Letters Shopping Well for Less Call me crazy – you wouldn’t be the first – but I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with extreme couponing. You won’t find me at a register these days without a stack of paper coupons, an app pulled up on my phone, and a discount member card in hand. Fifteen acres of screams take over Wakefield’s Highland Farm. Do you dare to be a passenger on Delamorte’s Haunted Hayride, or walk (maybe you should run) through the Forest of Fear? Hundreds of carved, illuminated pumpkins will line the park trails from 5-8:30pm. The Charlestown Chamber is putting out a call to Chariho residents, asking for donations of carved pumpkins for the event, to be dropped off starting on October 23. Prizes will be given to the best pumpkins. Providence from October 20-26. The festival, now in its 15th season, features scary movies from around the world. Last year’s festival included 56 films from 19 countries. There’s also an opening night spooktacular and a walking tour of the old haunts of master of horror H.P. Lovecraft. Viewer beware: because of the film content, children under 14 are admitted only with an adult. www. film-festival.org Thousands of intricately carved jack o’lanterns will light the Roger Williams Park Zoo at the annual Jack O’Lantern Spectactular. From October 2-November 2, once the sun goes down, the pumpkins come out to play. This year’s theme is Pumpkins A-Z, with highlights from history and pop culture; annual favorites like the Laughing Tree and the Halloween scenes (featuring pumpkins that weigh in at over 1,000 pounds) will be back for another show. Last year set an all-time attendance high of 135,000 people for the season. Lines can be long on the weekends, but are practically nonexistent on weeknights or if rain is in the forecast. What’s better than spying exotic animals? When those animals give you candy. On October 25 and 26, the Roger Williams Park Zoo presents Spooky Zoo. This daytime event is included in regular admission, and is more fun than a barrel
of monkeys: think trick or treating inside the Zoo, music and entertainment, a magician, games, animal encounters and pumpkin treats. Our legends date back 400 years, and are full of spooky tales of real hauntings. The Providence Ghost Tour (484-8687, www.providenceghosttour.com) takes brave souls on lantern-lit walks through the city’s Mile of History on Benefit Street, once frequented by masters of horror Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. Tours happen nightly in September and October, but beware: the Ghost Tour warns guests that it’s not responsible for “any haunting, soul possession or poltergeist activity experienced before, during or after the tour.” Ghost Tours of Newport (841-8600, www. ghostsofnewport.com) takes guests on an Old Town Ghost Walk to track down the haunted past of the City by the Sea, filled with pirates and Revolutionary War legends. On Fridays in October, Slater Mill hosts Mills & Mysteries: A Ghostly Experience (725-8638, www.slatermill.org). The Wakefield Art Festival Returns Everybody wants to support all things local. Whether it’s shopping at the Mom and Pop store down the street, eating locally grown food or purchasing crafts from neighborhood artisans, buying local is obviously beneficial to the community. With this mindset Festival Fete has organized the Wakefield Art Festival on October 4, which will feature over 100 contemporary craft artisans. There will be local food, clothes, arts, crafts (including free crafts for children) and moreavailable for purchase. Rhode Island band Lizzie James and the Greystone Rail will be performing, while “strolling entertainment” will be provided by visual performance group Big Nazo
(read: puppets!). Ten booth spaces have been donated to give young artists (grades 1-12) a chance to sell their work. A painting or sculpture of the event will be created onsite and donated to a local institution, such as a library. Non-profit organizations such as RiverzEdge Arts and the Jamestown Arts Center are involved with the festival too. Festival Fete’s goal is to provide a platform where local artists can display their work. The Wakefield Art Festival is a free-to-the-public event that promotes this opportunity. A Barking Good Cause
4th annual Bark on the Beach returns October 4
Dog is man’s best friend, and they bring their owners much joy. However, there are the unfortunate among our canine companions; namely, the surrendered, abandoned and abused. The Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island (ARLSRI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the well being of these poor pets, and it’s their mission to unite them with loving families throughout southern New England. They offer several services to facilitate their goal, including pet-surrender, adoption and

