The South County Bike Path It feels pretty far from the sea when you’re at Kingston Station (near the University of Rhode Island) and looking at the trailhead of the South County Bike Path. But it’s actually less than 8 miles to Narragansett Bay, following the course of the old Narragansett Pier Railroad. After skirting some farmers’ fields, the bike path edges alongside the Great Swamp Management Area before cutting through the woods and mill villages of South Kingstown and ending near the beach.

An outing on the South County Bike Path features: • A pair of small bridges looking out over wetlands populated by waterfowl, turtles and freshwater fish. • Long stretches through quiet woodlands. • Dismounting to explore the trails South Kingstown’s Tri-Pond Park. • Taking the challenging switchback where the path crosses Kingstown Road, site of a former railroad bridge (Kingston Pizza, with its streamside picnic tables, is a
popular lunch spot). • Spotting the chickens and goats wandering through quiet Riverside Cemetery. • Pausing to admire the Saugatucket River running behind Main Street in Wakefield. • Appreciating the nature in the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge. The path ends rather unceremoniously at South Kingstown High School, but press on for a few Narragansett streets and you’ll be at the beach and Pier in minutes.

Up until 1854, east Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode island, one for each county. the seat of the legislature rotated among them. it also claims to be the birthplace of the Us navy, as established by a 1775 General assembly resolution. several other towns also stake this claim, but east Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

Charlestown-richmond-Hopkinton a rural hideaway with big time events Colloquially known as Chariho, these three thinly populated towns offer a taste of both south County’s lively tourism industry of today and its rural past. Charlestown is the only one of the three on the water, and thus home to Chariho’s only beaches, with both a town and a state beach occupying the narrow strip of land that encircles the coastal lagoon ninigret Pond. Napatree Point is a half-mile long public beach that separates Little narragansett Bay from the Block island sound. it’s a popular spot for beach-goers, hikers and bird watchers. sandy Point, a 35-acre island, was once attached to napatree Point, but was separated from the mainland by the Hurricane of 1938. today, it’s a nature preserve with public access and a beach. the watch Hill lighthouse is about a 15-minute walk from town at the east approach of Fishers island sound. the lighthouse dates back to 1856, though the site has been in operation since 1808. the lighthouse itself is closed to the public, but the grounds and a museum are open after July 1.

Block Island an island escape in just under an hour Located about 13 miles (or a short ferry ride) from Point Judith in narragansett, Block island is a getaway in south County’s backyard. this secluded island spends most months as a sleepy rural hideaway, but in the summer it morphs into a booming resort town. that lively tourism industry is but one facet of an island that also boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoiled green spaces found anywhere in the country.

Arrive the island awaits – but first you’ve got to get there. You’ve got two options. BY sea: the Block island Ferry (401783-7996, blockislandferry.com) departs from Point Judith (narragansett) and newport, with both a high speed ferry (both locations) and a traditional, slower option (Point Judith only). BY air: New england airlines (800243-2460, block-island.com/nea) can get you from Westerly airport to the island in 12 short minutes, with flights running every hour on the half-hour in peak months.

Explore Block island is easy to navigate without a car, whether on foot or otherwise. three of the most popular options are cab, bicycle and moped. taxi: mcgovern’s Cab (401- 862-6087, mcgovernstaxi.com) and mig’s rig taxi (401-4800493, migsrigtaxi.com) operate into the later hours. try Block island taxi tours (401-4662562) for a more guided tour. Highlights there include frozen mudslides on the porch at mcgovern’s Yellow Kittens (Corn neck Rd. 401-466-5855, mcgovernsyellowkittens.com) and Captain Nick’s rock n roll Bar (34 ocean ave. 401-466-5670), which hosts the annual Block island music Festival (June 10-15, blockislandmusic.com). on the other side of the island, the scene in new Harbor is clustered around three marinas (Payne’s Dock, the Boat Basin and Champlin’s marina) that are packed with bars and restaurants. the Narragansett inn (ocean ave. 401-466-2626, narragansettinn.net), is also worth a visit for the great views from the porch at sunset. if you’re more interested in the great outdoors, mohegan Bluffs are magnificent clay cliffs providing spectacular views and a steep climb down to the beach (don’t worry – there are stairs). the greenway is a 12-mile hiking trail that covers much of the southern half of the island, while the Clayhead trail explores the northern end and is a great spot for bird watching. to learn more about Block island’s extensive green spaces – it’s been named “one of the 12 last great places in the Western Hemisphere” by nature Conservancy – visit the Block island Consverancy (234 Weldon’s Way. 401-466-3111, biconservancy.org)

Jamestown occupies Conanicut island, the second largest island in narragansett Bay. of course, this is Rhode island, so don’t let “second biggest” mislead you: Conanicut island is only nine miles long by one mile wide. Beavertail state Park is Jamestown’s best-known attraction, and home to the Beavertail Lighthouse, an active beacon. its 153 acres are great for hiking, picnicking and fishing, with great views all around. newport america’s original resort town Though it’s not part of south County, newport is only about 20 minutes away on aquidneck island, and can easily fill up a whole day (or night). the City by the sea became famous during the Gilded age as the summer playground of wealthy families like the astors, the Vanderbilts and the Dukes. though the age of the iconic newport mansions (or, as they were known back then, “summer cottages”) has come and gone, it remains a lively summer boomtown. it boasts a great dining scene, several of the summer’s biggest festivals and, of course, those cottages, most of which are open for tours.

What’s In a Name?
In your travels through southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter plenty of unofficial names for places. Even the name “South County” is itself a colloquial creation, encompassing most of Washington County, and one town each from Kent and Newport Counties. You’ll also hear lots of references to “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. Locals may direct you to strange places, like Galilee, Wyoming and Usquepaugh, that will confuse and confound your GPS. That is because many of the towns in South County are actually collections of small villages that were later incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.
