, producing some youthful and gifted Brothers, including Brother Victor LeGrant, a Fall 2021 initiate, who organized this Kookout. Music was provided by Brother “DJ Doctor” Japhet LeGrant, a Fall 2021 initiate, (Brothers V.

Since this event was on Easter weekend, a bouncy house and an egg hunt were also provided for the numerous children in attendance. The Brothers' wives were in the crowd aiding and encouraging the great support of the community, facilitating group dance, and silhouetting the success of this initial event. Senior Kappas: George Reynolds, Andrew Wills, Barry Smith, and Hayward Jones watched and encouraged the Brothers to cook and direct parking – including “50 year” and “LIFE” members, Dwight Mack, and Wayne Moore. The Marvelous Martinsville Nupes along with CLINISPAN health, who underwrote this event, brought awareness to people of color about clinical trial education and patient recruitment. Statistically, the rate of inclusion in these trials is between 2 to 16 percent for 38.7 percent of the U.S. population of people of color. CLINISPAN’s focus and tagline is,

“Bringing Equity to Research.” The CLINISPAN Health Team – Jewann Adams, Rashaad Galloway, VeQuain Joyner, and Dezbee McDaniel were implemental in registering a number of guests for a potential future study. Flyers were given to Kookout participants enticing them to find a study and get paid! A raffle was also provided for registered participants and Officer Coretha Gravely won the top prize of $250. The entire event lasted about four hours and was concluded with remarks from Brother Gravely, stating, “[how] proud and happy he was in the direction the chapter is moving forward.” Benediction was given by Brother Anthony Pass.

Guide Right Kappa Leage Debate Team Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni By: Dennis Wilder

On Sunday, April 10, 2022, the AlexandriaFairfax (AF) Kappa League Debate team represented AF well at the National Kappa League Debate Challenge "Centennial Edition". The AF Kappa Leaguers successfully competed against the St. Louis (MO) Kappa Leaguers in the first round. While the AF Leaguers were victorious, it's also important to note that this noble fraternity continues to support young men aiming to achieve their dream. We must continue to support these young men through their own endeavors, continuing to "pay it forward" as our predecessors did. As times continue to change, Brothers must learn to adapt and continue to allow these brilliant young minds to make their own contributions. In the debate challenge, the topic of choice was "Has Social Media Improved Human Communications?". Social media has extended to our cell phones, computers, and gaming devices, it's virtually accessible anywhere. Social media allows people to speak with varying ethnic groups, social statuses, and idealists, allowing for "easy access". Think of today's latest cell phone or laptop, these technological devices are used constantly; chapter meetings, notifications, and people's personal lives.

While social media is helpful and allows for quick and easy connections, are people really improving their communication skills? Is the kid constantly communicating with others via "Instagram" truly learning how to interact with others? That same child is expanding their network with a multitude of connections via Instagram. How will this type of communication practice translate to the real world such as a job interview, Kappa interest meeting, or even a date when the time comes? In addition, Social Media increases the likelihood of things such as child predators, credit card fraud, and cyberbullying. There's a negative case to be regarding Social Media's impact on human communications. Has social media truly IMPROVED human communications? There are benefits as well as pitfalls with its insertion into our lives. According to the National Kappa League Debate Challenge and AF Kappa Leaguers, social media truly has not improved human communications. It's admirable knowing these young men are able to think for themselves and outside the social norm at such a young age. While the credit does go to them for their hard work, again Nupes, it means so much we continue to help aid them in their journey toward knowledge. Congratulations to Ayden Laster, Samson Boyd, Matthew Trimble, Eli Boyd, Caleb Rucker, and Zion Nubey for advancing. (CCG) to provide content on an interactive virtual platform, STEM City USA (https://stemcityusa.com/). “The recent COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light many of the issues already plaguing minority communities. Building upon our best practices and content, including the BEYA (Black Engineer of the Year Awards) and Women of Color STEM Conferences, STEM City USA is pioneering the bridge across the digital divide for millions of underserved through community and education. STEM City USA, our “City in the Sky,” will create a digital-in-themoment immersive experience, creating an interactive, virtual community that will provide personal and professional development tools and resources.” -Career Communications Group, Inc."