even humane education classes. They’re also one of the few “no kill” shelters in New England. That being said, ARLSRI is holding its 4th annual Bark on the Beach charity dog walk on October 4. Hundreds of volunteers donate thousands of hours of their free time every year. Each year the walk has gathered hundreds of participants and features music, food, games, raffles and more. As a further incentive, the sponsor that donates the most money will win
a Narragansett Weekend Getaway. Also, those who register before day of event are eligible for a night on the town in Wakefield. ARLSRI raises its funds solely through donations, grants, and fundraising sponsorships. So bring your dog and support a great cause. Your best friend will (continue to) love you for it. to the world 14 years ago, geocaching has been a sport that has spread like wildfire. There are 2.5 million geocaches hidden around the world, and more than 6 million geocachers looking for them. Locally, there are hundreds to track down on public and land trust properties. In Rhode Island and Connecticut you can choose from more than 2,700. It’s sort of like a treasure hunt, but the only riches you will amass are the memories of great vistas, fresh air and the exercise that comes from hiking outdoors. Oh, and you might pick up a few trinkets from the cache, but just make sure to replace them with something of equal or greater value. If you like to hike, you might have stumbled upon a cache by accident, or passed dozens of them without knowing of their existence. According to www.geocaching.com, “Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container)
hidden at that location.” You can go the website and search by state or zip code, get the GPS coordinates and head out to search. Once the geocacher finds one, he or she signs the log at the cache, visits the website and logs it in as having been found. Geocaching is not just for hikers. There are even groups that hide caches along rivers and ponds, allowing people in boats to take part. On the Pawcatuck River, for example, there is a geocache tied to a tree growing on a large rock in the middle of the river. More hints could be given about its location, but then one would be a “spoiler,” or someone who logs in to say they found the cache and then offers too many clues, making it easier to find. It is an activity that is also developing its own lexicon. For example, nongeocachers are called “muggles.” Those who steal or vandalize a cache are called “mugglers.” And for veteran geocachers, “to get your comma” means that you have found 1,000 caches. If you delve deep enough into it, the activity has a veritable alphabet soup of

acronyms that can be used when either signing tiny log books found in caches that prove you found it, or in descriptions of caches that you look up to find the coordinates before hitting the trail. There is TNLN, which means “took nothing, left nothing.” ATCF means “as the crow flies,” or the sad log-in, DNF or “did not find.” But DNF also serves a purpose. If the owner of the cache sees enough DNF notations, it is time to go to the site and see if a muggler took off with the cache.
and her partner Holly Wiesendanger, of Warwick, have been chasing geocaches for the past three years, starting when Jenny bought a smart phone with a GPS app. She said that she had heard about the sport in 2000, but back then you had to have an expensive GPS device. The phone app “took away the added expense,” says Holly. “It is an activity that brings you to places you never knew existed,” explains Jenny. “We went on vacation to Niagara Falls and were able to find some geocaches along the way.” So far the duo has found 224 caches, some of which are rather memorable. They try to avoid the spring months when tick activity seems to be at its highest, but later in the summer and into the fall they try to head out each weekend. They will continue into the winter months, depending on how cold it gets and whether snow makes the search nearly impossible. Holly says that one of the more unusual caches is actually a toilet that someone carried into the woods in New York. The commode is adorned with antlers and has painted eyes and a nose. The cache was an ammo can attached to the tank that was painted gold.
Some of the caches are hard to find. They come in different sizes, all the way from large plastic boxes to micro caches that require tweezers to extract the log book. Micro caches, a bit smaller than a thimble, are usually a metal cylinder with a screw cap. All of them are sealed to keep out water, and log books are usually kept in a plastic bag in the bigger caches. Holly says that sometimes they go back to the site where a cache is hidden more than ten times and it could take months to find, depending on how crafty the geocacher is at camouflage. When it is finally found they realize they might have walked past it numerous times. There is a cache in Big River Management Area in West Greenwich that is titled “A Good Can is Hard to Find.” Each cache has a name that is somewhat of a clue. Some examples include “Seas the Day,” “Choose Wisely,” “Surrounded by Briars” or “Forest Giant.” The two have searched for caches in a variety of places such as along bike paths, in the sand and rocks at the beach and in historic cemeteries like the one behind Best Buy in Warwick. Near their home, a micro-cache is hidden behind the Mickey Stevens Sports Complex. It took them a few tries to find it. One day the pair was geocaching and met “Patsfan2071” on a trail. He has hidden a few caches in the area. “He is sneaky and clever,” says Holly about his ability to hide caches. Recently the pair took off to Oakland Beach to try and find a cache called “Right by the Beach.” They had been to the area numerous times and armed with the clues of previous geocachers, and on this day finally found it. They turned over rocks and stuck their hands in crevices of the seawall for about 20 minutes before Holly straightened up and said she thought she had found it. She bent down and pulled out the cache. This cache was

