Charlestown-richmond-Hopkinton a rural hideaway with big-time events Colloquially known as Chariho, these three thinly populated towns offer a taste of both south County’s lively tourism industry of today and its rural past. Charlestown is the only one of the three on the water, and thus home to Chariho’s only beaches, with both a town and a state beach occupying the narrow strip of land that encircles the coastal lagoon ninigret Pond. A Place in History
Up until 1854, east Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode island, one for each county. the seat of the legislature rotated among them. it also claims to be the birthplace of the Us navy, as established by a 1775 General assembly resolution. several other towns also stake this claim, but east Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

Though it’s not part
of south County, newport is only about 20 minutes away on aquidneck island, and can easily fill up a whole day (or night). the City by the sea became famous during the Gilded age as the summer playground of wealthy families like the astors, the Vanderbilts and the Dukes. though the age of the iconic newport mansions (or, as they were known back then, “summer cottages”) has come and gone, it remains a lively summer boomtown. it boasts a great dining scene, several of the summer’s biggest festivals and, of course, those cottages, most of which are open for tours.

Here are some suggestions for making the most of the quick jaunt across the bridge and having a jam-packed day in newport. MOrNING Hit the beach: take a dip at easton’s Beach (commonly known as 1st Beach) on Memorial Boulevard, followed by a quick drink at the adjacent atlantic Beach Club (55 Purgatory Rd., Middletown. 401-847-2750, atlanticbeachclub.com). Looking for something more family friendly? Gooseberry Beach on ocean avenue is more secluded in a cove.

Napatree point is a half-mile long public beach that separates Little narragansett Bay from the Block island sound. it’s a popular spot for beach-goers, hikers and bird watchers. sandy point, a 35-acre island, was once attached to napatree Point, but was separated from the mainland by the Hurricane of 1938. today, it’s a nature preserve with public access and a beach. The Watch Hill Lighthouse is about a 15-minute walk from town at the east approach of Fishers island sound. the lighthouse dates back to 1856, though the site has been in operation since 1808. the lighthouse itself is closed to the public, but the grounds and a museum are open after July 1.

Watch Hill’s commercial district is an easily strollable area centered on Bay street, and is on the national Register of Historic Places. there are numerous clothing boutiques for kids and adults, home décor and antiques stores and gift shops. The Flying Horse Carousel is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country. it’s also the only remaining one of its kind, with the horses suspended from a center frame instead of attached to the floor. At the end of Bay St. st. Clair annex is Watch Hill’s iconic ice cream parlor and clam shack. to attempt to capture all the reasons to visit Providence in a single page; suffice to say the city is worthy of a full vacation in its own right. if you’ve only got a day, however, there are some must-see highlights. since the Creative Capital is a college town, we’ve given you two very simple levels of study.

if you only ever visit the city once, make sure it’s on a WaterFire night. Providence’s most famous tourist attraction is both an event and an art installation centered around bonfires that light up the rivers passing through Downtown. tens of thousands of residents and visitors converge in the city center for art, food, music, dancing and more. Lightings happen throughout the season, so check waterfire.org for dates. Federal Hill was once Providence’s famed Little italy, but over the past decade or so it has become a much more multicultural dining destination. the main drag of atwells avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints, but boast Mexican, Lebanese, Japanese and Caribbean food, too. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, College Hill, home to Brown University and the Rhode island school of Design, is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. Downtown Providence is home to many of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants, along with nightlife, theater, art galleries and unique shopping. one of the most unique shopping destinations anywhere is The arcade (65 Weybosset st. arcadeprovidence.com), america’s oldest indoor shopping mall, which recently underwent an extensive renovation. if you’re in town on thursday, head just up the street at dusk for Movies On the Block, free outdoor screenings of classics and cult favorites. For dining and nightlife that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over the West side, which is clustered around the two main thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster street. this area is home to the city’s vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings and hip cocktail bars.

What’s In a Name?
In your travels through southern Rhode Island, you’re likely to encounter plenty of unofficial names for places. Even the name “South County” is itself a colloquial creation, encompassing most of Washington County, and one town each from Kent and Newport Counties. You’ll also hear lots of references to “towns” that don’t seem to exist in any official sense. Locals may direct you to strange places, like Galilee, Wyoming and Usquepaugh, that will confuse and confound your GPS. That is because many of the towns in South County are actually collections of small villages that were later incorporated into larger municipalities. Here is a handy guide to help you find your way.