Content providers are committed to ensuring different experiences will be delivered—from networking opportunities to enjoying live musical performances. BAC’s Phase 1 rollout focuses on distributing Guide Right and Benchmark Kappa Youth Leadership Institute (Kappa League) content through one of the many communities of excellence within STEM City USA. On Saturday, March 17, 2022, the Guide Right Kappa League committee of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter held a session at the Annapolis Library on West Street. The discussion centered around the best college majors you can choose to prepare yourself for tomorrow’s workforce (e.g., type of work, pay, and the flexibility of transitioning into different fields of work). It was a very productive session for our young men. Kudos to all the Brothers that participated!

Arundel House of Hope Winter Relief Emergency Shelter Program

On Friday, March 11, 2022, the Guide Right/Kappa League Committee of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter, and our young men came together for the good cause of serving the homeless population in Annapolis. The Peerless Rens Club (a historic African American social club in Eastport) graciously opened their facility to allow our Guide Right/Kappa Leaguers to prepare 60plus meals to support the Arundel House of Hope Winter Relief Emergency Shelter Program. The shelter is generally provided through local churches and synagogues, but the House of Hope is currently operating an "Alternate Shelter '' at the Red Roof Inn in Annapolis due to the pandemic. A job well done by our young men and the Brothers; they are all to be congratulated. Thanks to Brothers Allan Griffin, Ron Williams (and Silhouette), John Williams, and Shawn Pindell for supporting the community effort.

The Guide Right Kappa League Committee of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter met with our young men on Saturday, February 12, 2022. In honor of Black History Month, we spotlighted Brother Reginald F. Thanks to Brothers Ron Williams, John Williams, Marc Watson, Shawn Pindell, and Allan Griffin respectively for their participation. Finally, the following achievements were acknowledged by a couple of our young men. Todd Colbert was accepted by a variety of universities, but he settled on BethuneCookman University for the fall. Judah Goslee recently qualified for the 2A State Indoor Championship in Pole Vault for Wicomico High School. Congratulations to Todd and Judah!

EP Kappa League Conference

On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, our young men participated in the Eastern Province (EP) Kappa League conference which focused on MVAC cancer treatment regimen, mental health and integrity. The conference also included several breakout sessions that focused on "It's okay... to not be okay", being able to identify causes of trauma, and learning how to deal with trauma. Our young men learned a lot and were able to process and understand the material very well. Kudos to Brother Charles Exum, 29th Eastern Province Polemarch, and his staff for putting on a very well presented and informative conference. Thanks to all who participated.

The Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter's Kappa League conducted a session concentrated on personal care and grooming. Brothers Anthony Edwards and Charles Twitty led the session. The young men were taught how to present themselves, how to tie a tie and what articles of clothing would be needed for their professional careers. The session also delved into the young men caring about their personal hygiene. Brothers mapped out for the young men, how to present themselves for college life and life beyond. The Kappa Leaguers enjoyed themselves and asked informative questions that will hopefully aid in their life journey.

Kappa Leaguers lead Hampton-Newport News Alumni Team to City Championship Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni By: Arthur Price On Monday, March 14, 2022, the Kappa Cardinals Junior Basketball Team (13&14-yearolds) faced its organization's perennial rival; the Y.H. Thomas Buccaneers, for the City of Hampton's Parks Recreation and Leisure Services Junior Division Championship. Led by Coach Tariq Lewis; former Kappa Cardinal and Kappa Leaguer (Class of 2008 ), the Cardinals won a hard-fought game to claim the divisional crown. This is but one of eight youth basketball teams that compete annually in the area parks and recreation program as an integral part of the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni chapter's robust Guide Right Program. On April 24, 2022, the Norfolk Kappa League participated in a local community service event at a local middle school in the Tidewater area. The purpose of the Adopt-A-School event was to help Hugo Owens Middle School (Chesapeake, VA) improve the landscaping of the school by laying mulch and planting flowers. In addition, the students would place purple flags and ribbons along the sidewalk and landscaping of the school in support of Military Appreciation Month. This was an amazing community service project to help the school create an attractive appearance for the school as well as celebrate military appreciation month.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2022, the Brothers of the Alexandria-Fairfax (AF) Virginia (VA) AlumniChapter had the distinct privilege to witness the promotion of Brother Major General Charles R. Hamilton, 2022 Eastern Province Recipient of the Donald G. Murphy Award. Brother Hamilton is a 1990 initiate of the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni chapter, and the 16th Polemarch of AF.