Although there were trinkets in the box, she didn’t take any or leave any behind before she carefully placed it back in its hiding place. At Oakland Beach, the two stood out searching among the brush and rocks. When passersby ask what they are doing Holly says she usually tells them, but the rule is not to explain too much because people could find the cache and destroy it. But on this day several people made inquiries. To one Jenny told them about her search and said, “It’s fun but a little frustrating when you can’t find it.” Their next stop was “Bayside Field I.” The cache is hidden along a bike path near John Delgiudice Memorial Field. It was not their first search for this particular cache. After about 15 minutes of casting about in the brush on both sides of the bike path Holly found it. She opened it and added her name to the log. “I’m impressed,” Jenny said to Holly. “I didn’t think we would find it,” replied Holly.
says Holly. “And I do enjoy the hiking and the challenge.” One of those clever caches was a fake bolt that had been hollowed out and stuck in a fence. Some others have been found inside hollowed out fence posts, or by pulling the end cap off a railing. Some are hidden in plain sight like the “Gates of L” cache that was a magnetic letter of a sign. The lucky ones who found it pulled it down and
signed the back. That particular cache is no longer active. Jenny and Holly have released a “travel bug” which is now in Massachusetts. A travel bug is a trackable tag that you attach to an item which becomes a hitchhiker that is carried from cache to cache. Its progress can be then be tracked online. When they were geocaching around Niagara Falls they found a travel bug that the owner hoped to get to Germany. They looked and left it in a cache near Green State Airport. “Sometimes people waiting for a flight will search for a few caches if they have time,” says Jenny. And perhaps one of those travelers is heading to Germany. Its progress, like all travel bugs, can be monitored online. “I love seeing the different spots and it is neat that they are everywhere,” says Jenny. For Holly, who grew up in Warwick, finding all the coastal access point has been an eye opener. “I don’t know how I grew up here and didn’t know about them,” she says.
and Sally Hanson of Westerly have given classes in geocaching at a variety of places in southern Rhode Island like Kettle Pond Visitor Center in Charlestown. Sally has permission to set up caches on Westerly Land Trust properties, such as the Grills Preserve, Riverwood and the Dr. John Champlin Glacier Park.
But there are others setting up caches in Westerly, including some in Wilcox Park. Whoever sets up the cache is responsible for maintaining it, says Sally. That work includes making sure it is not muggled, the log book is kept dry and its hiding place is not altered. Sally says the fun part of each cache is coming up with a name and a blurb about it. Some of her caches are called “Big Hill,” “The Pines,” “1775” and “Glacier Park I.” Jim and Sally use GPS devices to search. These devices can cost anywhere from $100 to $500. GPS units can also come preloaded with maps for the entire United States. For the beginner, a class in how to use a GPS is a good idea, says Jim. One tip that Jim and Sally urge searchers to adopt is setting a waypoint on the units before leaving the parking lot. That way after a day of wandering in the woods, travel back to your vehicle is easier. (Waypoints are sets of coordinates that identify a point in physical space.) Geocachers normally carry a backpack or waist pack with a few assorted tools. Jim and Sally have a list for safety and searching that includes, a flashlight and extra batteries, gloves for reaching into sketchy places, maps, compass (in case your GPS fails), a knife or multi-function tool, hat, sunscreen, first aid kit, cell phone, spray to ward off ticks and water. And they both say know when to call it a day. The geocaches are not going anywhere… unless there’s a muggler around!

I had a beautiful Chanel summer skirt that sold for $350 and it retails for over $1000. I also sold a St. John jacket that retails around $1000 and you get one here for $350. Right now there a Louis Vuitton bag here that retails for around $1500 but in my store it’s $500 — and it’s a classic. We also have, for example, Dior sunglasses for $99 in the case, in the box. That’s the problem with Ebay, you can’t see or touch the pieces, or verify authenticity.

Burst winter pipes inspired the Schwabs to build the kitchen of their dreams
The Next Chapter Reinventing the Matunuck Schoolhouse as a home

Four years ago, we introduced you to Richard and Kristin Schwab, two academics at the University of Connecticut who serendipitously made the former Matunuck Schoolhouse their home. The couple had long term plans to reinvent parts of the 1904 schoolhouse both inside and out. In the winter of 2012, those plans took an unexpected turn when the Schwabs came home only to find burst pipes, a flooded basement, unsalvageable ceilings and walls and a severely damaged kitchen. “It was a nightmare,” Richard says bluntly. “It was awful at first but, then… we might as well embrace it,” reflects Kristin, conceding that while there were home improvement plans on the horizon, the couple had no intentions of doing them so quickly. The couple’s insurer had a disaster team, Westerly-based ServiceMaster by Mason, in place right away. The team spent nine hours bailing out water and tearing out water-soaked
ceilings and walls. When the couple had a blank – but finally dry – slate, they took inventory of everything that needed to be replaced, and things they wanted to replace. “We decided to bite the bullet and make the kitchen of our dreams,” says Richard. “It was a 1980s kitchen, but they had done it nicely,” explains Kristin. “That’s why we were reluctant to do it [initially].” The couple turned to Matt Davitt of Davitt Design Build of West Kingston, a longtime advocate of preservation and restoration. “Davitt was in there for almost six months to do work from the repair on top of design we wanted to do,” explains Richard. Along the way, the couple continued to merge modern conveniences with architectural consideration, as the more-than-acentury-old building is not only a local landmark but a community treasure. “A lot of the folks that went to school there were working on the house,” says
Richard with a laugh. In the painstaking restoration process, it was clear the Schwabs weren’t the only ones emotionally invested in the project. One of the home’s features the family had long hoped to address was the windows. “It always kind of bothered me, because the ones from the old house had so much character,” explains Kristin. “We worked with Arnold Lumber and they found windows that matched pretty much identically except they are modern and energy efficient,” says Richard. “We had photos of the original windows from the exterior of the house so we used the same dimensions,” adds Kristin. The couple also replaced all the bi-fold doors in the home with period-inspired five-panel Shaker style doors. “[They] are more in keeping with the craftsman style,” says Kristin. With the finish work, all the damaged trim was removed and replaced with custom cut
trim that seamlessly matches the original wood detail. In So Rhode Island’s 2010 feature of the home, we revealed the couple had planned to make the basement, which a century ago served as the school’s cafeteria and indoor playground, and included both girls and boys lavatories, into a “man cave” and casual family room space where their two collegeage children could equally relax and unwind. Another blessing in disguise as a result of the pipe disaster was the opportunity to finally finish the basement, which has evolved into a multi-purpose entertainment space. “It’s really a young adult cave now because my son is a senior in college and my daughter is just starting grad school,” says Richard. “It’s where they and all their friends hang out and play ping pong, foosball, darts and the TVs are down there.” But the space that underwent the most dramatic change was the kitchen. “We tried to keep things as authentic as possible. It more honors the history of the home – it has a historic feel with contemporary flair,” says Richard. “We put in a Wolf stove and apron sink. We found this really unique tile that has small cracks in it, so it looks old, but it’s new, in teal. It looks really great against the cabinets.” The style, created by Kitchens Direct of New England in Wakefield, reflects a 1920s mission style and opens up to the living space. The smart floor plan allows for these two enthusiastic cooks to whip up dishes and entertain guests simultaneously. The couple put the space to the test

when they hosted family, friends and the folks who helped put the schoolhouse back together again for a holiday party during a roaring snowstorm. The weather didn’t stop a thing and the celebration continued into the night. The surrounding property has seen improvements, too. Kristin, an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, finally had the opportunity to reinvent an old toolshed out back. She worked alongside local landscaper Mark Masson. “We built it as an outdoor screen house and repositioned it overlooking the property… right next to the patio where we have the fire pit
and barbeque. There’s outdoor seating and the gardens… we have a lot of color. My husband keeps saying ‘more color, more color!’ We have a plant palette: hydrangea, coneflowers and ornamental roses. We originally just started to put a hedge in… and clean out over grown trees but the more I got into it, I was just licking my lips saying ‘We need to get into this!’” explains Kristin. “I kept saying, ‘Just a few more things.’” While the Schwabs have even more plans for the old schoolhouse, right now they’re basking in how far it’s come. “It’s one of those things where
it was three-quarters of a year and a real challenge… I can’t say enough about the Davitt team and the Service Master team… everyone worked together to help us out,” says Richard. “The take away is that we look forward to the next adventure with this,” adds Kristin, adding that ideally the next chapter is on their terms, not a disaster’s. “We’ve fallen in love with the place; it’s even more special.”

Cathy Gorham bought Basketcase in November 2013, after the previous owners closed the month before. She comes to Wakefield with a background in merchandising for a major corporation, and is happy to be working in a town with such a “shop local” philosophy.

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first. Why Basketcase? Because if you called me that, we’d have a problem. When the store opened up under the previous owners, they did gift baskets. It was appropriate at the time. It had been around for almost 12 years – some people aren’t aware they closed, or that we reopened. I wouldn’t change the name at this point. Why take over such a venerable location? I had been thinking about buying my own business for a year, and had a deal fall though in Connecticut. I was checking out Wakefield, and heard a couple of people in different places complaining that the store was closing. It’s not just because people love the store – I love the store, and the location. Wakefield is a great little town, and it’s year-round, which is nice. Basketcase has evolved from a gift store into a cool collection of house wares, clothing and handmade jewelry and art. What inspired your collection?
When I first bought the store, I didn’t want to change much. But it was clear to me pretty quickly that housewares are just a gift item, that sells a lot during Christmas and for weddings. In between, they’re hostess gifts. I knew I had to diversify. As a coincidence, Janeeska, the clothing store next door, closed after Christmas, so I decided to bring clothing in. What kind of clothing do you carry? I love that we have comfortable clothing that’s also flattering. I’ve got casual ware, and work sportswear. It’s all very stylish, but it’s also comfortable. They’re easy to take care of, and they make everybody look great. We go from size 2 to 1x. I don’t want the store to be exclusive to a certain figure or lifestyle – I want everyone to come in and find something that they like. South County really gets shopping local. Tell me about the local artists you carry at Basketcase. I carry pottery by Susan Toppin, photography on canvas by Bob Rush, photography on aluminum by Nancy Reed Carr – they’re all Rhode Islanders. I’ve got Rhode Island jewelry, driftwood art, Kiel James Patrick bracelets. Lots of New England stuff. Let’s talk silver service. It’s beautiful, but do you ever really use it at home? Mariposa is definitely useful. It’s not
something you put away and don’t use. It’s 100% recycled aluminum, not silver, so you don’t have to polish it. You wash and dry and it looks great. It’s very traditional, but it’s also highly functional. What’s trending this fall as far as clothing and accessories? I’m seeing a lot of deep colors. The tunic seems to be waning – people are choosing shorter shirts and high waisted pants – but comfort is key. Women are looking for nice looking pants that fit well. I think that’s part of the higher waist. Low hip pants definitely are for a certain figure.