Brother Hamilton enlisted in the U.S. Army from his hometown Houston, Texas. Upon completing basic and individual training, he was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps after attending Officer Candidate School, where he was selected as the Distinguished Military Graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Virginia State University and Masters’s Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University and Military Studies from Marine Corps University. He is also a graduate of a Senior Service College Fellowship – Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellows Program.

Maj. Gen. Hamilton’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (2nd Awd), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3nd Awd), Meritorious Service Medal (9 OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal (2nd Awd), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Good Conduct Medal (2 Awards) and OEF Campaign Awards. He has also been awarded the Army, Joint Staff Badges, and Combat Action Badge. Brother Major General Charles R. Hamilton, we salute you and thank you for your service to our country and to our fraternity. It's truly important for the younger members to observe black men hold prominent roles in today's society. The fraternity continues to produce positive black men, such as Brother Major General Charles R. Hamilton, which also helps aid the next era of the fraternity. A constant enlightening to the younger members that a legitimate pathway to achieving their acquired success is possible. Helping remind the younger member of their ability to continuously succeed and achieve no matter the situation. Here’s to Brother Hamilton for his continued success and positive influence!

US Army ROTC Hall of Fame Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni By: Claude Vann, III

Hamptonians: RADM Sylvia Trent-Adams, C/O 1987 and COL Dwight "Rick" Thomas, C/O 1975 have been selected to enter the ROTC Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors. graduates of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps who have distinguished themselves in military or civilian pursuits. It provides a prestigious and tangible means of recognizing and honoring Army ROTC Alumni who have made lasting, significant contributions to the Nation, the Army and the history and traditions of the Army ROTC Program. I am anticipating they will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the AUSA Conference in October 2022, but more details to follow. The Hall of Fame was established in 2016 and MG Wallace Arnold, C/O 1960 and LTC Claude Vann, III, C/O 1977 were inducted in the inaugural year of the Hall of Fame, in 2018 LTG Robert Ferrell C/O 1983 entered the Hall of Fame, and in 2021 LTG Darrell Williams and MG Arther Holmes were inducted.

As a result of the Eastern Province’s 2022 Spring Intake Cluster, the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter’s membership now boasts 13 current chapter members who have sons who are now their fraternal brothers. On Friday, April 15, 2022, Brother Jimmie L. Williams, Jr. and his son-brother Jimmie L. Williams, III hosted this very special group at the Arbors; Brother Williams Jr’s place of residence. This evening of fellowship provided those in attendance with a unique opportunity to embrace the true meaning of fraternity that is inherent to membership in the noble clan of Kappa Alpha Psi. Annual Golf Tournament Baltimore (MD) Alumni By: Jason Bonardi

The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore hosted its second annual golf tournament on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at The Woodlands Golf Course in Woodlawn, MD. The charity event was supported by brothers from the Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter and their guests, and just like in 2021, the event was completely sold-out. The golf tournament had 23 foursomes participating, and more than 36 companies and individuals sponsored the event. The weather was perfect, and the Best Ball/Captain’s Choice format saw a team shoot a stunning 14-under par 58. As usual, Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter Silhouettes volunteered and assisted with registration, and welcoming participants.

Baltimore Alumni Chapter Polemarch, Craig Sims, said of the day, “we could not host this tournament without the support of Brothers and the public. Thanks to all who supported the day of fellowship and fundraising.” Proceeds from the day will go toward the Kappa Foundation of the Metropolitan Baltimore community and philanthropic efforts. The event was chaired by Brother Jason Bonardi.

On Sunday, March 13, 2022, the HamptonNewport News (VA) Alumni Chapter’s Spring 2022 MTA class was initiated into our Grand Fraternity. In doing so, this fifteen-member intake group became the largest class ever initiated in the chapter’s 77-year history. The new brothers were formally introduced to the entire chapter at a formal pinning ceremony held on April 2 in the auditorium of Cesar Tarrant Middle School in Hampton, VA.