to make. I am not the kind of girl who takes care of herself. I will wait until my roots are over two inches long before I get my color re-done. I have had a gift certificate for a massage sitting in my kitchen junk drawer for about two years. Come to think of it, I have never in my life, had a professional massage. I know... I am a shameful example of a woman. Don’t get me wrong; I definitely could use some pampering. I am athletic and play sports, and on top of that, I sit in front of a computer all day. So it goes without saying, my traps are hard as rocks, and I already look like I could use the assistance of a walker with how hunched my back is. With all that, I already knew when I signed up for an hour of massage and Reiki at Sundance Therapies in East Greenwich I was in for a treat. Sara Doherty, owner and seasoned massage therapist, greeted me in the calm Tuscany-inspired lobby of the studio. The subtle sounds of the gentle water fountain helped set the mood for the hour of bliss I had waiting for me. My session was an intoxicating combination of Swedish massage and Reiki treatment that lasted an entire hour. Granted, I’m the kind of person that will lay awake at night worrying about anything and everything, with my mind going one thousand miles an hour – so getting into the relaxation zone was a bit of a test. But after the first pressure points on my neck were activated, I was in heaven. Sara worked the Reiki and Swedish massage in tandem during our session. The massage portion was a gentle kind of therapy that is great for achieving relaxation. Reiki, on the other hand, is a practice many have heard of, but few have had a chance to experience. In essence, Reiki is the process of moving and restoring life force energy. As a seasoned Reiki practitioner, Sara was skilled at combining the two modalities for maximum zoning-out effect. She eased my mind and body by paying diligent
attention to my problem areas, (neck and shoulders) while incorporating relaxing Reiki within the session to all areas of my body. As Sara explained to me, our human instinct to nurture and reach out and comfort others with touch is really is a large part of what Reiki taps into. The channeling of life force from one person to another is a way to promote self-healing through relaxation and stress reduction. Sara has always felt, from a young age, that she wanted to help heal and offer compassion to others and she got to do that through Reiki. through the back wall. Although the kitchen sustained most of the damage, the building was left structurally intact. The restaurant’s owners vowed to not only rebuild but also use that opportunity to improve on the space. In the summer of 2013, the Coast Guard House reopened its rooftop deck
while it continued to renovate the first floor dining room. On July 17 of this year, the dining room finally reopened for dinner service, and I was looking forward to my visit. On a recent Sunday night, I brought my parents and a friend to check out the new space, and we were blown away! The pictures online don’t do it justice. The restaurant always had a nice view of Narragansett Bay, but now it’s spectacular. A section of the restaurant which had previously been enclosed with a cinderblock wall has been opened up to expose a wall of windows. The kitchen and downstairs bar area switched places, providing the kitchen more protection from future storms and offering bar patrons more room and a breathtaking view. The décor is classy, yet casual with lots of dark wood and transparent images of Narragansett’s past. I was thrilled to have a prime window table with an expansive view of Narragansett Bay. Even on the foggy night I was there, we could see all the way to Beavertail Lighthouse. We started the night with a round of cocktails, and I couldn’t resist ordering from the menu which boasted cocktails made with New England Spirits. My Bee Barb was made with Nantucket’s Gale Force Gin (apropos for this location), lemon,
honey simple syrup and Burlesque Bitters. It was so tasty, I ordered another. My father went with his standard Ketel One Martini and said it was excellent, particularly the crisp olives which accompanied it. They also had many reasonably priced options and a wide variety of both beer and wine. My mother had a glass of Prosecco, and my friend wanted one last Sam Summer since it was on draft and almost out of season. Drinks are elevated when the glassware is exceptional, so I would be remiss not to mention the gorgeous glassware our drinks came in. With our drinks, we were served fresh, warm bread with honey butter. Our empty bread basket showed our appreciation. The new menu at the Coast Guard House has something for everyone – from a $10 hamburger to a $29 lobster dinner and everything in between. The star appetizer we sampled was Tempura Shrimp ($10). The shrimp were perfectly cooked in an impossibly light, crispy batter, seasoned with a soy-ginger and garlic sauce and finished with scallions, sesame seeds and peanuts. The portion was large but didn’t last long at our table. We also sampled the Lump Crab Cakes ($13), which were filled with large chunks of

I cannot think of a more iconic restaurant than Narragansett’s Coast Guard House. Perched on a rocky ledge overlooking Narragansett Bay, the granite building has become a symbol of Rhode Island dining. For generations, customers have flocked to this restaurant for special occasions, functions and drinks on the famous rooftop deck. Built in late 1883, the building was created as a station for the United States Life Saving Service, which later became known as the Coast Guard. The building was designed by famous architects McKim, Mead & White who also designed Rhode Island’s State House, the Boston Public Library and New York City’s Pennsylvania Station. In the 1940s, the Coast Guard House restaurant was established offering seasonal meals of locally harvested seafood. Finally in 1979, it was transformed into a year round dining destination. In October 2012, Rhode Islanders collectively watched the news in horror as the Coast Guard House sustained massive damage during Superstorm Sandy. The storm broke through all the restaurant’s windows and punched a hole through the building by pushing one of the kitchen’s walk-in coolers

crabmeat without much breading, but they had plenty of peppers and celery. The crab cakes were served with a cilantro/chili relish which gave them life. The Lamb Scottadito ($12) was comprised of four well-seasoned lollipop lamb chops. They were served over a chickpea cake and finished with a delightful arugula pesto. For a salad course, we ordered the Three Beet Salad ($9) and found it fresh and tasty, especially enjoying the fig balsamic dressing. Feeling like a splurge, I wanted to order lobster, and our waiter recommended the Lazy Lobster ($29) with garlic butter. The lobster was fresh and scrumptious, and the garlic butter made it all that more decadent. It was served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. My friend chose Lobster Ravioli ($25) after seeing it was house made. She really liked it, especially the cream sauce which accompanied it, saying it was better than the typical pink vodka sauce. My mom ordered the North Atlantic Salmon ($22) and loved it, saying the varying corn side dishes (succotash and corn custard) were full of “late summer flavor.” My father tried the daily Pasta Special ($29). The fresh saffron infused mafaldi pasta was

amazing, and it was topped with Puttanesca sauce and a mélange of seafood (lobster, shrimp and scallops). Our waiter was excellent and attentive. He discreetly noticed we were celebrating my friend’s birthday and had a candle in our dessert. She chose Tres Leches cake, and the light sponge cake was served on top of the three milks (condensed, evaporated and heavy cream) which was a nice change of pace from the traditional cake usually already soaked in the milks. The cake was served with tropical fruits (pineapple and papaya). It was nice and light, and we ate every bite. The Coast Guard House is back and better than ever. There are some restaurants who can’t rebuild after a disaster (Providence’s La Moia for one), but the Coast Guard House used Superstorm Sandy’s damage as an opportunity to improve. It’s definitely worth a visit to check it out.

Daniel Sheehan grew up in Connecticut and went to school at Roger Williams University to pursue a degree in architecture, but ultimately decided to try his hands at baking. After working for various bakeries, he set out on his own and created the Humble Pie Company. We talked about flaky pastries, funky fillings and pie-based dinosaur names. Do you have any special memories of pie from your childhood? My grandmother used to make a lot of pies. I didn’t really eat her pie until I was older and started to enjoy it. I have one of my grandmother’s pie pans. It’s an old aluminum pan that’s completely unadorned, but what it does have are marks from where countless pies have been cut. The marks are just radiating out from the center of the pan. What was your grandmother’s pie of choice? Apple was really her pie. I slice my apples the same way my grandmother did: really, really thin. It’s totally textural. It’s somewhere between soft and hard. I want the apples to just be barely holding themselves together when the pie comes out of the oven. They should be ready to break down but still have a little firmness or crunch to them.

When did you start selling your creations? I started selling at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market last year. If I was going to start a pie business, I wanted to experience a holiday at a small scale. So starting with the Pawtucket Farmers Market on November 2, I had a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving to see if this idea would be a viable business. I capped it at 100 pies. I only wanted to do 50 pies, but people kept wanting to order. Tell me a bit about the kind of pies you offer. They change with the season. For the fall we’re going to be bringing back the pies we had last year: roasted pumpkin, parsnip, maple pecan and Dutch apple. A parsnip pie? It’s actually sweet. It’s a parsnip custard that’s flavored with cardamom and honey.

Do you make different crusts? I do a few different crusts. Each pie has its own crust that works with it. And my goal, when I hopefully find the time, is to expand the crust line to include a gluten-free and vegan crust. If a certain pie flavor lends itself to being gluten-free, I’ll make it gluten-free. We did a Linzor torte last Christmas that was gluten-free because it has a nut-based crust with raspberry jam inside. And that makes sense because it is traditionally made without wheat products. Our traditional crust is really flaky. That’s what you’ll see most of the time. We make a pate sucre crust too. It’s like a shortbread cookie crust that’s really nice with a lemon tart and chocolate tart over the winter. Are there any new recipes you’re working on? Well, Italian plums will be coming out soon and I’ll be making them with an almond cream base. Plum and almond is a not-so-secret combination of flavors but I really love it. Many people haven’t had plums cooked or in a baked good. So, I’m excited to gauge people’s reaction to that. What are some of your favorite pies? I probably ate the most out of the chocolate tart that we had last winter. The chocolate tart uses chocolate from Omanhene Cocoa Company in Ghana. It’s a company that was founded by Steven Wallace, a Brown graduate. And it’s really good chocolate, that’s the best part about it. They do a 48% milk chocolate and an 80% dark chocolate – both of which go into the chocolate tart. And
that’s with a pate sucre crust. It’s a very simple custard, nothing fancy about the top. Just dark and smooth and surprisingly light tasting.