Senior Kappa Grand Polemarch visits Eastern Province 50-Year Members By: Carl Brown

During the month of March, the Eastern Province held its 97th Province Council. During the council, new 50-Year members were inducted during a short ceremony hosted by Brother Wallace B. Riggins Jr. (ChairmanProvince Senior Kappa/50-Year Brother Committee). We also had the pleasure of the Grand Polemarch attending this event. As we recognized our newest 50-Year members, the Grand Polemarch took a few minutes to visit with them and provide laudatory comments as well as express how important they are as we continue to shape the organization. His attendance at the event inspired, not only the new members but, all Kappas in attendance. Upon conclusion of the event, the Grand Polemarch stuck around to mingle with the Senior Kappas.

On 21 February 2022, Senior Brothers from the Aberdeen Alumni Chapter visited one of their Senior brothers, Brother Stan Mumford.

The Polemarch, Brother Gary Lee presented Brother Mumford with a fruit basket, and Chaplain, Brother Andre Godsey delivered prayer. Brother Mumford is the oldest brother in Aberdeen’s chapter and one of the Chapters founding brothers with over 60 years in the bond.

Brothers Ernest Anderson, Keith Yancey, Teddy Williams, and Greg Browne of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter and Marcus Yancey of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter hooked up in Baltimore, MD aka Charm City to enjoy some CIAA hoops. These brothers have been enjoying the CIAA Basketball Tournament for years and once again had a "BALL" at the 2022 Tournament. Congratulations to Fayetteville State University for winning the tournament.

During the month of March, Frederick (MD) Alumni Chapter focused on its Senior Widows. Brothers were encouraged to call or visit the Senior Widows and provide aide where there maybe needed, knowing that sometimes just a friendly voice will lift the spirit.

Eastern Province Council 2022 Annapolis (MD) Alumni By: Ronald Stokes On the weekend of March 18, 2022, the brothers of the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter convened in Richmond, VA at the Marriott Hotel. It was the first time our Eastern Province (EP) Council was held in person since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It was truly good getting together with the Brothers and it was a very successful and informative EP Council. Our chapter brother, Ernest Anderson, Province Polemarch's Chief of Staff was

awarded the Pillar Of The Province Award. Kudos to Brother Charles Exum, 29th Eastern Province Polemarch, and his staff for a very successful Province Council. We are looking forward to next year’s Eastern Province Council.

Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni By: Jerome Parker On Saturday, February 19, 2022, the members of Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., My Brothers Keeper (Health & Wellness Subcommittee) organized the Spring 2022 inaugural "Nupe Get Fit Gym Call" at LA Fitness Watkins Park in Upper Marlboro, MD. It was the first of future Health & Wellness activities to be organized beyond first Saturdays National Harbor Chapter Run/Walks. This is in an effort to get Nupes moving, active and engaged with their health. A highlight of this activity was reclaiming a brother (Kenny Stevens FL99, Alpha Iota) who expressed an interest to visit the chapter. The My Brother Keeper committee, comprising 15 members, focus on Life events, bonding activities and health & wellness initiatives with goals of small group participation. Small group participation does not exceed 10% of the chapter (7- 12 brothers or more). The brothers enjoy this as it epitomizes the following: "Less of another, more of a Brother."

Chapter Invisible William “Bill” Norvell Pinckney (1937-2022) Submitted by: Eastern Province Brother Pinckney entered the chapter invisible on May 28, 2022. In 1986, he joined the Frederick (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and that chapter held a special place in his heart. He served on the chapter’s board. After relocating to Williamsburg, VA on military orders, Brother Pinckney joined the Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter. He was active on all levels – local chapter, province and grand chapter. He was the 8th life member of the Eastern Province, a life member of Grand Chapter, a member of the Million Dollar Club, and the Inaugural Senior Kappa Affairs Endowment Fund contributor. He started the role of “Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouette Liaison” in the Eastern Province and it has now extended to all 12 provinces. He served as assistant to one of the past Eastern Province Polemarchs and served as the Region V representative to the Province Board of Directors. Most recently, he was serving as the Region V Senior Kappa Committee Liaison. Brother Pinckney continued to be a stalwart Kappa man! He traveled near and far if it was related to Kappa and only missed one Grand Chapter Conclave in Minneapolis. Kappa Alpha Psi truly held a special place in his heart and we will truly be missed.