How much pastry do you prepare and sell each week? We are selling 40-50 whole pies and 500 mini pies – it’s a bunch of pie. We sell at farmers markets predominantly. Are there some pies you only bake in a mini? There was a ricotta herb pie that I did in the spring that was savory. That really did lend itself to a mini – it would be a lot of cheese for one pie. Are you able to source locally? I try to source as local as I can. There are things like flour and butter that are very hard to source locally. All the fillings of our pies we source locally. The blueberries are from Shartner Farms, the peaches are from Dame Orchards, our apples are coming from Steere Orchard in Greenville. We also work with Sunset Orchards and Hill Orchards. Our dairy products, milk and cream, come from Wright’s Dairy Farm.

On Saturday, October 4, beer lovers can attend one of the festival’s tasting sessions which feature over 200 varieties of beer. A general admission ticket is $25 and includes unlimited samples of beer, live entertainment and a souvenir festival pilsner glass. Session 1 goes from 1-4pm and Session 2 is 7-10pm. A VIP “fanatic” hour is offered during the first session for an additional $15, and that gets you in the doors at noon. and Blake, Two Roads Brewing and Old Burnside Brewing. On Sunday, October 5, Goose Island Beer and Absolut Vodka are sponsoring a Brewbrunch being held in the Uncas Ballroom from 11am-2pm. The brunch includes a variety of both food and cocktail choices, and every dish will be infused with Goose Island Beer. The cost is $60 per person and includes all beverages and food. Mohegan Sun is also offering a hotel package starting at $599, which includes overnight accommodations on Saturday, two tickets to Session 1 of the tasting on Saturday and two Brewbrunch tickets for Sunday. Southern Rhode Island is filled with all sorts of hidden treasures; beaches with free parking, walking trails with breathtaking views, back roads to avoid the beach traffic and there are also some culinary gems. West Kingston’s Proclamation Ale Company is one such place. Tucked deep inside a large warehouse behind Arnold Lumber, Dave Witham is quietly and expertly brewing some of the best beer the state has to offer. Dave is a local boy who grew up on the Ministerial Road, not far from where his brewery now sits. Before living the dream as a brewer, he was a music teacher at More Than Music in North Kingstown, and he was also trying to build a career as a musician (he plays bass). In 2008, he received a home brew kit as a wedding gift, and as he learned more about brewing, his passion for it grew. Burnt out as a musician and deciding to start a family, Dave reasoned his income as a music teacher wouldn’t do much more than cover his daughter’s daycare bills. While running a brewing business, his hours would be flexible, and he could pursue his new passion. Between May of 2013 and February 2014, he started planning his business. Finding the space, purchasing equipment and filling out all of the government required paperwork was a full-time job. In February, Proclamation Ale Company opened its doors for business. Proclamation is still in its infancy, but its signature Tendril IPA has already developed quite a following. It’s not as bold or bitter as some IPAs, and it’s brewed with a great citrusy, light, balanced flavor. Even people who usually don’t enjoy IPA might want to try this one. Tendril is a perfect beer for football Sundays and pairs well with salty snacks. In addition to Tendril, Dave has been experimenting with other varieties including a barrel aged imperial stout called Zzzlumber and Keraterra, a light, tart ale brewed with citra and amarillo hops. Currently, Proclamation’s beers can be found on tap at local establishments Mews Tavern and the Carriage Inn. You can also find them in other areas of Rhode Island such as Doherty’s Ale House, Rogue Island and What Cheer Tavern. It is also available by the growler from the brewery. Tendril is always

local charities such as the Greenwich Odeum, for example. The Open Studios lineup varies from year to year but invariably features stalwarts like Gebhart, painters Marjorie Ball and Nancy Gaucher-Thomas, and calligrapher Jane Parillo Rollins, all co-founders of the event. “I teach, as do many of the other artists, so I’ll pull out my pens and paper and let people do some experimenting,” says Parillo, whose Scribe studio is located on Main Street in East Greenwich. “I’m always looking for ways to perpetuate what has become sort of a lost art form, so this is an opportunity to keep calligraphy alive and demonstrate what it means to do this by hand.” Other participants include printmakers, sculptors, potters, photographers, tapestry makers and mixed-media artists. Newcomers for 2014 include North Kingstown’s Mark Knapp, who makes fine bowls, cups and vases from segmented wood; and his partner, Donato Beauchaine, a painter who works in oil and watercolors and focuses on stilllife and landscapes. Each will invite the public into their studios – Donato’s is in the house on Prospect Street, Mark’s in the garage. “I just want to spread the word about woodturning,” which involves assembling hundreds of small pieces of different colored and species of wood before finishing on a lathe, says Mark. “This is very solitary work, and typically I’ll complete a project and it just ends up on a shelf. Seeing the end product,
you can have a hard time visualizing how it all comes together. So I plan to put some things on the lathe and demonstrate how I do it.” Hard work? Yes, but the artist’s studio is where the magic happens, too. So come into our local artists’s spaces on Open Studios weekend, and perhaps you’ll bring some of their art back to yours, as well.

The work of artists can often seem shrouded in mystery. Even when a painter, sculptor or photographer has a studio that’s open to the public, their work often takes place away from prying eyes. Not only is quiet and focus essential to the creative process, but artists tend to be solitary creatures. The annual West Bay Open Studios Tour pulls back the veil surrounding the creative process each fall, when about 20 artists in North Kingstown, East Greenwich, Exeter and Warwick open their studios and homes to the public as part of a two-day tour that includes art demonstrations and discussions. Now in its sixth year, the free event boasts bright gold signs to guide art lovers from location to location. Studios are spread out from Conimicut to Saunderstown, making it difficult to hit them all in one day, so people typically do a few on each day or even visit some artists one year and others the next. Fused-glass artist Alice Benvie Gebhart has been involved in the tour since it’s inception, and typically gets about 100 visitors to her Post Road studio over the course of the weekend. “Bringing the public into the artist’s studio is a way of showing how much work goes into creating a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork,” she says. Most of the artists lay out food and drinks for guests; some even have musicians playing. It’s also an opportunity to give back to the community: several participants donate a portion of the proceeds from Open Studios sales to

My Fair Lady comes to Ocean State Theatre Company My Fair Lady is one of the most beloved, well-known musicals of all time. Even if you’ve never seen it, you’re already familiar with it. I realized I was as I watched the 1964 movie adaptation for the first time. The tale of a professor trying to groom a street vending flower girl into a sophisticated lady has been called “the perfect musical” by critics. Many songs from our musical lexicon come from the soundtrack, such as “The Rain in Spain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.” Now you can see and hear it live in Warwick, as the Ocean State Theatre Company is producing an adaptation of My Fair Lady through October 19. Interpreting such a well-loved musical performed by legendary actors would be a challenge for anyone. There’s magic in the characters interactions, such as Professor Higgins describing Eliza Doolittle as “She’s so deliciously low! So horribly dirty!” to her face, Eliza’s Cockney-accented responses of “Wah!” (to which typing cannot do justice) and “You oughta be stuffed with nails, you ought!” and the comedic-dramatic friction between them as the lessons transpire. There are high expectations, and Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner is up to meeting them. “So many people have a very specific and favorable feeling about this show,” she says. “People love it. And they should! It is my job to meet those expectations in a fresh way.” Though the musical is set in Edwardian London, which encompasses 1901-1910, the sharp, witty dialog and plot connect well with modern audiences. “It will stay true to the time period, but this production will not be a ‘slave’ to those confines – we will use it as a visual springboard,” Amiee says. “It really is a timeless piece as to its messages and themes.” The timelessness of the musical’s themes is among its greatest strengths. Professor Higgins takes Eliza in on a bet, determined to turn her into a proper lady, all the way from selling flowers in the gutter to hobnobbing with kings and queens, and princes and princesses. The plot touches on issues such as class distinctions, the gulf between the haves and the have nots (or at least the have lesses),

and the differences between people. Though aristocratic tendencies were more prevalent among the well-to-do in early 20th century London, the lines of class division is a relevant subject today, everywhere. It’s all about people and perception. It’s Amiee’s hope to convey the musical’s messages to the audience: “First, not to judge a book by its cover. Second, the cover does matter! And third, that when you place a judgement on someone without allowing yourself to understand that person, you are the one who suffers the loss of learning something new.” As I said, even if you’ve never seen My Fair Lady, you’re already familiar with it. Its inspiration, Pygmalion, was parodied by The Three Stooges in their Hoi Polloi episode. If any guy had reservations about seeing a musical, they’ve just been obliterated. The Simpsons parodied it in the episode My Fair Laddy. The Muppets have performed various songs from the soundtrack on several times. Even Family Guy has referenced the play on more than one occasion. Not only did Stewie sing “I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face” in Running Mates, but Once if by Clam, Two if By Sea featured him attempting to turn a character named, of course, Eliza, into a proper lady. Furthermore, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane credits Harrison’s performance of Professor Higgins as the inspiration for Stewie’s voice. See? Told you were familiar with it. My Fair Lady was adapted from the 1912 George Bernard Shaw play (and 1938 movie) Pygmalion in 1956. It was
an instant hit on Broadway and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Rex Harrison won the Best Performance for Leading Actor award for his portrayal of the insult-slinging linguistic Professor Henry Higgins. Julie Andrews was nominated for her interpretation of the urchin-esque, wouldbe lady Eliza Doolittle. She was subsequently replaced by Audrey Hepburn for the 1964 film adaptation, which itself won eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture). Of course, the best way to experience a musical is live, watching actors and actresses perform without a net against a backdrop of elaborately detailed set pieces. “My Fair Lady is lush and glorious and so grounded in theatre history,” says Amiee. “Between George Bernard Shaw’s original Pygmalion to Lerner & Loewe’s brilliant adaption to Warner Brothers’ spectacular film adaptation, it is exactly the kind of first class musical theatre we feel speaks to both theatre and musical theatre fans.” My Fair Lady is a classic with timeless themes that apply to the modern day. The music and the characters will stay with you long after the show is over. If you’re looking for a night out, you’d be hard pressed to go wrong seeing “the perfect musical.”
